Nice and concise mechanics and scope, perfect for a game jam. The UI and font was also easy to read and follow.

After I knew I wasn't going to beat my high score it was an incredibly annoying wait for all the back boosts to fire off so I could restart.

fussenkuh 2017-12-04 03:54

@blackatlas - Thanks for the feedback. Knowing my limited time, as much as I wanted to, I tried to keep requirements creep to a minimum to ensure I had something to submit. Generally, I'd agree with your back boost assessment. I had an idea to add a 'speed up' button once they kicked in, but, didn't have time to implement and test it.

scriptorum 2017-12-04 04:21

Nice job with the instructions and the animated bits. I thought your application of the theme was good. My high score was 214.64. It's really difficult to plan a good shot, you don't have a lot of warning beyond the first few back bubbles.

fussenkuh 2017-12-04 04:55

@scriptorum - Thanks :) I'm glad to hear the instructions were clear. It's something I tend to struggle with when making games. It looks like I might have succeeded this time. As for the planning, I was hoping to implement something that let the player scroll through the level (or maybe just zoom way out) before shooting, but, didn't have the time to work it into the tight schedule.

el-pepi 2017-12-04 05:46

Very solid game. Even the back boosts feel nice haha. I just wish the camera didn't move vertically, so I could see where I'm going.

snipera 2017-12-04 10:15

Loved the game! Thank you for making this :). I enjoyed the animated instructions. I noticed that your triangle wasn't equilateral and that bothered me a bit xD. I would definitely play this and compete with friends :P.

Great job! Check out mine if you can :) - https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/40/dont-get-hangry

tomas-selmeci 2017-12-04 13:12

My first attempt was -11 :D I love this kind of games. Really well done!

fussenkuh 2017-12-04 13:34

@el-pepi - Thanks! I may have to experiment with your camera comment idea. That might be a nice change!

@snipera - Glad you enjoyed it! I was wondering if anyone would note that I didn't actually make an equilateral triangle. Truth be told, I'm not really sure why I didn't. I'd love to actually get an online leaderboard going to make it easier for folks to compete with friends.

@tomas-selmeci - Ha! That's awesome :) Thanks for playing! For a while, it was really easy to fling yourself backward. Now, it's certainly still possible, but, you have to work a little harder for it.

tom-panton 2017-12-04 16:44

Loved this! It's really easy to understand how the game works, and it's a lot of fun. My only criticism is that the camera is a bit too zoomed in, which makes it quite hard to see where you're going, but other than that the gameplay was fantastic.

fussenkuh 2017-12-04 16:58

@tom-panton - Thanks! I'd tend to agree that the camera could probably stand to be zoomed out a wee bit more. I have to try to find the perfect balance between showing too much and not enough.

matthew-roelle 2017-12-04 17:09

I had a lot of fun playing, farthest I got was 260m :) Great execution, the modals in the beginning are nice. It also played really well on web, I don't have an android device to try it out on so I appreciate the web build.

fussenkuh 2017-12-04 17:18

@matthew-roelle - Thanks for the feedback! The game was certainly designed for the phone in mind, but, I wanted to make sure it was just as accessible from the web as well. The more people that can enjoy it, the merrier! :)

ohmi 2017-12-04 18:03

238m meter is my Highscroe :) Those sound effects are awesome, well done!

navot 2017-12-04 18:09

This game is just so much fun! First of, I loved the tutorial and how the cards animated. The popping sound is really satisfying. The gameplay is really simple, and really well polished.

Two minor points of criticism are that you can't really see where you are going when you are falling(you could change the vertical position relative to the triangle based on the velocity), and that there is no way to restart when you had a bad start, and know the attempt isn't any good.

In the end I got a highscore of 326m. I thoroughly enjoyed playing this game, great job!

fussenkuh 2017-12-04 18:19

@ohmi - Thanks! Glad to hear you enjoyed the game... and the sounds :)

@navot - Thanks for the kind words and the feedback! You're not the first with the camera criticism. I'll definitely have to revise that once the voting is complete. And, I contemplated a 'fast forward' or 'restart' once the player felt like the round was lost. But, ultimately, time didn't allow for it. Finally, dang good job on the 326m! I've been testing all weekend and my max 327.21. You practically bested that in just a few attempts ;)

nick-rafalski 2017-12-04 18:31

Great game jam game here. Yea, it's pretty simple, but it has a high level of polish and fits the theme well.

I really enjoyed some of the quality-of-life things like the distance numbers projected in the level, the counter for keeping track of BBs, etc.

I also ended up playing a lot longer than I thought I would. Got a 'good' score (I think) of 211 the first time I played, then saw all the comments here about 260, 238, 326(seriously???) and had to try again. I topped out at 250.58, and got 3 more around 240-250 before giving up. Addictive!

raziyya 2017-12-04 22:24

A simple idea but really well executed, with nice polish in the animations and sound effects. Had a lot of fun playing this and it's amazing you made this in 24 hours.

My only complaint is the camera doesn't show you what's coming and you can't plan your boosts accordingly. I hope you take this forward and improve it.

rialgar 2017-12-04 22:52

Really cool. The sounds and animations work awesome together, the mechanics are simple and fun. 219.72

fussenkuh 2017-12-05 03:13

@nick-rafalski - Thanks for the kind words! Ultimately, I decided to make the trade-off of keeping it simple and polishing it up vs. implementing more and more ideas... as much as I wanted to keep implementing.

@raziyya - Thanks for the feedback! The camera definitely seems to be a sore point for a lot of folks. Once the compo rating period passes, I'll definitely be updating and adding to the game. I'll have to seriously look into tweaking the camera.

