This was more fun and a bigger challenge than I thought it would be. The accuracy score is great playback for the player.

I sucked at it, but I loved it. I love how you took the idea of racing the beam and made it an interactive showcase of how it worked.
Interesting little game! I'm absolutely terrible at it -- especially when one combo colour showed up right after a different combo, and I found how to make white very early on -- but it's a lot of fun. The art style really captures the feel of old 80s CRT screens. Extremely fun, well-designed puzzler: great work!
@tsaot thank you!
====
@wheelsx ayy glad to see you here! Thank you very much! Congratz on the highscore btw, it isn't that high indeed, but you're #1 at the moment ๐ We wanted to hit a good balance between fun gameplay and showcasing the technology, so I'm glad you saw that ๐
====
@digital-bacon Happy to see you in here! We thought it would be fun to leave all raygun capabilities unlocked from the start, so you could just choose to do whatever you want. Later on you can even use arrow keys to adjust the brightness, but that option is secretly enabled the whole time so in level 1 you can use it too! Although, the score will be negatively affected by that ๐ Thanks for the other feedback too btw, glad you liked it
Simple and fun idea! Using the RGB keys seem a bit strange at first, but somehow works ๐ Great background image, cool idea to use audio for the tutorial and nice feature that it automatically downloads the image you created
Wow I sucks with rythm games, and this one was clearly not an exception ๐คฃ But I find the idea innovative, neat and well executed, and this is not because I'm bad with this kind of game that I can't recognize a good one, well done!
Omg I'm so bad at this Love the game overall ! very interesting concept ! and very difficult for me ! (I don't remember instruction past 2seconde lol) GG !
@oadt We were surprised too that the R G and B keys are so conveniently placed ๐ I hope the layout does not change that much for other locales though ๐ค Having the tutorial as audio was a big guess for me, so thanks for your feedback! I really didn't know if people would like it and if it would be helpful
====
@lereveur ayy great to see you here! As long as you had a great time and somehow could recognize the pictures, then you already won in my eyes ๐
====
@myheadmess thanks!
This is a strong one Wouter, well done. But it took me too long to realize that the way to play is to *hold* the buttons, and to figure out that it should be held for as long as the letter's line is stretching. I will get back to this masterpiece and with a longer feedback at some point in the near future.
hi @kr4ft3r , great to see you here! I'm glad you liked it :-) I have to ask though, did you hear the audio tutorial? Because I think it is pretty well stated that the gamer should hold down the button?
I see that you're on the highscore table, which means you finished the main game ๐ If you would like to relisten the audio fragments, then you have to reset the game from the main menu That way the tutorial will play again. I'm curious about your game! I have a big list of games to play, so one of these days yours will be next for me to play
Looking forward for the longer feedback, I always enjoy yours, as you are not afraid to speak your mind and criticize the less polished parts
I SUCK at rhythm games and I sucked pretty hard on this one. How the hell did I get first place (so far)? My accuracy was atrocious. But I must admit, this is shockingly good. The idea, presentation and execution are chef's kiss. Well done! I've got nothing to say really, other than the margins between are a bit stingy as you have to be pixel perfect and that there is some input lag I think. This game is a blast.
@skvader-418 ayy thanks for sharing your screenshot! โค๏ธ I think I made the scoring a bit too harsh indeed, you're not the first that says they suck at the game haha. But everyone seems to have fun so that is a big W in my eyes ๐ Thank you for the big compliments btw, glad you liked it
This was so good, so creative, and so cool, and I am SO bad at it lol - As soon as cyan was introduced, I completely fell to shambles.
Adding magenta into the mix didn't help
Then things got a little tiny bit better when white got added
The funniest thing is, I was trying my absolute hardest on each of these attempts, I am just incredibly awful at rhythm games, *and* I'm awful at games where I need to coordinate several inputs ๐ I get mind-flooded quickly
The tutorial voiceover was incredibly charming; it gave me the vibes of a 90s museum exhibition or science show, in the best possible way.
