LD48 — Deeper and deeper

Deep Bomb Galactic! by Gale-swift 2021-04-27T06:19:39Z

I had a really fun time with this! It has a lot of replayablity with the fun physics interactions and special bombs. It feels very arcade-y with every detail, especially in the sound effects, the song, and the sprite work. It's clear this game was made with a lot of passion and skill. Every aspect of the game seems calculated and unique. The special bombs feel extremely '2010s sandbox flash game' in the best way possible.

This is a fun arcade style physics-based mining game. I could play this for hours.

Abyss. by Darylsteak 2021-04-27T04:43:35Z

I really enjoyed playing this game. It's very reminiscent of lunar lander! My favourite part was definitely the audio, which was super well done and really added to the atmosphere of the game. Thanks for not using audio jumpscares :). The map feels very complicated but I always felt like I knew where to go. *spoilers ahead* I found the wreckage before the massive sea creature thing, so when my weapons jammed and it said there was danger nearby that was very suspenseful. I was a bit confused by how the decoys worked. I thought my goal was to get it to hit the decoys, so I just planted them everywhere. It took me a while to figure out it was the naval mines that damage it. I also spent too long trying to find a way to un-jam my weapon. I think all of these problems could be fixed by expanding the super cool 'incoming transmission' thing with a couple more messages. Also, once you've pressed M to try (and fail) to start the rescue, you can't seem to press it to pause the game any more. Overall, it's super impressive for a game jam game, and I could easily see something like this on steam if it was expanded a little.

Tldr: This is a good game and you should play it.

Mineshaft Muddle by Luther-1 2021-04-27T05:37:59Z

The art style here is really nice! My favourite sprite in the game is the little creatures in the shop. I think this version of tower defense is a cool new idea, and I like how it consistently feels difficult. I feel like the game itself could use a little polish. For example, the text is black on a very dark background, the next wave starts right after you sell your diamonds, and the game only takes up the top left third-ish of my monitor, and the rest is just white. In a more general sense, the quickly scaling difficulty never lets you feel safe, but it also means you'll never last too long. How long you live is almost completely based on luck.

+1 bonus point for comic sans

Tldr: This is a cool new twist on tower defense, but it could use some balancing/quality of life improvements. Nice game!

The Deepest Dungeon by Susumu Asaga 2021-04-27T23:47:38Z

Played through it by clicking very fast manually. The graphics are very cool and it's well polished. I got a bug where sometimes the were pitch black. Overall i'm not the biggest fan of idle games, but this wan was fun to play. Good job!

Rover in a Hole: The Quest for the ULTRA STONE by windfall890 2021-04-27T05:02:39Z

This game really reminds me of a mobile game I used to like playing. It has a really charming atmosphere and I like the visual style very much. It's very satisfying when you have all the upgrades and you're speeding through the level. I felt incentivized to plan out my route, and I had a big drop on one side where I could go down fast. I would have loved to play this in fullscreen, but you don't seem to have that enabled on itch.io. also, I couldn't really tell whether the 'I' shaped block or the 'H' shaped block was first available to mine, which led to me accidently breaking a block I didn't mean to. The game is well paced at the end, but the first couple speed upgrades feel inconsequential.

Tldr: This game is satisfying to play, and i'd love to see the idea expanded!

Cloudlands by Infraxion 2021-10-05T19:19:28Z

What a unique idea! I enjoyed this a lot. I think the best part of this game is the execution. It's not terribly long, and it never stays on one idea long enough for it to get boring. Despite the games themselves being pretty janky (intentionally?), it has a pretty good amount of polish to it. I think the best way to describe it is commitment to the bit.

I actually started playing the html5 version, saw the first pop-up, and went and downloaded the windows version... started to pick up on it then.

So if I had to give a critique, I'd say I never really felt like I had a goal, and there wasn't any progression other than "ok, this is happening now" - and still - I don't care, because of how charming and short it is.

Fun game!

Alchemy Sandbox by Constantine Pallas 2021-10-06T19:53:23Z

@abuelitajoe Thanks for the heads up, it's now fixed!

@pandi Any future updates to the game will include options for particle size and more UI elements, including a quit button and a way to return to the title screen. Thank you for playing the game and for your feedback.

@ericbomb Thanks for the suggestion - this was actually the way it originally worked. The problem was that it would cause some chain reactions, where the result of a reaction would still be touching particles that it could react with and unlock another element. It looked quite funny, water + dirt + fire would immediately explode into gold. I looked into the issue where you couldn't place things sometimes, and what's happening is when the screen clears on new element discovery, the 1000 particle limit isn't reset. I'll be sure to fix this one, but a quick fix is to click the clear all button. Thanks for playing!

@jaker I've actually made a couple small improvements that would potentially allow for well over 1000 particles. My computer is able to handle a little over 3000 before framerate rapidly drops, but it's difficult as each particle is physically simulated. If/when I update this game, I'll be certain to include the option to change or even disable the particle limit. Thank you so much for your interest.

