LD40 — The more you have, the worse it is

Shall they up? by LeReveur 2017-12-26T15:48:51Z

I like the idea but I am not sure about having to ask every time if you want a new weapon, I felt it broke a bit the pace of the game. If the game needs to advance, then so be it. Also, the controls would sometimes conflict with the controls of the browser itself, even on Firefox. Eventually, after the third enemy the game quickly turned into bullet hell, with those purple enemies that shoot directly at you, it became difficult for me to keep track.

Orbits by tuism 2017-12-27T13:32:33Z

Nice game, it reminded me of school homework about Kepler orbits  The main drawback, for me, is the motion of the centre planet, I felt it was slow and dragging, even with mouse sensitivity at maximum. I guess this is for precision, but when a new planet comes right to you I thought the slowness made it difficult to avoid. All in all, it's a cute and challenging game. Edit: silly me, I only set the mouse sensitivity on my system settings, I didn't see the in-game mouse sensitivity option when it was right here before my eyes! Adjusting it in-game made the controls much better.

LD40 - Snake by Torhaq 2017-12-26T13:25:31Z

An interesting take on the classic snake game, but as others said, the controls are a bit awkward. When the snake gains acceleration, it feels like it's on an ice surface. I am not sure of the purpose of the "boost" command since the snake is already fast enough. Also, for some reason the game felt a bit slow on my laptop, even though the graphics didn't look too demanding for a graphic card.

A Platformer for Ants by Elendow 2017-12-26T15:24:18Z

I really liked the original concept, even though I am not sure how it fits with the theme. The game was enjoyable and I thought the retro graphics were cool. The jumps would sometimes be a bit frustrating, like the character slipping off the border of a platform, but in the end I could make it through. Also, the game sometimes had "hiccups" (on the Web version) but it might be from my laptop.

All in all I say good job, it's a fun game and I'm looking forward a more polished project based on that gameplay idea

Maurim: Unepic thief by bakudas 2017-12-27T15:00:40Z

Nice game! The mechanics remind me a bit of my own game actually  but yours feels more polished. The retro graphics are good and there is a nice atmosphere. Only thing I'd suggest is to have a better idea of what amount is needed to make the door open.

Attack of the Killer Zombie Veggies from Outer Space by abcdef65g 2017-12-28T19:37:13Z

Reminds me a bit of Plants vs. Zombies (except this time it's plants you are fighting  ) As others said I was a bit confused about the different guns available, with only a change in color. I guess when you run out of ammo you simply pick up a new gun? And when you have a lot of guns it's difficult to remember which ones have ammo, but maybe that's the point of the theme. Also, I wasn't sure whether the randomly playing "X-Files" jingle had any meaning. The game quickly got challenging as more enemies appeared on the screen while I was running out of ammo.

Reaper Boy LD40 Edition by jessefreeman 2017-12-27T14:25:39Z

Interesting mechanics - even though I'm not sure how they fit with the theme. I really liked how you captured the feeling of early Game Boy games: the color, the sprites, the gameplay, the presentation. Only thing that I'd suggest is to make the music less repetitive. All in all it's a cute little retro game  Note: it's probably not intentional but the character reminded me a lot of a French comic book named "La Petite Mort" by Davy Mourier

Mushroom Délicieux by TRASEVOL_DOG 2017-12-26T12:16:18Z

I really liked the art style and how you managed to make clear indicators of what is a power-up and what is an enemy so we can keep up on what's going on despite the fast pace. For the mushrooms it was a bit less obvious. Also, I did not see the purpose of "epileptic" effects, other than hindering visibility.

I have managed to reach level 8 out of 7? Though by then I quickly died because it became really too hard. I would say, after level 5 it becomes very difficult to understand what's going on on the screen but I guess this is going in accordance with the theme.

In short, it's a hectic arcade game with a pleasing retro style, and quite an interesting challenge.

Coastal Postal by dom 2017-12-09T11:55:55Z

Nice little "travelling salesman" game! I like the simple, relaxing retro graphics. As stated by another commenter, the main drawback is that it's sometimes not very obvious which locations are reachable from a given location, and which ones aren't. Good job, overall!

Babies with Guns by killerkun 2017-12-27T15:08:46Z

Well it's clearly a prototype but I like the idea. With all those babies around it's quite difficult to keep track of what's going on. One thing I did not understand is that it seems I got a "people alive" score of 2000 no matter how many people were killed in the game. Looking forward a game with more content in the future.

Hyper diapers by Gaziter 2017-12-09T23:22:14Z

I found the graphics simple but very cute, and the gameplay quite challenging. Only drawback was that at first, I was not sure what to do - because of the title, I tried changing the baby's diapers. Then I did not notice the blue/red color code and was surprised when I found that the computer was a hazard, while the game thinks it's OK to put a baby in a trash can. Granted, I should have read the instructions before plunging directly into the game, anyway, I thought the game was not really making it clear. Overall it's a fun, well made little game that fits the theme perfectly!