@rialgar - 219 is pretty good! Thanks for checking out the game and the feedback!

azlen 2017-12-05 03:39

I downloaded this game onto my Android phone and played it on the bus. Managed — almost out of pure luck — to get a score of 327m after dodging all the obstacles and using my final boost after I hit the ground which put me at roughly 70 degree trajectory and a whole bunch of extra airtime and distance.

fussenkuh 2017-12-05 13:41

@azlen - I think you might be my first Android download. Thanks for taking the time to do that :) A bit of luck on the landing certainly plays a role in getting that Max Distance and, as far as I can tell, 327 might be the current best!

smilewood 2017-12-06 01:25

Interesting take on the "fling things right" style. I like your take on the theme, and the game is fun to play. Interesting choice going for a mobile platform, fun game.

srabatata 2017-12-06 05:50

Such a fun game! I had a really good time playing it. My personal best is 300.33. Great job!

antoine-vion 2017-12-06 08:44

Very cool for a 24h game alone ! i liked it (theme respected) gj ! ;)

fussenkuh 2017-12-06 12:27

@smilewood - Thanks! I was trying to interpret the theme as something more than "throw more < insert bad thing > at the player" :) I figure mobile has a terrible barrier to entry for LD, which is why I made sure the web version played well, but, ultimately, I wanted to create something that I would continue to play on my phone once the Jam was over.

@srabatata - Anything above 290 puts you in a very elite scoring club! Well done! Thanks for checking out my game :)

@antoine-vion - Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it :)

edmond00 2017-12-06 13:22

280 is my best ! The game is fun and challenging, so I have done many tries ! May the score depend too much of the luck and the ceiling was sometime frustrating but it is part of the fun and it is a little addictive anyway !

oxrock 2017-12-06 14:30

Sometimes the density of back arrows was ridiculous! Addicting little game though, I always enjoy physics games.

jani-nykanen 2017-12-06 17:08

It's simple, but enjoyable. I had fun playing this game. Nice job!

rolle 2017-12-06 19:39

Simple and fun! I got stuck playing it, so that's a good game! :-) Never got above 250 though... Thanks for coding the game!

fussenkuh 2017-12-06 22:42

@edmond00 - Thanks for playing! 280 is pretty good. Luck definitely plays a roll (pun intended). Once the LD reviewing wraps up, I'm considering various options on how that might be reduced.

@oxrock - Yeah, there are definitely levels that spawn with some crazy amounts of back arrows. As I didn't have additional time to tweak my procedural spawning, for now, I'm considering them 'difficult' levels ;)

@jain-nykanen - Simple and enjoyable were exactly what I was hoping for! Glad you enjoyed the game!

@rolle - "stuck playing it" is music to my ears :) Thanks for checking it out and for the feedback!

acamara 2017-12-07 08:24

I used to play lots of similar games when I was in uni. It's simple and addictive!

hugimugi7 2017-12-07 09:47

Very simple, reminds me of those flash games.

fussenkuh 2017-12-07 15:53

@acamara and @hugmugi7 - Thanks. I definitely took my inspiration from those types of games.

2017-12-08 13:07

Simple and well made game! I included it in my Ludum Dare 40 compilation video series, if you’d like to take a look. :) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u0hdEq4T8dE

faloon 2017-12-09 04:12

Great little game. Liked it.

peachtreeoath 2017-12-10 06:27

I'm a fan of launch games and have made one for LD in the past. The game feels pretty good and I did several runs. I was trying to figure out the optimal timing for the boosts + the angle......there's definitely some depth there but I couldn't decipher it as well as the other reviewers here. Naturally w/o the time constraint you could add the features full games have like upgrades and different obstacles, but you have something solid with what you were given, nice job.

A note about throwing engineering principles out the window for jams, oh you should embrace this from minute zero :). I personally singletonize almost everything just to crank out code just a tad faster.

rplnt 2017-12-10 18:53

Simple game, but with well incorporated theme and smooth experience across the board. One thing I missed was restart when I knew I screwed up. Won't post my score as it isn't as hight as some I saw in the comments :)

fussenkuh 2017-12-11 07:04

@faloon - Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it :)

@peachtreeoath - Thanks for taking the time to provide such awesome feedback! Being my first game jam of any kind, this was a great study in 'crunch time.' It's amusing (and scary) to see just how many hacks you'll employ just to make sure your product is done on time!

@rprint - Thanks for play! Adding a restart mechanism is certainly on my TODO list once the review process wraps up.

snipera 2017-12-11 17:46

@FussenKuh Thank you for this game by the way, this is my second comment, and just wanted to let you know that I still play your game every now and again while I have nothing to do haha, continuously trying to beat my score. My max distance so far is 306.18 :)

fussenkuh 2017-12-11 19:12

@snipera - Wow! I'm really freaking glad to read that you're still playing from time to time! Getting people to actually want to come back and play again is something I strive to do but seldom accomplish ;) On top of that, breaking 300 is quite the accomplishment!

I've actually been refining and adding new features to the game since the compo ended. There have been some major changes (for example, levels). None of the changes will see the light of day until the LD review period is over. But, be sure to check Itch.io in a few weeks for the update. Or, better yet, if you have an Android device, install the game there and watch for the update on Google Play!

snipera 2017-12-12 00:18

@fussenkuh Sweet! Looking forward to it :). I definitely want to see these new updates as soon as they're launched! But yeah, after the Review period is over for fairness purposes.
