Really enjoyable little game, with great sword animations. Loved the music using your voice too!! The 10s twists were interesting but sometimes didn't add much or fit that well with the gameplay. I also found that just by spamming left and right clicks you could win easily - perhaps there should have been a timer that stopped me doing that.

pink-sun 2022-10-03 08:41

Quite enjoyable, with impeccable sound design as well!

chetthonctus 2022-10-03 08:49

I found this pretty fun! There were two issues with the gameplay which could make it a lot more challenging if fixed though, firstly once you manage to land a hit you can spam left click and the opponent is basically stun locked until you win the round. If you carry on spamming left click after they go down you can also get in another swing and win an extra round. So it kind of comes down to getting in one hit and then winning two rounds.

I didn't find that I could interact too much with the 10 second distractions, except for healing swords I basically just ignored them and went for the attack spam strat.

The sound design and music in this game is incredible.

clement-k 2022-10-03 09:12

I love this game! The sound effects/music make everything works for me! It's almost a shame to have to wait 10 seconds between each special event. Nice job!

sky 2022-10-03 09:59

Very fun game, and for me that's the number one most important thing! The vocal music track is excellent and the animation tells are good, although I'm not quite fast enough to properly react. Had to relay on spam clicking to get through the last few opponents. Other than that, excellent work!

jackaljk 2022-10-03 11:34

Thanks everyone! @anxiousgamedev @pink-sun @chetthonctus @clement-k @sky!

@chetthonctus I had noticed the stun lock issue, it didn't seem that systematic and I did not have time to fix it anyway. The extra round win is such a silly bug, how did it not happen to me? Nice catch, thanks!

thesnide 2022-10-03 13:01

Nice slick graphics & music. I didn't really get into the gameplay, but clicking frantically and still winning was fun nonetheless

rasblo 2022-10-04 00:07

This is my type of gameplay, loved it! Not a fan of the Lights Out one, hard to hear the attack over your sick ass beatboxing (nice soundtrack!). Won't find many like this, thanks you! :)

evgenimp 2022-10-04 09:36

This gave me Sekiro's vibes with parrying/attack flow. Very good. HAD MUCH FUN

theheheo 2022-10-04 09:36

Awesome! Loved the back and forth attack and parry, really fun gameplay and the audio is top notch.

neexor 2022-10-04 09:42

That's cool! Where I can find sound track? :D Will surely listen it on repeat

sneakylemon 2022-10-04 10:03

The idea is pretty cool, but I found the game entirely too easy. I don't think I got hit even once. The sounds are hilarious though, so good job

Would be nice to see this fleshed out

frabather 2022-10-04 11:29

This is so awasome game  I don't even know how long i just sat do nothing and listen this epic audio track. Battles are fun and enjoyable too. Love it haha

megafocus 2022-10-04 13:12

Game is ver good. Good job

jackaljk 2022-10-04 14:04

Thank you all! @thesnide @rasblo @evgenimp @theheheo @neexor @sneakylemon @frabather @megafocus

@anxiousgamedev @chetthonctus @sneakylemon I've uploaded a fixed version here: https://jackaljkdan.itch.io/iron-sword-tournament-no-exploits without the exploits that made the game easier. I think it's noticeably harder if you guys want a bigger challenge!

jackaljk 2022-10-04 15:01

@neexor oh I almost forgot! I'm so glad you liked it, you can find the soundtrack here: https://github.com/Jackaljkdan/LudumDare51/blob/master/Assets/LudumDare51/Sounds/theme.ogg

mvasko2 2022-10-04 17:52

The sounds and the music were amazing, great job! Whenever I tried to do something like this, it ended up sounding very bad - not your case

The game itself is fun and challenging

One thing I didn't like was the darkness event. It made the game very frustrating, because it became a game of chance. You just mashed buttons and hoped for the best - not good, IMHO.

Overall though, great job!

lesinvisible 2022-10-04 19:29

This fighting was much more chaotic as I remember it in a good old Prince of Persia. I mean even the non affected by the random effects part, sometimes I felt that a won by accident. But it's well put together, I liked how all the aspects like the music and sounds got worked on organically.

lenan 2022-10-04 23:38

Very nice overall, the way you did the music was very creative, at first thought it was the sound of the character talking. It was pretty fun, except the last guy that i just thought was annoying, the graphics were simple but the animations compensated for the lack of details. Overall it was all put together very nicely

david-stevenson 2022-10-05 01:42

***LOVE*** the sound design and music!

jackaljk 2022-10-06 14:36

Thank you guys! @mvasko2 @lesinvisible @lenan @david-stevenson

@mvasko2 when the lights go out you are meant to rely on audio cues to parry. I added the music last and unfortunately didn't notice how much it interferes with that event. I have uploaded a fixed version of the game in which I turn the music volume down when it's dark, if you wanna check it out the link is in the description.

@lesinvisible yes I tried to make the figthing more varied than in Prince of Persia by allowing to delay your counter attack, otherwise it easily turns into a never ending attack-parry-attack sequence. I get what you're saying about winning by accident, the original version had a couple of exploits that were definitely behind that. I uploaded a fixed version that addresses that (see the descrption) in which the last two opponenets really require you to master the combat flow.

rob6566 2022-10-06 21:23

Nice game - Loved your sounds! The coach was good too, adding a bit of personality. I saw someone already reported the extra round win when you hit them twice at the end - this happened to me almost every fight. With the stun lock it was a little easy too.

