LD47 — Stuck in a loop

AudioLoop by Hyohane 2020-10-05T01:50:05Z

@lamasaurus @dharby Strange, I never had such a problem while I was testing. Sadly, my heart wasn't really in it for personal reasons, but now I might want to make a post mortem version. @lamasaurus Thank you for your kind feedback.

LD41 — Combine 2 Incompatible Genres

WITCHSΔVER by Tymus 2018-05-09T16:07:03Z

I usually wouldn't use screensavers, but this is the exception. A great concept and a lot of fun. So for the 'dust me' game you have to clear the eyes and mouth, not the entire room right? I would definitely love to see more like this or more mini games in this.

WITCHSΔVER by Tymus 2018-05-10T10:50:32Z

@Tymus I was able to play the broom part, but failed when I had a face all over the room for the first time. I guess my PC is weird for not having any issues? Congratulations for the 20 votes.

Intel Driver by Pete 2018-04-26T11:09:18Z

Could it be that drifting is permanently on? Pressing k didn't do anything and I was sliding a lot. The game would really profit from some audio and a reset button in case you get stuck. Otherwise the game seems fine.

Paper Defense by Heff 2018-04-30T15:09:29Z

Can somebody tell me how a game is already rated when there is no link?

A Tale of Comedy and Tragedy by jelch 2018-04-24T12:10:42Z

A sweet, short game! The only negative point I could see is that the line breaks can be at the middle of a word (might depend on the resolution).

Sniper-Platformer by thecrancher 2018-04-27T15:51:35Z

Nice idea, although the current version is a bit limited and static. I am impressed to see an escort mission that doesn't completely suck. You don't happen to know the flash game material sniper? Perhaps you can take some inspiration from that. Good luck next time and update us on your progress.

CRAP BALL by falak 2018-04-26T22:04:32Z

So it's supposed to be a tactical sports game, right? Well the only real tip that I can give you is the same as the one I got myself: upload a single executable instead of an installer when the game is that small. On a sidenote, why is one of the symbols a japanese letter/character?

Ludum Dare 41 by zacyzacy 2018-04-27T14:37:31Z

So it's turn based combat and a slot machine huh? It's technically not new (thinking of characters like Setzer and Cait Sith) but I don't think I've seen it replace the entire battle system. Sadly, there is a problem with that, the player doesn't contribute anything to winning. You could integrate some of the old gambling myths to solve that. Like rubbing the coin on the machine before using it. Lastly, the lack of sound and indicators of the damage done is taking away a lot of the experience.

Dimensional Rift Escape by Kpable 2018-05-06T16:01:55Z

An interesting idea, but the enemies shouldn't be able to activate the buttons, it's just annoying.

Text Card Action Game by DragonZlay 2018-04-25T02:37:24Z

Well, if time constraints force you to make a puny game you might as well make it punny, which you did. Too bad things went the way they did. On the plus side, the game has replay value because of the multiple endings.

c Shark by timo nys 2018-04-26T21:43:05Z

I'm really sorry, but I can't rate this game. All I can see is a flapping machine and two static objects and nothing reacts to any buttons I press. I'd still like to hear what the concept of the game is though.

EARTH: AFTERDEATH by KureKureciCZ 2018-04-27T15:22:52Z

The file is over 1 GB but all I can see in the game is me falling off of a space station. Does this still need fixing or am I doing something wrong?

Bullet Pause by Finn Truman 2018-04-28T01:59:55Z

Well, it works so no complaints here. I guess you should mention that you can set more than one navigation point. With a turn based game you kind of expect to only do one action at a time. The idea could really work and with some music and audio it could now already be a decent way to pass time. Perhaps next time you can use the time leading up to the Jam to lear instead of the time during the Jam. Start the week before and every day you think of one thing you want to try.

Randammo!!! Throw Magic Cards At Bad Things by Micahtron 2018-05-01T12:27:09Z

A better pacing so that the player can actually look at what they are doing could help out a lot. Right now it's all a bit too fast to really do anything in a coordinated. The best strategy seems to be spamming W and A repeatedly.

Burgers & Dragons by Vogt 2018-04-26T22:48:04Z

A bit simple and cumbersome, but that matches the life of a food truck salesman. I could see this going in a quirky, humorous direction. Add uncommon ingredients and subsequent effects, which of course result in witch trials because your food is unnaturally good. So you'd have to cook in court in order to prove whether your food is black magic or divine. Just an idea.

