omg that's the undertale person

ache-games 2021-10-05 15:47

Really liked how the story is told. Well done!!

gibss 2021-10-05 17:55

Great writing and story. I think it's hard to pull off meta game humor in 2021 but this actually got me. Well done as always!

100th-coin 2021-10-05 20:44

Yeah, this is the best game I've played in a ludum dare in a long time. Good lord the one liners- you guys are brilliant. The meta jokes are non-stop and the final final fight of the game takes it to a new level. The music is such a god dang bop! Seriously, I don't hand out five star ratings often because I know I'm eventually going to find a game that freaking deserves it. You got it, chief. Every god dang category is a perfect score.

The character designs are gorgeous, (you know, before it turns into staplers and missing textures, which might I add are also incredibly well drawn). The quips, oh my lord the quips! How did you make every line of dialogue great? God dang **Gteve**! I'm crying. Oh my god you have seriously raised the bar so high.

Thank you for making this game, and godspeed. Saying you did a great job all around is an understatement.

lunacyecho 2021-10-05 21:07

@ache-games @gibss thanks so much for playing and commenting! :D

@100th-coin oooh i believe gteve is johnfn's baby. he put it in as a placeholder npc and we kept it in because we loved it (either that or none of us remembered to change it. i can't remember exactly.) thanks for the kind words!

popertots 2021-10-05 22:03

A surprising amount of detail/content included for the 72h limit. Very well done. 5/5

bountyhat 2021-10-06 00:19

I really like the game! Cannot believe you guys pull it out within 72h. The dialogue, the character graphics and music really adding to the school vibe. The battle system is well designed and fun to play. 5/5

kartik-kini 2021-10-06 02:06

Absolutely hilarious. Perfect blend of self aware and original. Well done.

zvyaga 2021-10-06 06:45

Cool roguelike with interesting mechanics. Narrative combat in collaboration with mechanics from Guitar Hero. I really liked the visual, the drawn characters.

vitor-milioni 2021-10-06 06:57

Oh what a breath of fresh air, wasn't expecting to play a "jrpg", much less one with such an original and cool combat system, the lines of the notebook being your dodging lanes was brilliant, hitting the right words was a great idea, i would only say that "cry" didn't feel good to use, every single time i was losing just as much health as i recovered or even more. And oh my god LunacyEcho, that soundtrack was so fucking great, what a banger, loved it and it went perfectly with the rest of the game, the "notebook art" artstyle was great, the script was great, absolutely lovely game, amazing job everyone involved!

hartvichio 2021-10-06 06:58

All the components fit together really well, art style, audio and gameplay.

The only improvement i see straight away would be more content, but this is a jam so good job!

wedgiebee 2021-10-06 07:00

Woof! That was an adventure! Thanks for taking me on a journey! There was lots of good writing in there but my fave was definitely right at the beginning when the teacher sends you to detention for being such a huge loser. Incredible.

I really loved the main word dodging/identifying mechanic! It was a... fast-paced reading mechanic?? Which I had never seen and which was fun! Reading is fun it turns out! As things got faster though, I definitley preferred the scenarios where EVERY word in the insult was capitalized, that way I didn't have to parse out which words to actually hunt for. The parsing aspect was fun with the slower challenges though!

Boss theme was nice :) Always love some surprise vocals.

Great work! Role swapping turned out nice, hope it was fun!

squigglez 2021-10-06 07:01

loved this game! the music was super great, and the writing was 10/10. also liked the battle mechanics after i got the hang of it, pretty unique take on this undertale battle style

sploky 2021-10-06 07:02

Hecking great game. The art is good. It's funny at times. Love it. I cant believe you made this in three days.

nebrazif 2021-10-06 07:04

You did a great job, everything was really good, at the end with the front door after beating her and beating the end, i managed to launch my actions from the upper right action box

magic-mike 2021-10-06 07:09

The punchlines woooooooow. Great game i really had a lot of fun, gameplay wise and story wise.

I felt the "no one will play you in three weeks", really tremendous job.

sceef 2021-10-06 07:16

Great job!

gryhyphen 2021-10-06 07:19

Wow, this game is really fleshed out, super engaging and has great art and music! It has some minor bugs, but nothing game breaking. Honestly really sweet!

I think I'm kinda understating how much stuff you all got done, this is like 20 minutes of gameplay, that's way impressive for a gamejam!

