Beautiful game! (Played on it in Linux via Wine and it ran great) Loved the vibe of it and the artwork and music. A few confusing things: Took me a while to figure out I needed to harvest crops manually and what was happening with the food upkeep.

Also, didn't use walls at all, nor see the need to. I don't think it really needed the combat stuff.

mr-field 2017-05-01 15:14

@impbox

Originally we had ground-based combat planned, using the barracks to create your own little footsoldiers, but we didn't have time to get it in there before the jam ended, which I guess made the combat, as a whole, feel pretty lackluster.

I'm very glad you had fun with it, though!

snobox-studio 2017-05-01 17:26

Great game and great work! I didn't run into any combat that would necessitate having defensive structures, but other than that I really liked this game overall :)

stupidpawn 2017-05-01 20:36

I enjoyed this game. The graphics are really nice. But I didn't understand this game when I first played it. I didn't know what all building did. Tool tips would have been really nice. Something like when you hover over the mine "mine: mines stone". Doesn't have to be a big description but it makes the game allot more clear for the player. Furthermore, when the pirates came, I didn't know pirates would come, I got totally destroyed. I hadn't prepared any defenses. I think the biggest fault of this game is the communication. That said, after I got everything down I really enjoyed this game! Well done!

mr-field 2017-05-01 20:46

@stupidpawn

It says above the build menu 'Hold shift for info', doing this tells you what each building does and how they work.

The game could definitely use some form of 'How to play' or tutorial, though. Especially with how the pirates just show up.

I'm glad you enjoyed our game, though! And I appreciate the feedback.

brotherst 2017-05-01 20:54

Amazing game! Loved everything about it. It was a nice challenge to work out which resources to prioritise. Inevitably there comes a point where You no longer feel the need to carry on, but with a few more game mechanics/higher tier buildings in there it would be really tempting so see how big you can get.

maggardjosh 2017-05-01 20:56

This is gorgeous, love the isometric graphics. Once I figured out what everything did this was really fun. Nice game!

veralos 2017-05-02 03:44

Really nice game! It takes a bit too understand how everything works, but once you it's quite fun.

I'm pretty terrible at games like this, though. My only means of wood production got taken out by one of the enemies without me realising so I didn't have enough wood to build new defenses when more enemies came. I didn't have enough workers to make more wood and I didn't have enough wood to get more workers. I tried harvesting trees to get more but it all fell apart pretty quickly.

Anyway... The graphics look great and music sounds quite nice. Overall, it's a really well made game.

unoion 2017-05-02 14:53

It's really beautiful and well-designed game! Well done!

la-mecanique-du-plastique 2017-05-02 15:11

Woah, this is pretty impressive. The graphics are great, the music is great, the gameplay is great. Loved the evolving level space. We can felt that you didn't include everything you planned or been able to balance it fully, but this is a totally enjoyable in its current state. And damn, you even made a pretty ending. Bravo !

wtoa 2017-05-02 15:51

I did it!!

Little+Lands_2017-05-03_01-49-45.png

This game was absolutely fantastic! The level of polish that this game has is very impressive for something that was done in 72 hours. You guys should definitely publish this game to the app store. My favorite game this jam so far!

owc 2017-05-02 16:25

It's hard to believe you've done it for a couple days. It was a compliment :)

Art is really nice, gameplay has a certain depth and game looks really polished. Great job!

rongo-matane 2017-05-02 18:14

Great game! The graphics are really good, inviting me to play it in the first place. The music is pleasent and the sounds fitting. It gets clear really fast what is happening and what needs to be done. Though i didn't notice at first that my buildings kind of crumble after a while. The storage was a great add on - since it was "work" to harvest before, it really felt like a nice thing to have.

The game really took off when the attacks started, then it really got some sense of urgency and kind of a mission. I didn't need the tower upgrade. The apple trees seem a bit imabalanced - all hinges on workers, apple trees don't need them so they are much better than fields. I did have more than enough space, so it was fine. But the ships taking my land really moved me to action!

