Cool idea! You should develop this further, if it had some interesting team management options in between match days, managing player abilities etc, it could be great. Well done!

nidup 2018-04-24 17:53

Interesting concept and cool entry, controls could be imho improved by using only mouse (select, then menu with actions) or only keyboard, good job

evil-as-shit 2018-04-24 17:54

Good concept! I got stuck on the 6th level though. Not sure how to get past that one!

khmaraches 2018-04-24 17:56

A fun game - the controls are a bit counterintuitive however.

no-beans-please 2018-04-24 18:01

This is a very good and fun idea, with a good implementation. I looks to me like it took a lot of effort to make both the game and so many interesting scenarios. Good job!

la-mecanique-du-plastique 2018-04-24 18:01

It's a decent puzzle game, congratulations ! The levels are well designed, this is quite catchy. Some polish on the controls may be useful, the mouse/keyboard seems to me a bit complicated for the simple required actions.

Polishing side, I would love to see this game with an emphase on the soccer feel, maybe with more animations, ball weight, and crowd shouts !

eudes-franco 2018-04-24 18:09

Hey, this is a nice puzzle, fantastic! unfortunately i dont have friends to play, but i will save it! xD The only problem was the controls, "too much clicking required", maybe if it was all keyboard or all mouse would make it smoother, I would love to see even more players type, it could be a very complex puzzle! xD Good job!

firefluid 2018-04-24 18:09

Wow nice and funny game!

clue 2018-04-25 00:05

@nidup It's already possible to control using only the keyboard (with the exception of the opening menu screens) with the arrow keys, M, K, and space. We wanted to make it possible to play using only the mouse also, but didn't have time to implement that feature. Thank you for playing our game!

clue 2018-04-25 00:07

@Eudes Franco You can play using only the keyboard arrow keys, M, K, and space (and this is probably the smoothest experience). We were unable to implement a mouse-only control scheme in time.

monstermanmfr 2018-04-25 04:36

I love this game! It's a lot of fun and I really like how you implemented the tutorial in the Single Player game.

nardandas 2018-04-25 05:47

I really liked the concept, and I found it incredibly smooth to play using keyboard. I also got stuck on the 6th level, however. I enjoy these kinds of puzzle games and would love to see that fixed so I can play more!

jcmonkey 2018-04-25 07:08

nice fun game you have here, im glad to see alot of sports games this ludum dare. nice job!!

albuquerque 2018-04-25 07:10

I really like the turn based mechanics. The programming was on point. Good job!

kindred 2018-04-25 07:12

Wow I wasn't expecting to be stumped so quick in single player. Really fun little game. I might have to play this with my brother tomorrow. Thanks!

goat-toaster-games 2018-04-25 07:15

This is a really great take on the theme and very fun to play! Nice work

lolfrad 2018-04-25 07:24

I only played the single player but I did enjoy the puzzle-like levels. The controls were a bit confusing at first however

aevek 2018-04-25 07:31

This is awesome! I want to play more, I feel like I've scratched the surface of what I could do by combining the mechanics and systems this offers in new and interesting ways. Honestly, I don't think this needs anything added. But if you did add things, I'd love more puzzle-ish single player levels (possibly even a level editor) and online multiplayer at an extreme. None of those things are needed though, this is thoroughly excellent as-is and your team should be proud of what they've made. One of my favorites.

fa 2018-04-25 07:54

The gameplay is interesting, but, unfortunately, I didn't manage to try multiplayer. Controls and UI were confusing. It wasn't obvious how to move and kick (the fact that you need to confirm with the same button) and especially how to end the turn.

nedstormfish 2018-04-25 17:12

Very nice game. Didn't do multiplayer, but single player felt like it showed off everything very well. Played it using only keyboard, and my only gripe with that is using 'X' to cancel. Something closer to M or K would have been better. Top notch stuff.

larryseinfeld 2018-04-26 02:36

Omg, yes! I beat single player mode! I haven't had a chance to experience multiplayer, but god your mechanics and design in single player were enough to completely win me over. Reeeeeally smart, challenging design! And if multi-player matches really do get as complicated as that last level then this just feels like a whole new form of chess. Addictive and great!

Saving this game for later to play with a friend!

gentel 2018-04-28 09:31

Great concept that allows for deep and complex strategic challenges. Fits the theme extremely well, and this is not an easy theme to follow. Love how it works so well in the browser.

I haven't been able to play it in multiplayer but already I can see the possibilities for high-level strategy and I agree with the chess comparisons a lot of people are making. In terms of game design this is a big winner.

Issues:

- Controls were alright but some minor adjustments could make things a whole lot better. For example WASD would make a whole lot more sense than arrow keys seeing as my right hand is already occupied with the M-K keys. Also might want to let us select players with the 1-9 keys or tab through them.

