Really liked the gameplay and character design :) The music can get a bit repetitive though considering each fight can take a few minutes. Maybe add some more variation to the music.
Out of curiosity. Are the 'moves' random or are they the same every time?
The moves are completely random, and thank you for the compliments! Music definitely wasn't our strongest suit

Itch.io link that is really just a windows download link :(

Pretty good, the music was a tad repetitive. Definitely could be a little bit more fast paced.
@Ripter itch.io hosts downloads. What were you expecting?

Great graphics (loved the details on the crowd !), and the gameplay was more balanced that what I would expect from a rhythm game developed in 72h, with a nice difficulty curve (and some sweet error tolerance in the input) and a game that's actually possible to finish. Nice work !
@thy-duck Thank you for playing and the feedback.
You did an amazing job of executing the feedback of the rhythm game in a way that just "feels" good to the player. Your art was also something to aspire towards, well done!
Would love to see a version of it in the future with more emphasis put towards the music + matching the beats of the song to the notes.
PS. What a cute splash screen logo! I love it.
Wow thank you guys so much, I'm so glad you're enjoying the game! I would've liked to match the notes with the music, but hey 72 hours right? Maybe next time, or if we continue supporting this!
@JVL Thank you for the comments! I put a quite a few hours into those guys so I am glad you noticed them :).
@doctormozart Thank you very much for the compliments! I am ecstatic to hear you thoughts on my art, it really means a lot. Who knows, maybe this can end up being an actual game one day ;).
Nice pixel art ! The controls are quite precise too. The music is a bit rough though. Maybe try Bosca Ceoil for your music next time ? See you at LD42 ;-) Feel free to try our game by the way, it's a rhythm game too.

@Rytannic I was expecting a web version. I don't have windows and it's really hard to find games I can review. I got excited because I thought the itch.io domain meant it was a web version. The game looks cool and I was hoping to try it.
@Ripter Hey, sorry to hear that, we'd really like you to try our game. I'm gonna see if I can port it to WebGL for you!
@SpaceMonkey We'll see ya there for sure! I'm gonna go check yours out right now.
The music leaves a lot to be desired. It's kinda lacking in quality, and is also way too short; It's not great to listen to a 5 second loop for a 5 minute fight.
The beats also don't really feel like they're working with the music. It kinda feels more like I'm just watching the notes instead of playing to the beat of the song.
The art style is nice though, and it was an interesting concept.
@SpaceMonkey Thank you for the feedback and comments, I actually used Bosca it's just I am not a musician but we just couldn't make a good game without music.
@Ripter I went ahead and put a WebGL port up for you! Feel free to check it out now if you'd like, please excuse any platform-related bugs, first time building to WebGL!

@jaredmercer Awesome! it works. The left side is cut off a little but nothing that prevents me from getting my but kicked by Mac. :D Having to press all four arrow keys either doesn't work, or I am really bad at it.
@Ripter So glad you came back to try it! It might be an issue with the port honestly. Thank you for the feedback, it's very appreciated!

Cool game! I love guitar hero and ddr so this game caught my eye. Fun to play and challenging, I couldn't beat the final round but I felt it was a fair fight. I was hoping that there would be punching animations for when you hit / get hit but it is still very cool and I really like it!
@Jrpl Thank you for the compliments and feedback! I wanted to make punch and hit animations for the characters but with the Jam's limited time frame I figured I would play it safe by using unity animations. If the game becomes something bigger then it will no doubt include sprite sheet animations, thanks again for checking out our game!
not a fan of the music haha :P but i like the idea and the title "beat boxer" my only crit is that it seems like i do much less damage to the other character than he does to me if i miss lol... also i'm pretty bad at rhythm games :) also i would say its important to play to your strengths so maybe making a music based game wasn't the best idea :P but it would be cool to see it working with some better tracks :)
oh and i also had the issue of the screen being a little cut off on the left. playing on PC on Chrome.
@Brendan Toy Thanks for the feedback! It definitely needs to be balanced a bit, and the music was the most difficult part for us. This was not only our first jam, but first completed game as well, we barely have skills in programming and art, let alone music haha. Thank you for playing though, I hope you had a good jam!

I like the concept behind but I missed some hit animations at least.

Managed to complete the game, pretty cool. I think that the damage of the punchs should be a little bit higher to be honest. But anything else is pretty :ok_hand:

I finished, I am the champion! I really like the idea of beat boxing and the graphics is really nice :) For other things I guess most has been already said - the music could use a little longer loop, so it wouldn't get so repetitive. And for my taste the matches were also a little bit longer than I would like them to be, or for the arrows to come in some sort of sequences more often - it felt like it is just "press these 3 buttons, wait a while, press these 2 buttons, wait a while" and the waiting made me feel the matches were too long (too much waiting :) ) But good job overall!

