Fun little game, on the one side i realy like the "never ending map" idea, on the other hand it makes it realy hard in this 3D angle to control the boat over the border. I like the "fish for meaning" by getting bottels.

liammasters 2021-04-25 23:29

the art style and physics are really fun. It can be hard to figure out where exactly you're pointing. The reduced mobility at higher speeds is a nice challenge.

tim77 2021-04-26 01:11

I don't know if you intended it but the mechanic whereby you plan out where to go in "wraparound" space is quite cool. I didn't realise I could use it at first but thought it was neat when I noticed it. You could tweak the physics to make the sub more responsive - it would add a lot to the game play I think! Well done.

ranchoman 2021-04-26 07:08

Yeah would definitely lean into the wraparound mechanic. Cool idea!

phthalogold 2021-04-26 07:09

Decently challenging with solid progression. Depth-perception was hard at times, but overall nice concept and fun.

genpaku 2021-04-26 07:24

"Terrible Music" is cool for me :D game is pretty fun, at first i had some problems with that perspective and i wasn't sure where the fishes are.

para-no 2021-04-26 08:32

Love the visuals and gameplay simplicity. Music isn't that terrible!:) I was confused by that border teleporting at first but once I got used to it, it turned out to be pretty cool game mechanic.

verygenuinecraze 2021-04-26 08:57

Fun game ! I like the concept of contained infinity !

sir-syko 2021-04-26 12:31

Very cool game! I particularly liked the fan speed changing with the speed, the lights on the fishes and the global light decreasing as you passed levels. Awesome! It was a bit hard to get when you hit a border and sometimes if you were going to hit a fish or just pass by right next to it :stuck_out_tongue:

steve-johnstone 2021-04-26 13:26

The wraparound is my solution to the issue of what to do once the player has left the game space. I tried bouncing the player back, but it felt a bit harsher and more confined. Thanks for all the kind words everyone!

@sir-syko yeah, it's a bit tricky when a fish is just on the edge. I'm not sure what a good solution to that may have been though

sir-syko 2021-04-26 13:31

Maybe lighting the borders when you are close to them could be enough  I think bouncing back would be way harsher and feel clunkier. You solution is fine imo it would be just be a matter of tweaking some feedback :stuck_out_tongue:

steve-johnstone 2021-04-26 13:33

If only I had more time!

jedemac 2021-04-26 14:41

I like the questions at the end of each level, it gives an incentive to keep playing. Which is great for a quick game like this. It's also a clever way to poke at the theme.

I played to the end and it was enjoyable :)

edit : Oh and I just realised the name of the game, yeah very clever indeed, I like it^^

maximbegunov 2021-04-26 14:43

Was a bit hard at first to maneuver at tight space but when I started using warping to other sides I got used to it very fast. Nice game, sometimes though you can spawn just in the center of shark pack with no way of dodging them. Nice little details like light on the fish.

joonamo 2021-04-26 19:44

What a cute little submarine adventure! :fish: Good job making a fun, complete game for the compo! I didn't find the music terrible, I've certainly heard worse. Having bad music is better than having no music at all! Thanks also for making a web build!

sacredbacon 2021-04-26 22:58

The models look great, I liked how it got darker each level; both showing progression and increasing the challenge of navigating the shark infested depths. 'Terrible music' is part of what makes these games so great IMO. Only issue is I would have like to be able to pause, but dying wasn't of too great a consequence so it worked out. Thanks for the game.

bridgeonastick 2021-04-27 12:56

The models are very nice, the 'Terrible music' is not all that terrible and the questions almost gave me an existential crisis! Some visual feedback on getting hit would be nice, and the level is a bit too boxy. Nice first entry for a jam!

steve-johnstone 2021-04-27 14:00

Thanks for the kind words about the music :grinning:

I wish I had added a lot more juice to the game in general. I started trying to add some particle systems in, before realising that my level of knowledge wasn't quite enough to have something done within the time limit. That's an area I'd love to improve on the next time I take part in one of these, along with the sound design, and level design. There's a lot to fit into 48 hours!

generalsturgeon 2021-04-27 17:28

Love the sub and shark models. Spawned right in front of the sharks a few times which was a bit unfair:P. Would like the controls to be a bit more snappy as well. Nice job for a first Compo!

jason-wilson 2021-04-27 17:29

The models and animation were great and the music wasn't that terrible. :) I found myself getting hit by the same shark multiple times, so maybe a longer invincibility period would make that a little less frequent. I liked the double interpretation of the "deeper" with the submarine going deeper while reading deep questions.

