Fun little game. Shooting seems less then useful though (or I just suck.) it just gets me killed every time I try to shoot them also the sound it plays when you die seems a bit loud compared to the other noises it scared me the first time. Oh also an arrow or something pointing to the mother ship when it is off screen would be helpful (unless that is the intended gameplay.), I got lost a few times and had to loop around for a while till I found the ship again.

All in all, a good game just needs some more polish (don't like all of these games do though).

john-wuller 2023-01-10 03:50

This game is a blast! I (unironically) loved flying around, spamming the spacebar, and collecting wheat!

My main problem is that due to getting lost, I stayed completely scrolled out to see the entire map, but this took away the any sense of surprise. It took away some of the fun of flying around and getting lost. I wish there were some indicator when scrolled in of where the mothership was.

I also realized - I don't think you destroy any lasers that miss. After I died one game and respawned, I saw a line of lasers I had fired last game shooting off into the distance. After a few games, the page became unresponsive and crashed. Taking a quick look at your code, I'm not sure what's causing this, as [the prefabs are destroyed when they become invisible](https://github.com/cobear25/Space-Harvester/blob/main/Assets/Bullet.cs#L19-L22):

```csharp private void OnBecameInvisible() { Destroy(gameObject); } ```
I may look into this more later if I have time.
All in all, fantastic game, like seriously. The sound, particle effects, and everything comes together so well. It's been added to a private collection I have of my favorite game jam games!
Nice arcade game :). I did not know that I could zoom out until the end of the game. I spend a lot of time trying to find my mothership :/
Thanks for the game!
bartalomew 2023-01-10 10:15
really enjoyed the controlls, leaving the orbits in a perfect angle is sooo satisfying. had fun with this entry!
cobear25 2023-01-10 16:35
@zwodahs @john-wuller @tristan-doell Thanks for playing! Yes, getting lost is a major issue. If I had had maybe one more hour before the deadline that's what I would have taken care of. In a future build for sure though!
Wow, great job, the controls and gameplay felt really smooth, and i love the interaction with the plants as they grow, that "tick" felt really good. The only complaint is that those stinky red thingies were annoyingly good at predicting my movement.. just a whee bit of inertia so i could dodge them would be nice. But then again, maybe i just need more practice =]
shimmerscale 2023-01-11 02:54
Fun little game! The controls were intuitive and felt really nice, especially the way that the ship would automatically go all the way around a planet to get all the wheat if you steered it correctly. The enemies were kind of difficult to kill, but I got the hang of it after a few playthroughs. I liked the variety in sizes and designs of planets too.
rincs 2023-01-12 03:50
That was REALLY fun, and I definitely hope that you push with polishing this little gem up!! :D
ninnec 2023-01-13 17:19
This is a really cool game. Very unique game play and one of the most innovative entries I've played so far
diana-shuke 2023-01-13 17:49
Quite nostalgic. Reminds me of legendary nokia's snake :D Live it! Great job!
picross 2023-01-13 17:57
Fun game! I really liked how it looked when I was carrying a ton of cargo. Reminds me of snake. Lining up shots on the hexagons was fun. Nice work!
justinmullin 2023-01-13 18:10
This is quite fun! Cruising around the planets to pick up a ton of wheat is a great feeling, and there's a nice challenge to dodging the hexagons. In general I found that aiming at speed was tough enough that it was better to just avoid the enemies, though that might not hold true in the later stages that I am not skilled enough to reach.
harmadillo 2023-01-13 19:02
Great game. The gravity effect of the planets was a lot of fun, as was the flying in general.
jordantanner 2023-01-13 19:42
@cobear25 Awesome compo entry! I really liked the way the ship orbits the planets, and as others have mentioned, fluidly leaving one orbit and entering another feels really good. Nice use of the theme, too. I love combat in games so I left wanting there to be a little more of that, but I understand that's not really the focus of this type of game.
brainles-etertainment 2023-01-13 19:43
Game is really cool but really HARD to play. I got crashed almost instantly. AI chasing me without any chance to survive. Technically everything looks good except the sound. Crashing sound too loud and hurts my ears :(
fnelix 2023-01-13 20:38
This is good, i really like the flow of jumping from planet to planet. Controls work nicely.
klaus-peter 2023-01-13 21:51
Wow the movement and interaction are really fun ^^ the sliding around the planets is quiet satisfying! I think it is just a bid sad that it's so difficult to defend against incoming hexagons.
pianoman373 2023-01-14 02:35
The movement combined with the goal of slingshotting around the planets is really satisfying and fun. I found the enemies a bit too difficult to fight though. I eventually figured out that you can let them chase you, slow down and flip around to shoot them which felt super fun and satisfying. The only problem is it only takes one missed shot and its over. I think if the player had more health it could let them figure out this srategy of fighting the enemies.
