It was a really fun game, although I'm not sure if it has a win state, or even a point system? Also, I figured out that the lightning went were the lines indicated up top, but conveying that more thoroughly to the player might be a better idea.

Nice!

A bit confusing, but I like how it looks, and once i got used to player movement, I enjoyed the controls as well. Was never able to successfully cross a body of water.

falk-bruskeland 2017-07-31 13:04

Cool game! Like the mechanic

dimesto52 2017-07-31 13:30

you cant avoid if the notice is in the end of the bar

edmond00 2017-07-31 16:27

Thanks everybody for your comments !

@dimesto52 The notice go to the end of the bar only when your food counter go to 0. So the goal of the game is to avoid this !

@stormforce02 There is no win state currently, just an infinite (but repetitive) randomly generated world to explore.

Great graphics, innovative controls and gameplay. But lack of incentives/goals spoils the fun.

player2point0 2017-07-31 18:20

Fun game. I enjoyed the gameplay and thought that the lighting and rain sound really added to the feel.

badly-drawn-rod 2017-07-31 19:15

The strangely beautiful graphics really enhanced the mood. I also like how your avatar slows down when they're swimming, and the lightning effects are great.

amastryukov 2017-07-31 21:05

The graphics are really well done. The gameplay is simple, but the delay in movement is not very good. It seems the game is lacking incentive - why do I need food? How the lightning strikes worked was a bit of a mystery. There were red bars, but only the last one indicated where it would strike. The lack of background music was overshadowed by the rain sound, which worked well to set the mood. The game is missing a goal/incentive, which made it a bit boring after a minute.

Well done Edmond!

What I liked:

Graphics- The art looks awesome in general, especially for a game jam. The fact that you made so many assets like the animals and all the trees are really cool too. Adding the effect of the trees getting struck by lightning and turning black was a really nice touch too. The Idea- I do think the idea is pretty interesting. It really makes you think about the movement and the timings of the strikes.

What I didn't like: Polish- I understand that it is a game jam, but the movement and overall gameplay didn't feel right. I wish the movement was smoother so there wasn't a delay when switching direction. I also wish you added an indicator in the scene like a highlight for where the lightning will strike, instead of just the red line up top. There were also times when the red line would be at the very end, so it was impossible to avoid it (I just saw above that you said it's if you run too low on food, so disregard lol).

I think if you refined the gameplay a bit more, it would turn into an even better game!

winniehell 2017-08-01 21:22

Interesting concept / realization of the theme! :-)

Controls didn't feel smooth and at first it wasn't quite clear what to do.

gonutz 2017-08-01 21:25

I have no Java installed and I don't want to install it. Please consider using a deploy-friendly technology for your next game. Something that builds to a single Windows executable is ideal for a game jam, or a zipped folder with the executable.

The character was moving slowly but it was a good game after playing for a few minutes.

boundtotheearth 2017-08-02 12:50

Movement was kinda irritating but I got used to it and the game was pretty fun. I like how the player's "attacks" are essentially out of control to the player, but are predictable enough to be used effectively. Seems like an interesting concept that I would like to see developed further

edmond00 2017-08-02 14:58

Thanks for yours comments ! I did not notice the delay in movement until I read the comments even if it was obvious. I fixed it.

@amastryukov Thanks you for you comment. You are right about the lack of incentive, I should add a goal or a scoring system. About the red marks, they all indicate a lightning that will strike to the position of the avatar when the yellow bar pass the red mark. So if there are 3 marks, 3 lightnings will strike.

@hungare Thank you for your long comment, I appreciate it !

krp 2017-08-02 18:02

The movement delay was really screwing me up. I think the concept was really interesting but I feel like you should have had some sorta overarching goal... I really like the graphics. I think with just a little bit more work the graphics would be astonishing!

simonhutchinson 2017-08-02 21:17

Very cool! Great idea. I love the random level generation. In my best run, I ended up kind of bouncing back and forth one one island for a little while, avoiding water.

junjunlowpoly 2017-08-03 05:13

This game has very innovative mechanisms. I see some problems in executing though: firstly, immediate gameover after being hit by a thunderbolt seems to be a too harsh punishment. Secondly, if you pick up things that increases the counter after the counter reaches zero, you still gets hit by the inevitable thunderbolt. Thirdly, it looks like in this game players just try to survive as long as possible. In this case, it would be a better motivation to have a scoring system so that the players know how good they are doing, and whether they are beating their own records.

The graphics and sound effects are good!

raymoclaus 2017-08-03 06:57

I think the core gameplay has been really fleshed out which is great. I think the indicator for where the lightning strike should be much clearer but other than that, the only thing left to do is to incorporate this core gameplay into a larger scheme to keep players going for longer periods of time.

belowparallel-ian 2017-08-06 15:07

A really unique concept. The game is fun, but it could really do with some end-objective. I think the lightning mechanic could make for some neat puzzles and/or boss fights if you decide to move forward with this concept.

elizabeth-thomas 2017-08-06 17:18

was hard to get used to the mechanism of where the hit are for the lightening strikes but it was unique and the bunnies were cute. lightening and trees looked good. sound for lightening was good.

designernap 2017-08-06 20:46

Took a few turns to work out the red lines were timing indicators of strikes and then LOVED it! :D great little concept here.

erkberg 2017-08-07 17:51

Pretty awesome and creative core mechanic! The indirectness of it all is great and really makes you aim in advance. Plus you have to remember where the lightnings will strike. A very neat idea indeed. The visuals and audio are also quite good. The only thing this is missing to greatness is something like a long term goal. Overall though, I enjoyed this quite a bit, good job!

guckstift 2017-08-07 20:48

Interesting game concept, the lightnings are teasing. I needed some time to find out how to extend my life but that was the pleasure. Would be cool in addition if your work would be playable on the web :)

dariusa 2017-08-08 21:31

Good mechanic, hard to get used to. I see a great potential for a larger game, maybe a puzzle game as suggested in the other comments !

simone 2017-08-11 14:22

nice mechanic, now the game need a scope :) Also, as other said, it would be nice a web player

urbanhelsing 2017-08-13 14:03

I am probably very stupid but... how do I start your game?

dragojt 2017-08-13 14:13

Weird game, difficult to control the lightning hehe. A part from that is so original and innovative, good job :)

edmond00 2017-08-13 16:47

Thanks everybody for yours comments !

@urbanhelsing If you have java installed, you have to unzip the archive download on itch.io (with 7-zip for example) and open the file 'launch.jar' in the repository called 'HungrySky'. As java is portable, it should work on any system, but as I only tested with my computer, there might be some problems depending on os or java version. Sorry if it is complicated, I will try to make a web player or a more friendly executable next time.

isolea 2017-08-13 23:20

Very interesting concept. I would've liked to see a ground marker where the lighting would strike, but maybe that would make it too easy. Nice job!

abductedplatypus 2017-08-14 16:45

Wow, a very original concept. Pretty cool as well. The game looks and plays decent. I would have loved some music though. The controls were a bit floaty at times. But overall it is a very great entry.

zzq 2017-08-15 13:30

Nice idea and it's fun to play for a while but the game lacks some goals, scores or any other motivation for player.

hadrien 2017-08-19 15:32

This is a cool idea, well executed, but you need to add more features in order to give more challenges to the player. Great job :)
