LD24 — Evolution

Tower Evolution by DBRalir 2012-08-28T19:53:00

If anyone gets a "ClassNotFoundException", I really don't know what to do about it. In my experience, this usually means the JAR file did not download or was corrupted. Try checking your firewall or clearing your browser's cache.

Tower Evolution by DBRalir 2012-08-30T00:15:00

My sincerest apologies for the website being horrible, everything should be fixed now.

Tower Evolution by DBRalir 2012-08-30T15:16:00

@darkshadow, it seems you are using an older version of Java. I will see about making my game compatible with 1.6, but I suggest updating.

Simulation by CarbonCoder 2012-08-30T05:15:00

"Unsupported control type: Pan"

Very awesome,

Triple Threat by rylgh 2012-09-01T01:42:00

Sorry for double-comment (submitted on accident), I was going to add +1 for grid-aligned movement.

LD26 — Minimalism

Tower by DBRalir 2013-04-30T02:57:00

Hey guys, sorry about not having a Windows version before, but I just ported it over. Currently there are only 64-bit versions, but 32-bit versions should come soon.

Tower by DBRalir 2013-04-30T03:36:00

We're looking into fixing that Windows error now, although we think that it's an issue with graphics hardware. Also, we're going to include sound in a later version of the game, but didn't have time the first time around.

Tower by DBRalir 2013-05-02T06:07:00

@ahm99: Nice catch! I only update certain flags when the player is moving, so it's an easy fix. Thanks for playing!

Tower by DBRalir 2013-05-03T22:49:00

@intripoon I added configurable controls. Details are in the game description above. Please let me know if it breaks.

Tower by DBRalir 2013-05-04T09:23:00

@burtio I'm afraid I have absolutely no way of testing it on that platform, but the code should be fully portable, so maybe someday I'll see what I can do.

Tower by DBRalir 2013-05-06T03:05:00

@dalbinblue Yeah, our levels were made almost last-minute, though we're working on improving the game a bit.

For the theme, we decided to make a minimal action platformer that could be used for speedruns, but we had to strip a lot out to get it done in time, so that's probably not apparent. Also, all sprites are 8x8 to fit with the theme, and the levels are meant to be "bite-sized".

Tower by DBRalir 2013-05-06T15:00:00

@Maple Bah, I tried to make the shaders (they're so simple) work on any system, but those errors keep popping up. If your graphics card was made in the last 3 or 4 years, I have no idea what's wrong.

If anyone gets a "Shader error" I would love to know what kind of graphics card you have.

Tower by DBRalir 2013-05-06T17:19:00

@Maple OK cool, so the Windows version of Tower should work on any graphics card that was made after August of 2008. 5 years seems like a reasonable compatibility window.

If anyone is insane enough to be running Linux, I'm sure you can figure out how to patch the source code.

The shader basically does nothing at this point, so the graphics might become a bit rough. It should look normal on most systems, though.

Thank you so much for your graphics card info. It was 0.5 years too old for my program to run, but it should work fine now.

(The reason shaders are kinda broken is because I'm testing my custom graphics framework.)

Tower by DBRalir 2013-05-07T10:05:00

@Maple: Perhaps you can redownload and try this last version? This is my first time using shaders, so I've just been dragging my face on the ground for the past few days, trying to get it working on every system. Your graphics card is not the best, but my shader does nothing more than draw unshaded flat polygons, so it's unacceptable for it to not work on any system.

Tower by DBRalir 2013-05-08T05:55:00

@Maple: @SuperlevelSebastian: I believe I have truly, finally fixed the shader problem.

Solution: Remove all the shaders. It was so simple.

The Windows version was compiled and tested in Windows XP on a system with a Core 2 Duo and Intel GMA X3100. It was also tested in Windows 7 on a Phenom II x6 and Radeon HD 5700, and in CrunchBang (Linux+Wine) on an AMD A6, and on three other systems. If it still does not work on your system, there's probably nothing I can do.

