This is such a cool riff on the Meatboy style platformer. Crossing it with a puzzle game really made me think through my moves! Love the look and approach to the sound design! Great job!

samarthmp5002 2021-04-27 07:04

Wow, very nice game, I love the watercolour art style and the gameplay is cool, maybe work on the jumps a bit, they feel clunky.

le-slo 2021-04-27 09:30

Super cute art (although some of the hazards like the lava didn't read correctly). Level design is good, although sometimes there were some spikes placed unfortunately, combined with the mostly unforgiving collision masks, made me a little frustrated at times. Music was a good fit, and neat that you pulled of a level selection menu and the extra challenge bonus objects. Probably the weakest point is in the movement of the player, it feels a bit floaty and not very smooth, apart from that, very fun!

bellatrion 2021-04-27 10:05

Nice game ! Graphics and sounds make a nice atmosphere. I found the last level a bit frustrating, when you must jump to the top with the platform moving right in your path. Apart from this, I really enjoyed the levels, and collecting the bonus items was a nice added challenge :)

mrpouletbzh 2021-04-27 10:07

@le-slo @dagostino-audio @samarthmp5002 Thanks a lot for the feedback :D ! I know about the player's movements that can sometimes be floaty (especially the jumps), I'll probably try to rework it sooner or later to make it feel less "lunar" and making it fit better with the player character

mrpouletbzh 2021-04-27 10:11

@bellatrion thanks, I'm glad that you liked it :D The last level is meant to be a bit frustrating but once you get how to pass through the last part the level becomes really ok (I think x) )

brokenmatcha 2021-04-27 12:37

I love the art of this game! It's a very good work! The level design is cool too :) Congrats!

redsorel 2021-04-27 13:13

I finished it and i'm happy with my experience. It was fun, really fun. The controls are greats, the controls too. The difficulty was fair.

canvasdev 2021-04-27 18:22

Congrats! Is really good, i can play this all day, good level design, art, mechanics! i love <3

tubular 2021-04-27 18:41

Great idea for a platforming puzzle game. Collision is a little unforgiving which makes the floaty controls a little tough to use but the level of thought and polish put into the design was refreshing.

raiponz 2021-04-27 19:01

Nice platformer inspired by Meat Boy and Celeste. Levels are fun and well-designed. It's a bit disappointing when you fail a jump, run out of power-up and have to kill yourself to restart the whole level.

jlmast 2021-04-27 21:15

It's all great, but seriously very cool graphics! Loved it!

fran-gambero 2021-04-27 21:47

I had a great time playing your game! The art and character design is pretty cool, and the level design is well constructed, very challenging indeed. Actually, I had a similar idea to a platformer like this a few months ago, I'm very happy you developed such an interesting game and have given me some new ideas!

heine-hohenhart 2021-04-27 22:58

Very good idea to limit the jump and dash of the player, a really good platformer who reminds me super meat boy a little ! a really good job, i want more levels !

szymon-ogd 2021-04-28 03:48

Great idea, looks promising for your future. Keep up like this!

locustjin 2021-04-28 06:25

Very cute graphics and sweet character. This is a very good idea and execution of platformer game.

eugenik 2021-04-28 11:52

This was really atmospheric and well put together

solweak 2021-04-28 12:06

Superb entry, it's really complete with a lot of levels, even the progressive difficulty is well designed. I feel like playing a super meat boy fan game and i loved it. The visuals and sounds are so appropriate and well done. Love those kind of platformer when skill is mixed with quick timed reflexion. Thanks for your game !

mrpouletbzh 2021-04-28 12:15

@solweak @eugenik @locustjin @szymon-ogd @heine-hohenhart @fran-gambero @jlmast @raiponz @tubular @redsorel @canvasdev @brokenmatcha Thanks a lot for the feedback you gave us, it really means a lot to me :D

I'll try to work back on the game later, to give an enhanced version of it while taking in consideration all the feedback I'll have so far

itooh 2021-04-28 18:17

Really neat visuals and audio! :o Congratulation. The platform part can be quite tricky sometimes, with the floaty character and unforgiving collisions, but the puzzle aspect makes the game pretty interesting! I also appreciate the presence of bonus challenge, and the facte that the game is generous with the power-up it provides. It makes the difficulty well balanced globally (though the last level was realy laborious to finish). Nice work!

shin0nome 2021-04-28 20:03

Gaphics and audio are great ! The dash/ jump with moving platform is a good mechanic. Like the fact that puzzle are challenging but when you do finish one it's really cool and fun ! Good job !

exofrenon 2021-04-29 00:12

A great little platformer you made there, and a very strong LD entry. I was a little mad with the game in the begfgining because I played through a couple of levels by only using the jump button before I noticed you could dash. . After that the game really clicked. Very neat mechanic to have a limited amount of jumps and dashes and picking them up to se them.