I sadly have no constructive feedback to give! I thought the whole package was very well done! I also enjoyed the peek at your daily driver CRT! How well does it perform with modern video? Do you have to put a downsampler somewhere in the mix to get everything to play nice?
The premise of the game is spot-on; turning a small disaster into a tech challenge feels really charming. The retro aesthetic and the whole old television find narrative work together wonderfully. It gives the puzzle elements a fantastic layer of nostalgia.
Hooooooooooooooooooo I did *not* do well. I'm usually OK with rhythm, but Raytracer **WRECKED** me! ๐
Ironically I found hard to be easier with my ears because it just sounds like my DAW's metronome, tried it a couple of times and I actually kinda got the hang of drawing something! (keyword: kinda) If you've seen my score (MONTYBEANS) you'll see my tactic was only so helpful lol.
Anyway, very fun!
@koolruz thank you for including some pictures! Life of a CRT is hard as you can imagine, they need to do that 60 times a second ๐ But you had fun and that is all I care about. Thanks about your compliment regarding the voiceover. This is the first time I did some real editing in Audacity apart from splitting the clips and removing some noise
Regarding our setup: We have got 5 devices connected on there: - Chromecast - Nintendo switch - TV receiver box - Blueray player - External input
All of those go into a simple HDMI switcher. That switcher is connected to an HDMI to Composite converter, which does downsample everything indeed. Then it splits off to a bluetooth transmitter and the TV itself. The bluetooth transmitter makes the audio receivable by any of our bluetooth speakers in the house, so we can "stream" music from the tv to other places. The whole thing works wonderfully. The picture is a bit squiched, but after a view minutes your brain gets used to that. So with the chromecast it is essentially a smart-tv. I can stream anything I want with it :)
Here's a picture of the whole mess, please don't call the firedepartment ๐ This has been working for 8 years now spagetthi.jpeg
@mavvy as long as you had fun ๐ So, what was difficult with the sound? A metronome should be helping, right? Or was it out-of-sync? Really curious about that
@wouter52 One thing that contributed to my difficulties was my keyboard, the G key wants a holiday.
The time-keeping part is a me thing. I'm used to the metronome counting "**1** 2 3 4 **1** 2 3 4 **1**..." whereas easy just gives me "**1**...**1**..." and then I have to work out the division for the beats myself, sometimes I miss and start over/under compensating. Often, I am listening for the drummer (aka the keeper of time) to bring me back to earth. Guess I'm just used to the DAW life where no matter how awfully I play it, I can correct it, whereas here it's more like a live performance and asks for a bit of finesse. That's not a bad thing, just means I need more practice at it is all. Again, I really dig this! ๐
@mavvy aaah I see! We actually had 1 2 3 4 at one stage of development, but it was veeery fast. Like 4 times in under a second. It was really chaotic. But I get now what the struggle was. If you're hard wired like that than it is difficult do deviate. Thanks for sharing!
reaaaally nice and unique!! I sucked at it as soon as it involved cyan, magenta and yellow in the same image but otherwise congrats for making this great game!
@slyz Thank you!
Such a brilliant and clever take on the theme! The literal pun on 'Raytracer' โ using the actual electron gun and racing the beam with the R, G, and B keys to paint the CRT โ is pure genius. It feels so tactile and genuinely retro, and using your actual Beovision TV in the visuals looks awesome. Left full ratings across all categories! If you have a minute later to check out more jam projects, weโd love if you took a look at our game Meow Bomb as well. Best of luck with the jam!
Pinging a few of you to ask which images you got ๐ค @eugenik @nursultan @Wheelsx
Very unique! What stood out the most was the inclusion of voice acting, it really set the mood! I already suck at rhythm games, combining channels caused me to really scramble to remember the right key combinations haha. I really like that you unlock a "sandbox" mode at the end which also saves screenshots, very cool!
@marks Thanks for playing! Feel free to share some creations if you made them and want to share ๐ As long as you had fun, that is all that matters. I also suck at the game haha The voice acting was done in a way we never did yet, so it was kindof an experiment. Glad you liked it, that is useful feedback, thanks!
