LD38 — A Small World

Near kingdoms by Hadik 2017-05-02T07:32:06Z

Hey, this is fun. The balance between resource gathering and battle is really neat. A few notes

- At first it wasn't obvious what was going on, in particular how much gold I'm getting automatically etc. - The health of units is hidden, which is fine, but its not clear exactly how it works. I spent a long time thinking that the horseman would beat the infantry every time, but that doesn't seem to be the case - Would be great to see some progression, maybe powerups like catapults that attack the castle directly, or drop bombs - The sound is not finished - There is an issue with the buttons sometimes registering twice: eg when i choose a unit it will deploy, and then display 'not enough gold' as though I'd tried to buy a 2nd unit. Check your button code/mousedown events I suppose

Overall really good! Great look and deep concept GOOD JOB

SLINGSHOOT by chaoclypse 2017-05-01T12:15:10Z

This is great. As everyone has said, the presentation and graphics are great, but it's probably a little on the easy side.

Speaking strategically, it's far easier to manipulate the enemy ai and/or just dodge and let them take one another out. There are a couple of things you could do to alleviate this: 1) Give the player some other goal, like a large thing to destroy, so that they absolutely MUST use the gravity mechanic. 2) make the gravity alittle weaker with a larger range. In its current state it's pretty hard to control.

Anyhow great stuff. good controls and awesome presentation! :D

Small World Resort Manager by udo 2017-05-03T02:37:24Z

Hi, this was fun! Great clean interface and almost no bugs, very polished, pretty addictive.

A few notes: - I was able to screw myself by immediately buying a hotel for 10m and not making any money (i tohught the first 2 options were blanked out). Maybe change the starting money to 9m to prevent this? - It wasn't obvious how to get started and/or what was giving me money. However once I got the hang of it all is well. - Great look, and the population's ai seems to work well. - Sometimes the words in the speech bubbles were hard to read (seems like an issue with fonts/scaling). I also thought that 'rest' meant they want a hotel to rest...but then decided it means 'restaurant'? Which is it? - It seemed to me like it was a bit unbalanced: once you get a nightclub your money just goes crazy and i spammed nightclubs and became a billionaire real quick. But that might be the point. There were no consequences (as far as I could tell) to unhappy travellers, some of them would leave I suppose, but my nightclub spam did a good job. - On my first game research went fine, but i replayed and it wasn't working.

Overall a great entry. Really simple intuitive interface and the systems all seem to work as intended :D GOOD JOB

A Week's Passing by iseeicy 2017-05-17T02:44:33Z

Hi!

This is nice, has a lot of promise. Some notes: - The camera is too low (about waist high). This put me off though I did get used to it. - The concept is great, but in practice I think it ended up a little slow, and I found myself getting impatient. The loads are a bit long and the bus takes forever to arrive. - Graphics are great, probably polygonal (low-poly) characters would be better though, just a question of taste - The routine mechanic is excellent, especially when you play with changes to the routine. However it did end up getting a bit boring and repetitive. - Doing things quickly messes up the messaging system. - Story was good, if a little cliche

Overall a very GOOD JOB :D not a lot of stories in jam games. try mine if you like, https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/38/a-couple-of-questions-volume-ii-small-business-small-world

All The Way Down by luthwyhn 2017-05-20T01:12:05Z

Hey! Hopefully my rating gets in in time.

This game is a lot of fun! I very much like the control scheme, and the way that the autoscroll and the controls intersect.

- Obviously, it lacks a bit of polish; - The difficulty seems to curve quite well! - I would suggest showing me SOONER how to get points, either in an instruction, or by having a prey animal spawn early on.

Good job! :D

Ronut by toestee 2017-05-01T11:57:35Z

Hey! This game was fun. Great job

Some notes. First the good: - Great Basic controls. Fast and simple, all very good. - Great mechanic to make me shoot then melee. Is there more that I cna do by riding the worms? - Music is nice. Good graphics. - Worm enemies are really well done. - the comic book interface/presentation of the intro is AMAZEING love it

The bad/needs work: - The camera moves a little too much I think. I like that you're trying to follow the worms up and down, but it got a bit crazy. - It's a little aimless. I don't see a score. Or am I failing to kill the worms? Its not obvious to me exactly what happens when i cut them into pieces, it seems to have no long term effect. - The jump sound plays even when i am out of jumps. - Some feedback for damage owuld help me out i think

Overall a great job :)

You Are World. by amras0000 2017-05-02T13:28:49Z

Hey! This is a great idea. Great mood and definitely has the seed of something really interesting, amazing job in 48h.

Some notes: - The movement is very slow, especially because for me 'god' spawned all the way back behind me. maybe we can speed up as we gain strength? Not sure, it might ruin the mood. - The idea of building a worl on your back is AWESOME, but it didnt really pay off: i didn't feel like it mattered at all what kind of world I built. I can deifinitely see some fun strategy to be had there with the construction though. - Music was good, and fit the mood vey well. Loop point is very obvious though - It took me a while to figure out what's going on.

