LD22 — Alone

AB-ALONE by SonnyBone 2011-12-19T09:39:00

Ditto - Shame, this one looked interesting.

Afrocity Atrocity by Sos 2011-12-22T11:27:00

Ummm.... what?

A Stitch in Time by ChainedLupine 2011-12-21T04:12:00

Very impressive; It's a shame that the game is so damned hard, but seeing as there is only one level anyway it doesn't matter.
As far as shooters go, there wasn't much out of the ordinary here, but what was here was well polished, charming, and very well done. (fantastic chip tunes btw)
In future, you may want to regulate your movement with a timing multiplier to prevent this speed up. (multiply every movement calculation by a float that is initially set to 1f, that way if this happens you can just set the multiplier to 0.8f or whatever to get the desired result)
Well done; I gave it fairly high marks across the board.

ASSAULT THE DARK FORTRESS by FrankieSmileShow 2011-12-21T07:30:00

RAGE!!!
This game is great, but after about 20 minutes of killin' and collectin' stuff, I walked down 1 screen and it booted me saying "You escaped..."
Aside from that, I really enjoyed this game and it is among the best I've seen so far.
There's something really satisfying about dropping some dynamite down as a cloud of enemies flock around it... BOOM!
Great work, give yourself a cookie.

A.I.one by Toeofdoom 2011-12-20T02:06:00

I really enjoyed this, but it could definitely use some tool tips or instructions to explain what is going on.
Is there somewhere I can keep an eye on to see if you expand this idea? I'd like to see this fleshed out into a salable grade game as I love the concept and really like the control scheme. (once I figured it out)
I had no idea what-so-ever about what was going on in the science menu (if that is what it was), but the combat was fun and could be great if you expanded it to include some tactical maneuver options (Maybe movement options whilst attacking like strafe, charge, lead etc.)and add some additional enemy types to take advantage of them.
Excellent work - good luck in the comp. (I'm surprised to see there's not more comments on this, but maybe people are still wiped out from the comp - Mine is yet to see any action as well, so I wouldn't worry about it too much yet)

Loot Alone by karnakgames 2011-12-19T23:53:00

Well, I really enjoyed this... until it ended :(
I sat at the "Alone with a rocket kitten" screen for at least several seconds waiting for some awesome game-play to kick in where I would ride a rocket cat across the landscape or something...
The graphics were very charming and the comic-book panel style of game-play (if you can call it that) was really interesting.
If this had more 'doing' then this would have been the best LD22 game I'd played so far (well, other than mine, obviously :P); Nice work

solo trader by anthonyl 2011-12-21T03:07:00

I liked the idea of this game, but as soon as the messages hit the bottom of the screen I couldn't see any new offers.
For some reason, the scroll bar not only didn't track the updates, but also refused to allow me to scroll down...

Alone In Space... by Sandcrawler 2012-01-05T08:49:00

After a run of some very very crappy games, this was delightfully refreshing.
It could have used a little more clear instructions at the beginning, but aside from that it was very straight forward and fun. Good work.

Minicraft by Notch 2011-12-19T10:16:00

Cool game, definitely one of the better entries I've seen so far.
I think mine is way better though as it has explosions AND lasers, whereas yours does not. :)
I may be a little too exhausted to play this properly at the moment (I wondered off and lost my damn workbench), so I'll reserve filling in the ratings until I have a chance to give it a proper go.

Mad Trolls by Frugle 2011-12-22T13:42:00

Not bad at all; It would have been nice to have a health bar (unless I didn't notice it...) and some sort of directive as to when to expect certain items to become available would have helped the pacing.
The sharks were a pain in the butt and I suspect that they sapped a good 90% of my health before I was pack raped by a group of three or four trolls.
Kudos for getting ambitious with your entry, and good job getting it done in under 2 days.

Things you do alone... by jeffz 2011-12-23T10:48:00

It's a shame that this is only one level, as I was expecting it to be something of a Warioware style 'monotonous tasks' simulator with a bunch of different mini-games about random stuff, but I guess that time limit is a killer.
The music and sound was well done, but I would have liked some more specific instructions (I had no idea where to find the soap, so maybe if you placed a picture of it beside the instruction then it would help).
It was an interesting idea let down by the lack of additional levels.

