Effugere -- an escape game by dev_zero 2011-08-22T16:48:00
Hey, the game idea/concept was pretty cool, but quick tip when distributing python (source) for Linux adding shebang line to the top of the main file would be nice.

Hey. The game was rather fun but as happened with Devenger I got stuck the same way.
Already the 3rd web-based game that doesn't work for me, must be something wrong with my flash =/
Loved the music tho!
I was using FF 3.6.20 ( seems like I updated to 6 only on my laptop) which should explain a lot.
Runs fine on Chromium so I'll get around rating it.
Same problem for me, SDL and most common addon library's installed.
Only error message I get is: "bash: /home/puffi/Desktop/LD/fred_the_astro_miner_supermaximo93: cannot execute binary file"
The game bugged for me big time, it didn't take my input for ~80% of the time and every now and then the graphics disappeared apart from the background.
Well there isn't a strict order to play the levels, but the top-left level is by far the easiest one and kind of works as "introduction".
And thanks for the comment
Thanks for the comment.
Yeah I should've added some sort of instructions to the game, but hopefully people can figure it out without too much of an effort, as there's relatively few objects in game.
Thank you very much for your nice comments!
I have some plans on improving the game (actually quite major changes), tho I will rewrite the code from scratch as the code is just way too messy to start playing with.
Thank you for your comment.
Yeah one part that I was able to give too little attention due to the time limit was the level design (which ofc makes or breaks puzzle games) which was bit of a shame.
But for the post-compo version I will definitely give level design the time it deserves and requires =)
Thanks for the comments!
@barigorokari: Thats odd, which version (Win/Linux) were you running, were there any error messages in stderr ?
The testing of the Windows version was somewhat limited as I had hard time running it inside VM without 3d acceleration.
Gosh, has been a while. I'm still working on the post-compo version of the game. I pretty much have the design laid down, some code and lots of graphics done, but it has been pretty hectic at work causing me to have only little time and "strenght" to work on this project.
But I promise it'll get done sooner or later!
I loved the light effect and the agonizing atmosphere (and I do mean that in positive way) and the story fit in well with that.
Only negative thing I could come up with was the really small size of the screen .
Thumbs up!
Was unable to get past the title screen. None of the clickboxes (atleast I assume they were clickboxes) worked nor did the window close button. Tried to use KB but nothing happened either =/
Do not know the reason, but all I got was a black web-page when I tried to play the game so can't rate it =/
Liked the graphics, but the game was extremely hard (or I missed something completely).
The game crashed once on me after I died and tried to shut down the game.
Dump here if you want to check it: http://146.255.37.150/puffi/random/hs_err_pid2832.log couldn't reproduce the crash.
Took a while to get used to the control scheme and weapon being unequipped every time it was reloaded.
Nice work none the less!
Gotta agree with the previous comments, the mechanic itself is great, but checkpoints would've been really nice.
Should there be any audio ? Couldn't hear any sounds, but I'm afraid it might be issue with my browser.
Love the graphics (Im a sucker for retro pixely look)!
Really nice mechanics as well, but as previous comments have stated, gets really hard quite fast.
Nice one overall!
The game crashes every time I press any of the options in the main, menu.
Crash dump: http://146.255.37.150/puffi/random/LOT_Linux_crash
Running in Xubuntu 12.04 using OpenJDK
Hey again and thanks, that got the game working!
Liked the "strategic" element that the enemies not being able to jump creates (i.e cheesing them to a helpless corner and shooting them from safe distance).
Nicely done!
The game crashes on me after roughly 10secs of game-play.
Doesen't give much of a error message/dump, but here's what was written to the terminal: http://146.255.37.150/puffi/random/bacteremia_crash.txt
I'm running XUbuntu 12.04 and the crash reproduced 3 times out of 3 tries.
Looks interesting tho :)
Couldn't really play the game (didn't crash or anything like that), but the side bar visible in the screenshot was not visible so I couldn't build any units.
Judging from the screenshot the the Linux version was running with lower resolution (the height seems about the same, but width was much lower) and that cropped some important elements from the screen.
Thanks for the comments everyone, always appreciated!
@Frolacosta in the bank robbery game you have to get the right 3 digit combination for the vault to open. Each correct digit has a higher pitch sound than the incorrect ones, so once you have found the higher pitch sound move to the next digit and repeat.
And I agree that I should've increased the time given for the minigames, but thats quite hard to balance without proper user-testing :)
Hey the game crashes as soon as I launch it.
Error message here: http://146.255.37.150/puffi/random/robot_hunts_crash
I'm running Xubuntu 12.04 with have pygame 1.9.1
Great art, would've loved some ambient ocean sounds in the background (or something like that).
The red fish is damn hard :) got to him 2 times and got totally crushed by it both times.
Love the music!
Couldn't get past the poop demon, quite hard game in general.
(Btw you should be able just dynamically link to OpenAL and distribute the DLL's along with the exe, so people wouldn't have to install it, think some (very) old versions even permitted static linking, not a biggie tho)
Cool game, tough I think the character moved slightly too fast/far from juts a little tap of a key. In general great concept and execution.
Great atmosphere, the generation counter in the background was nice touch. Some ambient sound would've great, but anyway a great execution.
Great game, only thing that sometimes bothered me was that moving vertically became hard once you grew (very) large.
Overall very good
The tile collisions work strangely, couldn't understand how the "sticking" works as sometimes I could go trough the white quads after "attatching" to it, but other times I could not.
Nice concept, gets really hard quite fast.
Neat concept, my best try was 270 points, agree with Xgor that some upbeat music would really set the mood for it.
The game really could've used some set of instructions, took a good while for me to find the shoot button.
I liked the enemy sprite :)
Ability to restart the game after you have died would've been nice too
Crashes on me as soon as I launch it. No real error message, just the basic windows "CraftStudioRuntime has stopped working" message.
OS: Win7 64bit
"You have XNA installed Puffi?"
Oh silly me, some how I assumed I had it and didn't even check :D sorry for that, works fine now!
Hi and thank you very much for all the comments!
@Branch
Maybe you should get OS from this century =) you do realize that there's completely free ones available right?
@DreamThorn
That seems odd, I've got no slightest clue what could've caused that. I've heard that Love2d has some issues with older graphics cards, but why would windows claim its not valid application I don't know =S
@Merkoth
I'm sure you don't the game is just being mean
Thank you very much for the comments
@tankete
"Not a fan of being told that "I suck", especially when I got a whopping 1989. "
Yeah the game is bit mean, there's 5 different responses depending on the score.
<5k - you suck
<10k - such a baddie
<15k - pretty meh
<25k - wuts the big whoop!?
+25k - get a life, srs!
So there really isn't a way to get a nice response :)
@Fritzendugan
"it seemed like after a while the same tiles just kind of repeat"
Yes, there's 4 different (+1 for start) "rooms" (50 tiles wide each) that are randomly picked on the fly to make the map "infinite"
"and the game doesn't speed up or anything"
Actually the character movement does speed up, but it is very subtle. Last LD biggest complaint I got for my game was that it was way too difficult so I tried to keep this one easier :)
"Not really sure what the point of having hearts are because it seemed like everything killed me instantly haha"
The player looses hearts from the red tiles so you can take a few hits from them without dying.
@geckojsc
"maybe it would have been cool to increase the difficulty and variety of challenges that appear as the player travels a further distance?"
This was something I had planned on as one of the things to expand on if the time & motivation would permit, but never got around to it :)
Thank you all for the comments once again, really appreciate them!
