LD31 — Entire Game on One Screen

Center of the Sun by Cyros 2014-12-08T19:20:00

Solid, complete game. It's probably the most fun game I've seen so far. The core ternary game mechanic is really solid, each type of ball being fundamentally different. Managing the incoming balls makes it play a little like Guitar Hero or DDR. I also liked the motion blur and the sound effects.

The one thing I didn't like was the controls. CCW:CW::left:right makes sense when the control ball is on top, but it's inverted when the ball is underneath. I can't think of a better control scheme at the moment (outside of a gamepad thumb stick), but I bet it can be better than this.

Small suggestion: make the collect and shoot colors stand more apart. Pink and purple are pretty close together, visually.

Kill The Snowmen by elektricmaster7 2014-12-08T22:12:00

I like the scaling effect on the snowmen, and the game looks pretty good overall. Other than that, there's not much more to say about this simple game.

Wandstep by celeron55 2014-12-08T22:20:00

Cool puzzle game. I didn't fully understand the rules, but I had enough of an idea to complete a few levels with a poor "score." I'm going to come back to try this again later after I've had some time to think about it.

This could make for a good mobile game.

Defense the Base by Jordan Kniest 2014-12-08T23:00:00

Cool upgrade menu. I thought I was playing something incomplete until I clicked that, but it changed my mind.

I'm not really a fan of left/right rotate controls like this. Some of the other games have the same issue. When the turret is facing down, left/right gets inverted.

Snowman calamity by lightsoda 2014-12-08T22:36:00

I really like the look of the game. Nice style. It's incomplete, though. Where are the powerups and such? Every good defense game needs those!

Untitled #31 by f7f5 2014-12-08T21:14:00

Interesting game idea. I've never seen anything quite like this before.

Galaxia by greysphere 2014-12-08T23:22:00

I'm a sucker for these kinds of games. Nice work!

The Cubenator by Kuupu 2014-12-08T18:19:00

Great graphics and audio! You've got the start of something interesting here. I like that there's an automatic demo with the title screen. Very old school that way.

The shooting part of the gameplay is incomplete. It's very shallow being locked horizontally like that. It's basically whoever has the highest health wins in a direct confrontation.

Screen Ego Aegis by LegacyCrono 2014-12-08T21:23:00

Nice graphics and animation. I think the pushback on hit is a good mechanic.

The hitbox detection on the player character is kind annoying, though. It counts as getting hit even when the sprites are clearly not overlapping, when just some transparent part is overlapping. Overall the game could use a wider variety of enemies and abilities.

Dungeon Tactics by sensenmann666 2014-12-08T21:32:00

I like the concept. It's definitely worth trying. But it hasn't been fully realized here. The game need more tuning and balance because right now it relies a lot on luck.

Litelane by furriKira 2014-12-08T17:35:00

Nice use of sound and music. I'm glad you had some options to make the game easier since those tight turns are pretty difficult by default.

Bullet Beat by ekun 2014-12-08T20:53:00

Wow! Incredible game! It's fun, intense, and catchy.

My one complaint is that it's damn hard!

How Many Screens? by AdenMansonGames 2014-12-08T17:41:00

I'm pretty sure you didn't make that song yourself, especially not within 48 hours, and I doubt you have the legal rights to it. Also, where's the source code? You should take another look at the compo rules.

How Many Screens? by AdenMansonGames 2014-12-08T22:25:00

@raincole The game has a Celine Dion song in it. I didn't mean the simple tone song.

Cold Days Ahead by KrisDevelopment 2014-12-08T21:09:00

Great art, sound, and mood! I like this sort of game, though this one is a bit too simplistic to hold my attention for long.

Putting the "Ok" button overtop the "Sleep" button is pretty annoying. I clicked sleep prematurely by accident a few times because of this. I also suggest making the pointer change when hovering over a button.

True Dark by ranseur 2014-12-08T19:34:00

Interesting game idea. I've never played anything like this before. It's brutally difficult though: one hit and it's game over, with several rapidly moving enemies.

The only way I knew how later stages of the game worked (i.e. moving to other rooms) was from the screenshots. The game itself doesn't make it very clear.

Super Shoot 'em Away 2 by Ramori 2014-12-08T18:11:00

Straightforward and simple, in a good way. I like how the screen shakes for explosions. That adds some punch to them. Your powerup mechanic is neat, that you get one and the enemies get the other.

The music and sound feel kind of muted. I want my gun to sound powerful!

Movement seems incomplete, just rigidly moving along the two axes. My ship doesn't feel like it has any weight/mass to it.

You didn't advertise gamepad support, but I did notice I could shoot with my Xbox controller, though I couldn't move with it. Not a criticism, just noticing.

