This game is the best game i have seen so far!Good job!

oldknivestale 2020-04-21 10:11

Beautiful game! I struggled a bit with parts where you had to drop down (which seemed like a lot of the early game) as I couldn't see what was below due to the camera height.

arbex 2020-04-21 10:14

one of the bests!

benji-kershenbaum 2020-04-21 10:17

Wow really nice looking game!

baptiste-guerin 2020-04-21 10:23

Really cool game with amazing gaphics!!!!

sir-needleworth 2020-04-21 10:31

I'm totally amazed by the way that, in that amount of time, you created such a beautiful game with a storyline and all. Really nice job !

nek 2020-04-21 10:56

Love the art, got some serious amanita vibes but the movement and collisions were extremely frustrating.

pushkan 2020-04-21 11:16

Good music, good art, but i dont understand goal of this game. Hard to play, if u dont know, what u need to doing.

optimans 2020-04-21 11:47

A really soothing experience! The drawing and music are a perfect fit

shp 2020-04-21 14:06

Awesome presentation, platforming/controls need a bit of work

oneils 2020-04-21 21:27

Great graphics! The movement feels still a bit spongy.

draelent 2020-04-21 22:02

Lovely game. The attack range seem pretty small in comparison to the size of the enemies, but it is sufficient in fact. Music and Art were gorgeous, the story is there and complete, with the ending, and going through the levels does not seem obvious at first but you end up finding your way through them. Sometimes you don't know if you are falling to your death or to the rest of the level.. Great work

sheepolution 2020-04-21 23:15

It's cool that you made such a big game, but what happens, in game jams that is, is that because of that the game ends up being unpolished. That seems to be the case here as well. The movement and fighting is all very awkward. Sometimes I get stuck on a wall and need to restart the game. Of course the art is amazing, and the music was nice as well. So good job, but I prefer a short solid game rather than a long broken one.

niceden 2020-04-22 02:02

looks fantastic !

nablaz 2020-04-22 02:14

Thank you all for the kind and encouraging feedback you have given us, we really value the time you took to check out our game! It's awesome to hear that our efforts were appreciated by the community!

@pushkan I understand where you're coming from, the information given at the start of the game is probably less than optimal. We might have relied too much on intuition and the info we gave in the game description...

@oldknivestale @nek @shp @oneils Some movement/platforming elements could have been better and we are aware of that. We wanted to improve them, but time ran short and we prioritized having enough content, a comlpete storyline and a fully functional game/experience... Which leads to:

@sheepolution I sincerely respect your opinion and agree with you that we could have improved polishing and fixed some minor glitches/bugs that are in the build (I encountered the same one you did, as well as a few others). We will likely upload a patch that fixes those in the next few days, if you are interested in checking it out!

All in all, we are really proud of what we accomplished in these 72 hours of hard work.

By the way, if anyone is interested in trying to find it, we also hid an easter egg in the build... Beware, you may need to learn how to ride flies in order to find it!

yoan-allibert 2020-04-22 11:01

It looks beautiful! great atmosphere, nice music and sound. controls are a little awkward. I arrived at the end without realising I could attack : ) Great work overall

nablaz 2020-04-22 11:23

@yoan-allibert We appreciate your good comments! Just out of curiosity, how did you beat the various bosses without attacking them? Or, do you mean you got to the first boss without attacking and only understood you could do it there? I'm asking because I didn't think there was a way to get to the end of the game without actually attacking... Anyway, there are pop-ups in game to remind you of the controls, but I think their text is too small and easily overlooked... Thank you for your feedback!

fpeg 2020-04-22 12:26

Very beautiful! The art is way over the top for a game jam, and the atmospheric music and sounds are great too! Hade a lot of fun, and was very impressed by the character designs (the snail, loved it!), the fact that I had already read about it at a signpost before I actually faced it made it even cooler, it clearly lived up to my expectations ^^

Now, I will admit not seeing this through to the end, and what got me was the double jump. While my life felt wonderful for a while after I got the double jump I soon got frustrated by how inconsistent it was. I was never sure where I could actually go with it or not, especially that part where you have to jump from climbing.

