Not every species could make it into the game. Here are a few of my favorite weirdos that did not make the cut: Forgotten Favorites Hex.png

iguanana 2022-10-02 20:23

Very neat idea, and I love your use of AI art for this. The text is a little small at times, but I think you did a great job overall!

ugly-robot 2022-10-03 12:27

@iguanana thank you! I agree, I had trouble fitting everything I wanted on screen (especially because the player is forced to skim the text fast). I though about having the phone 'scroll' to allow the text to be bigger, but that too would be distracting, and the image can be as important in investigating the character...

But yes - good advice, if I revisit this, making the text easier to read will be top priority

jaybaus 2022-10-03 12:48

A fun little take on the theme, I got ghosted a lot which really captured the authentic experience of dating apps... nice job :)

ugly-robot 2022-10-03 14:26

@jaybaus haha exactly - thanks for playing!

mudlee 2022-10-03 14:50

Interesting concept. I hate AI in general though for such usage, but it was interesting to interact with these ... creatures I would say. Great entry and a very interesting use of AI!

shared 2022-10-03 14:56

Pretty cool idea ! Fun to play and see what you generated. Though I did miss some guesses

Can't wait to see how all this AI stuff will advance soon, it's a very interesting subject

nash 2022-10-03 15:43

It is funny that this speed dating idea came up in our brainstorming session as well when the jam started. But we did not end up going with it and I think our version would have not been as good as this was!

It is interesting to see how AI can be used in smaller games like this. I liked the portraits a lot more than descriptions and ended up guessing a lot just by the looks of the dating partner. I probably would have hoped to have custom questions for each portrait since the questions started getting very repetitive after a few tries. It was also possible to down right guess the right option if you had seen the another answer in other conservation already.

The Rolodex was a fun touch! Great work overall!

wizcas 2022-10-03 16:05

Haha this is hilarious. Since English is not my first language, reading the character backgrounds was not quite an easy task to me, but it is still quite a pleasing experience! I think I can definitely take this game to improve my English reading skill. It's now in my bookmarks!

grandblood 2022-10-03 16:15

This is great lol. Funny AI pictures and like how you are trying to talk to one of the guys who has a bloody killer face lol. Nice!

ugly-robot 2022-10-03 16:38

@mudlee thanks for playing! I think it is really interesting seeing different people reactions to AI art - glad to hear you were able to enjoy it.

@shared thanks! Yeah - it can be quite difficult - if you were able to get any 'matches' I would definitely count that as a win!

@nash haha I wondered if I would see many similar games! I hoped the AI element might help it stand apart. I like the portraits better as well - though sometimes I felt both are needed to answer the questions fully. Definitely wanted to have more dynamic questions, but it eventually fell out of scope. With 100 characters, all the work was easily magnified. However - you mention 'down right guess'-ing, but I'm not sure I understand. The right answer depends on the species, job, and personality of the character - and the same character should not come up twice. Did you experience this? - just checking if there is a bug I need to investigate

@wizcas That's so kind of you! I'm glad you enjoyed it! Not sure if it is obvious - but the text (their 'bio's) are AI generated as well - so hopefully their grammar and whatnot is good enough!

@grandblood yeah haha I was shocked how scary some of them came out - and some had me laughing out loud! For me, the best part of working with AI for this project was little unexpected moments like that.

nash 2022-10-03 16:58

@ugly-robot Sorry if I was a bit unclear. To clarify; let's say it is the "I brought you a gift" question. If I have earlier seen that the correct answer was "Blood" for Portrait 1, then when I see the option "Blood" later again I immediately know that it cannot be the answer for Portrait 2. I do not know if the answer to this question can be the same word for multiple portraits but I doubt it.

I hope this clarified my point!

organicpencil 2022-10-03 17:14

Did smile, mission accomplished!

davidbradbury 2022-10-03 17:31

Congrats on the entry! A very fun use of AI and glad to see it used like this. I think the biggest downside was wanting to spend more time understanding each character, but I guess that's why I never did speed dating  - Mechanically, I understand why the broken hearts are there, but it felt like that added a bit more frustration than fun. That could be personal taste though. Having the Rolodex was an excellent touch. Now you just need a way to follow up with your dates!

2022-10-03 17:44

It's Fun! Good game! Menu controls awesome, I took it noted for my next games :)

tygrak 2022-10-03 17:56

Very cool use of AI, I really like how many types of Ai you combined for this. I have to say the generated piano music was the most impressive for me, it definitely just is very much good enough as background music. The creatures were a bit nightmarish, not sure if I'd like to date those! :) I wish I got more time to read the descriptions for the characters, but it wasn't easy to read it fully in just the 10 seconds :D but that is also kind of the point of the game so I understand :D. Good job! :)

hotaloca 2022-10-03 18:10

I love this idea! From the photo/background to tell what the person would love or not. The profile images were really excellent, and the piano music did the right mood. I felt sometime the text was too long to read - and especially the longers ones was difficult in 10 seconds. I think moving the ball was unnecessary, a simple choice would have been sufficient for me - with more focus on the individual (eg. shortened text or maybe extra images on what the person does/likes)... I could totally think like AI generated facebook/insta posts where the background/items on the photo, and short text would work fine. Anyhow excellent submission and great idea again.

ugly-robot 2022-10-03 20:01

@nash Ah! I see - thank you much for the clarification! It could be the correct answer if the second portrait was also a vampire - thus also wanting blood. There are 10 vampire characters who would find 'blood' a good gift - and 90 characters who prefer something else. Thank you again for your fast response!