Since the game is so short and tight, beyond asking for things like collision hitboxes to be neater in rooms, and fixing a bug when you click an action at 0 hp (messes up the ui a bit until next battle)... not really much I can offer in terms of constructive criticism. Great job!

louiejams 2021-10-06 07:53

Nice art and fun ideas. I found the hidden one in the dark :D

rayredd 2021-10-06 08:06

Such a well rounded game. I enjoyed playing it to the end although I didn't manage to beat "myself".

beats 2021-10-06 08:26

Whoa, meta-ception, fourth even fifth walls broken. Cool mechanic, challenging gameplay and never takes itself too seriously, very cool.

dannyk1994 2021-10-06 10:42

For a jam made game this is gold. It has a great story, its funny and the mechanics are easy to pick up. I think the storyline is actually ideal for a jam game. Playthrough took me 10 minutes which were very enjoyable, the game has plenty of scope to be expanded well done :) Only thing I struggled a little with was how fast the words went in the fast battles, its was very hard on the eyes and I had to look away sometime as it was difficult to stare at for too long. I also did discover a bug that kind of exploits the game, which I am not sure if I wanna mention in the comments, it pretty much lets you win every battle. Highly rated this game! And let me know if want to know the bug :v:

bluishgreenpro 2021-10-06 14:27

Lots of fun, glad I got to contribute to the canonical pronunciation of "Gteve" :)

lunacyecho 2021-10-06 18:33

thanks so much for your comments, everyone!! we promise we read every one of these and absolutely value the feedback.

@zvyaga glad you noticed the guitar hero similarities! the rock band series was by far my favorite game series growing up, and i've been wanting to do a rhythm game for a while. this game isn't really that (we tried seeing if we could line up the words to the beat but that was a bit too hard to do in the time frame), but i'm glad that hints of it are visible.

@vitor-milioni thanks so much for your enthusiasm! i believe the notebook scroller was pushed by arch, giving him the broadest skillset represented by any of us, i think. i also definitely agree with you on 'cry'—we ran out of time to balance it as an actual feature, so now it's just some nihilistic statement about the futility of coping mechanisms or something idk

@wedgiebee "reading is fun" wow i can't believe we made an educational game !! but nah we appreciate that you found it a novel mechanic. arch was the guy who balanced and unique-ified the various fights, so i'm glad the differences made an impact for you!

@squigglez LMAO ok as a small point of clarification. our original placeholder submission from back before we had decided on an idea was called "literally just undertale" because that had been our guiding philosophy for past lds. but we only realized *after* ld was over that, while you can change a game's title, you can't change its url. i'm glad elements of it showed through though!

@gryhyphen thanks for pointing that bug out to us! we're working on seeing how to fix that up.

@dannyk1994 whoaa that sounds like a serious bug. feel free to post it in the comments! or, if you'd rather it stay secret, here's a google form you can note it down in too: https://forms.gle/N2HGQ2itMLM8cRjH6. thanks for playing!

@bluishgreenpro many thanks! [ʔtʰiːv] is official, accept no substitutes

dannyk1994 2021-10-06 21:14

@lunacyecho Well essentially if you die in battle and you click cry it just completes the battle and you win every time lol

lunacyecho 2021-10-06 21:26

@dannyk1994 thanks for bringing that to our attention—we'll work on figuring that out, and i'm glad it at least didn't seem to impact your game experience that much!

exilegl 2021-10-06 23:40

First off, great job with the humor of course - love it :D And an insult based combat system? Great unique approach. And the small details are nice (like there being food in the recycling bins for you to regain your health). Art is awesome too, and I love the upbeat music. Idk that I really have much in the way of criticism tbh (although a walking animation for your character would be a good addition, also noticed the RIP gravestones render on top of the character which is a bit strange) - but yeah, it's an all around great entry and a cool little world you've built :)

randomphantom 2021-10-07 12:26

Very ambitious to take on a jrpg style gameplay in a jam and the insult mechanic is hilarious. Nice graphics although I wish the player could have some walking animations. Great audio work especially during battles. Not sure whats the ending goal too as it seems that you get stuck and unable to progress to the end.

lunacyecho 2021-10-07 15:47

@randomphantom thanks for trying out our game! may i ask where you got stuck? there are a few points we're aware of that have the capacity to accidentally softlock a player, but the game itself should in theory be fully playable in terms of progression through interacting with things. let us know!

randomphantom 2021-10-07 16:29

I think I fought the principal, the student files, something that give various numbers, and may have died or something.

lunacyecho 2021-10-07 16:40

@randomphantom gotcha. the next fight to do in the basic progression of the game should be the school doors at the top of the map--is that what was tripping you up? i get that it might be unintuitive at first to want to fight inanimate objects!

earthensky 2021-10-08 03:01

I love how the game manages difficulty in a way that makes it sometimes easy and sometimes quite challenging. I also like that the level design shows all the doors before the keys, which makes it easy to connect the dots without much instruction. This is my favourite game from a jam in a long time!

kwiper 2021-10-08 04:45

Hot damn, this is incredible! Such a unique way to show turn-based combat that's also thematically sound. Art style and music are top notch. I can't believe you guys managed to get this in 72 hours, this is incredible work. All it really needs is a bit of polish here and there in terms of animations, hitboxes, etc. but the combat could totally be expanded to a full game if you guys wanted to.

aprioriface 2021-10-08 21:17

Good game! Thr great humor - hp regenerator in recycle bin. But gameplay became a little bit boring after the second fight IMHO

const-arch 2021-10-09 00:45

@randomphantom Sorry about that, I figured out what bug you ran into and fixed it. There's a second half to the game that never triggered for you, unfortunately.