MineCraftMine by automatonvx 2022-04-07T04:18:32Z

It's a cool idea, and I had fun playing it, but the controls are bad. It's almost impossible to walk just one block in any direction, placing objects is finnicky, I couldn't find a way to directly attack enemies, who mostly just seem to pathfind around defenses. The landmines are never worth it, and the blocks take 2 right clicks to place but only 1 left click to accidentally remove and destroy. You don't even get it back. I had to open and close the crafting menu a couple of times for it to work, even after getting materials. If you fixed the controls, I think this game would be a lot of fun, and a great base to build something on top of. I thought the music and graphics were nice, and this is a good use of the theme.

Bark Park! by Space_man 2022-04-05T04:08:52Z

This is fun - My favourite part was definitely the adaptive soundtrack!

WASDWASDWASDWASD by Beard or Die 2022-04-07T04:26:58Z

Interesting idea. I found the audio to be pretty off-putting, but the gameplay was good. The camera shakes around when the character dies.

Rising Tide by VivianMochi 2022-04-05T06:15:35Z

Absolutely fantastic quality. I'm a big fan of picross puzzles, and this game is very relaxing. It's a great use of the theme, and a really unique twist on a genre I really enjoy. The music is very good, but gets a little repetitive. The pallet swap feature - and the rest of the graphical work is basically perfect for this sort of game. I really like that I was able to very quickly determine a strategy, but the game is nuanced enough that it isn't obvious whether that strategy is ideal. I'll definitely be coming back to play more of this game.

One question - Where can the seashells spawn, and is it possible to know if a shell is touching a jelly?

Crushing Dread by Sciman101 2022-04-05T05:36:06Z

I think this game fits the theme really well, and the music and SFX are done very well. I think it's a cool detail that the lever is the last thing to hold the wall back. The only bug I had was that the dialogue to build a structure would sometimes disappear, but other than that I thought it was a really polished. Also, really great job on the thumbnail picture. It really sells the idea of the game.

OSTRO by Totteri 2022-04-05T05:17:59Z

This game is extremely well made really captures a cool aesthetic theme. I'm a big fan of steganography and ""hacking"" and these sorts of puzzles, and if you are too, I'm sure you'll enjoy this game. The theme, world-building, and gameplay are all really unique, and the team at Totteri have managed a level of polish uncommon in jam games.

The core gameplay loop here pretty much boils down to reading files for email addresses/file addresses, and typing a couple types of commands into the terminal. There's definitely a good amount of challenge, but in my opinion it would have been interesting to see a crucial clue abstracted farther than text or a picture of text. Perhaps I missed something here? There's certainly no shortage of weird files.

My only criticism, and I'm not sure if this is a spoiler or not, but once you click the last file, there's no way to go back to the desktop, so perhaps it would be beneficial to provide some context, diegetic or otherwise, for that file being the end of the game. That way, if not everything had been discovered, the player could still choose to do other things first. I downloaded a couple files I never got to look at.

Ultimate Tennis Championship 2K22 by hajpappan 2022-04-05T05:53:42Z

It's the opposite of PONG, if that makes sense. You play as the ball, with a very hyperbolic flappy bird type of controls. It's deceivingly difficult, because you need to time your jumps really well to not go soaring off at a 90 degree angle. It's quite fun though, and I think the particle effects are a nice touch. I couldn't shake the feeling that if I timed it perfectly, I could keep the ball on the bottom of one of the paddles. I could only keep that up for a couple seconds though.

Color Copy Cats by carolinewang 2022-10-03T23:06:24Z

What a nice game! I love panko, the sprites, and the animations. One thing I found was that I was just waiting around for the colours to change for most of the game. Also, as others have said, some of the collisions are a bit off. Anyway, It was fun :)

9CELL by binroot 2023-01-09T21:59:56Z

This game has a pretty interesting, unsettling aesthetic! I think it works well with the theme, and the audio adds a lot. Good job!

Cosmic Sweep by Jammin 2023-01-10T07:44:22Z

The things I liked most about this game were the graphics and the audio. This is a game that looks and sounds appealing. I found the actual gameplay to be a bit strange. Why am I pushing things into a hole? What do the upgrades do? It feels deeply unsatisfying and indirect to push things around with this triangle, like eating a plate of food but your fork is on the end of a pool noodle. That's not to say I didn't like the game though. When I had enough of the literal Sisyphean task, I decided to just pick a direction and go. The background fades away in a very nice way as you accelerate. It's a pretty game.

Reapers by SciDev 2023-01-10T07:15:17Z

This game has a lot going for it! I particularly liked the graphics. I think the environments, enemies, and even have a very unique and cool style. The music was pretty cool and the gameplay has a great fast-paced feel. I think the biggest improvements you could make would be in adding variety to the combat, or perhaps adding something to do between rounds of combat (the mostly empty screen is a bit strange). Overall, I'd say you have a lot to be proud of - this game has quite a lot of style!

Harvestigator: An IRS Tax Auditing Game by crow_seeds 2023-01-09T22:27:29Z

This game was fantastic! The graphics, music, and voiceovers stood out to me as excellent. I could easily see this releasing on Steam if you added more days with additional fun characters. For a jam game, it's really something special. Great work!

Data Farmer v1.0 by Neeeb_ 2023-01-10T07:00:14Z

It's an interesting take on the theme! It gets repetitive very fast, though. My biggest recommendation would be to add an upgrade that increases the amount of data you can sell at once.