Sure needs a good amount of polish to feel like a complete game, but to think you made it in less than 72 hours? Well, that simly amazing!

blobross 2020-04-22 12:29

This is the best game i have seen by far, the art is just incredible!

bgamedev 2020-04-22 12:31

Excellent work, graphic is more than very nice.

yoan-allibert 2020-04-22 12:36

Yes I meant up to the first boss, then I killed everything that crossed my path :p Also I did found the easter egg

codingninjajoas 2020-04-22 12:37

This game has great artwork, it is incredible.

griffin76 2020-04-22 12:43

Nice music and arts! I was stuck after defeating the boss and unlocking the double jump. Where must I go to continue ?

plagueofminds 2020-04-22 12:46

The game looks incredible, and the platforming was fun. I couldn't finish the game because when I respawned, I got stuck in the floor and couldn't move. I tried jumping, attacking, and the arrows but nothing worked. Great game overall though, and your team has a lot of talent.

thecze 2020-04-22 12:49

Beautiful graphics!

plantprogrammer 2020-04-22 12:53

This game looks beautiful. I didn't have a lot of fun playing it, because I just don't like / understand platformers, but I'd like to thank you for the calm and relaxing mood this game conveyed <3

I would love to see this more as a narrative driven game, getting rid of all fights and making compelling story points to discover instead. While boss figths could be envisioned as the need to trick them into hurting/fighting themselves instead of attacking.

rongefilet 2020-04-22 12:56

Most gorgeous and nice sounding game I've played so far. (I've experienced some issues while playing like being stuck at respawn or on geometry but I played it on linux through Wine so maybe that's the cause) While the art is charming I thought the physics were clunky, the physics feels strange and the minimum distance you walk when you move had me falling into spikes while just trying to align me with the save point. Anyway great entry!

khud0 2020-04-22 12:59

I normally don't download ludum dare games and only play HTML ones, but this one really caught my eye with its awesome art. The game is incredible in its art, atmosphere and music but realistically it truly lacks on the programming and VFX parts. I could get stuck in enemies, attacks didn't seem to work as intended and certain layers seemed to be in wrong places. However, it's still a very solid entry with nice story and visuals! :)

madewink 2020-04-22 13:01

Lovely game :purple_heart: ! It was a bit hard to see what was further, and I fell in spikes a few time because of that. Also, careful : you can re-enter the snail room, but the snail won't be there, so it's a soft lock (the lifebar did not seem to diminish, it was flickering around the current value). Anyway, I loved the atmosphere, the music and graphics, and enjoyed playing your game.

nablaz 2020-04-22 13:10

Again, thanks to everybody for the great comments and feedback, as well as for the construcive criticism! Our team's artists are especially delighted that their work has been praised so much!

@yoan-allibert Nice! You are probably the first one to find it! Thank you for playing and enjoying the game.

@griffin76 You have to go backwards through the level (up) until the very beginning, where you'll find a place in which the double jump allows you to progress forwards. Thank you for the commitment to finish the game!

@plagueofminds @rongefilet Thank you for the feedback and appreciation! If you have the time, could you signal us where exactly you got stuck? We want to release a patch that fixes bugs we encountered and these ones seem to be high priority, as they might prevent players from being able to actually complete the game...

@plantprogrammer We will definitely keep your well-thought suggestions in mind if we decide to continue working on this project!

@madewink We are aware of that issue and will soon fix it. Thank you for reporting it!

Cheers

morg 2020-04-22 13:26

@khud0 Thanks for the feedback and for putting up with our desktop version! :) I'm planning to maybe have it run in the unity player in the web, but I need to do some testing for bugs since we didn't really try it over there at all and there some weird(er) glitches (like the UI is vibrating lol).

makse 2020-04-22 14:31

Really nice and beautiful!!

fabrizio-spadaro 2020-04-22 15:29

Nice, got some ori vibes here :D I feel like you should guide the player more around the world for example with some props pointing the direction to follow, the movement also seems to fast I would decrease the drag of the player. Overal good job and awesome graphic, fun experience.