Nice art direction, the main character was kinda cute and reminded me of super meat boy. The sounds / music were moody. The levels were nicely designed and offered the right amount of challenge, and you also had 10 of them which is a suprising amount of content for an LD jam. The whole package was quite polished, without any bugs and very functional UI, which is rare to see in this jam.

My only gripe is with the controls, which were a little bit stiff and could use some work. There are a lot of small tricks you can apply to make it feel better. I would suggest you to read this blog post on Gamasutra on how to make a satisfying platforming controller: https://www.gamasutra.com/blogs/YoannPignole/20131010/202080/The_hobbyist_coder_1_2D_platformer_controller.php

Great job overall.

john-harper 2021-04-29 00:17

Nice twist using the limited number of jump or dash per level. The art style was fun. One suggestion: would be handy to have a reset button when you make a mistake in the level and know you aren't going to make it to the end. Just killing off the character works just as well, but I kept thinking I'd like to just hit R or something to reset the level and try again. Great work!

solah 2021-04-29 13:13

Really good game with a very clever level design, good job!

sharkmax218 2021-04-29 18:00

Good platformer! Nice atmosphere. Main hero is funny =) Why he have 3 legs?

monninen 2021-04-29 18:19

Gameplay is very juicy, and combining platformer into a puzzle game is well done. Art is gorgeous and juicy. Please, continue working on this and make a complete platformer game that you could launch in Steam or in other game store.

steelax 2021-04-29 18:21

great platformer but damn hard!! really enjoyed this.

kassymov-iran 2021-04-30 05:09

Amazing game with great potential! Try to add some camera shakes to make even bigger impact!

fiakaiera 2021-04-30 06:30

Everyone points out the similarities of Celeste and Super Meat Boy at this point, but this game feels more like Celeste than the latter.

This game definitely has some potential and definitely can thrive if done well. * You have to make sure your collisions and objects are obvious to the player, no matter what. * This reflects in situations where you hug a wall and suddenly died even though the spikes are way farther than where they were. * That said, the visual needs to be a lot more obvious, especially in the last few levels where the lava and spikes do blend in the background. * Improve your collision code. * I managed to take advantage of this by being stuck on a wall, avoiding to use a jump. * Almost all of the stages are fine in terms of stage design, except the last one. * You know: how to annoy and repeat the stage because that one platform keeps blocking you and actually make a player rage quit despite having fast respawn times. Which is more of an annoying move AFTER doing all the hustle to get to that point again, wasting even more seconds of your time. **It's actually unfair stage design.** You don't want that if you want people to finish your game. * Keep at with this room-by-room stage design if you want to make a full game at it. This is what you want for this kind of game. * It's not a surprise at this point that the movement is floaty. * As a contention to what others said: It could be a thing that you could go for. Since precision is definitely part of the stage design, having more gravity could be less forgiving for dashes that are situated between spikes. * Coyote time is a godsend if you do push this further. * I'm not a Unity guy, but of course I should remind you to not skip [the article that exofrenon linked](https://www.gamasutra.com/blogs/YoannPignole/20131010/202080/The_hobbyist_coder_1_2D_platformer_controller.php)!

Though the idea is very sound and the stage design does support it, the execution of the mechanics could definitely be better and I sure hope you do a bit more research with collisions and all of that. Good work, all of you!

mrpouletbzh 2021-04-30 06:46

@itooh @john-harper @solah @sharkmax218 @steelax @kassymov-iran Thanks a lot for the feedback, I'm so glad that you liked to play our games, it's really motivating!

mrpouletbzh 2021-04-30 06:52

@fiakaiera @exofrenon These kind of feedback is pure gold to me, I'm still a beginner in game developpement and this will help me improve a lot. I'll make sure to read the Gamasutra article, and try to improve the maniability of our little monster. I'll also rework the last stage to see how to make it less frustrating and unforgiving, as well as the collisions with some platforms, there is indeed some that can be abuse