Overall a really strong entry. Great mood, great visuals especially. :D GOOD JOB

Time Loop by wellingtonbecker 2017-05-17T01:43:15Z

Great concept.

- Masking a time limit within the zoom mechanic is inspired. It adds a great tension when you can't see what you're doing - Good music, loops too quickly though I think - Nice and simple concept. Good that you didn't try too much extra stuff and kept it pure. - Controls need a bit of work. In a game like this I think it's good to have real precision. That includes some forgiveness on ledges, more air control. - Definitiely need to put a boundary on levels to restart after falling. Perhaps a reset button too.

Overall a great one. I got to about level 18. 5 was very frustrating, the rest good stuff.

GOOD JOB

Colorfly by Zelos 2017-05-02T13:41:36Z

Great atmosphere and visuals, but ultimately I wish there was a bit more challenge.

Some notes: - Great visuals, especially the butterfly himself, and some little things like the transition when you SHOOM between bubbles is great. - The gameplay is frankly a bit boring. I found myself more or less just wandering aimlessly until I had what I needed. - Great music and sound. It would be nice if the music and gameplay were synchronised in some sense, this game seems like it would really benefit (especially in the side-scrolling stages). It has potential as a relaxing music-game type.

Overall very polished! Great job in just a couple of days. :)

Small World a Flask by Drag0mir 2017-05-02T02:39:51Z

Really nice concept, but needs more info about what's going on.

What I liked: - The combination of 'tetris style dropping puzzle' with physics is novel and interesting; - The control scheme is good, I like it - The basic idea (from what I can see it is to get as many heavy balls in the flask without breaking it) is very interesting.

Issues: - keycode 2 and 3 are swapped - Not enough info about what is going on. Add some instructions on the itchio page and/or this page I think would help a lot. - Perhaps an issue with the game in terms of how it scales, and how much depth there is. I'm not sure it has a ton of legs - This has almost nothing to do with tetris or Dr Mario, and definitely has nothing in common with Go. u Clickbaited me lol

Overall a good effort, with some sound and a bit of jazz in the presentation this could be a very fun mobile game. You'd need to look at ways to give it a little more variety though.

GOOD JOB

Strangeness by philomory 2017-05-03T03:46:16Z

This is GREATTTTTT i love it. The introduction of a stun system to a turn based synchronisation puzzle is genius. Very very impressive mechanics. Some notes

- In the final level, the enemy in the bottom right can't be identified until it kills you once. Enemies 'looking upwards' will have this problem, I suppose. - Perhaps too much emphasis on red herrings in the puzzle design, but thats a matter of taste. in particular in the first level that has shooting enemies, I was thrown off by the boulder (i see why it was there to show me that it blocks lasers, but it led me to forget all about my rocks to throw...). - I would probably prefer if the controls were 'wasd move, arrows to throw rock' instead of holding shift. But that is a minor point. - There is a lot you can do to add to this. Step counter, different enemies.

My only wish is that there was more :D

Aquarium king election by boorik 2017-05-02T14:34:33Z

Tres cool, love the idea. I died on about 20 and it's a bit slow so I didn't replay, but I really like the concept.

A few notes: - It would be nice if the different animal types had very different controls/movement styles - it's a bit too hard to do things 'properly' and a bit too easy to just wait for everyone to go home to enter the area. maybe a different kind of time limit (say, each fish has 30 seconds to vote) to try to force the player to think strategically would be useful - Great art, love the idea of a aquarium election for some reason.

Good job :)

Aliens vs Rng by Valicitor 2017-05-02T00:54:35Z

Hey! Very polished and funny stuff.

Probably a bit too random for my taste, and unpredictable. This could be very good though if there was something more to do while you wait for messages (like some kind of resource management).

- lots of spelling errors haha. 'intelligence' for example - LOVE the music, really set the mood. - great art and look - it wasn't obvious exactly what the dice does. is it basically just like restarting?!

Awesomejob :D

Stable Orbit by mrspeaker 2017-05-03T02:51:19Z

Great game. Nice challenge and educational. A few notes

- If I reach escape velocity, I fail too quickly. Sometimes it's given me the mean beeps even before it's obvious to me that i'm going too fast. I think you should leeave me to fly away a bit further, so that it's clear to me that I'm dead, before declaring that I'm dead. - The left/right controls could be more sensitive maybe? Not sure - Great art, love it. - as someone mentioned, counting your numberof laps, or fuel use, or time in the air would help give the game a bit more purpose. - maybe at some point add something else to do....collect coins, avoid obstacles, or whatever

Great stuff :D good job. Really enjoyed it.

A Couple of Questions, Volume II: Small Business, Small World by stoogebag 2017-05-01T11:46:37Z

@valicitor: were you playing in the browser? The windows version there is out of date (im updating now), but I don't have any problems on the webGL version... if you can figure out what caused it, I'd love to get it fixed.