Likes ------------ VERY professional appearance, with the splash etc. Robust art direction / consistent art style. Pixels the size of your fist, that's how I like it! As a huge DDR game fan, this entry gave me a big smile. The controls are snappy and precise.
Improvements ------------ The music is the weakest part of the game, I would have expected some beats, or something. The punches themselves don't seem to add enough of a beat, sadly. People really don't like to setup and install jam games. Just give us a .zip :)
Gist ----------- I wouldn't have thought of combining these two genres, ever. KO'd
Other ----------- WHAT? How did you do the cursor in the Web GL version? Teach me, senpais!
The Web GL version has slightly cut off graphics, hint - you can set the canvas size in the Player Settings in Unity, set it to something with the same aspect ratio. I have made good experiences with 720p canvases.
Same goes for the Windows build - it takes my full 21:9 screen, meaning it will prbably do poorly on everything other than 16:9. If you force the aspect ratio (by disabling all others) in the player settings, the game will letterbox instead and look the same.
Like others have said the music was a bit repetitive, definitely something to work on. The idea was cool though and fits the theme really well. I also like the graphics - I wish the arrows had been more central as I spent most of the time looking at them instead of the nice characters you designed!
@Thygrrr Thank you for the extensive feedback, it is super valuable to us as developers. Thanks for the tip about just sending a compressed file, for some reason I thought people might want to install it, which doesn't make a ton of sense in hindsight haha. I realized somewhat late in to development that I didn't consider aspect ratios, so I ended up disabling all except 16:9. This, once again, was not the hottest idea in hindsight. I hadn't realized you can set Player Settings for WebGL, I'll be sure to check that out! As for the cursor... I'm not sure what I did special. I simply added the cursor to our Windows build and it showed up on our WebGL as well. Once again, thank you so much for your detailed feedback, you are the best!
@SecondDimension Thank you for the kind words! Yeah, we're gonna do some work to improve our music for further games for sure, as it's no easy skill. Thanks for playing!
@Altron Thank you! I agree the rounds were quite a bit longer than I would have liked, I'll be thinking more about flow for our next game. I'm glad you had a good time, hopefully you enjoy our next game even more!

Nice game, although I felt I got penalized twice when pressing too early. And the music did not always match the arrows.
Amazing job, specially considering how long you have been making games. You used the theme in a very cleaver way, props to the artist who made such nice graphics and good job on making everything feel so alive (like the crowd for an example).
Overall a superb entry!

Such a great idea! I think the title and idea is so clever. I do think having some actual beat boxing for the soundtrack would have been a nice addition, but overall, well done!
The art style in this game is just so beautiful. I just can't imagine how much effort and skill went into this! Especially in 72 hours! Overall a great game! The music was a bit repetitive, and I sucked at it, but still fun. Me failing was a lot more enjoyable than I ever would've expected.
Great ideas here. I noticed that my keyboard doesn't respond if I push three arrow keys at once, so some combinations are impossible haha. It was fun despite that though!
I'm a champion!! ahaha, great game, the music is a bit repeatitive but everything else is nice, good job
Hey! Really good job on this. I love the idea of combining boxing with beats. This felt like a really good beginning: attractive & consistent art style, clear instructions and gameplay, and the gamefeel of the hit-the-arrows-in-the-box mechanism is spot on. While the beat-game elements are clear and spot on, I'd really really love to see more of the elements from the boxing genre have come through. Hope you consider a post-jam version!
Oh, and the boxing glove cursor was just \*kissy fingers\* :)

I love rhythm games, but this one is not much fun. * Music is bad. Good music is critical to rhythm games. * Levels feel too long, but that might just be because the music is bad. * Game is way too easy -- I beat the entire career mode without a single mistake on my first try. * Theme isn't very strong because this doesn't feel at all like a boxing game. This is a rhythm game with some boxing graphics, and the boxing element never impacts the gameplay.
Pros: * Concept is interesting. If the boxing/rhythm elements were more closely combined in the gameplay, it could be pretty cool. * Controls are precise.
LD is tough, so congrats on getting through your first one with a complete game. I hope to see you again next time.

haha.. nice combination genres. love the arts and gameplay I really enjoyed it. Love your work!
The various characters were fun (even the audience). Would have like to see some actual feedback from the arrow input.

Amazing artwork, especially the character design and the background with the crowd. Great take on the theme with DDR meets fighting genre. Great work guys!

I really enjoyed the premise. The keys were not super responsive (several times I hit the correct combo and it was not picked up) but its a fun little game. I would have loved to see the fighters actually moving/fighting, it was a little bit too static. Rate mine? https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/41/knife-throwing-gallery
@the_noffs , @GroverTheGrovekeeper , @Simon Rahnasto , @caterein , @amazura , @team-yarn , @justinm , @JheysonLima ,
Thank you all very much for your wonderful comments and feedback! Getting responses like these makes the stressful and sleep ruining jam worth it!
I like the idea of a fighting rhythm game a lot. Only negative is that you can't quit the training screen without waiting for your character to get knocked out. If you expand upon the game I would love animations for the fighters. Also maybe you could add a rating for how accurately you hit the arrow and/or a counter for total number of hits and misses. I really love the character designs and the other art in the game. Good job. I would appreciate if you rated my game too. https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/41/vrnt

Nice combination. Great characters! I feel that some movement of the sprites correlative to the actions of the rythm part would add a lot of dynamism. Also, being a rythm game, the music should be more polished. Nice work!

I love this concept, I was really excited to finally get to play it! I don't have much to add to what's already been said; the art looks great, and the timing/levels could be a little snappier. Would love to play a more polished descendant if you decide to put more time into it. :) Nice work!
@Paul Avallone Thank you for the compliments! Yeah, I definitely shouldve add UI to let you leave the training screen, it was our last feature and I forgot to implement it.
@Relsqui If you’d like a post-jam version we would be happy to continue supporting this! We appreciate your feedback!
Good execution and great art! I felt the battles were a bit long. Maybe it was because the music was so repititve. Also the music felt retro for a different time than the graphics. But those were great, I really love the character designs (and that end boss... hehe.). I'd love to have animated punches on connected hits, but well, it's Ludum Dare after all :D
Good job on your game! Also, your logo is super cool! So cartoony!
@Beebo Studios Thank you for the wonderful comment it truly means a lot! The music definitely needs the most work, I was going for a punch-out style feel to the game so I used chip tune but you are right the graphics and music don't completely mix. Thanks for taking the time to play our game!