Atlantic Flight ONE by Tritax 2011-12-20T03:03:00

Excellent work; I came here from your post mortem and I'm glad I did.
This will be getting saved to my HDD for future playing - I didn't quite make it yet, but I got within 2 Km and thought I should probably go play some other games before I get too caught up in this(3 trys so far), so I wish you luck in the competition and suggest that you consider sprucing up the graphics and slapping this on XBLIG. :)

For Glory! by SLiV 2011-12-20T13:09:00

I was really impressed with this one, I shat my pants when I died after being sneaked up on by an unseen enemy in a dark passage in the fifth or sixth level.
This game is brutal, but a ton of fun; Great work, feel free to pat yourself on the back. :)

Someone Was Here by bushmango 2011-12-20T07:05:00

This is a really cool idea for a game, and I can't help but think that you could have done something really special with it if you gave people something to find that would lead to some form of deeper goal.
You tackled the theme in a very creative way, so 5 stars for innovation :)

Apollo Kepler-22b by David Colson 2011-12-20T03:39:00

Nice work; This game is friggin' brutal, so it really adds to the atmosphere.
Personally I would have gone with a larger terrain and made the oxygen deplete a lot more slowly, but then again I would have probably gone nuts and made it randomly generate the levels and added vehicles etc. and would have most likely missed the deadline :D (If you want to learn how to manipulate the terrain in code, check out the Landscaper class in my game's source http://www.ludumdare.com/compo/ludum-dare-22/?action=preview&uid=7849 - It's largely undocumented, but it will show you how to both manipulate it and how to spawn objects onto it where you want)
I really love the idea of this game and am tempted to try and make something of this type myself.
Also, Unity is bad-ass; I love the fact that you can make a game like this in only 2 days.

Apollo Kepler-22b by David Colson 2011-12-21T01:03:00

I haven't yet finished it, no.
I didn't even know there was a second level... o.o

Alone With Myself in a Box by Aaron 2011-12-22T02:36:00

Great work; High marks across the board.
It gets pretty tough pretty quickly (level 4 was crazy), but it is action RPG progression based gameplay at its purest.
It is a great example of why Ludum Dare is so awesome, filled with enjoyable yet minimalist gameplay, loaded with brilliant industry related humor, and some rockin' tunes.
Definitely one of the better games I've stumbled across so far; Give yourself a cookie.

You wake up alone by nili 2011-12-20T01:29:00

Excellent work; A fleshed out version of this would have had a welcome home on my GameBoy.
It's a shame that you didn't get more time to throw in some more content, but what was there is solid and enjoyable.
All I can say is that for better or for worse, it left me wanting more, which is a good sign. :)

LUDUM DARODIUS by pythong 2011-12-20T13:24:00

Brilliant work; A great way to get my weekly cat killing quota without having to go searching around the streets all night. :)
In case you weren't aware, the damage doesn't seem to affect your life bar, but it didn't seem to make much difference as it was a fairly laid back experience.
The parallax scrolling penises in the background looked great, and all of the sprites had a lot of character.
High marks all round.

Do NOT Hug Me! by ziomorti 2011-12-21T07:02:00

I loved the run animation for this; Sheer brilliance.
The game itself was a little shallow, but you score some points for doing it in HTML5.
I didn't make it to the boss, but I don't that's ever likely to happen due to my total ineptitude at these sorts of games.
Good job and way to go reviewing so many games;I came here due to your 11% coolness rating - That's roughly 100 games already!!!.

Josh The Fan-Tastic by Skoggy 2011-12-20T02:21:00

4 stars across the board from me; Swap out the text that says "Space" for "A", shrink the hitbox for the spikes to about 70% (of the height obviously), and slap this puppy up on XBLIG.
Very nice work for such a short amount of time; The only complaint I have is that it really needs checkpoints if you are going to have leaps of faith as it gets really annoying to have to restart the level all the time after cheap deaths.
Good luck in the comp :)

Lighthouse Keeper by nin 2011-12-22T13:52:00

I couldn't figure out what to do in this game; in one life I saw something that looked like it might be the fuel, but when I touched it nothing happened (and then I was eaten by a pack of wolves... no, seriously, I'm not making it up!)
Good job getting it done in time to submit; It's just a shame that you didn't get time to do some real play-testing on the finished product to fine tune and bug fix.

It's Space by EatThePath 2011-12-19T09:37:00

Nice work, mate; I love Unity for making games like this doable in such a very small window of time.
I sucked pretty bad at this game, so I didn't get very far at all, but I did like look of the enemies.
Was it just me, or did holding back to retreat not work?
Anyway, good luck with the comp. :)

Head South by MurrayL 2011-12-24T02:50:00

Very nice little game; It's a little strange and had a very unique laid back pace that I liked.
I was a little disappointed that it didn't really go anywhere, but to tell the truth I'm not sure that it mattered.