O.D.I.N: Out-Dimentional Integrated iNgector by HellSquirrel 2018-04-26T12:04:02Z

An interesting idea, but the side scrolling perspective is a bit pointless, if you can't move up and down. With that implemented and perhaps a level to move through it could be an intriguing game.

Nom Three by qorthos 2018-04-26T09:15:02Z

So you neither have to make the blocks fall into lines of 3 or more, nor do they have to be 3 in a straight line, you just have to eat 3 that are somehow connected? With better graphics and a timer that lets you earn time by eating instead of a move counter this could be a pretty nice game. The audio needs some work, but is ok.

Basketball Tactics by BelowParallel_Ian 2018-05-09T15:44:14Z

I can mostly just say what has been said before. If there was an actual ball you could make a throw miss by x tiles instead of just having a success or failure. The players already have a speed, so that could determine who goes when, once an AI enemy exists. Seems like it could be fun and I hope for the best in its development.

Two Second Detective by darkfieldgames 2018-05-01T15:30:34Z

I can only agree with aemiliu, so why can't I rate audio here? The game is very short but effective and apparently also cthulhuesque?

Little Basement by Firefluid 2018-04-24T12:38:48Z

A short game that has a nice atmosphere. There isn't much to the gameplay yet, but it could be very interesting with some more work (I know how harsh the time limit can be). Are the genres platformer and horror? The player character seems to be improperly layered or are we watching him through a semitransparent wall? It might not be intended, but it could become part of the story. Some of the texts should be positioned more conveniently so that you can read them better. Lastly, in the credits it says twice "This game was made by". Oh, and thanks for the secret.

PurpleBlueRed (PBR) by Luc Magitem 2018-04-26T13:17:33Z

I guess I can see what you were trying to do, but it doesn't seem to work. Sometimes the keys let you through and sometimes they don't and then the same door lets you pass after trying a few times. With a bit more precise controls and a bigger view of the map this could be all right. Add a multiplayer and it would be pretty entertaining.

Dush Dolbush by Dioinecail 2018-05-01T14:13:39Z

A pretty fun game. Sadly, it glitched out on me at one of the later levels and only displayed the loading screen. There isn't any punishment for pressing an invalid direction, which makes the game a bit too easy. The camera should follow the worm instead of the woodpecker so that you can't walk off screen. The dropping blocks were a good idea, but why have they not been on any later levels?

Silent steps by David Brož 2018-04-26T12:27:01Z

It's short but it works. The fact that the audio indicates what side the enemy is at is nice. The window should be square though, because right now you can see more horizontally than vertically without any reason. The player has the advantage of sprinting, so the enemy should also have an advantage that the player has to overcome. Perhaps some walls could be vents that only he can walk through.

Galaxtris by imod 2018-05-09T16:52:29Z

Definitely a well executed combination of incompatible genres. It is a bit inconvenient that you have to go to the upper edge of the screen, where you run into enemies and the placement of the blocks doesn't always perfectly align with where you intend to place them, but it's still great for a game jam game. The instructions could have been more clear, for example, you can only rotate blocks if you have 4 collected or that you don't just have to connect blocks at the green edge, but also have to fly in the opposite direction of the green edge. It looks good, it plays well, so it's a positive rating from me.

HOPS VS THEM SKULLS by selavy 2018-05-01T14:38:49Z

Perhaps you should list the controls in this description as well and that r is for restarting. Did you use a draw GUI event for the healthbar instead or a draw event, because for me the bar is in front of parts of the level. If you make your game run in Fullscreen, make sure it adapts to the user's screen (pixelated pope has some videos about that). You made a functional game so don't get discouraged and stay on it.

Karma Plane Simulator by 2bam 2018-04-27T16:35:05Z

A nice and funny idea, but also a bit monotonous, especially in regards to the sound. Bros and kids are supposed to annoy the passengers, not the player. Could be interesting if it was expanded with things like flight routes and varieties of passengers.

Basic Tower Defense by Adam Draheim 2018-04-26T09:35:05Z

I didn't rate it, because it is unfinished. Just wanted to let you know that it's not displayed correctly on my screen, a part is just cut off. screenshot.png

Tri-Species Area by shaodwing 2018-04-26T12:59:19Z

It seems to work as intended which is good, considering the time constraints. I guess it could still be changed to sort of have an ecology. The humans need plants, the zombies need humans and the plants need zobiecorpses as fertilizer.

