LD43 — Sacrifices must be made

O' Soliloquy by Elmeri 2018-12-06T10:55:44Z

@stlunatick @luckyluke @raisethedead @kaeveris Thanks :) @kegnarok Comment tu as deviné ? How did you guess? :p @kegnarok @benjouille @nanda Yes, we wanted to make a game without an extensive manual or overly verbose tutorial. In that respect, we succeeded, but the goal of each level may not be clear enough… @benjouille @sadsmile Better audio feedback and design would have been great, but we didn't have enough time to tackle it properly. The bubble sound was initially a placeholder, but it made its way into the game. @nanda There was a bug in the build you played, whereby you couldn't actually finish the game… :/ This should be fixed now!

Ludum Dare: The Game by pantoufle 2018-12-04T10:59:52Z

Man, I could feel the intense game jam submission pressure all over again at the end! Thanks, this was really funny.

$Player Disconnected by Bomb-X 2018-12-05T20:18:15Z

I encountered the same error as harark, probably at the same place, and also while talking to the little girl after the elevator… The game has an otherwise great, dark mood!

THE MYSTERIOUS DISAPPEARANCE OF MORTIMER J.W. by xk_the_name 2020-04-25T21:55:26Z

This game combined the mood of a classic murder mystery with Silent Hill-style psychological horror. The action is very simple, but it works well to build up the tension. Good entry!

Adrenaline Rush by Elmeri 2020-04-23T16:30:41Z

@peterfiftyfour @airola Thanks for the screen bounds suggestion; we tried that at one point but found it frustrating not being able to exit the game with the mouse, so we didn’t investigate further…

@literal-games @quillwerth @jamieok Thank you :) We intentionally limited the scope to two mini-games in order not to burn out during the week-end, but we sure would have liked to add more! We had ideas for crew responsible of rotating the emergency light with a hand-crank and washing hands at lightning speed, all while driving the ambulance to avoid causing more accidents…

@theothersamp Thanks! I’ve got to admit I laughed a lot myself while working on the game. The controls are awkward but hey, have you ever given an adrenaline shot while in a moving vehicle? :D

@ristoretto The parallax is totally fake, just the foreground moving around randomly. But you’re right, it gives the scene much more depth!

@yxmx-rsx Thank you :)

Adrenaline Rush by Elmeri 2020-04-26T16:12:38Z

@mlho7 @thibaud-ligneul @effarek @tenaciousslug @guy-without-id Thank you all for the sweet comments :)

Adrenaline Rush by Elmeri 2020-04-26T18:14:22Z

@m-trigo Oh yeah you’re right. We uploaded it before creating the Ludum Dare page, and must have forgotten to add it when we submitted. This is fixed, thanks!

Finding Sam by nolanfa 2020-04-26T16:03:04Z

Wow, that’s impressive writing for such a short amount of time! Cute story, nice game :)

Life of the Party by OrdiNeu 2020-04-25T22:41:49Z

Everything was going pretty well until I started dancing, and that seemed to bring the party down. So realistic! Then here I was running around, trying to make everybody feel at home, when suddenly, pissed as hell I got stuck inside a wall and _then_ the party died. Well, I wish I could say this never happened to me in real life.

Bonsai by Literal Games 2020-04-23T17:07:01Z

This was so great! I loved to — snip, snip — carve those leaves out of the way and the tree into shape. I helped four trees grow, and when I stopped I didn’t care that they were 100% accurate to the target shape, they just felt alive and doing their own thing. I know bonsai is about coercion and perfection but watching the pixels feels nice, too. Beautiful game :)

Future of Delivery by guy_without_id 2020-04-26T15:42:36Z

Cool concept, I’d rather see a giant grocery mech than delivery drones in the future! The game does need some polishing, though: aiming the carts is a bit frustrating since they seem to be launched at rather low speed, not what you’d expect from a turret — but I understand you don’t want to injure your clients with their groceries.

Keep It Alive from nuclear explosion by IzhVaryag 2020-04-25T22:03:43Z

Ha ha I couldn’t help but imagine the construction workers having to go to work on apocalypse day just to put up walls and shit on the road, while losing their wallets all over :D I had a good time!

You are likely to be eaten by a grue by TenaciousSlug 2020-04-23T16:37:55Z

Argh I couldn’t get past one minute, the grue kept hearing me through the wall! I had a fun time, good job!

Crank-Light by Quillwerth 2020-04-23T21:05:45Z

Thanks for leaving the suggestion to play, over at my game. This is actually the first game in this jam that I’ve _won_! Everyone seems to be making impossible to win games. Yours, while challenging, was fun and rewarding. The cranking action was a nice invention, and I felt really lost in the woods. Good job!