morg 2020-04-22 15:56

Just a FYI to everyone, we just released a new version (1.1) with a lot of bugfixes. If you were impacted by player getting stuck in walls, game softlocking, and other minor annoyances, and could not experience the full game until the end, maybe give it another go now? <3

red-ash 2020-04-22 16:05

Art & Sound are really amazing !! The level design is really interesting (but I have to admit that the last double-jump is a bit too hard... I couldn't do it in time :/) And I couldn't save on the first two checkpoints once we unlocked the double jump (a bug ?), which was kinda frustrating :joy: Anyway, great game overall :D (We played on version 1.1 if that can help you with the bug)

dangerblack 2020-04-22 17:20

@red-ash that bug killed me so much, I named the checkpoint with the wrong number and brings you back to the wrong checkpoint.

suchista 2020-04-22 17:41

It looks and sounds lovely, the created atmosphere is amazing! The snail boss was so easy, haha, I just needed to stay in one place and repeat attack. I got stuck after going to the "double jump" spot, I was probably doing something wrong. The controls felt wonky and the informational texts were a bit buggy, sometimes they stayed for a long time and even overlapped. It was a pleasant experience overall :)

jvdwijk 2020-04-22 19:14

The game looked pretty good! I especially liked the character's animations ^^ the movement worked well but the game could do with a bit more feedback and explenations since I wasnt sure what to do at some points.

docgeraud 2020-04-23 09:34

Beautiful game in such a short amount of time, well done! I love the ambiance. I think the platforming is a bit too slippery and could benefit from a bit more gravity. Also the combat might be too simple. But it's still impressive that you manage to do that during a jam

odeyalko 2020-04-23 09:51

Cool Game!

snowirbis 2020-04-23 09:53

Beautiful game ! There are some issues, like after defeating the snail once, I couldn't exit the level because the "gate" disappeared.

The air control is hard, but the major thing you should improve IMO is the feedback you give to the player.

When I hit an enemy, I like when there are visual effects, animations, sounds, and when we kill a "big" enemy and it is just deleted it feels kinda weird.

shess 2020-04-23 10:38

I've played a newer version of the game, so I perhaps didn't see many of the bugs mentioned here, but the game seemed pretty solid and smooth to me. And I know this is nothing new, you must've heard it dozens of times already, but: the art it OUTSTANDING. No, really. This isn't even jam level, I'd LOVE to buy a game like this on steam. Please keep making awesome games like this!

belowzerogames 2020-04-24 00:43

Very nice game , graphics were beautiful game play was smooth. Awesome job

mulberg 2020-04-24 02:30

The aesthetics and music is wonderful!

I played the new version, but I still saw some bugs (e.g. I found a platform that had an invisible wall) The font size was also too small for a full screen high resolution monitor. Lastly, there were too many "leap of faith" moments, were you have to jump into unknown. I undrstand that cameras are hard - my game suffers from the same issue. Capture.PNG

daniel-moreno 2020-04-24 08:18

I completely love the art, really aesthetically pleasing! I played the newer version, as I guess it is a bug fixing version, so I didn't get into many bugs as others said (good job on working on a post-LD version so fast, by the way!).

I played the Mac version, and I'm afraid the music & sfx were not playing, I didn't hear anything. I had the same problem as @mulberg, the font was small (dunno if it has to do with the Retina display?), but besides that, you guys did a really good job overall.

nablaz 2020-04-24 09:56

To everybody: thank you all so much for playing "Tale of a Little Guardian" and for the generous comments you have left us! We are very pleased that you enjoyed our game!

@suchista @jvdwijk @docgeraud @snowirbis We are aware that there still are some bugs/glitches in the game and that some platforming elements could be improved, we will try to fix these issues in upcoming versions... Also, yes, some better guidance and feedback for the player is definitely in the cards for the future!

@shess Thank you so much for your comment! It really is heartwarming to hear that you liked the game so much! Plus, hearing it directly from Commander Shepard takes the appreciation to a whole other level (big Mass Effect fan here). ;)

@mulberg Thank you for the feedback and for taking the time to post pictures detailing the issues you encountered! As for the info text, it currently doesn't scale properly with screen size and resolution... I also think it should be slightly larger to start with! I have a 4k screen and it is basically unreadable for me, so I definitely agree with you on this... We will fix it asap!

