Super cool concept, really fun to play!
I like the unique idea of "racing your past self." The gameplay is nice and smooth too. I like the attention to detail for the quick turn-around jam such as the stands with spectators.
The track crossing itself was a great idea! I've never had so much fun racing against myself.
I like how chaotic the game becomes after some loops :)
Love this idea. Well done.
Haha after >50 laps its absolute chaos. All these stupid drivers!
Very funny idea! Kudos for the visuals (you even took time to steer the front wheels :D) and also the music!
amazing racing game, but the bot cars are extremely annoying :) nice job. will play again
- took a bit longer then I expected before the track getting messy with cars - the past selves thing work well - could have really used some sound effects for crashing/accelerating/etc.
Really nice idea! Had fun just driving around! The "fighting againts my past run" never felt this pressuring a car game! The only odd thing about is that the car suddenly stops when I let the buttons go, should keep the momentum!
Thanks for all the nice comments!
@adroitconceptions indeed sound effects would have been good but I ran out of time
@matchamaze I think you have a good point about not maintaining the momentum. Car physics can be kind of hard... I also spent a bunch of time trying to get the car to drift but I couldn't quite get it right.
I kinda love it, the whole game feels like a big build up for the eventual huge pile up crash at the junction, you just know it's coming no matter how hard you're trying to avoid it, kept a smile on my face as I kept playing
@shp Yeah! It can also be fun to watch the pileup for a while since more and more cars keep coming. Especially fun if your car does a flip or something.
super fun game, and feels smooth. love how crazy it gets as time goes on, but makes me realise I'm such a bad driver.
Was more fun that i expected after going one lap. Hey! Theres another car, and another.. and another.. oooooh Cool idea :) Was fun seeing a mistake i did the lap before, in a "third person" view driving by
I had a ton of fun on this one, great job! I love the idea (Can I borrow it for my own game? I think it would make for a pretty awesome game mode.).
The only thing that didn't quite feel right was the car physics. It didn't feel very smooth, it was quite rigid and I felt like I was fighting the vehicle. The fun I had avoiding my past selves more than compensated for that though
Great job, this game is one of my favorites so far.
I have to admit I didn't read the description before starting this game, so was really surprised (in a really good way) when I realize what was happening :) Great game and music is nice too, it fits in with the race game theme! And I was expecting that, when you hit your copy, the game would be over. But since that wasn't the case, I was wondering how the game will end (aside from the timer) then I ram into my copy and was turned on my back. Well, this is one way to go, I guess :)
@mvasko2 Haha, be my guest and use the idea, and let me know what you do with it! As for the car physics... yeah, I wasn't quite happy with the physics, but car physics are kind of hard to get right. I might still work on it further and see if I can make it better. You can make the car respond a bit more smoothly with a gamepad, as you have analog control of throttle and steering. Maybe I should have tried to emulate that on the keyboard, but it's always some kind of compromise I guess.
@zimny11 Excellent! I'm glad you got to be surprised. I was almost thinking it would have been fun not to mention how it works so more people would be surprised, but I guess then people might not find it interesting enough to try in the first place.
That was pretty cool! The camera tilting when you turn was a subtle thing that I think helped the game feel more fun and energetic. I didn't love the driving mechanics because the car seems to slow down when you turn, which doesn't feel great in a racing game. I think that adding drifting would be *awesome* here and would make the experience 10x more fun (if you decide to keep working on it).
This is a good base for a game, nice job!
Really cool game.
That was super fun to play! I wish ldjam.com stored my history of rated games as I've seen very similar game once, implementing same idea with colliding into your own ghosts on looped track. But your entry has greater chance of collision, turning racing loop into some kind of a busy highway :) Well done!
PS scored 40 loops :)
UPD: nice game name by the way!
This game was so much fun. Laughed a few times when i saw my own mistakes repeating themselves in front of me. Some polish on the graphics music would ehance this great game idea
@bootak Thanks! I think you can view your rated games per event here: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/47/my/grades (that's for LD47. change the number to see older ones)
@pekuja oh, thank you! I was talking about this game https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/47/racecar-racecar
It's funny how you both implemented basically the same idea, with slightly different mechanics. I feel it's actually more fun to play your version with more ghosts and shorter track.
What a fun game! I think this is the first compo game in 3d that actually looks quite finished.
Nice idea but same problems that I had, when tried to develop my first rally game with Unity. Famous Unity physics Kappa.
Really well done! Quite fun. Love it at the end when the trucks keep piling into each other! Out of all I've tried my current favorite.
Realyl cool seeing all of my mistakes getting in my way of my future laps. Really cool entry, and a lot of fun getting stuck in that time loop. Nice job!
That was really fun, I kept getting annoyed at crashes and then realising it was entirely my fault. Audio suited and just think while really simple visually it worked pretty well
This was a great idea, I really enjoyed watching it build up and become chaotice. Great idea and well executed! good job!
Great job, this is super fun to play. If only my past selves weren't driving like idiots
Nice game! The driving physics is pretty good in your game, I like it. Also the idea is really great :-)
Nice recording system, and i ran okay even after some laps!
The idea was good, and it was pretty fun to play.
Great fun! If only the "other" drivers on the track weren't driving like idiots :)
The controls respond in just the right way, the music kept me motivated, and the graphics are decent. This is a good game, well done!
Had a lot of fun with this one. Though apparently my former self is a terrible driver!
43 flags was my best. I loved how hectic some of the intersections got, like this: https://imgur.com/hkXfTyG
It was a very cool idea that played out well. I also liked the controls on the car.. It's always tricky to get a WASD car feeling good because I want to steer at different angles at different times, and while I also felt that stiffness in this game, you had a good match between the turns the track asked of me and the turns the controls gave me. Nice tuning.
The car-on-car collisions were also tuned well. When I hit ... myself ... it was bad but not instantly game-ending. It was in a nice sweet spot of setback. The edge of the track was a little more brutal, and I lost all of my games the same way: clipped the edge of the track with the front of my car and got spun around backwards, then couldn't get righted in time.
But I'm split on it -- on the one hand, if the game was a little more generous with edge-collisions and had some way to build back up lost time, I could get further into the game and have some REALLY crazy car-filled tracks. But on the other hand, the difficulty felt good and forced me to concentrate on driving well, with a good level of punishment when I didn't.
Overall really enjoyed it, nice work!
EDIT: check it out, while I was tying, left the game running and then this happened: https://imgur.com/MYCyKtw
@pkenney Thanks for the feedback!
Indeed the difficulty tuning can be a bit of a balancing act, and I think also I wouldn't have wanted the game to keep going too long, because it would likely get boring. Of course if I were to make a more fully realized version with more features, maybe I could find ways to keep it interesting, but I feel like for this 48h version the length of a game feels pretty good, though I may have tuned it a bit too hard just because I myself got too good at it since I played it all weekend.
Love that tower of cars.
Unexpectedly fun!! After some laps it really starts to get you going, haha.