Vestige by Quimby 2011-12-21T01:00:00

Thanks for playing, MagicRat.
I totally agree that my tutorial doesn't do a good enough job explaining the rules and the general lack of direction/polish was primarily due to the fact that I didn't do any work on the tutorial/menus until an hour or so before the deadline. (plus I was exhausted after a 14 hour cram session)
To help remedy this, I have shot a video to upload to Youtube that walks you through the tutorial with commentary so that future reviewers might actually know what to do. :)
Thanks a lot for reviewing and thanks for the feedback.

Vestige by Quimby 2011-12-21T22:05:00

lol Thanks, Aron.
The rolling buttons are mainly for my own benefit as I enjoy rolling the craft into turns to make myself feel cool. :P
Thanks for the feedback; I think the confusing part is the kind of mission I put in - Perhaps a "Kill all the turrets" mode would have been more appropriate for this entry as people don't really have much time for each different game so the simpler the better.
Oh well, that's a lesson learned for next time. :)

Vestige by Quimby 2011-12-24T00:23:00

Thanks, Jeffz; I'll take the TV comment as a compliment. :)
I'm currently in the first stages of fleshing the game out with more modes, better 3D models, bigger playing area, a new height map generator, and proper missions etc.
The menus are going to be completely replaced ASAP as I just quickly slapped it up in the last hour or so before the deadline using Unity's vanilla GUI component which, while functional, is boring and very static.
Thanks for the feedback and the love :)

Vestige by Quimby 2011-12-30T03:28:00

Thanks for playing, Hazard.
I'm not entirely sure by what you mean about the inertia, it does actually have inertia already; You can see this if you are flying away from something at full speed, reduce the thrust to zero, and turn around.
Are you saying that there should be some way to lock your direction while you turn to aim? That might be cool.

Vestige by Quimby 2012-01-04T02:41:00

lol Yes, I often set it to the sand bars landsetting with 50 turrets in order to play a Star Wars-esque battle scenario.
I absolutely agree that even a small selection of sound FX would have made a world of difference in making it more immersive, and although I probably would have had time to cram some in before submitting, my body was far too exhausted to bother.
Thanks for playing :)

Coclution by cirolve 2011-12-20T23:22:00

This was a very cool game once I figured out what was going on (took me a while); Perhaps some more detailed instructions on key prompts would have helped ie. "Press Q to lock the position of the light ball".
The difficulty curve is quite steep, and the total darkness outside of the light ball's point light is probably to blame. You should consider adding a very low intensity directional light from above going straight down; it wouldn't kill the atmosphere if it were low enough and it would make negotiating the maze in the dark slightly less painful.
Also, final point, when you are using a mouse look for a Unity game, you should use Screen.lockcursor=true; to hide and centre the mouse so it doesn't get in the way or inadvertently click a banner whilst playing.
High marks all round for a very creative puzzler.
PS. I did try to respond to your message on my game (Vestige), but it tells me to sign it to comment when I'm already signed in, so I'm not being rude by not answering. Thanks for playing :)

Alone by gytisam 2011-12-21T03:12:00

Same deal as MagicRat - Couldn't get it to run. :(>

Delirium! by V0ID 2011-12-19T23:35:00

Interesting game, though without sort of goal or method of avoiding the enemies once they locked on, it all feels a little pointless...
I really liked the idea though, and it would have been fun if there were some sort of objective/strategy to the gameplay.
The graphics were definitely charming, and reminded me a little of the Spectrum.

The Island by rockenstein 2011-12-19T09:45:00

This could do with some sort of instructions or help guide as I could not not figure out what to do with my fantastic collection of rocks, twigs, and poisonous berries...

.Journey to Polygonia by sythe 2011-12-20T02:13:00

This was fun, the scrolling was silky smooth and the hit detection was spot on.
If only the physics... blah blah blah... because I was enjoying it until I had to rage quit in just the 3rd level...
Still, I gave this fairly high marks as it is very well made and a lot of fun when you get on a streak of not dying every 20 seconds. :)

Nightmares of a Wizard by TeamEpsilon 2011-12-21T06:53:00

Not bad at all; Basically what Magicka would have been had it been coded in a couple of days.
I had a lot of fun, which is kinda important for a game, so good work guys. :D

The Lonesome Pixel by Kaslai 2011-12-20T12:47:00

This was a whole lot of fun, but I rage quit after f*cking up the same damn jump over and over and over again on the first really big level, and the jump come after a whole ton of setting up which is ruined when the avatar pushes one crucial bit of dirt into an nonredeemable position for having missed the jump.
I feel like the jumping wouldn't be quite so bad if it used a non-arrow key button and had slightly more hang time to make your move... Other than that, excellent work - you should be proud.