@wouter52 Do you have any issues with legibility of text in games when you downscale? I remember that back in the day the jump to HD-first games was what made me ultimately have to upgrade from my CRT to a flatscreen, because I couldn't read any of the UI elements in Assassin's Creed ๐
Also, I forgot to ask! Did the CRT shader from Octrobat last year end up being a useful resource at all for this? (It's totally cool if the answer is no, I'm just super curious ๐ )
@koolruz oh yea no, I can't read those small details indeed. Really have to squint my eyes for some of the smaller UI elements. I'm not really a console gamer though, so I don't really care. Lizz uses the switch in handheld mode most of the time. So there is not really a problem
Ah yeah the Ocrobat CRT effect has been an unconscious inspiration I think. It did cross my mind a few times, but I haven't looked at the code or anything. I just winged it as I went. Wanted to add some color distortions too, but totally forgot to implement that.
I liked the vibrant colors with the black background of your game back then. It really let the CRT effect shine
I think I'm glad I picked *easy mode* at first but even with that I struggled with the additional colors, though it's more of a skill issue. It's an awesome entry, I love the take on the theme and that I even get a picture of my own as a result of playing. I struggled when lines started with a color change (or `x`), but I should have just relied on audio cues probably.
And it's one of my favorite entries so far, to be honest. Image uploads don't seem to be working for me now on LD page, but my first attempt (on easy) was pretty [poor](https://drive.google.com/file/d/1hmicHC1VXFv5Hb0KjtCRJ0kO-K0wySSy/view?usp=sharing), second (on normal) went [better](https://drive.google.com/file/d/1KoOZJQl_GUI0zWSKIaJ6UA8PK-uxVXlX/view?usp=sharing). I think my score (under "DAVE") of [75.2%](https://drive.google.com/file/d/1pr4dGHp15DPKEcC-AjJPrYnS9yFU_5tl/view?usp=sharing) is quite good.
I've spent quite a lot of time on playing your entry, and I had fun! Thanks, and congrats!
I don't know how accuracy worked, but I must be so bad at the game because I got 0% on all levels :') The idea is great, although I don't know if I could play it for too long before finding it repetitive ^^'
This was great. I found it hilarious every time I messed up and splurged chaotic rainbow colors everywhere. Missed opportunity for a hand to bang on the top of the TV in a demanding/questioning way if you mess up after a good streak. I would have probably died from that. Screenshot_20261021_192520.png
Really nice work!
genuinely one of the coolest game jam games i've ever played, the theming is super charming, with the graphics, voice acting and audio. I was a bit confused about the point of the gameplay at first, but seeing the completed image was a really fun moment of realization
Cool idea! This is definitely 5/5 on theme at least:) Good work!
The game is quite challenging, but I really enjoyed it! The hardest part for me is the button combinationsโespecially when switching, for instance, from blue to yellow. Itโs an excellent game!

Cool game design, cool graphics and cool outcome! Love it when you give me a picture of my random drawing. The game itself is quite challenging, but I had a great time even though I end up 0% for most levels.
raytracing is really hard. Very unique!
Tried drawing something ๐ณ๏ธโ๐
I'm satisfied with being second place in the highscore for now ๐ - could be better but I kept getting the mixed colors confused (pure skill issue, I know).
Super innovative idea, nice :)
That really gave my fingers a workout! The idea is developed in an interesting way
@marudziik ay Dave! (I suppose?) Thanks for sharing! At the time you were 1st place, with 75% accuracy. I think that is impressive, as the accuracy calculations are relentless haha
I agree that the beginning of the lines were much harder than they maybe should have been. Maybe a horizontal blanking interval with a special sound would have been easier.
I'm honored to read that you find this your favorite thusfar, that is a big compliment! Thanks!
@remink I don't see this game getting a steam page in its current state ๐ Its a fun experience for 5 or so levels and then the novelty wears out Glad you liked it!