@toestee yes i agree :P

A Couple of Questions, Volume II: Small Business, Small World by stoogebag 2017-05-01T16:19:22Z

Hi @valicitor. I have identified and fixed a bug that may have been yours: unfortunately it's impossible to know for sure :( hopefully everything is now working for you. If not, then let me know exactly how it's triggered and i'll get to it.

A Couple of Questions, Volume II: Small Business, Small World by stoogebag 2017-05-02T06:08:38Z

Thanks for the feedback guys. I have fixed a bug that would cause some objects to not be properly destroyed when leaving rooms (eg the mystery door in Brant's office).

A Couple of Questions, Volume II: Small Business, Small World by stoogebag 2017-05-03T03:33:18Z

Thanks everyone for playing and for the feedback!

@smbe19 you are able to click through the dialogue, so if you spam the mouse it might skip before you realise (or it might be a bug, but I can't see it. if you have more detail I'd love to fix it)

@philomory i'm not sure to be honest about the art. with the filters and photoshopping i've done, i consider it a derivative work and so i feel morally ok, but i don't really know. for A), this is a combination of a technical issue and a lack of time, but i more or less agree. B) isn't quite true: some clues you can ask about (for example, you can ask Adriana about her affair). Generally speaking i would have liked to have more responses for clues and people, so that's a valid complaint. There are lots of cases where it would make sense that they should respond, but I ran out of time. C) agree, I will probably add a permanent 'leave conversation' option similar to the notebook option.

A Couple of Questions, Volume II: Small Business, Small World by stoogebag 2017-05-05T00:49:42Z

Hi @howardcs, unfortunately most of the clues have no response since I ddn't have a lot of time.

CLICKING on the clue or person's name during a conversation will ask them about it IF there is a response. Asking about people is more likely to get results than clues. I will add something that says 'there is no answer' or something so that this issue doesn't come up.

Thanks for the feedback :)

Spabullare by Chuck Zelvis 2017-05-02T02:31:50Z

Hey!

Good job. I can definitely tell it's not finished :P but for a 2 day job its good stuff.

Some notes: - It took me a minute to realise I could shoot (i was spamming the mouse button) - My own shooting felt awful and weak and slow. I suspect there will be upgrades to the gun though, in which case making me weak and pathetic to start is fine. - It wasn't obvious what 'level' and 'wave' meant. I got through several waves according to the counter, but it didnt feel like I have 'survived a wave' as there was no kind of break.

The good: - Control is great. Not sure what you are talking about calling it chaotic, i think it's smooth and i feel in total control. Hide the mouse cursor if you can find out how. - The idea of upgrades in a game like this is a good concept.

GOOD JOB <3

I suggest you build for webgl if possible, you will get more players that way. Check out my entry if you have time, https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/38/a-couple-of-questions-volume-ii-small-business-small-world

Planet Rush: Save the Moiks! by FerNandXor 2017-05-01T09:47:41Z

Hi! I thought this game was a lot of fun. Good graphics, interesting gameplay.

There wasn't a lot of progression, mostly due to the limit to your defenses. It would be good to see an escalation of the kind of defense you can build. The birds and dragon didn't seem to do much. A buildup of automated defenses and a clicker-style economy would really suit this.

I liked it :D

A Small World (how original) by lilkrit 2017-05-17T01:22:17Z

This is a nice effort!

The graphics and concept are nice. The idea of tower defense on a curved space is very cool, and rotating the sphere was very satisfying.

- The basic lightning spell is very hard to use. The hitboxes seem a bit small, or tricky. Perhaps giving it a little splash would help, as I found myself unsure at first if it even worked. I really had to spam to hit anything. - The UI is not really clear on what's going on. Reading the tutorial text cleared it up but it would be nice if this was made clearer in game.

Beyond that it's great! you can add more abilities and enemy types, adn I think this can be a really fun little game!

GOOD JOB :D (try my game? https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/38/$18103)

FUEL by KCreanor 2017-05-02T12:53:19Z

Awesome, awesome. Some notes:

- It seems there are really 2 types of levels, and the difficulty really ramps up when you get into the 2nd kind. It starts very easy when you're kind of wandering around to collect the barrels, and then when it gets into the more 'mazelike' speed-levels the difficulty picks up very much. It's also where the game is at its best, there is a great tension between speed and precision. Level 8 is an absolute masterpiece of that balance, well done - The graphics are perfect, they're clean and simple. The background is not great. I hate the font but thats personal taste, it certainly suits the game's style. - The controls are very good. I suspect your are targeting touch, where it would work well. You can game it a little by letting go of the mouse to come to an instant stop: I'd recommend a penatly for that (maybe letting go of the mouse causes the ship to drift), since it can be used to make things a bit easier than I think is intended. - The final level completion screen says 'level 11' not 12.

Overall, wow. Very good game, keep making it. Awesome.

Apologies, that's a bug which is fixed ('leave' will take you back now).

I am still unsure about displaying possible commands, since it could potentially ruin the experience... I will probably add one for emergencies.
