Not able to play right now but I just had to mention the art looks completely stunning

neverix 2019-10-07 12:38

The art (especially the cover) looks amazing. Unfortunately, Wine just displays a black screen.

whycardboard 2019-10-07 14:03

@neverix so sorry to hear that! i’ll try to get some mac/linux versions out later, but gamemaker has not been cooperating. thanks!

neverix 2019-10-07 15:11

@matthew-hrehirchuk yeah I totally understand

retrobarbare 2019-10-07 17:13

This game look and feel amazing.

The game is very stressfull when you see the dark cloud coming , very great game

whycardboard 2019-10-07 18:49

@retrobarbare thank you so much for your feedback! great to know you enjoy the game!

arbe 2019-10-07 21:25

Really liked the juxtaposition of the game switching between monotonous, simple actions and a stressful race against the storm. As everyone else has already said, the graphics are amazing. Really like the style and the mood, too. The only two faults I can really point out are: - For the first minute I was kind of confused as to what I was supposed to be doing. - The game seems to lack an ending. Or, if it does have one, it didn't load for me. Overall, I liked the game, the concept's neat, but I think you may have spent too much time on the graphics

whycardboard 2019-10-08 18:54

@nerdysl0th thanks for the feedback! the game most definitely needed some more background information, giving you more guidance in what to start doing. As for the ending, we had this elaborate idea and an interesting story, but it didn't pan out the way we thought. that is ludum dare after all! thanks for playing!

akusan 2019-10-08 22:42

Really set the mood there. Starting with apocalyptic setting is good use of theme. Good music too and nice pixel art.

thatmalzan 2019-10-09 06:42

What you have achieved on a weekend is so inspiring. I hope more people get to see this.

marco-marchitelli 2019-10-09 14:58

I heard the sandstorm my dude. Great animations and attention to details. Great job man.

quantumsno 2019-10-09 15:25

I love the graphics man, and the music design, OOO it hits all the marks it needs to. If I had any comments, I would say maybe make it so that you can hold down the 'collect' button on the trash instead of pressing it each search.

sauerkraut 2019-10-09 15:26

Love the apocalyptic setting and the graphics. Would love to see the game expanded into a full game.

technsmile 2019-10-09 15:30

The best aesthetics I've seen so far!! I felt so much alone in an post-apocalyptic desert! It's maybe the reason I'm so frustrated as I dont find the gameplay very interesting. Nonetheless, a pretty solid game overall and a really good entry.

under-the-weather 2019-10-09 17:53

Thank you everyone for the amazing comments! We deeply appreciate the feedback and suggestions :)

antoined73 2019-10-09 18:05

Really moody game with a nice atmosphere ! Just wish it was longer with more things to do

krakadushka 2019-10-09 20:21

Awesome! Really nice atmosphere game. Nice job

whycardboard 2019-10-09 23:32

@quantumsno thanks for the feedback! i do agree that the collecting items mechanic could be streamlined a bit, but maybe adding another intricacy, instead of holding down to get items. like a meter you need to keep above a certain point for long enough. idk, food for thought. anyways, thanks so much for playing!

whycardboard 2019-10-09 23:36

@technsmile so sorry you didn't find the gameplay interesting! when we started, we had a whole list of things to add to keep the player busy, such as traps for lizards and rats you'd need to eat, upgrades for knowing when the storm is approaching, etc, etc... but, as the curse of ludum dare states, you can never finish everything you set out to do. thanks for playing!

mateusboga 2019-10-09 23:37

@technsmile Thanks so much! My objective was really to push myself this LD in terms of graphic design :)

whycardboard 2019-10-09 23:43

@antoined73 i agree, having the game longer would have been great! we went with a more artistic focus, and left the gameplay more or less on the back burner. we could have maybe spaced out the scrap piles more, but that would have been somewhat boring. anyhow, thanks so much for playing and your feedback!

coleslaughter 2019-10-10 00:43

Always look forward to these games, easily some of my favorite looking stuff to come out of LDs. :)

I like this one quite a bit! I would actually get a little anxious whenever I would venture too far away from my tent. I wish there was a way to purposefully search for specific scrap, though. Digging through random scrap piles in hopes of finding what you're looking for is realistic and fits thematically, but it takes away any kind of strategy or player choice, which means the gameplay can't really evolve.

Still, I really really liked this entry. The tone and mood were top-notch, and as always, the visuals were :ok_hand: :ok_hand: :ok_hand:

don-fouts 2019-10-10 00:53

The art in this is amazing, awesome work! I thought some of the noises were a little weird but the ambient music pulled the setting together well. Overall fantastic work.

rubixalchemist 2019-10-10 02:12

Awesome art, love the transition from the poison cloud!

le-don 2019-10-10 10:50

The art and setting are great and I like the kind of simple gameplay - going out and find ressources before the storm comes makes for an interesting loop.

