Cool and nice game!!!
Pretty interesting idea, and the game is pretty fun sometimes)
Awesome game!!! It's very funny and the music is so cool!!
Not sure I understood the book values, but looked like the lighter brown wasn't as good.
I really like the idea of a game about collecting rare books. The mechanics are pretty thin, but it's fun to read the titles at the end of the game.
The overall presentation is nice (I have a soft spot for the music here), but without that timer or 'next' button, there really can't be _any_ strategy, or much of anything at all.
There's just not a lot I can say about this one. The titles are funny? ('A Guiding Write', 'Heroes of Flight an Panic' indeed.)
Props for including options to toggle music and SFX (separately even), though!
@aret24 @erendelous @pedro-m-marangon Thanks!
@pomb I thought about putting a tooltip indicator giving you a sense of how valuable your choices were but I settled on just color coding them for the sake of time. The brown ones are the cheapest and have the smallest random price range, the blue ones are expensive and have a more consistent random price range, and the green ones have a price range that varies wildly. Thanks for the feedback!
@mrjorts I really enjoyed the idea myself too! I really wanted to have it be more more action based with your choices but alas the time constraint. Thanks for the comment!
@remco Yea, I wish I had time to add those two features in. I always seem to go with the randomization of silly names to put more amusement into the game and counter-balance the "just clicking on stuff" vibe. Thanks for your feedback!
A very neat little experience! I liked some of the titles for the "Magic" books  My favorite after playing a few times was "Top 10: Anime Battles" Very well done
That was pretty cool, I don't think I ever played a game like this before, although I love to discover how rare items are when playing RPGs. I guess I wasn't sure if there was any value in taking some of the cheap books? I ended up taking blues and greens most of the time to get the best high scores and it usually worked even through a couple of run throughs. I really loved some of the book titles.
I feel like this could have been much more with a bit more time! Good job
you have the basis of a cool idea, some of the titles are very funny. I think it needs a couple more mechanics, like maybe a chance to fail stealing a book or somthing, maybe a timer I dont know. Nice music :)
I thought I was the only one who made a book game! Luckily, you can never have too much room for books.
I couldn't think books are cute before playing this game. But, it would be better if I can sell the books I choose, and also pick some books, not all books! If I can see the name of books, then it would be nicer! By the way, nice music!
Would love to play. Any chance of a Web build? (Can upload to Game Jolt or Itch.io)
@sokuaisushi Thanks!
@karlipoppins Unfortunately with the randomness it's almost impossible to get enough cheap books to have them in the Top 3. They were meant as a way to slow you down but I didn't get around to adding the timer. Thank you so much for your comment!
@dark-roast-studios Yea, more mechanics were planned but alas the time constraint got me. Thank you for the comment!
@caeonosphere Books are amazing! I shall check out your game later, thanks for the comment!
@r3c0d3r If I could have managed to get the timer and shelf respawning mechanic in then it wouldn't have come down to just taking all books. Thanks for the feedback, these are really good ideas!
@gwinnell I just got a web build up. My first time using the new WebGL stuff in Unity, I always had a rough time with it before. If you get a chance to play it let me know what you think!
Seems like there's no strategy or choices in playing on all of the sets of bookshelves until the last (you're forced to take every book), would be nice to be able to skip some, or make some interesting choice - a timer as you mentioned would be good. Or you can only take so many books per shelf (your satchel size), and when the timer runs out, you get the crappy books by default ^_^.
Graphics were nice, the audio was pretty good, liked the music =). Book names were funny too. Played the web build, worked great!
@jimbly Thanks for the feedback! You're right about the strategy, it's all just random in the game's current state. I like your suggestions too, your stash was supposed to be the limiter but I like the idea of a satchel size per bookshelf. Forcing you to take books you don't want at the end of the timer is a funny way of doing that ahaha!
fyi, not easily playable as a colorblind person!
The idea sounds nice, but in its current state a few things seem lacking. For now it's, as you said, purely random. There's no challenge whatsoever. You'd need for example a lot more shelves to choose from, and need maybe something to find out the type of book which takes a bit longer. Currently I'd simply hover the mouse over all books, and then pick the good ones first.
The presentation is ace, just the game needs a bit more added on.
Good music - also liked the falling money effect. The actual gameplay decisions of what books to take I never really figured out. Felt like I take whatever books I have and then I get score calculated for me? Sound effects and music were great.
Hey nice small game ossi, I figured most expensive books in the tutorial and always collected them primarily. Since wiping the books with my mouse allowed me to see all their colors before picking them I could fill up all the best books with the shelf, I wasn't sure if there was a lose scenario or maybe i missed something? The audio was nice and the overall idea was definitely unique. Nicely done!