I'll Take You To Tomato Town by adamgryu 2017-12-09T23:53:01Z

Probably the most hilarious entry I've played so far. I loved the graphic style, the game mechanics, the voice acting and ridiculous stuff like the donuts/bagels. Only problem is that I found the wording quite American-centered, as a non-native English speaker, I did not understand all of the voice acting and I was a bit confused by some of the requests : it took me a moment to understand that "pop" meant "soda" and that "Tomat-O's" were cereals, or maybe that was on purpose. Anyway, awesome job!

Furtive Fortune by Jake White 2017-12-26T13:07:18Z

Great concept, in accordance with the theme! However, it practice, it was quite difficult. Like @naca, on my first run I got a lot of coins but it felt impossible to go undetected, so on my second run I went away with 9 coins. Also, I found it weird that you keep your total number of coins (and therefore the noise you make) at every level, it makes everything more difficult.

I appreciate how enemies cannot see through walls, it makes sense, but I think it should be more obvious graphically, especially for a stealth game.

Overall, it's a short but challenging stealth game with a twist.

Between Stations by Sand-Gardeners 2017-12-27T13:11:04Z

Eh, the game tells me the TV has nothing more to offer and I'm not sure what to do. Maybe I didn't find it, or maybe the game is over and that's the whole point. Anyway, I'm not quite sure what I just played, or how it fits with the theme, but I liked the atmosphere and the peculiar graphics. It's impressive how you put up so much content in a limited amount of time.

Goodnight Sheep by littlecloudflower 2017-12-27T12:28:15Z

Probably one of the most emotional games I have played here. At first I didn't pay too much attention to the story, only to realize the theme is actually quite dark and the gameplay reflects well the state of mind of the main character.

On the downside, I thought this gameplay was rather minimalist and the game was short. Maybe you could have added some challenge like having the "right" thought randomly jumping to another sheep, or sheeps with varying speed and color. But I can consider this is as a "conceptual" game where the most important is to keep the gameplay close to feelings. Also, I liked the mood change given by the music, maybe this could have been reflected on the graphic side too.

Super Trader 64 by WildGamut 2017-12-11T22:53:08Z

I loved the low-poly graphics and the cute animal characters that reminded me of Animal Crossing. The trade system was quite a good idea too, but I experienced a problem. As stated by others before, I ended up with honey, eggs and butter, and I kept trading and trading for ~20min but did not see any new items. Starting a new game gave me the same results, I still don't know how to get yarn or tennis balls, this is the main issue I have with the game. Overall it's a cute and nice retro game!

Super Trader 64 by WildGamut 2017-12-13T18:34:15Z

@wildgamut Indeed, I downloaded it again and the file is different. However there are new problems with this version (Windows version) : - It is no more possible to quit the game by pressing Q in the pause screen, I have to do Alt+F4 - I can't grab pots of jam - quite ironic for a game *jam* :stuck_out_tongue: - either on the pause screen or the trade screen, the paw kinda freezes up if I hover one. On the pause screen I have to un-pause, and in a trade I could not find any way but to wait until the end of the trade. Seems to be a problem with the 3D view in the corner - the pot of jam doesn't show up.

The Big Pink Thing. by Ludrak 2017-12-10T20:13:46Z

There's some good ideas but I have a few remarks. - First, the controls are not very practical. As stated by others, in the first version it was pretty awkward to have one hand on the arrows, another on the space bar and then... what for the mouse? It was corrected in the new version but, if I were to nitpick, I'd say my opinion is that mouse buttons should be used in FPS games or games that use the cursor feature of the mouse. This is not the case with your game, so I'm not sure of the relevance of FPS-like controls here, I think your game controls should be kept on the keyboard or gamepad. - The most frustrating thing was the hitbox physics. Sometimes the enemies would deal a normal amount of damage, but most of the time they would simply kill me in one hit, sometimes even not touching them. I think it might have something to do with broken recoil calculation, instead of bumping, the player stays on the enemy and has its life immediately sucked out - but that's just my theory. Maybe having a short invicibility-flickering time after being hit would help. The platforms were also not easy to jump on, it was not always clear where you could land on them. All of this made the game difficult. - As I played the game it kept filling up my computer memory, which is not even a common thing with Java. You should seriously look up your memory management, maybe you're keeping dead objects in a list somewhere without deleting them, or maybe it's graphic resources that are not freed (with Java it's one of the main memory issues) - I am not sure of the usefulness of the permanent tombstones, which hinder visibility when you die a lot. Or maybe it's for the theme? - I was a little lost at the end, not being sure what to do. Apparently there is no real end.

