Cool Hat Mr. Hat by bitslap 2017-12-28T11:22:01Z

I can't believe I haven't rated this yet! I played a LOT of your game before my cross-country move and I really enjoyed the concept a lot! I remember I would keep getting frustrated when I ran into an enemy whose head I had already bonked :P

My only issue I recall having was that the controller inputs don't work as well as mouse and keyboard. There's a lot of latency and missed inputs when using a d-pad.

Overall, great idea and clean, tight execution with the whole package (graphics, audio, ui, game feel) :D I had a lot of fun with this one and will keep this gem on my hard drive for many years to come!

Ayy I'm glad I followed you! This looks AWESOME! Heading in to play after I make some food :)

Spacelitch by Flaterectomy 2017-12-06T10:16:02Z

This is the first game I've given 5 stars in all categories and here's why:

First of all, the visuals were nothing short of spectacular! I especially loved the detail and creativity that flourished in the character portraits and the little camera pan was a very nice touch for game feel. I also enjoyed the crescents parallax scrolling over the background; very retro! The shots were well-communicated as well, with their colors being green for friendly and red for hazardous. A small, but very necessary detail for the overall concept to work.

The writing was great! I really loved the fact that you get to play a dog (and one named Mr. Woofberg at that LOL! ARF!) — the idea that the Flight Control Leader was completely oblivious to who's actually piloting the ship cracked me up! "Are you coming down with a cold? You sound a little off." (an old gag, but a good one :D)

Sometimes dialogue would trigger after I had already died, but I didn'tsreally find this to be that bothersome of an issue.

This game was actually pretty difficult to get used to at first, with bullets bouncing every which way, but it was a very fun challenge, that ultimately felt rewarding once mastered (as truly good games do IMO). The boss was quite a crazy experience too, and the fight actually felt epic; great job!

SpaceLitch.png

I also loved the tunes in this! In particular, the main one that cues at the first piece of dialogue, after the intro, was fantastic! That kick drum had a real groove and had a nice relationship w/ the snare that captured the militant space-action mood perfectly! I even paused on a dialogue box just to jam out to it! The boss music was very fitting and awesome too; it really captured the intensity of the situation at hand. I'm actually still listening to the ending/intro tune on loop while writing this ;)

The level design was VERY well thought-out. Like.. sheer perfection. It had amazing pacing and was ultimately fair; leaving the game up to the player's own skill and resourcefulness. Nuff said.

Overall, this was an utterly fantastic concept, and a great take on the theme. This was the most fun I've had playing a space shooter since my favorite arcade game of all-time: Galaga.

I want to see more!! This game was wonderful and I would definitely pay for a retail release. You guys are all true professionals. You should be proud <3

If I can think of anything that I may have left out, I will edit this comment with revisions. Cheers!

Life & Debt: A Real Life Simulator by Krassenstein 2017-12-28T13:57:34Z

**For starters:**

The title screen and music were great, I watched the furniture fall for a good five minutes thinking the effect was pretty trippy (also could be that cookie I ate a little bit ago..)

**Teensy little gripe:**

One minor visual bug was that there were black lines on the wall when changing walking direction

**Stuff I would add for polish:** *(based off the 0.0.1 version)*

- Would've been nice to maybe have a tooltip that tells you what each piece of furniture is when you hover over it (especially since there are many identical cabinets with different names) - A way to sell back anything you don't want would be great - Paying off a bill all at once (even though it doesn't matter with all the life event RNG. NEVER FINANCE ANYTHING heh) - Maybe an option to mute music (since I was hoping to run an experiment by just afk'ing a new playthrough for a bit while I played some other LD submissions :P)

**The Meat:**

I think you guys did a fantastic job on this game! The pixel art is well done (even potato blob man's animations are decent!) and I found myself thoroughly enjoying the tune that loops in the background; I know it by heart after my lengthy playthrough!