Start the Screen ! by bobombe 2014-12-08T21:57:00

You've got the beginnings of a cool game here. The movement (jumping, etc.) needs more work to make it feel tighter. I wonder how hard it would be to make procedurally generated levels so that they don't have to be hand-crafted.

Fido, Fiona & Fidel by pjimmy 2014-12-08T19:56:00

Very original and innovative game idea, with a clever and humorous implementation. Though I'm not sure if I would call it fun! In any case, it was an idea definitely worth trying.

It makes me think of playing a tabletop RPG like Dungeons and Dragons, being lost in a labyrinth I can't see, relying on DM clues that may or may not be true. Under the right circumstances that sort of thing can be fun.

This is the part where I'd try to leave some sort of useful feedback on how to improve the game, but, really, there's nothing left to add or take away without fundamentally changing it into a different game. You've basically converged on a local maxima.

Ebola by OneMuppet 2014-12-08T20:18:00

I like the RnD mixing graphics.

Overall I can't really figure out what I'm supposed to be doing. I think RnD is a Mastermind type puzzle, but that's it.

Ocean Crossing by andysolace 2014-12-08T20:36:00

I like the graphics.

I don't know if I'd call this a game any more than I'd call the card "game" War a game. There's no actual decision making going on. The player merely presses one of three keys -- doesn't matter which -- to see the next random event.

Unknown by Bonesdog 2014-12-08T21:41:00

Yup, invalid entry.

Jeff The Pink Penguin by Nielz 2014-12-08T20:40:00

Nice graphics.

Turning is painfully slow, though! I don't think this control scheme works well.

SumoAttack by Blister 2014-12-08T21:36:00

Good, solid game. Nice CRT effect. It just needs sound and a single player (vs. AI) mode!

ColorBlocks by kiiro94 2014-12-08T19:41:00

Wonderful use of audio to create mood. This has the best mood of any game I've seen so far. Relaxing game.

As others have noted, not being able to turn counter-clockwise feels like an odd omission from the controls. It's part of what makes the game feel incomplete.

Border31 by wavertron 2014-12-08T22:30:00

Cool, solid game. You hit on something interesting here. I like the sound becomes more complex has the game becomes more complex.

Santa's Last Stand by GameStudioLive 2014-12-08T18:42:00

Pretty fun once I got the hang of it. I'd be interested in seeing more tower defense elements, more kinds of static defenses and such.

Shooting doesn't have any punch to it. The entire game never really feels like I'm doing anymore more than just clicking on pictures of snowmen.

Note: you left Pompeii in the download, presumably by accident.

Treasure Dungeon by yurodivuie 2014-12-08T20:59:00

Cool game. I thought it was going to be Sokoban at first, judging from the look of my character.

One issue with the controls: when I'm moving vertically, pressing left or right moves me horizontally. If I'm moving horizontally, pressing up and down doesn't do anything. Makes the controls a little frustrating.

The monster sounds remind me of Doom!

Colored Ninjas by BtheDestroyer 2014-12-08T20:11:00

Very nice innovation with the big screen thing. I like the gratuitous blood splatters.

The game is incredibly easy, especially with the later weapons. It still needs tuning and balance.

Stasis by prymidion 2014-12-08T22:07:00

Really great interpretation of the theme! It's not a restriction for you, but rather a feature of the overall puzzle.

My main problem with this game concept is that it's ultimately DIAS: "Do It Again Stupid." You can't predict what future levels will have, so you can't plan for them the first time through. You're forced to replay puzzles in order to allow future puzzles to be completed. I don't know if there's any way to escape this issue without fundamentally ditching the core concept, though.

Movement (moving, jumping, etc.) could use some more work because it doesn't feel quite right, but it doesn't really impact the puzzle part of the game much.

Gnome's Dungeon by madmaw 2014-12-08T22:49:00

Great game concept and execution. This would be fun as a mobile game. It's a tricky game, too. I kept making little mistakes, like ascending before was was ready! Excellent work!

V for Vectory: Maximum Overquill Edition by quill18 2014-12-08T19:05:00

Probably the largest, most complete game I've seen yet. I like the wide variety of upgrades available. This feels like a proper tower defense game. Also, nice juice.

I like the "boss" squid things. That's a cool idea. It add a secondary goal (to eliminate them).

I'm not really a fan of this sort of movement scheme: free aim (mouse) but movement locked along two axes (WASD / arrow keys). Very few games can pull it off, and even then only barely. It makes fighting feel tedious, such that I'd rather focus on the larger scale stuff, like placing mines and ice.

DOS Defender by skeeto 2014-12-08T19:28:00

@frondeus Run it in DOSBox just like you would play an old DOS game. While Windows will sort of pretend like it might be able to run it -- because at one time it could still run these old DOS games directly -- it won't work that way on any modern system.

Ludum Dare may not have a contest for writing novels, but that's not stopping you!