FishOnLand by icecubepill 2018-04-30T15:07:22Z

The game is kinda difficult, but sadly for the wrong reasons. There is no air control once you jump, the view is very limited, the enemy moves erratically, physics and collision checks are a bit wonky. I guess it could be made better by not breaking the game up in several levels, but by instead making the water pools refill the water a bit and adding checkpoints in between. Like that the water would be a resource instead of a time limit.

Police escape demo by KaueSilva 2018-04-25T03:16:15Z

Granted, this is listed as a demo, but there really wasn't much to see here. From the listed controlls I can tell that the full game will offer more to do and more variety. Stealth mechanics and interactable objects would probably help a lot. What works quite well is the mixed style of 2d and 3d elements as they don't clash visually.

ALL BUTCHERS by Alexandre Kadri 2018-04-27T16:06:55Z

A charming little game, but what genres were supposed to be combined here? Or did you not go for the theme? Anyway, you wanted a multiplayer game that lets you control suicidal pigs and that's what you've got.

Rider Quest by lordlittlepants 2018-04-25T22:40:41Z

Sorry to hear how things went. Sounds like it was a bumpy ride. I guess you know most of the things I have to say: it is unfinished and the controls are spongy (although fun). Next time you will have a better idea of what you can manage in the given time frame. The music is pretty nice though, and the concept is unconventional.

JUMP & RUN by Maxence 2018-04-28T01:34:54Z

The controls are a little weird: z-forward, s-backward, q-left, d-right, space-jump. It seems very incomplete, so I don't really know what you were going for. The textures seem fine though.

Post-structuralist non-binary worldtree defense by Pyotr 2018-04-28T02:31:22Z

The concept of using all alternative outcomes instead of chances definitely has quite some potential. Here however, it is just cumbersome to work through all of these variations. At some point the screens get so small that it is hard to tell which part is active right now. I'm sure some hardcore strategists can have some fun with this.

FANTASY FIGHTERS by pikachurian 2018-05-06T15:28:35Z

@pikachurian It's basically a simpler version of what the star ocean games do. Something that probably could have been done within the time of the Jam is to replace the defeat 4 bosses part with more grinding. That's why you let the game calculate as much as possible on their own, instead of writing everything by hand (e.g. MAXHP=40+(level*10)). Like that you can add more and more content without much effort, which is what you want when you have limited time to program. The graphics are nice and probably took some time, but are also inconsistent. It's better to keep it simple and reuse sprites. Good luck and have fun programming.

For Nether! by Kareshuya 2018-05-01T15:17:13Z

Please change the ground to anything different than that hot pink! Let the camera view the character at a bit of an angle, because you can only shoot straight forward you can't see what you're aiming at. Sound and a health bar would help to make this feel more like a game and less like a tech demo.

For Nether! by Kareshuya 2018-05-06T14:56:54Z

@Kareshuya I didn't mean to be harsh with my comment. Those were only the things I considered to be most relevant to fix. Feedback, because the comment section is meant for feedback. You are going to keep working on this, right? Everybody struggles with the time restraints, so I don't blame you. My game also isn't perfect or bug free, but it was a learning experience.

TetraMania by Bullex 2018-05-01T12:39:10Z

A tutorial, proper music and sound and a game that is actually fun. I guess the only negative point I have is that the boost is likely to harm you, because you are bound to crash into something afterwards. That aside, it's a great game.

Crane Command by Hyohane 2018-04-24T23:01:26Z

@TheStroyer Thanks for the useful input. Next time I will implement adjustable controls. And even though it is too late to add this to this game jam, here is a version that also allows you to move with the Q, E, A, D, Z, (Y for german keyboards) X, C buttons to move and S to skip https://www.dropbox.com/s/4e5iiq7doo9g8du/Crane%20Command%20ver_0_76.exe?dl=0 .

@Firefluid Glad you liked it. I aim to please.

@Darby-Costello Glad to hear that strategy seems to matter because I have hardly any experience with that. And yeah, it is very unfinished (the Game Over screens look... oh well), but if it's still fun then that's ok.