@organicpencil Yay! Glad to hear it 😊

@davidbradbury and @hotaloca yeah - I struggled with how to do player input for the game, I started with just two simple buttons to click, but wanted to add a bit of spice to make it more arcade-y / engaging. However, when adding a more complex minigame to play, it became too difficult, so I had to scale back to the easy-ish (but somtimes annoying) broken hearts. Thank you for playing!

@cmaujluk I'm flattered! And glad you had fun!

@tygrak yeah, the music was a shocker for me too - I had expected the audio to be the least interesting part (as the 'bad' portraits were entertaining, but if the music was 'bad' - it would just be grating) - but the result I ended up with was quite charming. Especially intriguing, as solo-piano music is often considered one of the more 'soulful' genres (if that makes sense). As a piano player, I had originally intended to record myself - but decided to see if I could work in another AI - and I'm sure it did far better than I could have managed!

@hotaloca I love the idea of extra images of what the person likes to do... I wish I had thought of that!! Thank you for playing and thank you for your comment!

Also to @davidbradbury, @tygrak and @hotaloca I wish I had time to implement a 'relaxed' mode that gave the player much more time to read - I will definitely keep your comments in mind if I revisit this! Thank you for the feedback!

triangle-point 2022-10-03 22:02

Borzgon is my soulmate. very fun game

2022-10-03 22:14

Love this idea. You have found the humor in what abominations can pop out of AI generated content. Executed wonderfully with somber and sincere piano. Hilarious!

kuboxxxxx 2022-10-03 23:19

Great idea, I love those abomination you can date, I wish I had more time to read this funny texts, but it was a limiting jam theme unfortunetally. Very fun over all!

ugly-robot 2022-10-04 00:10

@triangle-point yessss I'm so happy - I was hoping someone would find a favorite creature - Borzgor is quite the choice haha

@slef hey you!

@kuboxxxxx haha yeah - If only the theme was 'every 20 seconds' amIright? Thank you for playing! I'm glad you had some fun

phillip-scott 2022-10-04 14:34

I have never played a dating sim game before - I liked the puzzle like aspect of this.

The use of AI generator was very interesting - interesting and fun submission!

mortiss 2022-10-05 14:22

Super fun game, loved it a lot. And it's educational! It teaches speed-reading)

ugly-robot 2022-10-05 14:26

@phillip-scott Thanks! Yeah, I was hoping combining the AI with a bit of dating-sim with a bit of arcadey-puzzley would help capture a slightly wider audience.

@mortiss haha thanks! That's a great way to see it

tobiasd 2022-10-05 15:35

Very unique and funny game. Inspiring use of AI. I love all the random creatures and names like "Swiftbody". Given it's such a text-based game, there was a lot that was hard to read. But you know that :)

pietrek 2022-10-05 15:55

Really funny and I love the novel way to use AI in a video game.

mbrezu 2022-10-05 15:56

Very cool game. I'm awed by the amount of content - though not sure how much is actually procedural... :-)

ugly-robot 2022-10-05 18:48

@tobiasd Thanks! And yeah - if I get into the same situation again in a future jam, I will push hard to implement a 'relaxed' mode (though, I suppose it will be a while before we have an time-limit based theme again)

@pietrek Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it

@mbrezu Thank you! And nothing is generated during gameplay, but all of the AI content was generated during the jam. Portraits were local Stable Diffusion (apx 8 hours overnight, each character creating 3-5 portraits, with me selecting the 'best' for each), the bios are from api calls to GPT3 (generated 200-300 letters for each character, editing down to only the most important sentences - adding bits here and there for continuity), the SFX were edits of Google's NSynth, and the piano music is from AIVIA, and some visual assets (like phone BG and broken hearts) were from Dall-E.

Links to the tools used are in the entry description and happy to answer any other questions!

dxk2294 2022-10-06 02:37

Clever use of AI-generated art to produce enough content to fill a speed-dating sim. Nice job!

peachtreeoath 2022-10-06 04:16

I had a similar idea to some people in the comments section. I basically tried playing 2 games here. The first one was the serious one where I read the bios and did my best guess. But later on I tried the variant where I just winged it and judged people based on the portrait. I actually thought that version was a bit more fun. The reason is because the portraits are technically the more interesting thing to judge, and when you only have 10 sec, you're so focused on the (more accurate) bio than the picture that you don't really get a chance to look at that. Of course, by just looking at the pictures, you get things wrong OFTEN.

None of this is to say the game is bad. In fact it was very unique and it was really fun to see the portraits and make judgments on them. On top of that, it was also fun to observe how the AI interpreted certain traits about us measly humans. What a teacher would look like. What a "builder". Very interesting stuff.