Tower by DBRalir 2013-05-08T23:34:00

@dector: Yes, we are planning on making this a complete game. This page will be updated with relevant information soon.

Jumper by GhostID 2013-05-06T01:01:00

Windows only? Seems to work fine in Linux, I just had to download LWJGL.

Rocket Runner by 64Mega 2013-05-01T21:58:00

Very nice game, the booster pads are an excellent mechanic. The aesthetic is also very nice.

MinimizeArt by ahm99 2013-05-01T21:38:00

Nice game, restarting was annoying though. Time to complete a perfect run: 44.
(Unrelated: I ported my game to Windows if you want to check it out.)

YLBIN by intripoon 2013-05-04T00:23:00

Fantastic game, great concept. The audio got a bit annoying, but overall good job! I really love the red lava stuff, although the randomly moving pink blocks were unnecessary. Really great game!
(Unrelated: I updated my own game in response to your comment.)

Robot Boogie by Skulls 2013-05-01T20:54:00

Excellent game, certainly better than most. Level design is very good, but I never used the freeze ray.

Depth by Maple 2013-05-06T03:01:00

Wow, excellent use of rotation. I got to level 12 before I got stuck.

I DIED. by NateNaterson 2013-05-04T03:34:00

Very nice game. The core mechanics definitely need to be explored more. I really hope you guys keep updating this!

Compactor by VDOgamez 2013-05-01T21:48:00

Very interesting concept, I would love to see this made into a full game. It mainly just needs to be rebalanced, I think.

Funky Lincoln Saves the Day by TheCze 2013-04-30T03:11:00

Very fun and difficult game!

Bouncy Ball Extreme by Ray_Mickelino 2013-05-01T21:20:00

Very nice, but I felt that building up speed was a bit annoying. Needs a bit of polish, but it's a solid game.
(Unrelated: I ported my game to Windows, if you want to check it out.)

Potato Dungeon by _Rilem 2013-04-30T03:23:00

Awesome! This game is delicious.

Dragon Drop by Tom 7 2013-05-02T06:01:00

Very interesting, although the mouse is super laggy. It's still playable, though, nice job!

Myrne 6312 by Beldarak 2013-05-08T06:14:00

Very nice! I love the aesthetic. One of the best games I've played so far! I will definitely come back to play this again.

Save the Potato, Save the world. by JohnnySix 2013-05-01T22:41:00

Amazing game, I love the aesthetic. The rectangles that appear over blocks as you move around are awesome. The music is great, as well. Definitely one of the best games I've seen so far.

Piano Stairs by robmozart 2013-05-04T19:44:00

Seems to work fine on Linux when run from source.

RGB by Jaus_LXXIV 2013-05-02T00:46:00

This would be very nice with a touchscreen. Pretty cool idea.

Minty Relaxation by TheChris 2013-04-30T03:02:00

Nice game! Very entertaining and challenging.

Tri-Forever by TaleLore 2013-05-03T07:08:00

Great game! The core mechanics are pretty solid, but the physics seem a bit too unforgiving.
Note: I had to rename "Vignette.png" to "vignette.png" (lowercase "V") to get it to run on Linux from source.

Minimal: The Tiny Beast with the Big Hunger by Pat Hemphill 2013-05-01T21:42:00

Took me a minute to figure out how to play, but it's a nice game. I really like the blood effect. I kind of wish there was some build-up to the fight, though.
(Unrelated: I believe I fixed that shader error in my game, if you want to check it out.)

color bounce by shuall 2013-05-02T02:50:00

Nice polygons. It's good to see another Linux developer, too. I don't fully understand the menus, but I believe my highscores are:
Red: 303
Orange: 803
Yellow: 3003
Green: too easy

QUEST SPACE by VictorGrunn 2013-05-01T21:27:00

It's a bit too minimal for my tastes, but it seems to be well-made. Without the slightest illusion of choice, pressing spacebar repeatedly isn't very fun. Still, it's nice for about 30 seconds.
(Unrelated: I ported my game to Windows if you want to check it out.)