Thanks again a lot for your feedback! <3

tanguy-tanguy 2021-04-30 10:25

@sharkmax218 it's a secret... No I think he have 3 legs because insects have 6 and it's a side view of the character, and also it was easier to animate since his legs are just sticks without any knees I used the centered leg to give a sense a direction in the walk cycle for exemple

amaroq 2021-04-30 11:37

Very nice game! Whatever game the controls were inspired by, well done because they are pretty perfect :) Only downside is about the locked resolution of game, with my screen cutting of the edges of the game I couldn't see the sides of the level 7 and the jump was to hard to perform of screen.

mrpouletbzh 2021-04-30 11:54

@amaroq I was just thinking about putting a windowed version of the game on itch, so I will do that as soon as I can! Hopefully before tomorow!

juliestrator 2021-04-30 14:56

Loved playing it! Game looks really stylish and plays really well! I enjoyed that it was difficult but never got frustrating! Great job on polishing the level design so well especially in such a limited amount of time! GG!

fluffygamedev 2021-04-30 16:37

Just wow! Great job making this game! The graphics are awesome, the music sets the mood, and the platforming feels great!!!

pattedecanaard 2021-05-01 11:47

The graphics and musics are very impressive, all levels looks different and i like the changement of mood the deeper we go.

I had some trouble with the controls, but it still pretty good for the time of the jam. Make good feeling platformer is more difficult and time consuming than it seems (here is a thread that i like: https://twitter.com/MattThorson/status/1238338574220546049?s=20 ).

I think the difficulty progression is good, even if the last level is harder, I was able to finish the game :)

I enjoyed a lot, very good job !

ithebredor 2021-05-01 14:58

Nice grapics and sounds. Would be nice to fix collisions for the traps. Still had good time, nice job!

mahalis 2021-05-01 15:03

Wow! This is really challenging and a lot of fun. I’m so used to navigating platformers without planning or thinking about it too much, so having to conserve jumps/dashes was hard. I made it farther than I expected, honestly—finally gave up on the level with five dashes in a row because I just couldn’t get the timing right. The visuals are beautiful and well-animated, and the sound effects are unique; I found I didn’t mind dying over and over again much because the start-of-level sound is just so satisfying. Great work!

whismirk 2021-05-01 15:36

mrpouletbzh 2021-05-01 16:19

@amaroq There should be a windowed version in case you would like to try the game in decent conditions! :)

@juliestrator @gamedev-and-architecture @ithebredor @mahalis Thanks a lot for your feedback, glad that you liked the game :D

@pattedecanaard thanks for the feedback, I will definitely take a close look to this thread, especially coming from the maker of the game which was one of the bigger insperation for us!

@whismirk Merci beaucoup pour le retour, ça fait super plaisir de voir que le taff fournit par l'équipe plait :D

srrinio 2021-05-01 16:45

The graphics is really well done, also the level puzzles was really challenging, the only thing that i don't like, was the shift key to use dash (could be Q or E, is near from WASD keys) and the sound effects volume is very high and doesn't fit too well.

xotraz 2021-05-01 22:22

It looks like Celeste and was pretty fun. I did not find solution fur level 6 but completed the rest.

lintfordpickle 2021-05-02 12:27

A really nice game which just the right amount of challenging. I would have liked to remap the keys a little (I kep messing up trying to use the dash button) - but that is a minor nitpick. The graphics and sound were also nicely done.

kripakov 2021-05-02 13:21

Veeeeery nice game, very atmospheric, very solid. Art and music complement each other. Maybe a little bit unresponsive control, but the game looks like a finished product. Still, of course, there are not enough collision effects - particles, camera shake, screen glow, in general, some kind of visual feedback. I also like the level design, which is a good challenge. Good job!

shubart 2021-05-02 22:03

well, i am locked on what looks like a level selection screen. I see the Level Title reacting when the mouse is over, but not by clicking on in. No input, nor keyboard, nor gamepad seems to have any effect

korfi 2021-05-02 22:52

Fantastic game! I really liked it, the graphics gave me a super meat boy - esque feel and the only thing missing was the blood splatter and the recording of all of my runs at the end of a level! I managed to get all bonuses but one (from level 8) and I honestly have no idea how to get it, haha.