This was a bold entry given the state of AI being on the cusp of becoming huge. One day we're look back at the first batch of AI API games and remember this one fondly lol.

dgspitzer 2022-10-06 15:35

LOL uses both SD + GPT3 + AVIA is a pretty innovative way to create a game! Nice choice on prompts for those portraits too! I'm pretty interested in this area and looking forward to playing more games like this!

lorwon 2022-10-06 22:17

I like playing jam games for this type of entry ! - The theme is very well used. - The AI art look very good and is funny. - The gameplay mechanic is unique. - A lot of humor. - The fact that your game concept comes from all those strange result that we can have when we try to use IA for creating images !

I really enjoyed your game good job :)

hare-software 2022-10-07 14:32

Fun use of several types of AI. Had fun looking at all the strange monsters you generated and was surprised at how much I could guess from the portraits alone. Good entry!

2022-10-07 17:38

Famous personalities and politicians can do anything they want from home. The main thing is that it is in the interests of people. For me, the last lockdown was even useful. I learned how to order food online and even how to date girls online [https://centralalbertatowing.ca](https://centralalbertatowing.ca) It's even easier for me, it saves a lot of time. What about you? Did you manage to master anything new during this period?

shrillwhip 2022-10-08 13:42

This is really bizarre and unique, I really like this concept. I would really enjoy a more polished version of this game. Good job, thinking outside of the box.

ugly-robot 2022-10-10 19:16

@peachtreeoath Awesome! I love that you were able to put your own spin on the gameplay - I hoped that people would rely on the more fun image guessing hip-firing (part of the reason the image has the screen-real-estate that it does). But the bio is there for any players who might get frustrated without enough info to fully decipher on image alone. I do hope that these silly little games play some small part in getting all of us more comfortable/more familiar with current-gen AI - its prowess AND it's limitations. One day, it will be very important that as much of the public has possible has a good grasp on AI - better to start 'getting a feel' for these systems now. Glad you had some fun and really appreciate your comment!

@dgspitzer Thank you! I'm glad you found it interesting - especially coming from you! I love '10 Second Magic Artist' - which frankly is much more impressive than my silly dating game, haha. I'm really glad you were able to find a way to provide direct interaction between the player and SD. Feels like humanity is standing upon a great precipice, and though we cannot see into the darkness below, I cannot help but dream of the beauty we might find there.

@lorwon Thank you for your comment! I'm really happy you were able to find the humor in it - some of the portraits had me laughing out loud as they were generated. If they made me giggle, they went in the game!

@hare-software Thanks! Good for you - guessing on portrait alone shows a keen eye and (perhaps ironically) some well tuned personality-instincts. Or, perhaps, a good perception of how we take photos of teachers vs musicians vs builders, etc. A subtle but interesting difference!

@shrillwhip Thank you! I hope all my games come out a little bizarre 😉 And I would love to see a more polished version - I may even revisit this myself, but I would not be surprised if a more serious studio doesn't get to it first. In the not-too-far future, I'm certain we will have live conversations with in-game text-generation AIs - deep, personal, and dynamic chats. Dating sims may get to it first, as for that genre, it has perhaps the highest impact on gameplay, and they can 'focus' their dev time there (rather than, say, an open-world-RPG. They will eventually utilize it as well- but they will likely not be first). Of course, this is all just the ramblings of a non-expert internet stranger, so take it with a grain of salt.

grizwhirl 2022-10-10 19:54

That was really clever. Felt like the Tinder of Eberron

ugly-robot 2022-10-11 00:17

@grizwhirl - interesting, I've not heard of the 'Tinder of Eberron', and googling is getting me tons - is this a game? Something from the D&D setting?

langotriel 2022-10-13 15:45

Love the use of AI. It's clear that AI will play a huge part in indie game development going forward (and AAA not too much later) so it's interesting to see the beginnings of it in jams.

I don't know if I matched with anyone I could really date, but there were some pretty suitors in there for sure :eyes:

ugly-robot 2022-10-17 02:43

@langotriel thanks! Yeah, I really like that jams can be a place to experiment with cutting edge tech - making silly games with what may become important stable tools. And yeah, haha, there are certainly some unique looks among the suitors

2022-10-28 07:04

If you are looking for a woman who will be loyal, caring, and willing to take care of the children, then you should consider marrying an [asian wife](https://mailorderasianbrides.org/). These women have the ideal blend of qualities and are willing to give up personal goals for the sake of the family. Asian women also tend to have a more laid back attitude, which many gentlemen appreciate.

2022-12-20 23:42

I distinctly recall wanting to find myself a Asian bride. It's one of my favorite individuals, therefore I was eager to arrange for a [asian brides](https://mailorderbridereview.com/asian-brides/) man to wed her. However, it was challenging because these women are hard to find in social media. Asian women rarely interact with outsiders, in fact. I once held this belief. However, I later discovered married a Asian woman and understood that there are numerous tools available to help. I then began to research everything in this area and discovered where they were. I hope I was able to be of assistance; good luck.