I just kept pacing my slowly-growing abode, waiting for each paycheck from my mysterious benefactors and resisting the urge to beat the crap outta the little shit who keeps using my card for in-app purchases!! I found a lot of humor in the little life events *(who knew NOT going to school puts you in debt, I thought it was the other way around!)* :B

As I fought an uphill battle against the RNG Gods and fell deeper into debt, I began to appreciate the things I had already purchased. This appreciation began to run deeper than my longing for a completely furnished apartment, and it was in this moment that the game's message truly shined (I guess that lava lamp and soda can will hang there, floating forever)!

unwinnable.png unwinnable2.png

Two in a row followed by the lack of education $40k debt... I'm calling it. Time to rack up -$1m.

debtcity.png

Overall, such a wonderfully fresh take on the theme! Plus this game teaches some valuable life lessons (e.g. "the value of a dollar"), which you don't see too often in games!

Some things to take away from this joyfully grueling experience: Don't finance things you can't afford in the short term!! ** ALWAYS LIVE BELOW YOUR MEANS ** by only buying the things you truly need and can afford up-front; if you truly desire a *want* badly enough, then you must be patient as you work towards that goal!

FYI If I ever have kids, I'm 100% going to make them play this when it comes time to teach about fiscal responsibility lmao

Sorry for the slapdash review, I just got internet installed tonight after completing my cross-country move and I'm trying to get through as many games as possible before the window closes!

Mushroom Délicieux by TRASEVOL_DOG 2017-12-05T04:16:38Z

That was awesome!! The effects were a bit too much for me, so I could only play for a little bit, but I made it to level 4! :P I'm so astounded by everyone's amazing work they accomplished this weekend!! Great job <3

Loot Drop by Snowdrama 2017-12-06T08:59:56Z

LootDropFinish.png

First off, I enjoyed this tense, physics-based brain-teaser. I felt smart when I completed puzzles, although it definitely took me quite a few tries (more on this in a moment), it was an innovative take on the theme with a couple of catchy tunes! I laughed on the first level that introduced the pullies, because I kicked the box onto the ground floor without realizing it, and couldn't for the life of me figure out how to complete the damn thing :P

That being said, there were a couple of bugs that completely made this experience frustrating as all hell, and throughout, I just couldn't wait to finish and set the game down because of them.

-This first bug wasn't a problem, but I thought I should mention that the start button for controllers doesn't seem to work. Had to hit Esc on my keyboard anytime I needed to retry a level. Again, not really bothersome, so I wouldn't worry about it.

-These next two absolutely SUCKED though. One was that some of the items would fall through the floor to the bottom level or get kicked and stuck inside ramps/stairs which made the levels impossible to complete.

-The other one was that sometimes the weight I was carrying wouldn't register at all and the ladder wouldn't let me through. To get rid of this, I would introduce some sort of fail-safe that checks against the weight (like which items are on the character/left in the level or something similar), but these bugs are understandable given the time constraints.

-One of your walls is invisible and you can walk right through it :P I don't think it's game-breaking necessarily, although I did use it on my victory run, I can't remember if it helped. SPOILER: It's the one wall on a platform by the ladder that requires a green key to get through, the other side of the wall needs a blue key and IIRC there's a blender monkey head on that platform. If you keep walking past the monkey head you can just walk right through the wall. ^-^

All in all, I think you did a fantastic job on this, given the time constraints! It's a really good idea for a race against the clock puzzle game because a lot of the time, the only person to blame is yourself for failing the puzzles (I just hated the times where the game cheated me), and with a little tweaking, I'd say you have a really awesome game here! You did a heck of a lot better than anything I could've ever come up with over the course of a weekend, so please don't take my criticisms to heart; I really do believe this could be so wonderful with a little bug squashing, as I truly adore the concept. Cheers!