Tubulance by merteor 2013-05-04T02:55:00

Very awesome, I love this kind of game. However, like Tom 7, I spent a lot of time squinting. Maybe you could apply a visual effect to make far objects look bigger. Other than that, incredible game. One of the best.

LD28 — You Only Get One

Shovel Master by DBRalir 2013-12-17T22:21:00

Thanks for the comments, guys! We were really rushed, and weren't able to add everything we wanted.

Expect a post-compo version!

YOGO YOLO ARENA by acronaut 2013-12-17T18:58:00

Looks like it has some potential; I'll be looking forward to any updates.

Akh by Midnight Creators 2013-12-17T17:03:00

The gameplay was a bit too bland, but the aesthetic is great. I love the scrolling story images! The gameplay could be improved with tighter movement and more challenging platforming.

GRAIL by pLaw 2013-12-17T18:04:00

Really great game. It fits the theme well. Perhaps some branching paths would add some replay value.

Rainbbow Man by Eric 2013-12-28T19:57:00

Neat game, but it's unplayable due to the slowness. I have a very powerful machine, so even with an unoptimized game loop, it should run fine.

I noticed that there seems to be VC++ debug info (RainbowMan.pdb). If you're building the application in Debug mode, that could be the cause of the slowness, but I doubt it.

Using "delta time", like others suggested, fixes a lot of issues. However, it will probably not fix the speed issue. Limiting the framerate would be a good start. Perhaps you could upload your source code and allow a kind passerby to diagnose it.

Also, that Mozart music file is 90 MB! That is unacceptable, please never use WAV for music. I recommend FLAC (40 MB, lossless quality) or Ogg Vorbis (7.6 MB, use this one please). If you hate freedom, MP3 is similar to Vorbis (7.5 MB).

Anyway, congratulations on your first game! It's nice to see that others are using C++.

Jump Chip by arkeus 2013-12-17T18:51:00

Very fun game, it got very difficult near the end.

TITAN SOULS by Claw 2013-12-17T19:21:00

Fantastic game, definitely my favorite so far.

LD34 — Two Button Controls / Growing

Dungeon of Choice by DBRalir 2015-12-19T20:36:00

Thanks for the kind comments, everyone! I'll try to return the favor.

@Clavus That's a really strange glitch. It's not the draw order; it seems to be a depth buffer error.

If anybody else gets a similar glitch, please let me know what kind of graphics card and OS you're using.

Swamp Witch by RhysD 2015-12-18T14:15:00

Excellent game.

The graphics are very impressive. The overall aesthetic is very nice, and leads to a nice spooky atmosphere.

I would have liked a small bit of bullet spread to help with aiming. Tapping the keys seems turns the witch about 10 degrees, which makes it very difficult to hit the small enemies.

Combining controls for turning and aiming doesn't seem to work too well unless there is some way to shoot in other directions.

The progression is nice, but a bit unbalanced. I was able to beat the final boss, but only by injecting my broom directly into his forehead and simply winning the DPS race.

The upgrades are nice, but having to purchase ingredients feels like an unnecessary extra step. Also, because of the low precision of the turning controls, I was skeptical of the turn speed upgrade, and ended up beating the game without it.

The bosses were fun to fight at first, but eventually I had seemingly maxed out fire rate, and my damage was high, so I was able to kill most of the bosses without even turning.

Overall, a very good game. It feels like a mix of Rogue Legacy and Luftrausers. If you polish this up, add a couple hours of content, and put it on Steam, I'd definitely purchase it.

P.S. Needs some jack-o'-lanterns.

Growvolution by pi_pi3 2015-12-31T19:46:00

Interesting game, but too slow-paced for me. Humans are too easy to defeat. Artwork is nice.

I got this error when fighting a human: http://hastebin.com/vatenurohi.txt

Assimilate by benjammin1391 2015-12-16T10:17:00

Extremely unpolished. The core mechanics are nice, but the single stage doesn't give an opportunity to explore them. In fact, it's possible to complete the stage without picking up any of the orbs.