How did you do the purple effect when the cloud arrivess? Did you use another set of sprites or did you use surfaces?

mateusboga 2019-10-10 11:54

@le-don The purple effect was done by swapping all the sprites with purple ones, I had double the work because any sprite I had to do I had to do one in purple as well xD

deepnight 2019-10-10 15:42

The game itself is quite simple but very efficient at setting up a great mood. I really enjoyed the sense of oppression from the approaching storm. I'm not sure if the game crashed or something, but I only got a black screen after the antenna sequence: is it the actual ending? Good job on your game :)

whycardboard 2019-10-10 18:44

@deepnight about that ending... yeah we had a big elaborate plan and then cut it last minute. the black is supposed to be credits but i forgot to implement in the ld version... it happens. anyways, thanks for playing!

saintheiser 2019-10-10 19:20

Nice visuals and moood, but too gameplay is toooo repetative for me.

smileyface 2019-10-10 20:13

I loved the tone and mood of the game a lot. And I loved the idea of the gameplay loop of scavenging items and building your base.....however in execution I felt that the main mechanic of scavenging was just not fun. Had it just been a little quicker or less repetitive I would have liked it a lot more. Regardless I still think the game is excellent in tone and atmosphere.

fatsheep 2019-10-10 20:31

Loved the graphics and the music (sandstorm lol). The animations were great too and i would love to see more of this.

baktillus 2019-10-10 21:02

Lovely graphics and general mood! Loved the calm gameplay (and the first rush through the storm when I had to learn that pink clouds are not for breathing) but i kind of wish there was something more to do while waiting for the storm to pass. If you expand on the game I'd love a crafting minigame or maybe some other problem to solve.

One of my favourites so far!

death-is-cold 2019-10-10 23:48

Very impressive, loved the character design and artwork. great work!

plepletier 2019-10-11 02:16

Great art man!!!!! The game is so beautiful! Amazin pixel art. In the final, when i build the sat, the cam ups and the screen stay black. The final is it? Anyway the game is amazing! I really want to play more. Good job!

under-the-weather 2019-10-12 00:42

Congrats @fatsheep, you are the first person to find my little easter egg! You win a firm handshake and a pat on the back!

nightvision65 2019-10-12 13:00

Great art and audio! I'm so unlucky that I searched almost all the rubbish in the map to finish the game XD.

shabbyrtist 2019-10-12 16:42

QIP Shot - Screen 136.png

All very well. The storm in the background is beautiful, but interferes with the gameplay. Because of this storm, you know when to run away, there is no danger. It would be cool to add something to the shelter, because just standing around and waiting isn't fun.

mateusboga 2019-10-12 17:03

@shabbyrtist Thanks! Yea I know the storm is weird right now, the plan was to make it arrive a lot sooner and give just a few seconds for the player to run but unfortunately that was not how it resulted. We also didn't think much about other shelter funcionalities since we had no time for that.

zubspace 2019-10-12 19:15

The setting is really nice. I love the vivid colors and the oncoming storm. Unfortunately the gameplay is a bit shallow. Nice entry anyway!

ancient-pixel 2019-10-13 18:11

Looks and sounds amazing, bit short but really atmospheric.

oillen 2019-10-13 20:16

wow, thought I wouldn't made it till the end, but it worked out in the end - cool game and I am glad there are people out who use GM. It also fitted the theme night is coming - was this your secret favorite? ;)

jin9310 2019-10-15 19:25

Really nice mood you were able to set up along with nice apo scene. Really good job on your entry, nice to see such games. Thanks for this!

pestodesign 2019-10-18 16:09

Great mood and I love the animation while he walks in the purple haze! And a plus point that you made it in GMS2, I love game maker! Is there anything after the antenna, or that is the end?

johnnysix 2019-10-21 21:14

Great art, and love the colour transitions for the storm.

Could be fun with more elements added, and maybe the storm deposits new junk as it passes ( I may do already but I didn't notice? )

Keep making more of this, it's quite unique!

And what is the song in the shelter a spoof of? Sounds like Faithless or something , can't pin it!

ld45_db-070.jpg

under-the-weather 2019-10-22 17:30

@johnnysix It was composed with the same progressions as Darude's Sandstorm, so yeah

johnnysix 2019-10-22 19:41

Ahhhhh. Nice Haha. Impossible to search song with no lyrics.

Maybe include a tribute to this tribute in your expanded universe!