Potion Commotion by boaheck-artgent 2017-12-28T11:07:24Z

Enjoyed the cute graphics! Good job completing your submission! Would've been nice if the frog enemies could at least push the player to add a little more difficulty. I honestly didn't see the theme here, unless it's that each gem you get, the harder the next course is (I personally thought the first course was the most difficult lmao) All-in-all, nice! :)

Lights, Camera, Action! by gamesplusjames 2017-12-28T22:41:56Z

Hey James! I feel so bad that I didn't get to rate/review your game in time! I just got in from my move to LA and got internet just moments ago! I did get to play though and I had a lot of fun, even though I didn't get to hear my line on any of my playthroughs lol. The graphics were great and I enjoyed the old-school audio sounds. Would've been nice to hear some background music, maybe we can team up for the next jam instead of Compo and I could make some nice melodies and soundscapes for you! A couple notes are that the score screen seems to take forever to tally up, maybe increase the speed of the counter (eh, but who cares; after this box office hit, I'm rich! >;D) and also maybe making the enemies a little more responsive would've been nice and would've made for a good challenge. All-in-all, this game would've gotten 5/5 humor from me just because the one-liners are so great and your take on the theme also deserves a 5/5!

Dog-Off! by BrothersT 2017-12-06T11:45:43Z

This game is so damn addicting! I wasn't about to review it until I hit top 10 so thanks for making it truly competitive, and I finally get to live out my dreams of being a competitive eating champion hahaha

Honestly though, the art-style, music, sound effects, intuitive controls that are easy to learn yet challenging enough that they can trip you up when the prompts are hitting you one after the other, the people in the crowd, it's all amazing fun and even humorous! I will definitely be keeping this and playing it for years to come! I wanna hit #1 baby!!

My arms are exhausted too lol! For my placing run, I felt like I was playing Starcraft!!

Thank you for this gem of utter creativity <3

10/10 This is only the second game that I've given 5 stars across the board. It truly deserves it!

dogoffleaderboard.png

Edit: Oh and bonus points for including a tutorial :)

& my ONLY gripe with the entire game was when Dizzy came after Meat Sweats, as there's a super good chance you're gonna fail it, but learning this, I would pay extra special attention to this detail and only tap daintily on any Meat Sweats prompt that came before Dizzy! :O Strategy!

Edit2: @kromeboy is 100% right; this would be an awesome party game to play with friends; both online, and locally with controller support (using face buttons for the hotdog arm and the d-pad for the other arm)

Edit3: I don't think my review communicated effectively just how much I admire the attention to detail in the art. From the title menu, all the way down to the leaderboard. I truly admire and appreciate this game.

Dog-Off! by BrothersT 2017-12-06T16:10:36Z

@BrothersT I try to leave lengthy reviews for every game I play! That's actually my shortest review so far :p I honestly mean every word of it too! You guys did such an astounding job; the whole Thomson clan must be full of talent :3

Edit: Not sure if lengthy was the word I wanted to go for.. I don't really go for a certain length, I just try to be as complete as possible!

Drift Punk by CremaGames 2017-12-06T07:08:10Z

Currently trying to break top 20 cause this game is so addictively entertaining! I love the art style and the controls, albeit a bit touchy, feel really good! The concept is also really fresh and original, given the theme, and I think overall, you did such a fantastic job :D

A couple notes:

-The waypoint navigation arrow feels a bit sudden, so I'm constantly missing turns and going the long way

-It would be nice if the dropoff zones didn't only detect the leading car, so we could kinda fishtail one of the back cars into it and keep going. I believe this change would help the pacing a lot if you plan on developing the game further

-I ran into a really pretty bug where I fell through the map and got to see this whole purple space with green streaks of light in the background lol. I think I might be able to repro if you want, but it's honestly fairly hard to put into words:

DriftPunkBug.png

I love this game though, 10/10!

Edit: I especially loved that bug because purple & green is my favorite color combination! <3 Oh, and don't mind my girlfriend there in the screen-cap reading Goblet of Fire :P I hope she doesn't mind lol

Edit2: Just ran into another moment where I was sitting right in front of the dropoff zone and the nav arrow was pointing the opposite direction, but I didn't have time to screen cap it :P Another note would be to enable an option to restart (hitting the back/select button on controller or esc on keyboard), that way you wouldn't need to give us a pause menu — which would be super exploitable in a game like this!