cobear25 2023-01-14 02:49
Great suggestion @pianoman373
sephowepho 2023-01-24 04:25
Real nice entry, it feels great to control (:thumbsup:)! There is a *sharp* learning curve to it, as you die in one hit and it's not precise enough to reliably kill anything (without extensive practice). I loved circling the planets and watching my trail of grain get longer and longer -- the game is really satisfying to play, it feels so nice! :grin:
Overall, I liked it but I couldn't get very good at it in my few attempts; with a little more time put in, I could really get into this! Good job, keep it up (especially for a compo entry, I'm impressed)! :clap:
underlig 2023-01-24 04:30
Oh this was fun, you managed to get the same feel that the first stage of Spore gives, this could easily become addicting with abit more features, and some more gameplay. Great controls, the shooting works very well, and just the feel of the whole is really good. Only thing i feel its lacking is literally just more gameplay features and content. Great work =)
hayricakir 2023-01-24 05:18
Nice art, music, and fun gameplay, great game feel when shooting lasers. Also loved the gravity concept. One feedback: It takes some time for game to start because at the start there are no crops, I would suggest that you can start the game with some crops to harvest and easier enemies because it is really hard to kill enemies at the start for a new player. Other than that, really solid entry, good job mate! If you would like to shred some zombies with your tractor while drifting, you can check out my entry :)
lizelive 2023-01-24 05:23
I didn't expect to see a game in space, wonderful job. the controls are tight and i really loved it. bit jittery sprite though. love the arrow that tells you where the ship is would be really funny if their was a mothership per screen. also audio clipping was kinda not fun
williwiderstand 2023-01-24 05:42
Pretty neat gravity-based arcade game, feels great to control too. Like others mentioned, the audio levels were a bit unbalanced and the shooting mechanic a bit too finicky. Definitely a good entry, especially for a compo submission!
tomssuli 2023-01-24 07:30
Heyy, nice game! There are not many "cave flyers" anymore nowadays. Even if this wasn't in a cave it reminds me of classics like Gravity Force by Kingsoft or Wings by Miika Virpioja.
I loved the feeling of speed and tight controls in this one and the mechanic that you could graze-orbit planets. Graphics were also fine apart from the enemies that looked like it was just a hitbox attacking me. The string of crops hanging from the ship looked satisfying.
Good music, maybe a bit "loud" in it's melodies, but playtime was so short before dying so the music fit, giving intense mood.
Overall very nice compo entry!
I'd like to see this expanded maybe with different enemy types, enemy mothership where the enemies spawn from, purchaseable weapons, drones, upgrades etc. If you make a post jam update, tag me in the comments! :slight_smile:
adam-gould 2023-01-24 08:38
That was a fun experience - it felt very polished. A really good arcade-style game - it reminded me of Asteroids, which is why it took me a minute to try and unlearn the muscle memory of "don't touch anything EVER at all".
If I had one criticism/suggestion, I think I would have liked to be able to shoot with something other than the spacebar (mouse would have been preferable I reckon).
stefan-laimer 2023-01-24 09:33
Super fun game! And once I figured out you can scroll out and used the "just fly backwards"-strategy, I got pretty far and could have probably made it further if I didn't get cocky hahaha
kostya 2023-01-24 10:07
Love mechanic with sticking to a planet and long tail of crops
sillyman987 2023-01-24 13:14
Wow this is really smooth and well made! There were no bugs, (unlike my game) and was fun enough to try and play over and over to reach new highscores! My best was 25!
jvdwijk 2023-01-24 17:28
This was a really good entry! Liked the gravity mechanic, even though it killed me most of the time 😭 I felt like it was a bit difficult to aim your gun, and with the speed of the enemies you die quite quickly.
Either way, had a lot of fun! Furthest I've gotten so far was 63 :)
simsax 2023-01-24 21:25
In its apparent simplicity, this is such a great idea. I love it!
hawkin 2023-01-25 01:19
Instantly one of my favorites! The flying controls are satisfying and not frustrating like they sometimes are. The shooting gets a little challenging, but I found that it helps to manage your speed wisely on your approach. It is really satisfying that the game automatically hugs you close to planets as you are collecting. I think that shows a good understanding of what would be fun for the player (versus trying to make tight circles). I love the character that the modernist art gives the planets, too. Overall, the visual design is simple but appealing. Unfortunately I want to take off some points because the enemies were characterless hexagons, but really the game as a whole is a treat! Great job on the audio track! It really hit the mood.