The finish screen(s) was very satisfying, leaving the impression of a well rounded game. Awesome that you did in over the weekend, this is the game i enjoyed most so far :) On all aspects, great game!

PS: an indication about an incoming ship would be great, so i have a little time to prepare. I nearly didn't notice an attack that was out of camera.

cmlsc 2017-05-02 18:41

I won with 169 people. :P

The art and music were both great! It wasn't that hard to figure out and it was a lot of fun to play.

I feel like there should be some other threat that comes along later, because once you get enough towers, the pirates aren't a problem. Also, when the screen fades to black at the end, you can still see resources coming in.

I liked how the mines left holes in the ground after a while and the lumber mills(or whatever they're called) disappeared after a while.

Overall, it was a great game!

jakob-willforss 2017-05-02 18:52

This was awesome! Best one this far. Played it two times, first getting the hang of it, and then completing it. I was very positively surprised by the satisfying ending. Not many have time to make such nice story, fiery boat animations and even an ultra-happy song.

For constructive criticism I would say that even though the game mechanics overall was very satisfying, it sometimes felt a bit slow waiting to get together enough resources (in particular the drained food), and also interaction when ships started attacking was a bit all-or-nothing. If I didn't have resources, a huge chunk of the island was eaten away. Second time I tried when I was a bit prepared - Then, piece of cake.

Nevertheless, my favorite this far. Would love to see what you do with it if you develop it further. Which you should!

brotherst 2017-05-03 12:37

Ah I see, I didn't realise there was an end game, so I stopped playing at around 100 population. Will return to complete it at some point.

ruthiepee 2017-05-03 18:43

Had to take a break from work to play this game, I saw the thumbnail on a Tumblr post and need to play it IMMEDIATELY. I love city building games and this is an outstanding take on the genre, especially for a jam. Honestly it's worth playing it just for the adorable ending and the awesome music at the end, haha. It's really cool how the world morphs and shifts shape after pirates attack it. I thought the interface was really intuitive too. One of the best games I've played so far. :)

2017-05-03 19:35

Of all the games I've seen until now, yours is the best. It is really cute and well done/planned. The only problem is that the Walls aren't useful at all. I think you found gold here, this could easily be a great idle game where you plan your progress at the moment you arrive in the new planet with it's [new] resources and your [new] [and bigger] buildings, like in Egg Inc etc. I think it could be a great mobile game. Good luck!

##### First thoughts Bloody hell, is this actually an LD entry? It's impossible to reach such level of polished gameplay in 72 hours, ~~it's over nine thousand~~!

Found your game on itch.io in the similar tags to our game. Was not easy to find your ldjam page (please add link to this page in itch.io description) to throw all stars at your ratings.

Now about gameplay. It's crazy cool. Everything has so much sense. It's like I played in my old, favorite game. But it was a new experience at the exact same moment. Super cool.

##### Art Whoever of you guys drew them pixel - give that man a medal. Sprites are so clear and classy. I am 100% jealous.

##### Audio Groovy bass and some light melody - everything you need for a city builder. Music right in harmony with gameplay. And every player interaction with the world is also sounding very fitting.

##### Overall Your "Little Lands" is just amazing. Played it myself, recommend to friends.

Great job, Robin and Billy!

smeax 2017-05-04 19:44

Wow! What a great game. The music, the gameplay, and the freakin beautiful pixel art. Thats very impressive for 72 hours. Best game i've played so far! Well done

(YAY!)

mr-field 2017-05-04 20:30

@smeax

214 people! That's what I like to see.

You've beaten me. Billy's highscore is 1111, but he's way too talented at these types of games.

