LD28 — You Only Get One

Charon by jerombd 2013-12-18T22:03:00

1. Love the graphics - gave off vibes of the monsters off Ghouls n' Ghosts. Took a little bit of time to figure out the mechanics but once I got the hang of it was a nice little adventure venturing the depths of the underworld.
2. The initial audio is a little painful as I was wearing headphones.
3. Whilst I had no idea what the words were written but they fitted the theme and were unique enough to get a rough idea for directions.

Nice little puzzle worth the extra time to figure out. Thanks for making this!

Prime Mover by andreimarks 2013-12-19T14:24:00

Fantastic game - oh my god those levels are so irritating! Gave up after the 4 way collision level.
1. Love the effect of the level exploding at the end if you mess up. Reminds me of the minefield scene off Finding Nemo.
2. Feel that the game would play beautifully on a device, although I think you might lose the panic of not being able to get your mouse across the screen in time to stop a ball which (despite it's annoyance) is a essential part of the gameplay.
3. There was a couple of times where I'd be selecting one ball and would press in a certain direction only to find that I'd' selected another ball with no effect on movement for the original. Don't know if reducing the collision radius of the cursor would help this or not.
4. An excellent choice with the audio for the game. Those meaty sound effects gave a certain satisfaction to winning and even losing.
5. Think the difficulty curve could've been a little gentler, but I appreciate that this is a game jam so hopefully a future investment.
5. Visuals were clean and crisp.
6. Tutorial was genius - the best things in life are the simplest.
7. Not sure if intentional but the level with the windmill of death there is a hole in the back of the level and the players can loop around. After the previous level felt a bit of a cop-out. Might want to check it out since I can see on the screenshots of yours there is a wall there.

Definitely think that this game deserves more attention. Comment on some more games and I'm sure you'll get some more feedback!

Panacea by TriBeard 2013-12-19T15:08:00

Love the colour scheme for the game! Felt like firework pollination.
1. The anticipation of waiting for the enemy orbs to gather enough in the centre at the beginning reminded me of the Crash mode on Burnout 3. Was a good call to let the player take their time and choose when to initiate.
2. Game definitely gave of the feeling of being an architect of your own destruction - was a definite panic moment when the orbs began to just explode themselves and spread.
3. Liked that you had the grid area but didn't limit the player to it - was chasing a string of orbs out of there one time and thought it would stop me but was pleased to find that wasn't the case.
4. Music was peaceful for such a chaotic game, gave off a doctor who-ish vibe. Good Stuff!
5. Think that once you've died, the remaining exploding people should be added to the score.
6. A slight noise when you infect individuals would be good, maybe even increase the pitch as your multiplier increases.
7. Would be interested to see if local multiplayer could be implemented - seeing players attempting to seal each other off and destroy one another would be fascinating.
8. Would've liked to see many many many many colour explosions or if you could figure it out, a different colour depending on how far down the chain it went.
E.g
first exploded orb = blue
second exploded orb (as a result of the first) = green
third exploded orb (as a result of the second) = Red.
With that you'd get distinguishable waves of colour which would look awesome.

Great work, thanks for making this and hope to see more from the project!

El Presidente by AlexVsCoding 2013-12-19T13:35:00

Thanks for all the nice comments folks!
1. For people who missed it, the score is on opposite sides of the window frame from each other. If I keep development going I'll make a custom graphic with the writing scratched in with lines e.g. IIII kills
2. I was going to make a 1 player mode but I much prefer games which encourage social interaction in the same environment. Also, there's that little thing of programming an AI...
3. There wasn't a sound designer handy unfortunately, but getting audio for the game is an absolute priority since it adds so much to the game.
4. There was a plan to add a speech that the president reads out giving the assassin a limited time to eliminate him. This would be displayed as a graphic similar to a karaoke screen, slowly passing through the words.
5. One thing I noticed from testing with my brother was that he spammed the mouse to try and find me in the crowd. Though the technique of his failed miserably, I'll add making a mouse click fire your bullet regardless of if you're on target. The crowd would run off, leaving the assassin exposed but since sniper's bullet has been fired, nothing to stop the assassin from killing the president. This would give a certain gratification to the assassin, as they could run around all they liked and taunt the sniper before killing the president.
6. May add in blood but might just make body limbs pop apart similar to lego instead to keep the game out of the mature section.