@lone-wolf haham that would have been a nice easter egg ๐ or maybe it could have been an option at the end of each level to reveal the true picture you should have drawn ๐ค Love your free form art! Its cute ๐ค
@mcalmic @jonasolsson @elstep @crotonyl-alcohol @stefan-b @nnnnneeeedddd @darkwing00duck Thank you all! โค๏ธ
@wendel-scardua Thanks for sharing! The pride flag came out pretty good ๐ณ๐
Wow, this was so fun!! Really perfect for the theme, too. And, I think, a very inventive concept! Executed well, for sure :) I liked the sound design as well, voice acting felt fitting, and little sounds were perfect; it kinda came out having this meditative feeling to it :) The colours are super pretty, and the gradual addition of combinations was perfect. And, most importantly, the freeform mode is a splendid idea!!
I will admit I was not super good at this game but I tried my best xD
I really liked the little pictures in the levels themselves, very cute :3 Though I am not sure what the yellow tower with (was it blue?) eye represented xD I am not 100% certain about the last level as well, maybe these are boats in the sea near those orange/red thingies that usually float in the sea marking the uhm length/depth/etc I don't know xD
And then ofc I tried drawing myself, I really liked the introduction of different vibrancy! Though the fact I can't pause and think but have to draw continously made it pretty hard... ^^'
I have to present my poorly drawn masterpieces though!
This is... I dunno... A pyramid? (I wanted to draw a sun and then it kinda kept stretching?? I guess I thought I had a longer canvas somehow?? XD) And a white bird flying in front?
And this is... ehhh... an entrance to a Water Temple?:D
Really inventive and fun, I enjoyed your game a lot! ^v^
@kanity ayy thank you so much for sharing! โค๏ธ To be honest, some pictures are a mistery for me too when I need to draw them on screen. @lizz made 30 of em, devided into 5 levels. So the're random too! Pikachu is among them, as is a pink elephant ๐ And many more. I think you drew Pikachu, that was "the tower with blue eyes" I believe there was red in there too, right? The last level is a windmill with some clouds
Love the pictures you shared! It's a real challenge to get an idea beforehand and then just execute the idea flawlessly, as the beam does not stop or slow down. I had an idea at first to make it "overdraw" so you can make corrections, but later I decided that this would be funnier and easier xD
Glad you liked the sound design! That was my first real attempt at audio editing. It turned out pretty good if I say so myself ๐
@wouter52 I should've taken a screenshot of Pikachu(?) xD Oh wow, there are so many... Right, I read in the description there are (50 even?) a lot of pictures to draw but then I went on playing and completely forgot about that line xD
Yeah I think it's fine without making corrections, it's really good as is, I think that continous drawing has a certain spark in it, makes it more special :D Difficult in a good way, I would say.
And as someone who loves working with audio and does voice overs, it actually makes me super happy to see jam games with voiceovers also!! And yeah, I think the sound design turned out perfect :)
I like the RGB key controls; they work just about equally well for us Dvorak users!
It took me a moment to figure out that I was supposed to hold the color until the next 'x', not just for one square/beat, but my second playthrough got 28.6% instead of 0%, so, progress! Loved the voiceovers. Still a little confused about what the accuracy numbers represent. I know I did bad on my first run, but I think I got at least one segment right, so a score of precisely zero feels surprising.
Haaa :))) CRT TV ! You *nailed* the theme exceptionally well! The narration, the old tv, things just fit perfectly! Good job on the mood!
Now, why did I always get 0% XD - I don't know, maybe I am too dumb for this.

Thanks for the experience, appreciate the *old techy* feel :))
Hello my dear friends. There are so many positive comments here! I thought to myself, โWhat have Wouter and Lizz made this time to draw such a crowd?โ So I gave it a try... What an interesting way to interpret the theme of this Ludum Dare! Sure, the gameplay is really simple, but itโs addictiveโyou just want to see what picture will emerge at the end, and it's cool. I think thereโs potential to explore this core mechanic further. The old-screen effect is well done and not too harsh. I had fun playing, even if I sucked. Thank you for this interesting entry and for your comment on my own game. I really appreciate your support. I wish you all the best! ++
@jacobwinters ayy great to see you here! I never thought gamers would use a Dvorak keyboard layout. How do you do that when a game requires WSDA controls? Do you like games with customizable controls better because of that? I'm really curious!