Overall, great game. Great work for 48 hours!

soyeahimjames 2021-04-27 17:37

The models are really nice, I love the design of the sub! The movement overall is good, perhaps could be a little snappier but no major issues with it. The biggest problem is the camera angle, a different view I think would make all the difference. Nice job overall, congrats on your first compo!

quite-good 2021-04-27 17:40

Neat game! I appreciated the sleek, simple design and mechanics. The submarine did feel a little clunky to control, I wish you didn't have to slow down to be able to turn it. I think it would be cool if you could turn freely when you have momentum like in the original Lunar Lander. The messages in bottles were a nice touch. Great work!

devemil 2021-04-27 17:44

Now this is an interesting take on the theme. I mean, I don't really see why a submarine would collect fish... But the questions you find was an interesting thing that made me chuckle. Models are cute and you "terrible music" is also not that bad. Small trick: if you feel like it is not good, make it quiet enough and it will just add to the ambience but not annoy. One thing: the perspective is kind of strange. I don't really see if I'm really headed for a fish or if I'm diving past it. Interesting game though :)

threaded-lama-digital 2021-04-27 19:32

Two deepers in one, I like it. Kinda reminds me of a Sokpop game, and I do like me a Sokpop game. It's a bit weird to control and sometimes you get absolutely wrecked by hitting a shark at a bad angle, but not bad. I'm pretty sure that music was designed as some kinda government sound weapon though. I jest, it was okay.

dirkinz 2021-04-27 20:05

Fun little game! I did have one little issue where a bottle spawned in one of the corners which was off the screen so I got stuck for a little while. The models and visuals in general were superb. Great Job

steve-johnstone 2021-04-27 21:54

@dirkinz ah, whoops. I should have added a check to make sure that didn't happen :grimacing:

ezgoodnight 2021-04-28 01:39

I really do love this little game. I think you should playtest it for mobile and maybe make a few little quality of life improvements. But it's a sweet little game and for a first time game jam, I'm damn impressed. It's really nice, and I'm glad I got to play it.

andykswong 2021-04-28 02:33

Great graphics. Nice and simple mechanics. Love the progression in difficulty. It's a bit difficult to aim, especially for the bottle. I would make the hitbox larger for the bottle.

eximir 2021-04-28 15:49

Cool idea ! but the game feels pretty bad to play because of a lack of invincibility frame when getting hit by a shark, this makes it so that you can get damaged multiple time bu the same shark. plus the fact that you can just lose half of your life when a level start just because you appear in a shark. Another thing is that the game lack in diversity.

random-thoughts 2021-04-28 16:05

Took me a while to get used to the controls, but they become quite satisfying near the end. Sometimes I spawn right next to a shark too and it becomes impossible to avoid it. Otherwise, an interesting take on the theme, good job!

didigameboy 2021-04-28 16:11

lovely lowpoly and good game mood

oadt 2021-04-28 18:28

I really liked the mix of the deep diving and deep thought theme. Its a bit weird but somehow works for me. I actually would have loved to be able to copy some of the questions to think about them more later. The perspective you chose feels novel and different from almost all other submarine games (including mine going with the standard viewing angle ) The perspective made the game even more hard though because its hard to see where objects are exactly. Of course there are some minor quirks but overall I really enjoyed this game!

sigill 2021-04-28 18:37

This was actually pretty fun! Even the "terrible music" wasn't as terrible as I expected. One thing though, in the last level I kept spawning into 2 or 3 sharks, which damaged me before I got the chance to dodge anything. For me the corners to the sides of the screen were cut off, making them invisible for me. This caused me to think a fish was missing, but it was just hiding in there. That said, the progression in difficulty felt pretty good and it kept the game interesting throughout the different levels, and the art also felt appealing! Congratulations on your LD48 entry!

steve-johnstone 2021-04-28 19:46

I should have added some more checks for where to spawn the creatures so there weren't any collisions. I thought this might be an issue but I didn't prioritise putting a fix in for it because I felt that the game was completable despite occasionally getting hit to begin with, but I guess it feels unfair and that takes away some of the fun.

@eximir good point about the invincibility. I think that may have been my lack of understanding of how the Unity collision on enter fired, as I assumed that it wouldn't trigger twice, but it seems like it does in some situations.

asdehielo 2021-04-28 20:19

Simple and relaxing, I liked how not only the submarine was going deeper, but also the questions. I turned on the music and I didn't think it was terrible, but it didn't fit the game at all.

A small suggestion, I think it would improve with a faster rotation speed.

Good job!

andrewdavidj 2021-04-29 01:04

Nice work! A unique take on the theme made into a relaxing and thoughtful experience :) Cute graphics too!

tankou 2021-04-29 11:51

Fun game. A pretty good compo work, I think. I like how the submarine feels ''heavy'' in water and that it has a bigger rotation angle. This comes good with the combination of leaving the water at one side and entering on the other side again. I really liked that. The music was simple, but handmade and groovy. Good job!

timo-gass 2021-05-06 15:47

Cool game. I like it a lot. The overall feel is quite nice. What got me the most problems was spawning in an enemy in the next level. That was somehow frustrating. I think another nice addition would be to "cut" the objects on the sides and have two halfs of the object on eacht side of the water. That could help to see where you'll end up after moving through.

Anyways, well done, keep up the good work!

frogmen 2021-05-17 12:17

this was really cute and the movement is nice. i like the meditative atmosphere that comes with the messages in bottles. i think it'd be perfect with some polishing, like more music and sound, as well as stuff like not spawning with acceleration and spawning far away from sharks. great game!