Edit3: Last one I promise! Just noticed that a lot of cars keep randomly disappearing! This actually worked in my favor, but I doubt this was intended as a feature ;)

Edit4: I lied :p Just broke into Top 10! (#9) Having so many cars felt like both a dream and a nightmare haha! Might've done better had I not stopped to take a screenie

DriftPunkFun.png DriftPunkScore.png

I have plenty more LD games on my playlist, but so far, this one takes the cake for me! I can't wait to come back to it; definitely a gem on my hard drive I will cherish for years to come!

Edit5: Now that I think of it, I felt super relieved every time a car would disappear in front of me, so maybe keeping it would be fine and a good way to keep the game optimized and from getting too tense to the point it isn't fun. This game seems like it was inspired by Crazy Taxi and I could feel the waves of nostalgia rush over me while playing it. Again, fantastic job! K bye now.

Drift Punk by CremaGames 2017-12-06T14:40:20Z

Up'd my rating a bit cause there's something about this game that keeps me coming back for more! I suppose it's trying to raise my ranking a bit more and being astounded by the fact that the top score is 911 O.o

I truly believe this game would do well on Steam :3

VIRAL ARENA by EnchaeC 2017-12-05T04:08:05Z

This was so amazingly fun and super addicting!! The fact that you did it in a weekend is astounding!! I got to 60 mutation before I failed lol but yeah amazing job this is definitely a winner!

Hyper diapers by Gaziter 2017-12-28T11:40:42Z

This game is a refreshingly original take on the theme! The graphics were really cute (especially the oven babies lol) and the gameplay felt super frantic! I lost my first babe at 21 and made it to 31, and each one of those baby's deaths I could feel in my heart -_- 10/10

Hiyek's Ludum Dare 40 Submission - Swami Shooter PT by Hiyek 2017-12-05T01:45:39Z

Thank you very much! :D That means a lot to me!

Does this count as a submission? Did I put it in the right place?

Hiyek's Ludum Dare 40 Submission - Swami Shooter PT by Hiyek 2017-12-05T04:57:19Z

Thank you! Yeah I didn't manage sleep and priorities very well, but I will definitely be working on updating the level/animations/UI for this within this next week or so! As well as fixing the enemy health/strength code

Hiyek's Ludum Dare 40 Submission - Swami Shooter PT by Hiyek 2017-12-05T22:24:43Z

@Flaterectomy Thank you for the very objective criticism! You're correct in the art asset assumptions, and yeah there was no audio and I just realized I could opt out of stuff, so good catch! I just woke up after passing out last night before getting to play your game! I have a ton of tabs open of different games and everyone here in the comments' games are in those tabs, so I look forward to playing all of them over the course of the evening! :D

My main concern was just getting something out there for my first jam, so in that regard, I'm proud of myself for accomplishing that goal as well as getting music done for the other group in the last 3 hours of LD! O.o However, quality-wise I know I can do much better, and this weekend was just a good jump off point to get started on development (hence, naming it "PT") ;D

Edit: I actually already played @EnchaeC 's game, Viral Arena, and you guys should give it a go! It's one of my favorites of the few games I've tried! <3

Edit2: Oh and the extra spawner up top was added for a wee little bit extra element of strategy. The circling around stops working after a while because the red squares on the street will keep adding up to a wall of death with enough negative thought RNG. So if you don't take care of the ones up top, and need a new escape route, they become a sort-of feeding pit :P

My Greedy Dog Steve by Honest Dan 2017-12-28T12:26:30Z

I'm kinda cheating in my review because I'm playing the post-jam-polish version, but I made it to LA, got my stuff unpacked, internet setup today, and I wanted to review/rate at least all of my friends' submissions before the end of the window. So here goes nothing, Kegan, Protector of the Orange Soda's review of My Greedy Dog Steve:

Immediately off-the-bat, I really enjoy the addition of an icon/splash screen and the title screen was cute (the instructions were very clear as well, and I dig the chill tune!)