Troika by Polyknight_+_dragonGlitch 2013-12-19T00:39:00

1. Got to say, when I saw those trees move for the first time, I knew it was going to be a beautiful game. The dull blues against that yellow golden sky really bring out the silhouettes.
2. Sprites were beautifully drawn, just could've done with a consistent death animation to accompany.
3. Enjoyed the depth of the puzzles - the variety of powers allowed for multiple routes through the level, many times killing myself just so I could go back and experience the other 2.
4. I'm a slight hypocrite for saying it (considering my game lacked this) but some sound I feel would've added atmosphere and depending on sound effects, scale to the scene.
5. I would've liked something to collect in the level, especially since it was so much fun to fly around by alternating quickly the black orb power that something to gather would be the cherry on the cake.

Thanks for making this and will look into your other work to see what else you've made!

One way out by lennaert 2013-12-18T19:51:00

1. Whilst I wanted to keep trying to play this one, I died from attempting to jump over a static boulder which killed my player. Felt very unsatisfying for a game that I really wanted to explore as a human. It may have been worth making it clear to the player in game that you only had one life. Something as simple as a speech bubble saying "If I die, I'm not going to get a second chance!
2. To have one life forever for a game is not a familiar thing for many players (whilst I do think its a really neat idea).
3. What would be a fair way to counter the permadeath would be if you cause the death of someone e.g. push someone as a ghost into a pit you can claim their body and give yourself another chance at getting a shot of escape. On the other hand, maybe even more interesting if you had to help them escape by lowering things out of their reach and flicking switches in a poltergeist-like way.
4. I definitely think that spawning players as ghosts next to a dead body would be far less distressing for the player (e.g. thinking you're still playing as the explorer when actually you're guaranteed to die.
5. I find the character quite lovable by the way. The smile on his face despite the circumstances and his googly eyes are full of life, obviously contrasted by the cold, shakey image of his dead state. Real good job with that one.
6. Potentially an opening stage of your character entering the cave to introduce the controls followed by a long fall/cave collapse to get them where they need to be to start the game.
7. Loved the art style - had definite vibes of the Mr Skops levels from the original Rayman.

Thanks for the contribution and I'll be paying attention to what you lot produce in the future, real good stuff!

One Wish by miwuc 2013-12-18T20:45:00

Lovely little game - did genuinely like how there was a variety of different wishes from the ridiculous to the meaningful. Was a little difficult to choose between the more personal ones but the game offset the guilt with amusing ones.
With it coming up to Christmas, it's a nice reminder of what really matters and what is just trivial.

Hilarious twist by the way of how to end sadness on the final day!

Science Ship Cleomedes by KunoNoOni 2013-12-18T19:18:00

1. I thought that the assigning of letters to the different options was a nice touch, although I found myself pressing those keys instead of the spacebar. Having those as options for activation in game would be great.
2. The stars moving in the background made me feel like I was flying through a blizzard which felt awesome and gave a real sense of speed.
3. Would've liked to have seen the asteroids spin but a petty thing really.
4. Definitely think the story added to experience - seeing that distance counter slowly drop reminded me of apollo 13 with the astronauts being so far from earth.
5. Have to admit I waited a little while to see if staying in the cutscene would reduce the distance, but unfortunately not! What would've been really cool is you slow down to drifting speed for cutscenes then activate the engines.
6. What would've also been nice is allowing you to offset the speed of the ship (how long it takes between stages) to give you a quicker time between weapons.
7. Do feel it got a bit extreme on the second section with the space pirates - after just making it through the asteroid field made facing the same chaos but with the addition of lasers too much, especially since the previous section had to be replayed.

Overall an enjoyable experience which definitely filled me with a real sense of desperation, especially upon realizing how hopelessly outgunned I was against the space pirates.

Thanks for building and good luck!

You only get one COLOUR by soy_yuma 2013-12-19T00:09:00

1. Got to say, the thing that really sells the game to me, as basic as they are is the sound effects. They're hilarious!! Reminds me of the robot noises my Grandad used to make when I'd poke the different moles on his face.
2. I like the feeling on jumping and quickly hammering through the different options to find the right answer - a definite thrill to that, I found the sahara level the most enjoyable for that.
3. The level about going to different planets finished me off - ended up spamming the keys in frustration. Feel that the difficulty curve on that level was way too steep.
4. Nice story to it - there if you want it but not shoved in your face so you can immerse yourself in it or just focus on the puzzle.
5. Would love to see what the community could do with a level editor for this. If you've seen the game TimeFukc the level editor for that adds a whole new dimension to that game (I know I know, 48 hours).
6. The controls did feel a little sticky at times - there were points where I'd switch colour and the accompanying key I'd pressed to move in a certain direction would keep applying (e.g. would continue moving left past where I wanted to land. This on the levels later on which required absolute accuracy this had enough of an effect on gameplay to make me quit.
7. What would be nice for the less experienced player would be to for every time they fail, increase the saturation of the background for that level, so when people are really getting screwed over they can see what the next colour needed to be. I found it very difficult co-ordinating between the colour choice and the jumping simultaneously so maybe having this as a basic aid would still require the player to choose the right colour but with an idea of what's coming next. Then once you've completed the level you could set that saturation back to zero so no indication is given.