I only lost to the final fight - in later rounds, this guy killed me in one shot. Not sure if that's intentional.

Anyway, great job getting this together in such a short time.

tanis 2022-10-07 15:50

Very nice game. I like the simple and easy to grasp controls. The low-poly characters work well with this kind of game design. And the fact that you were inspired by Prince of Persia is definitely a plus. The only problem I encountered is that at some point the whole game screen turned black and I couldn't do anything about that. Then when all the rounds finished it was back to normal. Another glitch that happened is that after the earthquake I was no longer able to perform any attack or parry.

jackaljk 2022-10-07 15:56

Thank you! @rob6566 @tanis

@rob6566 the extra round bug is fixed in a new version I uploaded, see the description if you wanna check it out. The one shot thing is intentional, it's one of the ten seconds effect: the one shot sword. The blades get very bright and glow when it's active.

@tanis the screen turns black during one of the ten seconds effects called "lights out". The earthquake one is a new bug, thanks for reporting it!

tanis 2022-10-07 15:58

@jackaljk oh! I thought the black screen was a bug! It makes the game extremely difficult, though... you can't see anything, not even the swords or anything else that can give you an indication about what the enemy is doing. Is that on purpose or am I just not noticing something on the screen that could give me a hint?

jackaljk 2022-10-07 16:17

@tanis it is on purpose, you are meant to use audio cues. As soon as someone attacks you can hear him shout, usually something like "mmmfff!". Unfortunately in the original upload it blends too much with the background music. I have uploaded a fixed version that significanly fades its volume during "lights out" to address that. I like the idea of a graphical hint though, thanks!

shibaya 2022-10-07 22:27

Cool game! Good job!

hexela 2022-10-08 00:00

This is insanely fun, i couldn't stop playing till i beat the last golden swordman, very smart. (+ all the sound effects made with voice made me smile)

wheffle 2022-10-08 05:27

I couldn't get past the black fighter, but I was pretty addicted to trying. This is a great reflex fighting game, I really dig it! The audio is honestly 5/5 as well. My only gripe is that the "lights out" status is kinda bs

furano 2022-10-08 13:28

Hi there, I tried your android version of the game.

Great game, worked really well on my device! It is however quite hard ahaha... Unless you have the one kill sword and spam attacks ;)

I was surprised that buffs carried on even after a round is finished, which can be a little op when yo uhave the aforementioned one-shot sword.

I liked it! I was not able to play multi with a friend but it could be a lot of fun! Good job, you could almost release it in a slightly more polished version soon!

someone 2022-10-08 13:44

That was great. The animations were excellent and audio was entertaining. It was a good amount of challenge. I managed to win, but kinda cheated with a bug that gives you an extra point if you stab the opponent again after he goes down. Very sportsmanlike... I also managed to stun-lock the final boss which was satisfying.

jonah 2022-10-08 14:00

Great controls!! Really enjoyed controlling the sword and parrying felt super natural!

Good job making this combo game, really impressive!

jackaljk 2022-10-08 14:55

Thanks @shibaya @hexela @wheffle @furano @someone @jonah!

@wheffle yep that's the most hated effect :P it's somewhat less unfair in the post jam version in which you can better rely on audio cues

@furano yeah I find that reflex parrying on mobile is very hard, while it's between easy and ok with a mouse. I don't know why honestly, but it makes a big difference in difficulty obviously.

I decided to carry the buffs between rounds to stay true to the ten seconds theme and also because againts the first fighters rounds can easily end in less than that.

If you rate it keep in mind you played the post jam version, which I think (and hope!) it's better than the original submission.

recursor 2022-10-08 15:34

Gotta say I love the music and the gameplay is pretty fun too. The coach is a nice touch and add a lot of immersion to the game as I'm always wondering what he is going to say next. My least favorite 10-second effect is lights out becasue I end up just attacking parrying at random. However, the other effects are pretty neat actually. The different opponents also kept me playing as they did all feel at least slightly different. Nice Job.

kiririn51 2022-10-08 16:39

Lol, the music and sound effects were killing me the whole time. Good game and fairly addicting! only nitpick would be to choose better fonts and colors to make things more cohesive and give it some extra flair without extra effort. Still, great entry.

jackaljk 2022-10-11 19:22

Thanks! @recursor @kiririn51

@kiririn51 agreed on the fonts, on the colors front I actually liked the minimalism but maybe the ones I used don't mash well together? Or too much gray?

alexander-epton 2022-10-18 15:20

the screen blacked out for me after the second round. now i see it's not a bug. will replay. great audio!!!

climbing-dolphin 2022-10-21 19:01

Well that's an interesting game. I think the random effects could change the gameplay a bit more, i didn't feel the difference that much while playing. The audio felt a bit weird at start but i completely forgot about it when i was fighting... i guess it's good then? But overall i loved the game, you did an amazing job, congrats!