dragonsheep 2021-10-10 02:38

Good humor, and a fairly fun core mechanic.

angela-he 2021-10-11 21:02

lmao the music and THE DIALOGUE

The fact that like EDM chillstep (?) is playing in the background is soooo funny to me - I mean, it's good EDM, don't get me wrong, I've just never seen a JRPG with EDM before. And the battle music - it's super good, period. And the final song with the school bell and the guitar is sooooo lit.

the insult minigame is genuinely so fun, and at the perfect difficulty level. it's kind of like a mix of.... guitar hero and danganronpa class trials? Actually, I have no idea how to describe it - it felt pretty original, which I love!

i feel like y'all must've built off some engine or existing code because there's a lot of JRPG features (tool tips, dialogue system, battle system, health system, good player and camera movement) in addition to a ton of content, so much so that i can't imagine y'all could've coded all that in 3 days - it's really awesome! it legit feels like an RPG vs a jam game because f that.

the writing is SO FUNNY. the low effort grammar makes things x1000 funnier. "Image Not Found" has been found - I don't even know what to say 💀 the fact that you can regain health by eating from the trash 💀 i can't imagine what the dev process for the story must've been - y'all must've been laughing your asses off making it.

some critique:

it'd be nice to be able to select buttons like Insult / Cry via keyboard since every other control is through keyboard too

it'd also be cool to have a tutorial for how the battle mechanics like insulting work - i failed the first time when insulting the teacher because I didn't know what to do - definitely out of scope for a game jam, but maybe for the future!

the dialogue boops when students talk feels like it's scraping my ears which makes for an unpleasant experience

at one point a possible insult is "you're more out of place than gteve" - I got confused what that meant because I hadn't talked to Gteve yet - maybe that should only be shown if you've talked to Gteve.

anyways this is SUCH a great entry. This is just such a trollish game and I love it. If you continue it I'm sure it'll get more plays than zero three weeks from now 💀 I'd def it again!

rookrules 2021-10-11 21:49

LITERALLY just UNDERTALE.... but BETTER

nomus 2021-10-17 19:44

So fun to play everything was well done and it was even a bit challenging to complete. I would have loved a fast bpm music for the two last fights but the sound design was really good, Nice little game !

lunacyecho 2021-10-21 10:59

@aprioriface thanks for playing! yeah, if we had time we'd have loved to spice up the combat with some more features (so many variables to manipulate in that interface!) maybe if we expand this tho.... :eyes:

@angela-he WOW thanks for the incredible feedback!! tbh the edm chillstep bgm was ~~entirely inspired by deltarune~~ a result of miyo, our regular composer, giving me very specific and helpful directions on how to evoke the vibe of a high school jrpg, then me ignoring them completely because i had a catchy melody i wanted to plonk down.

also, we (and by we i mean just fawnblue, johnfn, and arch) were using godot to build this, and i'm decently sure that a lot of the architecture was custom-made for the game? they're all SO talented!! like, we came up with the battle system on like midday sunday and by 5 pm fawn and arch were like "cool so battles are working now, what next". it's v possible i'm wrong on this hehe but wtv imma hype them up bc they deserve it!!

ALSO also thanks for appreciating the dialogue! a fun game imo is to try and figure out which lines of text are placeholder lines that made it into the final cut because ~~we ran out of time~~ we carefully and meticulously pondered their worth and thought they would be funny. there's at least 5!

@nomus ooo the two last fights *should* have had the boss music playing (i.e. the same music that plays when you fight principal pike)! i wonder if that's still working or if there's a bug—thanks for bringing that to our attention.

@rookrules FINALLY someone reads the url and is able to judge our game as it was always meant to be judged!!!!

kiwi663 2021-10-21 14:13

Interesting concept, nice

stending 2021-10-21 18:42

What a crazy game! The dialogues are so funny! Really REALLY loved that ending and those final bosses!

The only _really little negative point_ was the texts were really hard to read in the fast fights, it gave me a bit of a headache!

But it's really nothing compared to the overall quality of the game! You got a full 5/5 from me guys, would love to see your next game next LDs!

2022-09-13 13:06

Wow, very cool game about school. All kids need a good education. Nowadays children are very fond of playing games and they have little time to study. My son plays a lot and often does not have time to do his homework. I started looking for help on the Internet and found a great educational resource, you can look at [paper help reviews](https://www.abc15.com/sponsor-generated-content/8-best-essay-writing-services-top-college-paper-sites-in-2022). Thanks to these guys my child began to get only better grades and he has the ability to spend more time on his favorite activities.

2022-12-22 03:07

I absolutely detest writing, thus I always require assistance with it in my studies. I've never produced quality essays or articles, and I believe this is because I didn't devote enough time to honing my writing abilities in the past. I've been turning to article [essayshark.com](https://essayshark.com/) for a while now. They always give me well-written papers and work. They constantly assist me, even when I ask them to write in brief.