Anyway I give kudos to you for making a game in 100% Java, personally it's not the language I find easiest to work with when it comes to games. Although I still think you could use a game engine to help you with physics and stuff like game states and controls. I liked the characters so I look forward for a more polished game with that universe.

Yellow Beans by Jecr 2017-12-10T17:03:26Z

I don't really see the point of the game except for that one boss fight. My first complaint is about the counter-intuitive controls, especially in the early Windows version that I played, it seemed very incomplete (text display bug, game randomly crashes when you select "exit"... apparently you have updated the game since) so I was stuck at the first text box because I could not scroll the text and I thought the game was broken. It took me a while to figure out I had to press "up", it's not obvious and it was not explained in that version of the game.

The most frustrating thing, to me, was when you attack the birds, sometimes they hurt you instead. I did not think I would become so scared of little birds. Then the boss fight went on and on, I still had to avoid these birds, it became tiring. I would say the boss fight is too long, but then again it's the entire game, so it would only make the game even shorter.

Lastly, I thought the story did not really make sense, the poor English did not help.

I liked the characters and the retro GameBoy style of the graphics, although the boss sprite might need more polish. All in all I am not sure what to rate this game, it's clearly just a prototype of a single boss fight. I'm still curious about the game universe, I look forward to an actual finished game that comes out of it.

The Weight of Greed by tuzepoito 2017-12-26T12:25:43Z

@nodine Thanks! I had this idea of the challenge of "max number of coins" instead of "get all the coins" but I did not find ideas for it for most levels. I will think more about it when I remake the game, because yes, after the jam is finished there will probably be a remake.

I tried SFXR and its sequel BFXR, but I wasn't satisfied with the coin sound, so I quickly made something with FamiTracker because that's a tool that I know.

@ping78 Nice! You know you can restart a level by pressing R

Bo Jackson in The Temple of Ming by Nodine 2017-12-28T19:57:48Z

I liked the idea which is pretty creative. In practice, I thought it quickly became difficult to balance the vases when you have dozens of enemies chasing you at the same time. So I kept running and running but apparently there is no end, and it became a bit repetitive. Anyway it's an original idea that could use some improvements, like progression in the levels, or a different balance system that is more considering of the enemies.

Clumsy Paws by sovogirl 2017-12-26T15:32:11Z

Probably one of my favorite games here. The graphics are cute, the game is fun and I liked how the music gets more ominous as you play. As others stated, maybe the object hitboxes could be more generous, especially considering the speed of how the objects fall.

The Agenda by Juh Champ 2017-12-10T17:26:03Z

I liked the idea of a game that pretty much compiles every single conspiracy theory out there, provided - I hope so - that you are not a Flat-Earth believer yourself. The interface is simple and the atmosphere is quite ominous, given the theme. However, the main drawback, as others said, is that the gameplay is mostly about clicking everything at the same time and repeat until the game ends.

I thought I would get some backlash if I chose too many weapons, because it's a classic game mechanic, but I did not really feel it was the case here. I was confused by the "Danger" variable because I did not really understand what it was linked to, even though I was able to keep it under control. Once I realized the "Danger" did not really represent any backlash, the game went pretty smoothly, a bit too much maybe.

I also agree with earlier comments about the lack of visual feedback, but I guess this was because of lack of time to implement it.

I think it's an interesting game idea that leaves space for many more gameplay mechanics.

Coffee Run by Canaha 2017-12-09T12:32:55Z

Classic endless runner game. I liked the night shift mode which nicely added difficulty. It would have been good to have more obstacles, like moving obstacles, enemies. I would also say there should be some music, but my own game does not have music so...

ShrunkenThief by Craig Downie 2017-12-10T17:10:21Z

I can't get very far, I can't reach the shelf because every time I jump out of the sink, I fall to the floor and go back to the title screen (where I have no choice but quit because the mouse has disappeared) Is that normal?

Shroom Hunter by drnoir 2017-12-26T15:04:33Z

First, I liked the setting and the oppressing atmosphere of the game. As you have stated yourself, it is not obvious that you need to press E to start the game so I got stuck on that for a while. Then the zombies tried to gang up on me, and it was not very easy to attack them since even when I got close they seemed unaffected. Then I think there was a bug which caused all enemies to stand completely still and not attacking, making the game much easier but it kindof killed the thrill. I tried restarting the game but the same problem happened again. Of course, when I got the bow I didn't see much use for it since the enemies did not attack. I eventually completed the game like this even if sometimes it was a bit difficult to keep track of the mushrooms collected, the mushroom count would randomly appear and disappear. By the way, I am not sure how this fits with the theme of the contest.

I also thought the game was quite slow and the loading took a long time even though there isn't so much content.

All in all it's a strange take on a nicey mushroom hunt in the forest. I think the game needs serious optimization on the game engine side.