Controls were great, the jump felt a tiny bit floaty at first but you got used to it. I really liked the idea of having a set amount of jumps/dashes and thus seeing it as a limited resource. I also really liked how the level changed when you used dashes and jumps.

Graphics were fantastic, I really liked the feeling that it created in the game. It worked wonderful with the precision platforming. It was almost always very clear what was dangerous, what you can jump on etc. The only time I felt a tiny bit cheated was on the last level next to the bonus where the spikes were a tiny bit hard to see.

Great job! :D

mrpouletbzh 2021-05-03 07:34

@shubart which version did you use? I'll try to find what caused this

In case it was the pc windowed version, it appears that the UnityCrashHandler64 was missing, so maybe the build wasn't working correctly for all computers (it worked on mine, but maybe that wasn't the case for all), I reuploaded a version of it on Itch which contains it.

mrpouletbzh 2021-05-03 07:40

@xotraz @kripakov @korfi @lintfordpickle @srrinio Thanks a lot for the feedback!

@korfi the bonus from level 8 is the hardest to get, but they are all possible to collect I swear x) And also yes, some spikes deserve to be more highlighted, definitely

@srrinio @lintfordpickle Thanks for the feedback about the controls, I'll try to see what I can do about allowing the player to rebind keys. I think the game really need controller support too

verygenuinecraze 2021-05-05 09:46

Superbe Jeu. La logique de limitation des contrôles est très bonne et elle force le joueur à réfléchir à deux fois. Le jeu n'est pas trop dur et permet au joueur d'apprendre rapidement les touches. Beau travail

Wonderful game. The mechanics of limiting the controls is very good and force the player to think twice. The game is not too hard and permits to learn the controls pretty quickly. Good Job

acronaut 2021-05-07 04:14

Thank goodness for level select screen.. I like the hand-painted graphics, good music.. The experience for controls It seems more easier of the following: Movement - ARROW Keys, and Dash - Shift, If one were to WSAD and Shift (one-hand assumingly) somehow it's not so responsive as I have expected.. I checked both fullscreen and windowed and noticed that some levels based on the same-screen appear cut-off on on the edges of the screen (very hard to dodge; eg. Level 05); Do a Agree that after more than 30 consecutive rapid fails like a morbid-assembly line type of rhythm I would need to advance forward by selecting another level..

Suggestions: 1. Controls: For Dash, Why-not double-tap of direction (like Unreal-tournament); Double-left/right to dash.. (optional)

2. Somehow have some animated lines of movement to help the visual-key of the Flea Dashing or reacting on rapid-movement..

3. Level of Persistence: I thought one way to help with the relentless repeat of consecutive futile-fails is that if the flea is mulled by the chainsaw blade, it would cumulatively remain or somehow it may eventually create influence of subtle changes to the hazards (lethal sharpness of blade dull/rusted, or enough mess 'softens' the lethal elements to eventually advance.. (but for those implied 'challenges' (one would reset as its usual-state..); Or somehow there's RNG of variation of the trickiness of the Hazards.. (subtle) 4. If not 100% same-screen, then have some contextual camera to dolly/pan/zoom [if there will be a more large-scale map on later build].. 5. Rebind keys may help..

Challenging Platformer!

mrpouletbzh 2021-05-07 14:18

@verygenuinecraze Merci beaucoup pour le retour, contant que ça ait plu! :D

@acronaut Thanks a lot for this massive feedback, it will help a lot. I agree that rebind keys is something that I need to implement in the game (honestly I just don't know yet how to do that on Unity, but it will be my priority when we will work on the game post jam), and I must admit that the double tap could be something really nice to implement! Also we plan to add a controller support, which is also something that the game cruelly miss. We will also work to give the flea more visual effects around it, some particles, and a real animation for the first part of the jump. Thanks again for the ideas, I definitely take notes of them :D

pat-cleaver 2021-05-11 14:11

Great game! Really enjoyed the different platforms move when you use different abilities, very smart mechanic. It did feel a little bit floaty and therefor punishing to me at times, but all in all, I'm very impressed with the game. Congrats!

noobdude 2021-05-16 12:26

I loved everything from the game , the ideea of it having to think about your jumps and stuff, the last level with the jumping puzzle i dont think i did it the intended way, i somehow managed to dash at the start of the level when you drop down to the level to save an extra jump and with triple jump i managed to finish the game! really fun to play

mrpouletbzh 2021-05-20 10:54
