@almost thanks for that! fixed

almost 2017-12-04 07:24

Ok, it works now :) Z didn't seem to do anything, but X worked fine.

My highscore so far is 3. Collecting hats is a very noble cause, and it feels good to jump on people and steal their hat. I like the way the tower of hats sways as you move.

simonthecase 2017-12-04 07:59

Fun game. Got a score of 33. Nicely polished.

william-bundy 2017-12-04 10:32

I had some very funny moments when my stack of hats got stuck under the coin box; as a payoff for playing, that was pretty cool. Good pixel art, too

amras0000 2017-12-04 11:41

Super minor gripe, but I'd have liked a 'press A/x to start' prompt at the start. Also the Xbox d-pad is awful and if you could update the game to allow joystick control that'd be great.

I spent more time on this game than I was expecting; really enjoyed it (as usual with your entries) despite the limited scope. I eventually got bored after 276 coins, but that's down to honing in on a slightly exploit-y strategy.

When I started the game, I tried jumping between the enemies and collecting their hats. But I soon found that, with my decreased movement speed, I'd tend to lose my stack to enemies dropping down from the ceiling, a bit too quickly for me to anticipate them. However, if I stood right under the coin box, no enemy would drop on me. AND I'd have instant feedback when my stack got tall enough. So I stood under the coin box, and limited my inputs to the jump button. I could even hold A in mid-air to hover long enough for an enemy to walk underneath me. Some hats flew off to the side, yes, but I could reliably catch enough to keep myself alive and reach the coin box.

With this strategy, there was a key number of hats where I could wedge myself between the enemies below and the coin box up top, and generate huge amounts of coins. This only lasted for a second or two before I'd collect a hat, become too tall to jump, and lose the stack. But the noise and the numbers increasing were the most satisfying thing, and I kept coming back for more of that experience.

I was a bit disappointed at first that there wasn't any music, but the weird atonal sound effects made a really atmospheric tune of their own. The entire game added up to a compelling ambiance which I'm not sure I can describe.

All in all, great work. Glad to see you back after the LD hiatus, hope to see more awesome games from you in the future.

This is pretty fun and the retro art style is spot on. The SFX is really harsh on my ears especially when the hats are grinding against the question block. Some form of escalation to make it a little more difficult over time would be cool, as the more hats you have it doesn't really make it "worse". A combo system which rewards you for bopping enemies consecutively would be cool.

orcdraco 2017-12-04 17:02

Nice game and cute pixel art style graphics! Well done! :)

bumibomber 2017-12-05 15:04

Nice game, though lack of high score system and lac of actual challenge till you want to die cause there's no difficulty kinda holds it back. Graphics are great, sound effects are meaty if not too loud. Gameplay is repetitive and too easy in my opinon. Overall I really liked it though!

trasevol-dog 2017-12-05 22:28

It feels a bit unfinished which is really a shame because it also feels it has real potential to be super fun! As it is though, progression is my main issue, it just doesn't feel like there is any. At some point a faster enemy appears but that's it, maybe all enemies could go faster the more coins you have? Also, you can pretty much live indefinitely by keeping a few hats stored on the side shelves. Overall, it's a very neat entry (I mean, who doesn't love collecting hats??) but severely lacks some challenge to make it more fun in my opinion. Oh and I love the title! :D

bocodillo 2017-12-05 23:35

Very fun game, albeit lacking in some sort of distinct progression. While enemies do seem to get faster as time goes on without a timer or coin goal the game feels a bit lacking. That said the controls are spot on, the graphics are great and the sounds effects are very good. What amount of game that is here is wonderful.

4kbshort 2017-12-06 01:11

I played this game for minutes. Was also cursing a lot when I lost my hats (in a good way). Super smooth, cute graphics, sounds are perfect, was funny and fun. Excellent work!

glintgames 2017-12-06 02:18

I love the pixel art style. the design is really nice and innovative. It nails both the retro feels of nostalgia with a modern indie game twist. I think I'd prefer it in 60 fps but I'm nitpicking. It's my favorite game of ldjam40 so far. Didn't overscope or feature creep. This is Quality over Quantity, overall a beautifully designed perfect jam game! 5/5 stars an inspiration. Hats off to you sir bitslap!

gumboot 2017-12-06 02:38

This is pretty addicting.. keep thinking I just need to try one more time to get that higher score. The art is really nice, and the hat tower is done really well, I like the fact that you put effort into including lots of different hats and palettes, makes it feel fresh. Sometimes I would get disappointed because it seemed that I could never keep my hat tower for very long, but maybe I just need to get better haha.

nucleose 2017-12-06 04:10

Good work; made me play for a good bit which tells me that the worst thing about it is that I want more! The feedback is well done and makes for some strong base gameplay. The most important part of a game like this is to make sure it feels good to play and you nailed that!

sleepystrix 2017-12-06 05:20

Feels really nice, especially when you get a good chain of bouncing between an enemy and the ? box. The graphics, audio, and feedback remind me a lot like Downwell. What it really needs next is music.

voxel 2017-12-06 06:55

I got a hat

dawik9000 2017-12-06 16:41

Dont really get how the theme is in the game, in fact its opposite, the more the better. Other than that cool game and love the art!

wowa 2017-12-06 16:59

OK! This game is PURE AWESOMENESS! :D Can't stop playing it!

bitslap 2017-12-06 16:59

@dawik9000 You get slower the more hats you have.

szekeres-szabolcs 2017-12-06 18:42

Good game. Good job

ithildin 2017-12-06 19:18

The concept is absurdly simple, but it works terrific, I got completely hooked (it reminded me a bit of the Goomba stacks in Super Mario Odyssey). Also, great level of polish. It feels like an old-school game.