Crane Command by Hyohane 2018-04-26T21:49:47Z

@Sibi Thanks for the feedback. Can you recall in what situation the crash occurred? The healer exists, but you might not have seen it because the distribution of units is random and in favour of the PC. Or in case you meant whether the unit actually heals, you can hover your mouse over all units to see their status. The healer has an attack of -2, so yeah it exists.

edit: If the beginning is too static and cramped, you could move some units with the crane.

Crane Command by Hyohane 2018-04-26T22:29:15Z

@Sibi How odd, it just bounces back for me when I try to place a unit on another one. But now I know where to look, so thanks a lot ^^

Crane Command by Hyohane 2018-04-27T16:23:16Z

@Mathiouza Thanks! Next time I will include all features in both the description and tutorial. Moving the units over a field that does not simply consist of squares was a nightmare codeingwise and the controls are sadly a result of that.

Crane Command by Hyohane 2018-04-27T18:23:29Z

@dob Yeah the health should either have been on the units and the total stats of the active unit should be displayed. Your own units are a valid target (because of the healer) so you might have attacked your own guy by accident.

Crane Command by Hyohane 2018-04-28T11:18:23Z

@OhFiddleDiddle Really glad you liked it. Like I mentioned above the controls were originally intended to be different, but at least you are now prepared to play cataclysm dark days ahead ^^

@Shellfish Games Wow, thanks for the in depth feedback! At this stage of development the turn order is simply the order at which the units have spawned. I'm really happy to see that it was worth it to not just release what I had for the Compo and participate in the Jam instead. And I guess I can see what you mean with the colours.

Crane Command by Hyohane 2018-05-02T10:09:15Z

@Solrun Thanks for the feedback. Yes the movement options need a better indicator, but the arrows would be a bit much as there are 9 possible directions (you can use the crane to get behind enemy lines after all). For indicating the exact unit that is active I was thinking about a shader, a glowing outline. The idea behind the floor is that it is a compressed pile of toys, which sadly doesn't have a strong contrast with the units. A post post Ludum Dare builds is coming, so look forward to it.

@abhimonk Glad you liked it. Like I mentioned above the turn order is simply the order the units were spawned at. A later version of the game might allow the player more choice of which unit to use or at least a better option at skipping turns. The way I programed the game makes the controls a bit complicated, but I do have an Idea for mouse controls.

@VeryEvilTomato Good to hear that it is worth the effort.

Crane Command by Hyohane 2018-05-03T14:49:51Z

@Skytrias You can play the version I have mentioned to thestroyer https://www.dropbox.com/s/4e5iiq7doo9g8du/Crane%20Command%20ver_0_76.exe?dl=0 (played with Q,W,E,A,S,D,Z,X,C). I tried to participate in the Compo, so I made the music myself without much experience.

Crane Command by Hyohane 2018-05-04T12:11:19Z

@Mohamed-DKD Thanks for the feedback. I already learned my lesson regarding the installer and version 0.76 that I have linked here twice in the comments is just a single exe. I did mention in the tutorial that 5 is for skipping, but I could have been more clear about the controls (you can also move diagonally). I'm planing to use a mouse control that is going to be a bit more obvious. And thanks for recognizing the work I've put into the AI, you are the first to mention it. That really took me some work in spite of their limitations. Using multiple coins for a single action is something I haven't even considered yet, but that might make it into the final version.

Infinite Checkers by blake.s 2018-04-24T11:38:48Z

A nice and simple game that could use some instructions. Like stated at the download site you control the player with LBM and RBM but what isn't mentioned is that you change between black and white fields by dropping off the edge (something you usually avoid). Without knowing this, there are unsolvable situations which can cause some headache. That aside a few more interactable objects and levels could turn this game into a nice way to spend some time.

Card Jumble Combat by TheEpsi 2018-04-28T01:22:54Z

Catchy little song you've got there. Is there any point to blocking beside getting rid of cards? it seemed like it's always the better choice to attack. Did you originally intend to make the player press the combos they selected? It's been fun, even if it was a little too easy on all difficulties.

Spin.ENG.RefleX by bunnybreaker 2018-04-26T09:50:36Z

This is pretty great. It gets you eager to do it right, which is exactly how an educational game should be. The music is also very enjoyable. It could still be expanded by giving the option to add words yourself, but it is already good enough as is.

SCAPE CRAFT by DevBayer 2018-04-24T11:51:27Z

Typo at the download sites name, it's https://devbayer.itch.io/scpae-craft-ld41 not scape.