A good game idea, the music should be improved. The graphics are good. Try our game too, maybe you'll like it)
I don't get it - which books are most valuable? is there some indication?
Seems pretty simplistic to me: just pick the expensive books first, then the niche ones, and finally the cheap ones - this seems the most surefire way to maximize profits with the limited space. As such, there's not much of a game here as the player isn't really thinking much (in the words of Sid Meier: "Games are a series of interesting decisions"). Maybe if books had different thicknesses, then it would start presenting the player with interesting choices: should they go for the thick expensive book, or various cheap or niche and thin books? Which will return the most buck for the space that I have? As such, I found the game to be rather boring, and nothing else really stood out to me.
But still, congrats on finishing the game and entering the Compo for the first time! It's not a bad entry at all, just one that I felt was flawed. Take it as a learning exercise and build up from here!
I love some of these book names! Overall there seemed that RNG was the only thing to determine the quality of books. It may be more engaging if the books were scrolling by and you had to pick up enough before time ran out. I saw you noted about trying to do something with a timer and changing the book selection. Would definitely add some depth to the game. But hey, this is LD. Everyone runs out of time on great ideas.
@endurion For sure, I have a better sense of what to do with the game now. Thanks for your comment!
@candlesan Yea, the total is calculating the total value of all the books you've collected. Thank you for the kind words!
@t8kk There is no lose state, you just try and get the highest price you can. The cheaper books and the swiping to identify the book's value were intentionally there to slow you down but since I couldn't get around to adding the timer it's ultimately pointless. Thank you for your kind words!
@awix Thanks for the comment! I shall try your game later!
@el-metallico The value of the books are decided by color which are shown on the title screen. The prices themselves are a bit randomized and I didn't have enough time to show them as you collect. Thanks for commenting!
@jsmcag You're right, in it's current state the game is pretty thin and entirely random. I like the idea of having book thickness play a part. Great idea! Thanks for the feedback!
@aplite Scrolling books/bookshelves sounds like a great idea, never thought of that! Yes, I wish I had more time to get in the timer at least. Thanks for the feedback!
This was a nice idea, but I really felt it needed a little pressure on the player. I can just mouse over every book and take the best ones. Many times, my stash was too big for the shelf, so I had to load up on cheap books I didn't want just to get more books. This game would be really good with like one or two mechanics more :)
I liked it! The random names are really delightful and made the experience for me. The music is also simple, but very pleasing.
Good job.
I like the concept of this game, but i agree with @incobalt.
For example, to add challenge and offer a real choice to the player, the game could offer the player a number of small shelves of books (the number would be known in advance, but not the content); then, the player should make a selection of what would seem to interest him (in terms of rarity) among the books in the first bookshelf, then move on to the next, and so on, until the last or until his reserve is filled; he should not be able to return to a shelf already visited. It would thus risk either not to completely fill his shelf, or to no longer be able to select books offering a better rarity.
@nick-rafalski I'm glad you liked it, thank you!
@incobalt @bismark So many good ideas, thanks for the feedback!
I really like the concept of the game! Audio was also very good. Names of the books are really funny! Keep up the good work!
Like the idea, but I think that the mechanics need some work. In my play, I start hovering all the books and selecting them by rarity (color). Some time constraints (or more space constraints) or new mechanics involving swapping books between shelves could enhance the mood (in my opinion).
Liked the little tune :). Good work!
Hey, thanks for putting up a web build!
My initial impression was that the books' worth would reveal itself and hide on mouse over, and that I would have an amount of time before the shelves I was stealing from would switch out, bringing in different books to trawl through. It seems however that I can just mouse over all the books then pick whatever I like in order of green, blue, beige until the shelves are empty and a new set spawns in. I like what you have here - well done for including music/sfx options too  - but the game seems to feel a little flat. With some extra game mechanics layered on top it would be much more interesting to play.
All of this I am sure you know already from other comments, but it helps to receive as much honesty as possible. With all that in mind, I'm gonna give you a follow on here, and then look forward to checking out what you make in the next compo/jam. Hit me up any time if you ever want more feedback. Cheers!
Fun, although very easy to get all blue books. I was getting around $350 every time - is that good?
Nice concept! I included it in my compilation video series of the Ludum Dare 42 compilation video series, if you’d like to take a look. :) https://youtu.be/F8Gtbi3loPc
Books are always cool and interesting, develops insanely. Recently I came across the site https://graduateway.com/essay-examples/poetry/ where there are whole collections of what I love so much. Poetry essays stores a lot of material, and I was very pleased that those who need help at the university will also be incredibly useful
books are our main source of knowledge