I think the movement felt really nice and the addition of an equipment inventory was a great touch. I'm amazed by how much you guys got done given the time constraints (your talent for design definitely showed in the details (e.g. the arrow around steve's portrait, pointing the player back home)! Shout out to Dan's brother for the art too, looks awesome! I'm sure others have said this, but it slightly reminds me of Don't Starve. Oh, and cool water.

I only had a teensy gripe in that the knockback from the bear enemies felt like a little too much, but oh well :P

Speaking of enemies, the variety and designs were cool! I liked the ghosties, and defeating the big bear made me feel like a champ!

Overall, this is a fantastic take on the theme and quite an original, relaxing experience! The punishing level ups really put pressure on me get Steve fed before the timer ran out, and I had a lot of fun doing so, especially when reading the humorous "BUTTERFINGERS" floating text when the meat would dodge me (not to mention the ending of the game, but I won't spoil it for anyone)!

bigolsteve.png

Awesome job guys! :) The credit sequence was sweet and I'm honored to have been included in it <3

Late Night Chef by DosWosh 2017-12-11T04:53:18Z

Okay, I didn't totally make it through this game, but I'm gonna leave the Overtime Shift for later so I have something to look forward to! This game was purely awesome: unique idea, fit the theme in an outside-the-box way, and the game overall felt complete.

Edit: I don't want to say much about the artistic stuff (graphics/audio) because, for an LD Jam game, you nailed this stuff and hit it out of the park in regards to overall mood and execution of your concept. 5/5

That being said, I think this game could go on to be monetarily successful with a few tweaks to gameplay:

- The girl who comes in at shift 3 is tough enough to deal with timing her leaving while also listening for the inspector, without her also stealing your currently plated food, so with this clearing your plate mechanic, the game becomes too RNG-based. While this does add difficulty, it feels unfair and will leave most players with a bad taste in their mouth, feeling cheated.

- What the phone actually does, besides adding an extra task to take care of, isn't communicated very effectively, and I'm led to believe that one could completely ignore it with not much difference made to the player's experience

- A minor issue I had was with the audio of the coffee maker. It would've been nice to hear that awesome brewing sound you hear (when you hold it and look away), while you're looking at it, rather than this awful buzzing loop you hear; it often clashes with the phone audio.

- The menu instructions have a lot of spelling/grammatical errors, which, along with these other areas of improvement, are understandable due to the time constraints and pressure of Ludum Dare.

I can understand how these things can come about when you're working hard against the clock, and last-minute playtesting was pretty evident here.

I truly hope you continue to work at this because the game has an incredible mood and a great amount of tension that even left me with chills down my spine when I first picked it up! The idea is absolutely genius that one could be scared/startled while ***COOKING*** & I love that haha <3 I adore the concept 110% and think it's one of the more freshly innovative games I've come across, not just during LD40, but over this course of this entire year in the indie scene. Fantastic job! 9.5/10

Caffeinated Alien by Justin Toyo 2017-12-05T04:55:14Z

Love the concept! Bout to head in and play after I make some food :D

Caffeinated Alien by Justin Toyo 2017-12-28T11:17:35Z

Got to finally try your game! (Sorry I just had a cross-country move and finally got everything set up and new internet :D)

I enjoyed playing this a lot, my one gripe I had was that I walked into a tree and died randomly lmao

EDIT*: Your title screen was awesome by the way :) & Sorry for the short review, I have so many games to blast through before play/rate window ends

The Blacksmith by darefus 2017-12-11T03:53:02Z

Can't get this game to work. Won't rate until it does. Will revise this comment once fixed (upon attempting to open the game, I hear the opening jingle and can hear swinging when I click, but it's a black screen every time for a few seconds before crashing entirely)

Concept looks interesting, hope you get this fixed!