Hope this is some useful feedback and thanks for making a cool game for me to play!

LD31 — Entire Game on One Screen

Bluman by Luis Anton 2014-12-08T02:49:00

Love the visuals, sound effects are class (remind me of lemmings) and certainly enough stressful puzzles to keep me occupied for a good while.

My only qualm is the browser version seems to have a heavy amount of lag. It may just be my computer (as it's had a looong day) but thought I'd let you know in case it was something you could fix. Checked the downloadble version and it ran perfectly.

Really great work. Get some rest!

Thanks for making this game!

SCREEN_BOMBER by Xaychru 2014-12-08T00:42:00

My god i love how this game looks! Those explosions at the end of the level feel super duper good. Personally rather than a lever for the detonation, I would have a plunger (and allow you to push the plunger down).

I reached what I think was level 3 (the one with the S shape) and couldn't figure out what I was meant to do next. Hope it's just me being dumb and not an error as I was enjoying playing the game!

Thank you for making this and very best of luck in the competition!

GAMER TOAD* by Fonserbc 2014-12-07T21:37:00

I really like this game! I did find some times that the range of the frog's collision was a bit big (killed me when I wasn't under the tongue).

Music was super snazzy and I really like the eyes of the toad as well!

Just noticed the asterisk - nice touch.

With the audience in the background, it might be nice for an applause upon completing a level.

Thanks for making this and best of lick!

Titan by notajetski 2014-12-08T01:37:00

Mate, I had a boatload of fun playing this.

Something I've never seen before in a game (moving between the different windows).

I shared this with my partner and we explored the maze together over Skype. Was really fun talking about where we'd got to and the names of places we were.

I can imagine an alternative to this game would be to have some kind of beautiful backdrop split up into the different levels and the correct arrangement of the blocks would help you navigate. You could even have it then change to indicate a new arrangement of the map.

Is there some kind of positioning of the levels that helps you? (Feel free to privately message me if you'd rather not spoil it on here https://twitter.com/alexvscoding)

How did you do the window switch thing?

Thank you very much for building this.

Polo by ChrisGaudino 2014-12-08T00:31:00

Lovely mechanics - feels ridiculously good to play.

Quick fix issue - when I change the sensitivity then use the arrow keys it shifts the sensitivity whilst in gameplay.

The sound gets very repetitive quickly - get 3 or 4 different tones (different ones for the different coloured keys) with some kind of soothing tone.

Having multiple layers to this (a triangle in the middle which you rotate with A and D.

Thanks again for making this game!

Princess Saving Princes by Fnkee 2014-12-08T01:58:00

Love the colour pallete for this game! Very cute graphics.

Not sure if I just didn't get to it, but that bridge to me needs something reaching up out of that canyon to grab the players!

I would really like to see this developed into a huge map with different routes through the world (to a variety of princes.

It kind of reminds me of a story book, especially down to the different still poses of the characters. the one on the log is my personal favorite.

Great work and the very best of luck in the competition. Thanks for making this!

WASD The Heck? by Dream Of Sleeping 2014-12-07T21:29:00

Very neat mechanics - enjoyed the multitasking element very much. Co-ordinating between those keys is super hard!

Watching them drift was nice and relaxing (until of course you realize where they're drifting.

Might be interesting if you offer a random start position mode (for the letters you control).

And then there's the option that I'd love to see which would be customization of which keys you use and how many keys you have to control (minimum 4 of course).

My best score was 5.

Thanks for making this!

Tone Door by TheJiv 2014-12-07T22:02:00

Hello fellow Stencyler!

Your trees are real neat - the square ones are pretty cool.

I really really like the echo effect after you've performed the correct sequence.

The door would've looked much better if you could've built up a rockwall/cave for it to be sat into.

Whilst I'd suggest more help with playing the game, I got the hang of it quick thanks to the visual feedback you had in place when you pushed wasd over the ground pads.

Thanks for making this game!