@daniel-moreno I'm sorry that the Mac build didn't let you hear the music... I don't know what went wrong there! I might be a little biased on this, as sound design and music were my main contributions to the project, but I think the audio helps setting the mood for the scenes and improves the overall game experience... But, thank you for enjoying the game anyway!

Cheers!

tadej 2020-04-24 13:27

It could just be me, but I really don't like the attack being mapped to "Z". A lot of games do it that way and I don't really see why. I don't find it particularly convinient for either layout(qwerty/qwertz). Wouldn't it be better to have it on CTRL or somwhere near the wasd (Q or E). Feel free to prove me wrong :).

Other than that I really like the game. The art looks amazing, both background and charcter design! The sound design was great as well. Really nice entry overall .

anarchoapathy 2020-04-24 15:46

Impressive amount of production for the short timeframe! I'd love to see an expanded version with multiple environments

brylamare 2020-04-25 08:06

Liked the looks of this game a lot, played really well too. There were somethings that could use a little polish but that is to be expected with all Ludum Dare games. I did notice that to double jump you have to jump, then hit space 2 more times while in air to double jump. Not sure if that was a bug or how that was intended to work. Anyways great game!

morriekken 2020-04-25 11:36

It's really beautiful game. I like graphics a lot and sound with music are very atmospheric. Considering timeframe it's a lot of game, which is impressive.

I had few challenges when I played: - Texts disappear too quickly, I had to read everything twice - Jumping and landing seems to be pixel perfect which leads to frustration - Save game thingy supposed to restore tree life, but it didn't do anything except of saving - Monsters are too easy to jump over, you could even take a ride on fly - not sure if this was intentional - Hints were too small, even when I switched to full hd - When I was reading scraps of the story on "road signs", tree life was running out which forced me to omit history whatsoever

Rafal from 4Boa Team

nablaz 2020-04-25 13:57

@tadej Do you play with your left hand only? If so, I would agree that the controls are not the most convenient... What I generally do, with this type of control layout, is to use my right hand on the arrow keys and my left hand on SPACE, Z and X. ;)

@brylamare If you jump from a platform and press jump again while in mid-air, it should perform a double jump. Keeping the SPACE bar pressed should also perform a double jump, at least it did for me!

@morriekken Thank you very much for the detailed feedback! I agree with you on the text, we should have conceived it differently... Initially it was supposed to be just a few words so it worked fine, but we then created a short storyline and did not change the text interaction mechanic for lack of time. On the checkpoint roots, you should keep pressing UP to refill the Spirit's life energy... If not, you save your progress but only transfer a minimal amount of energy to the tree. As for the basic enemies, we didn't want them to be too challenging, so that players could axctually skip the combat if they wanted to. This, however, might be something to revise in future versions of the game, if we decide to keep working on it. Plus, riding flies is fun! In fact, it's the only way to find a small easter egg we hid in the game... :)

Cheers!

turritom 2020-04-25 14:31

beautiful graphics and mood for this short time. congratulations.

tadej 2020-04-25 15:05

@nablaz I used left hand for movement (wasd, space) and right hand for attack and interaction (z and up, also I'm on a qwertz keyboard, so the layout is a bit different). If attack is on CTRL you can use either hand to trigger it which is... handy :P. This is not a big criticism and the game is perfectly playable the way it is, I'm just wondering why Z is often used as the attack button when you consider the difference in qwertz/qwerty keyboard layouts.

nablaz 2020-04-25 15:15

@tadej Ah, ok, I get you now! Thinking of it, what you suggest makes perfect sense... We just sticked to the tried-and-true formula for this jam, but will consider a change (or to give both options) in the future!

johnnysix 2020-04-28 22:51

The art , music and overall story are fanastically done, this could definitely have a lot of development beyond the Jam. I was unable to complete as there were certain parts I couldn't reach by jumping it seemed ( some checkpoints / jumps ) . If you were able to build this much in just three days, a couple of months working on it could really be something.