I loved the retro graphic style. The sounds were fitting, although the lack of music caused them to feel a bit grating at times. The B key didn't do anything on my laptop as noted on the instructions, but X and Space did, so it was okay.

I've only managed to score 11 after playing for quite a while >_< I. MUST. KEEP. COLLECTING. HATS.

Now seriously, this has been one of the best entries I've played so far. Congrats on the great job!!

ghostlygurustudios 2017-12-07 01:51

ha! i actually had a similar idea about doing a game with a guy with too many hats on his head.. but went a more boring route. unfortunately the game keeps crashing on me over and over.. but did get to play a decent amount.. maybe cause of gamepad?

paulhocker 2017-12-07 04:16

this game kept me playing for a long time - which is a good thing - my only complaint is the d-pad - awesome game

bitslap 2017-12-07 05:38

@ghostlygurustudios Do you get any errors while crashing?

krassenstein 2017-12-07 12:01

Pretty fun game. I do wish there was another mechanic that increased the replayability of the game, because as soon as you figure out how to get dat coin, you've completed the game and it just becomes a high-score game.

Great job!

honest-dan 2017-12-07 12:07

I enjoyed the game, took a bit to get used to. I liked the graphics style and the retro changing colour palette for different attempts. I'd question the theme though, as it seems the more hats you have the better it is - as you can reach the coins. Fun little game witha good level of difficulty.

nokusu 2017-12-07 20:29

simple title but it's really fun as soon as you start, and the coin sound when you combo the block is quite satisfying ^^ i liked the 8bit style of the graphics, and the tiny sprites fit well for a game like this you can just play on the go.

I didn't have any issues with the game however i had some with 1 small technical detail, it would have been great to be able to play the game in a window.

But other than that it's a neat game and it was fun stacking those hats up, so well done ^^

squabbler 2017-12-08 02:07

Man, where to start.. This game is so good. It is very well polished, and you're animations and controls are fantastic. VERY well done!

dietzribi 2017-12-08 15:22

Really cool, I wish there was music. This could work really well on mobile! Congrats

oxysoft 2017-12-09 02:22

quite addictive, simple yet effective design. Very lazy with the sound effects I must say however, no identity whatsoever. There was bad contrast a lot of the time too, making it hard to see where I was and what I was doing.

jasperarmstrong 2017-12-09 02:36

Addictive, fun little game. Wedging yourself between the block and an enemy underneath was very satisfying. I really enjoyed the art, but having some music would've added a lot. I kind of wish there was some other way to die in the game, it was a bit too easy to stay alive. Overall cool game!

knarf 2017-12-18 09:54

Cool and fun simple arcade game, it's very hectic and fast paced once you can reach the box ; I tried some different strategies but the best one seems to be to stay at the centre as much as possible and be sharp when jumping on baddies, and let some hats aside in case you get touched. That's a great thing to build strategies for a gameplay that seems simple at first sight :p I'd loved to play a tate mode game, very smooth gamefeel with nice blood particles, screenshakes, simple yet "alive" sprites good looking use of colors to make a coherent design, as always with your games. I scored something like 80 before RQ :) Good job !

ddrkirbyisq 2017-12-18 17:46

So simple, yet so fun.

okk 2017-12-18 18:28

So many cruelty in this game, BUT I LIKED IT! Very funny visual stile and gameplay)

franklins-ghost 2017-12-20 12:31

Fun unique concept perfectly executed. Enjoyed the arcade vibe to this one with how simple it was but how much fun it was to play and try and see how far along you could get. The different hat variety was also a nice touch.

commanderstitch 2017-12-21 00:15

I loved this. I stuck to it and got to like 52 or something. :D

2017-12-27 16:40

Fun, well made little game! I included it in my Ludum Dare 40 compilation video series, if you’d like to take a look. :) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JWC1pkAxfVs

simon-stalhandske 2017-12-27 21:25

ok, so this was definitely the best LD game I played this time around (so far, and I've played a few). Other than the game being well made and polished and all that, it also had me playing for a long time. Partly because main mechanic was fun and felt good, partly because I kept discovering new intricacies in the gameplay, but I think the most important thing was that it was very hard to lose. I tend to stop playing games when I lose a couple of times, but having the Sonic-esque health, where you just have to wear a hat to survive, worked really well in keeping me playing for a long time. Really awesome. Another cool thing was that I felt I got better with time. A jam game where I feel like I'm making meaningful progression of skill is super rare in my experience.

Didn't like the floaty air controls though. Only complaint.

hiyek 2017-12-28 11:22

I can't believe I haven't rated this yet! I played a LOT of your game before my cross-country move and I really enjoyed the concept a lot! I remember I would keep getting frustrated when I ran into an enemy whose head I had already bonked :P

My only issue I recall having was that the controller inputs don't work as well as mouse and keyboard. There's a lot of latency and missed inputs when using a d-pad.

Overall, great idea and clean, tight execution with the whole package (graphics, audio, ui, game feel) :D I had a lot of fun with this one and will keep this gem on my hard drive for many years to come!