The Last Hearth by Jorim 2020-04-23T16:01:57Z

The game is hard, but of course I don’t think it’s supposed to have an ending. I like the graphics, particularly the fast animation of the character’s legs. :D

Dream Rock by NoNumbersGames 2020-04-23T16:00:27Z

I like the minimalism here, and the way you expressed the conflict between taking care of a relationship, and finding time for oneself. I’m proud I released the rock into the wilds :)

Goose Typing Attack by ehtd 2018-05-06T21:09:26Z

I started this comment saying that after many tries, I couldn't get that human. But then I looked back at the image at the top of this page, and figured I *had* to see the victory animation, so I tried once more, and made it! Guess the game was actually good at improving typing skills — albeit for a limited number of words ;p

Hyper Drift Mayor by DiFFtY 2018-04-24T17:45:24Z

I believe I would have made both a lousy driver and a lousy politician, the citizens didn't like me so much on my first game. I got reelected, but then the game crashed. Then I felt like a true politician. Great job! 👍 BTW Is the number of tomatoes somehow linked to the environment bar? As in, more vegetables on the trees => more on the road?

Hyper Drift Mayor by DiFFtY 2018-05-04T20:34:57Z

@DiFFtY Please note I play on Linux, so a crash isn't so unexpected :)

Medieval Comedy DefJam : Heckler Edition by kyperbelt 2018-04-27T19:05:57Z

Oooh, I thought that was the joke. Surreal humor is always effective. Nice mix there! One cool addition would have been the jokes written on the cards, and matched to comebacks, a bit as in Monkey Island...

Karaoke Ninja by GastricSparrow 2018-04-25T21:55:59Z

Besides the nice puzzles, I liked the way that music is turned into a kind of architecture, as in, I sing a scale and get a stair, or I sing a long note and brief ones to get a sort of wall and windows. Makes one want to form a harmony quintet to beat the game while drawing nice shapes. Great job!

Red Shirt Engineer by Noxbuds 2018-04-23T21:06:33Z

As already noted, the controls for the space view are hard to get at first. I had the forward thrusters on, thought it wasn't doing anything, and escaped the fight. Afterwards I was just slipping against the fixed stars in the pointless infinity of space I guess, because the other spacecraft was nowhere to be seen. I wish I'd had a pointer to the enemy location, so I could continue the fight and not restart the game.

Apart from that, this was great! It had been a while since I'd used those symbols.

Modern Bowlfare by Derek Wilson 2018-05-04T23:02:36Z

This was hilarious! The perfect tool for the job. Kind of made me think of Worms' grenades, which I could never use properly.

.PERIOD by Olivier Millochau 2018-04-23T20:16:13Z

This was a nice little story, with as believable punctuation characters as I've ever read ;) I found a bug: you can type any number to gain abilities, even if you don't have that number (for exemple `dash100`). This makes the game much less challenging.

.PERIOD by Olivier Millochau 2018-04-23T21:15:03Z

@Olivier Millochau No problem! Actually, I'm not too much of a hardcore gamer, I mightn't have been able to finish the game if it weren't for that bug ;)

A Fourth Idea by pladams9 2018-04-23T23:53:00Z

It's the first time I've read interactive fiction during a game jam, and the feeling is really strange, yet enjoyable, a complete mood swing. Your piece feels really eerily quiet, with the quaint and sometimes morbid descriptions interleaved with Jeffries' deep observations. I couldn't finish the story without looking at the source (is that cheating or skimming?), but the feeling I got, that the dead were more alive than the living, was something new. Thank you for that!

1-2-3 Soleil! by ZappedCow 2018-04-23T19:33:46Z

This is adorable! It is also somewhat hard, you're teaching your child the right stuff :p Félicitations, c'était vachement chouette ! Ça me rappelle de bons moments dans la cour de récré ;)

Shit Country Sweeper by Damienp 2018-04-25T20:54:47Z

@ZappedCow Damn, good catch! The connections between countries were generated automatically, and some connections are missing or inaccurate. Thanks, I fixed it now :)

Shit Country Sweeper by Damienp 2018-04-26T19:39:06Z

@hexagore Yeah, I was surprised as well! At first I thought that ~80 mines for the whole planet would be suitable for medium difficulty. Turns out it wasn't *at all*. 15 is already kind of hard...

@N8M8 Aww man thanks for the let's play, that means a lot! About the negativity of the whole *shit* thing, I meant to create a backstory about a nation's president saying derogatory comments about other countries. I didn't get around to doing it, but the name stuck.

@LMB Minesweeper has always felt like a war situation to me, and yet it is so abstract that after a short while playing, I forget that it's about explosive devices built and used to harm civilians. I wanted to reconcile the two distinct ideas that are the mechanics and the “backstory” of Minesweeper, if there is such a thing, that is a geopolitical one. The political overtone in the game ended being slight due to lack of time... I know of *at least* one bug. ;)

Shit Country Sweeper by Damienp 2018-04-27T18:13:39Z

@GastricSparrow Thank you! As stated in the *Thanks* section, I used border data from [naturalearthdata](http://naturalearthdata.com/). So it took me a short while to understand the data format, and to write a script to generate connections between countries, but I didn't trace each border. Besides, this task is not only tedious, it requires geographical and political knowledge which I do not have, since some borders and even states are contested.