CRUSH by AlexVsCoding 2014-12-07T19:55:00

Hey Mate, sorry for the interruption - it's back up now!

CRUSH by AlexVsCoding 2014-12-07T21:19:00

Should be working now. Failing that, here's the link to the game jolt build! http://gamejolt.com/games/arcade/crush/41025/

Snowball juggling Olympio by Benjamin 2014-12-08T03:54:00

You had me sold at the GIF you posted on the feed. A truly wonderful game (although I sucked snowballs at it).

I imagine it'd probably be easier to operate with the assistance of a mouse.

That swirly winter backdrop is amazing and the colour choices are perfect for the game.

I genuinely can't figure out if this is 3D to look like 2D or 2D rendered to look like 3D.

Thank you so much for making this game and I wish you the very best of luck!

Please get in touch via my Twitter as I'd love to see what other stuff you work on!

endless rules by dunin 2014-12-08T02:11:00

Got to the 9th rule. Very neat idea! The 8th rule really kept messing me up.

ARENA++ by undefinist 2014-12-07T21:49:00

The concept is great but I felt quite restricted not being able to shoot the enemies dead whilst the arena changes size. Either everything should be frozen whilst it gets smaller or everything remain in motion.

Also noticed that there's actually more time waiting for the levels to change than there is for time to shoot enemies. Should definitely be the other way around (more time in the arena with more enemies to give justification for the longer time period and less time transitioning).

Also, as a personal preference, I prefer keyboard based shooting (up down left right) so if you could add that in as an extra option (so I wouldn't need to fumble the trackpad) that would be great.

Love the fat bullets, but think it could do with different weapon variations, especially as the enemies grow in number.

Love the look of the main character - reminds me of Flash Gordon.

With a bit of tweaking and refining, I think this could be super awesome.

Same Insane by hazzahazzam 2014-12-08T03:29:00

Really good job with getting so much playability out of one level structure! That's a lot of different mechanics to have to program within the time constraints!

The one that beat me was the gravestones one. Man that was difficult!

If the turtle could just have his little feet plod I feel that would add a lot to the visuals.

Changing the hue was a real nice touch - on the grave level it was the only way for me to know I'd died! Also looked super awesome if you died quick (RAINBOW MODE ACTIVATE).

A death counter I feel would certainly add more to the game.

Thanks for making this and best of luck for the competition!

Alarming Perception by mintybacon 2014-12-08T03:13:00

Game has a great mood to it! Mind you, genuinely thought that the spider scorpions were only going to be visible on the screen and invisible in the first person view!

I think that the player on the map needs to be made a little clearer (since you have very limited movement to compare to see where you are!

Great work and wish you the very best of luck with the competition!

Mobile Life by tonypai 2014-12-07T21:53:00

Sweet little game.

Thought being able to push the home button and return to the menu was a nice touch.

Initially was a bit confused as I thought he was carrying a gun! Maybe for the first one, a more natural way of holding a phone?

On the second play through, the achievements were stuck on the screen.

Great work, thank you very much for making this game.

Core by MrSun 2014-12-08T02:30:00

I really really like the concept for this game - just a shame that it crashes so often (to the extent that it signs me out of Wordpress and I have to write this comment again from memory :P

Took me a while to get that first jump right, but when I did everything made sense and looked wonderful.

I'd suggest for the first time that they do each maneuver (e.g. dig/jump between cores) you have a text prompt on the screen to help. I remember not being sure what I was doing the first few playthroughs (my partner is on the other end of the line on Skype and she initially sounded confused as well).

Another thing; it'd be neat if the cores would swell and shrink (to make them harder to reach as you went on) and also the possibility of multiple cores would be pretty cool.

This is a great game and you should be proud of what you got done. I hope you'll consider continuing development on it!

Thanks for making this!

Iaido by shuanDang 2014-12-08T02:06:00

This game has a real nice feel to it. I imagine on a tablet or phone this would do me for a very long time.

Suggestions:

I'd make the bamboo appear to grow out of the ground and shift from a dull brown to a vibrant green (green indicating ready to cut).

That delay is my only qualm with the game - takes you right out of engagement. You're doing all these super fast taps and moves and then you have to slow down and wait for 10 seconds. These kind of games you want to be back into combat as fast as physically possible.

Other than that, really great. On tablet if you could make it multiplayer where you swipe out from the players position, that'd be really cool. Make it that your character gathers bamboo in a backpack and slashing your opponent will cut through his bag straps and make him drop his loot.

Thanks for making this and best of luck in the competition!