Regarding the accuracy, it is relentless. Maybe I could have done it better, but it works by counting the average amount of errors per 'pixel'. Each pixel has 29 subpixels and it is a little more forgiving around the outer edges of each pixel. If the average error rate is more than 4, then the accuracy is 0% ๐
@aweskybear , yeah about the accuracy... it is a bit too relentless. Maybe I could have done it better. It works by counting the average amount of errors per โpixelโ. Each pixel has 29 subpixels and it is a little more forgiving around the outer edges of each pixel. If the average error rate is more than 4, then the accuracy is 0% sweat_smile
I can imagine that it feels a bit off. Glad you liked it though!
@geckoo1337 Well well, the crowd isn't that big when compared to other's ๐, but it is a crowd full of friends and acquaintances. I like that more than a whole bunch of unknown people. That's why I love this community so much. After a few years, some names stand out. Like yours! Glad you liked the game! I never thought about the anticipation this game creates with each new level, thanks for that insight!
To be honest, I think the novelty of the game wears off pretty fast after a few levels. I don't really have ideas to spruce it up. Though you think the game has potential? Do you have ideas what to add then? I was thinking: some other CRT's to choose from. Maybe a miniseries you need to draw. Have you ever played Max Payne? That game had little TVsets with still images and some epic voice overs depicting a soap opera. It was hilarious haha. Maybe that could be something?
Here's a link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=alHZlAYUE7U
Thanks for coming to the stream! Here's the VOD: https://www.twitch.tv/videos/2910887967
If I had more time I could probably get really good at this game xD Incredible work!
I absolutely love the concept and the vibes! The tutorial delivery is super cool, I have honestly never seen anything like it before. The fact that you can just skip it and start playing immediately, but still get all the information you need while playing, is just genius.
As for the controls, pressing R, G, and B on the keyboard is not very convenient at first, but it feels like you can get used to it with a bit of practice or maybe I would just make a really terrible TV, he-he.
I am just curious about the tutorial voice acting โ did you record it yourself or use an AI tool?
@mateusboga thanks for playing! It was cool to see someone outside of my friendgroup play. It gave some good insights :-) Are you streaming again tonight?
@mcinnamoon ayy great to see you here! Thanks for the detailed feedback All the voices are recorded by me, myself and I ๐ I would have added that to the AI Usage section if I used AI for that.
You can see my workflow in the recording I made: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IyGXPTwx5bc at 4:48. You can see me create the dialogs, recording it and then I did some edits. You can freezeframe it and use "<" and ">" keys on your keyboard to inspect each frame ๐ Since a few jams I record my jams because I find it cool and to give a little proof that this thing is handcrafted โ๏ธ
Most games look at the physical position of the key being pressed, not the character the key is mapped to, so `WASD` controls still work for me even though the letters those keys would make in a text box are ` On the web I think it's determined by whether you look at `KeyboardEvent.code` or `KeyboardEvent.key`. Incidentally, that means JS can compare the two to infer what keyboard layout you're using. Firefox tries to close the fingerprinting vector when you have privacy.resistFingerprinting enabled, which re-breaks WASD for me even when the game is using `.code`. Half the time when I'm playing LD games I just reopen them in Chromium :P On the productivity software side, I've gotten totally used to Ctrl-{X,C,V} being far away from each other, even though 'C' is the only one where the letter makes sense ยฏ\\\_(ใ)\_/ยฏ
Ah, now I see, they created the Innovation score for this entry =D
Very nice game, brilliant idea with a proper execution. A little too hard for me but it's the kind of hard that makes you want to play again.
Congratulations.