Avec ceci ? by NenadAkanovic 2018-05-09T16:23:01Z

As mentioned before, some objects seem impassable. Which is sad because I want my beard to grow. I want the biggest beard of them all and show off what a great chef I am! Jokes aside, it seems like a fun idea. The music, sound and graphics set up a nice atmosphere. How would you go about increasing difficulty at later levels? Spoiling ingredients, unyielding obstacles or food stealing vermin? There is still a lot that could be done and I hope to see more of this.

Cred's Job by Odlog Oglog 2018-04-28T00:56:37Z

A nice little platformer escort mission. It could really help to see the kings health too. The difficulty curve is a bit off, as there are harder and easier levels in an arbitrary order.

Beat and Keying by Rafael Endo 2018-05-01T14:22:54Z

Does this count as an educational game? I mean, it definitely helps you to find the keys quicker. You should limit the enemy's position to the screen, because once you knock them off screen and follow them the game gets kinda messy.

Platform Survival by BoostSimon 2018-04-27T14:41:40Z

It says the dll is missing. Could you still upload that, please?

Ted's Educational School by Diego Quintanilha 2018-04-27T15:09:58Z

So apparently it's hard to count to 100. Not seeing your own shots is a bit annoying and there is the lack of sounds, but all in all it seems to work as intended.

WinGuess - A Guessing game for Windows! by Scarlet 2018-05-03T22:34:40Z

It'd be nice if it would tell you whether the number is higher or lower... Yay pointless feedback...

BeatScroller by Toster 2018-05-03T22:46:36Z

Pretty nice game. I like how the progress in the game and in the music go hand in hand. It is a bit hard to tell which part of the ground will react to the beat before you actually see them change because all blocks look the same. That might be an intentional factor in difficulty, but I'd consider changing that. There is a glitch when you die while jumping that just shoot me over the map.

Fax Runner by Srob 2018-04-27T15:32:38Z

The execution is a bit lacklustre, but let's talk about the idea. So you are supposed to be the data stream delivering a message, right? The spelling part could be made relevant by making the player take a detour to a spell checker if they misspell a given text (e.g. make them listen to a text and then write it).

Pew Ch Pew by seanfowleruo 2018-04-25T21:54:38Z

Very nice. How many games offer you a music editor? Too few! I like the idea and think that this could be a very good game with some added length and variation (for both the enemies and towers). At this point it is kind of hard to lose, but that is an easy fix. A thumbs up from me. Song: https://www.dropbox.com/s/y2bcrpd1r0lpt6r/Tower%20Tunes.sng?dl=0

Museum ESC by bones 2018-05-01T13:40:37Z

There is a glitch that allows the guard to walk through the wall when you close the second door. Also the look command always displays the objects of the first room. Overall an interesting and sometimes challenging idea.

Survive the Date by Samurai Ducks 2018-04-24T23:36:38Z

An interesting idea, too few consider the feelings of necromancers and their bony minions. It has a lot of a typical cartoon or comic disaster date, although it would be better with some dialogue referring to the situation.

Sometimes it seems a bit arbitrary which answers satisfy her and there is sadly no rating at the end or an actual ending at all. It'd be nice to be able to leave the table to the left side or to walk through the dating zone without automatically getting back into conversation. Some sounds for striking and hitting could help.

Breakout CCG by L33pfr0g 2018-05-01T14:56:05Z

Interesting idea, but perhaps you cloud have mentioned that the ball just goes through the paddle if no card is selected. As a sidenote, Z and X are not next to each other on all types of keyboards, so rather use X and C.

An evening with Unity-Chan by YellowWinner 2018-05-01T12:51:26Z

I first had to rename a folder (adding a missing 2) and then couldn't get past the first screen. I'm asked to confirm all directional inputs, but neither the arrow keys nor wads seem to do anything. Can you offer any help?

CityTris by Radlith 2018-04-26T23:05:54Z

Showing the score while playing would be nice. The fact that the blocks don't drop makes the game more difficult in an interesting way. If the different type blocks would take different effects or interactions, then it could really become a city construction sim. Balancing the needs of the citizens and the town or renting out billboards that give extra money, but take up unusable space for some time. And when a row get's too full, it's bulldozed to make room for higher quality buildings. Could that work?