I'm really glad you enjoyed the game so much! You put way more time into the game than you had to, to get that many people, I really appreciate that. :)

tylerraz 2017-05-04 21:11

Really solid entry, I can see this placing high. The only improvement I could really thing of would to make a more pronounced effect when the tree's die, whether a sound effect or an aura (like around the resources, probably a different color).

samusoidal 2017-05-05 00:08

Very cool game! I wasn't able to load my ship, but I had a lot of fun playing. Good job!

listonos 2017-05-05 01:31

I saw this on one of the "best lists so far" and I must say I wasn't disappointed. Very cute graphics, fits the theme pretty well, city builder  The sounds effects very a little annoying after a while would be my only criticism. Oh and I won with 85 people.

dgspitzer 2017-05-05 05:57

All 5 stars! It's an amazing experience! Thanks to you, 79 people boarded a ship.

avavt 2017-05-07 15:09

Wonderful game!

I love how every single interaction with this work has a nice feedback, and I love how this little world *feel* so small, floating through magical space.

This is the best best entry I've played so far. Great work!

invader 2017-05-08 11:49

Such a polished piece of art! Amazing style, great gameplay.

hbocao 2017-05-10 00:52

Holy smoke! This is amazing, guys! Incredible work. This is the best I played so far. I really can't say much about it. It's just perfect. Congratulations!

Do you plan to expand this? Because I want to come back after the ratings and play it.

elzach 2017-05-10 18:47

Super Small World Dude WOAH! Great ingame title. x)

I very much enjoyed this entry. Very coherent and beautiful in it's art assets and sounds. Especially the difficulty curve is a strong suit. It starts kinda challenging, when you've got to learn the mechanics with limited ressources and later reintroduces the challenge, when you learn that your established ressourcegatherings are on limited time and when you finally (in my case) get comfortable with the games pace and produce every ressource in abundance the game ends and heeds you into a new world.

Very well done. The only thing the game is lacking is an option for fullscreen.

drestuff 2017-05-12 11:28

This was a just a really coherent and polished entry overall! You managed to make a complete feeling game for this Ludum Dare and I really enjoyed playing it too. I thought the slight grind felt totally worth it once I got that sweet ending. Really great job! :ok_hand::sparkles:

paulhocker 2017-05-13 03:43

simply amazing game for ld - extremely polished and well designed - awesome job

2017-05-13 04:31

This little game was great ! I'd absolutely love to see it continue to be developed, I would pay for a bigger version ! OR I would totally love to contribute and make art or music for it if you would ever consider outside help ! :)

joror 2017-05-13 20:42

Wow, nicely done! Great graphics and quite a very nice learning curve! I got a bit stuck tho when mines/woodchoppers ran out and I didn't have enough resources to build new ones.

automatonvx 2017-05-13 22:12

Perfect, kept me going till the end. Excellent artwork, Excellent music, Excellent design. Was grateful for the automatic resource collector because otherwise harvesting was getting a bit of a chore. Outstanding

dylanilvento 2017-05-15 09:51

I thought this game was really awesome. I played it with a group at my local game dev meetup.

spinaljack 2017-05-15 13:16

I came here from RPS, game is so cool :)

pascalman 2017-05-18 14:29

I not have Windows but game looks great! Good job!

kaisean-games 2017-05-18 16:27

This one is the best I've played this LD. Very well executed. Very similar to something I tried a few LDs ago, but I failed to complete it (let alone balance it).

The only issue I had (and I don't know if that's intentional) is that after a while my quarries and woodcutters stopped working (I guess resource depletion), however I didn't receive the workers back. Was that intentional?

juicybrucey 2017-05-18 21:17

Thanks, it means a lot! :)

Hmm, the workers not returning shouldn't be an issue- as Robin actually made sure that was fixed. And afterwards you are the only one to say they don't, which would just lead me to believe perhaps you built something without realising it? there's no notification of the quarries and woodcutters running out, (which they do) and that's something we plan on fixing. So unless your game had a bad day I really would only expect it to be that you were building things that require workers without realising you had gotten the 2 from the resources back.

joshykc 2017-05-23 10:41

Fantastic game. Really great concept of the world coming into place and enemies destroying precious tiles.