- Apparently other people have beaten the whole single-player mode but I legit don't understand how that's possible. I get 2 kicks, a kick moves the ball 3 squares, and the goal is 7 away from the start point.

flaterectomy 2018-04-28 19:20

A clever concept that could easily be improved to make a very nice game. The pathing of movement felt a little awkward, and with clearer UI options that can be streamlined a lot better. There's definite potential here.

The music is pretty pleasant, but didn't screen *football* at me. There are many improvements that can be done to the art---the clash of green tones between the field and the grass (or carpet?) around it is painful, Y U DO DIZ? :stuck_out_tongue: The character art is quirky, but I see you based it on someone else's tiles so that's a shame.

Please keep working on this one post-jam, I think you have a very valid prototype here!

matt-pattabhi 2018-04-28 20:43

Not a fan of sport games but good job !!

beebo-studios 2018-04-28 20:50

Nice game, nice idea... but the controls need to be a litte more polished. I don't like to change keyboard to mouse and back all the time. But here is a delicious fish for you: 🐟

pogo 2018-04-28 22:33

The game really opens up once you get to the bruisers, kicking around strikers is good tactics. I'm fairly sure I reached the end, because it seemed impossible to complete the level with 3 enemy strikers in the way, and only one turn. The single player plays more like a puzzle game than a tactics game, but I think that works well

lost-dutchman-software 2018-04-28 22:35

This is a fun concept that could easily be polished into a full game. ✌️

clue 2018-04-30 18:24

@GenTel Thank you for the suggestions! It's already possible to tab through the players, but unfortunately itch.io doesn't let us turn off the base page's tab functionality, so it'll only work on the downloadable versions. That level you mentioned makes use of the fact that you can walk a player into the ball to swap their positions, allowing you to get the ball one unit closer to the goal.

clue 2018-04-30 18:25

@pogo In that level, it's possible to push the enemy strikers out of the way and score a goal in a single turn. Remember that you can kick diagonally.

Game: Press Tab to switch between players Me: *presses Tab* Game: *pauses*

I mean, you can select the player you want to move with your cursor easily, but I did find it a bit amusing that the game suggests a control that doesn't even seem to work. I see you addressed that, however. As a whole though, I thought it was a fun little puzzle game. I only tried the single player mode so far, but I thought the challenges were interesting enough. Some were deceptively easy, and they made use of the tactics learned throughout the levels. The tutorial was much appreciated because I was pretty lost on what to do, and the levels were helpful in gradually introducing you to the tactics of the game.

If I had to pick out some issues, I don't really understand why some of the controls are set up the way they are. For example, you have to select M on the player to move the player, and selecting M deselects the player, yet when you use the "Kick" controls with the same player, K on the player again does not deselect the Kick function, and you have to hit Escape instead. It would have been more consistent (and also...nice?) to have K, if already select, deselect the Kick on the player if the key is pressed again - since you only initiate the Kick on the ball, anyway...

Also, the turn system was a little strange in that I could initiate Turn 2 or the last turn with the Space bar and start the game out like that, such that after I make my first move, the game's just like "Oh yeah, you messed up" and then resets me back to the start of the level. I know it's just a matter of pressing the space bar to ensure that you are on the very first turn, but is there any way you could make the turns automatic? I mean, each athlete has a limited number of moves and kicks anyway, so once those are all exhausted, would it not make sense for the next "turn" to immediately commence?

The game's presentation looked fine enough, but it seems like there's some inconsistencies in art styles, what with the almost realistic grassy field on the outer borders (are they playing in a barren field?) with the cute pixel art players to the super opaque soccer ball...they all looked nice, though it did feel like there were lots of different art styles being meshed together in a way that doesn't quite seem...cohesive. Ah well, at least it looked fine as a whole. The music was also very nice - I'm a sucker for the more jazz style game tracks, and it's fitting for a game that's mostly about puzzles and thinking. As Flaterectomy suggests, the music doesn't really sell me as a "sports" theme, so maybe something to keep in mind would be to try and go for a mix of the two? Both puzzle and sports...could be interesting.

I think you had some good mechanics at work here, and the strongest aspect for me was the tutorial on how to play. If there's time, I might try to go for the multiplayer mode.

PS Mad props for making a game that saves progress.

diptoman 2018-05-14 02:28

This is pretty awesome. I really like the genre mashup here, and it works well. The main thing holding it down though are the controls - what should've been a mostly mouse-controleld game with visual cues is keyboard-controlled (understandable perhaps, that you didn't have time and keyboard-control takes less time to implement than adding UI for all of that). But props for the effort - I enjoyed it.

What are some must-know football tactics and strategies?

2023-02-01 20:28

If you are well versed in all the rules, tactics and strategies of the football game, then you can succeed in betting and earn a lot of money. I say this based on my wholesale, because betting helps me to have a great additional income. If you don't know [how to bet on soccer](https://footwagers.com/) yet, then this site will help you a lot.
