This game captured everything I loved about older NES games. Sound effects, art, the freakin' awesome feedback from pushing the blocks around. I enjoyed this quite a bit and rated it quite accordingly! Really nice job!
One suggestion would be to make the intro skippable (if it was I didn't figure out how).
Other than that, 0 complaints. One of the more solid games on here that I've seen so far.
Overall, I really liked the game, my time was 1273 seconds (slow I know) it took me the longest to find the blue orb. I liked the way the blocks related to the actual path you took, and each block represented a different style room. That was so cool!
Graphics were awesome, the walking animation with the cape was cool. The intro was really well drawn. For Compo this is really impressive ;)
Thanks,
Ned
Remind me those Zelda games :p
Sometimes I pushed blocks without wanting to, because unlike in Zelda, you push them instantly when you are near them, I had to restart twice because of that x)
The sounds, the graphics are really mastered. I had a good time playing your game. Good job!
Nice bit of a twist having to move around 'rooms' to get to the goals. I could see this expanding into a series of puzzles, where this is 'round 1'. Other rounds would have progressively harder puzzles and interesting obstacles in the 'rooms'.
What a great little world! The intro text was a bit slow for me, but I think that might just be my connection I'm not really sure? Other than that the game was ace, Dad was proud! Would be really nice to see where this would end up if you had a lot longer, I feel a series of these puzzles would make for a really interesting game. Well done, I thoroughly enjoyed it
I'm speechless for this game, this is a stellar effort for 48 hours! The mechanics, the graphics, the sounds, the dialogue, EVERYTHING, was perfect. The only real feedback I am able to give is maybe to allow an option for WASD as many people are more comfortable with that. Also, maybe some hint might help out a little bit because i spent a good amount of time scratching my head and eventually gave up, but that might be just me.
Dad is proud!
Neat idea and one of few games that feel mostly complete and not just ran-out-of-time-done.
The puzzle is good but the actual walking to fetch each orb gets a bit tedious. With more time this would really have benefited from having more "levels".
(ignore double post :/)
I want to start by saying that this is simply not my type of game... but that doesn't matter, totally awesome. I have to admit I was confused as to how things worked at first, but I think that kind of thing is OK for a puzzle game. You're supposed to feel your way through things and figure things out. That this is a compo submission is pretty impressive to me. The art and music/sounds all fit in well with the retro era style you were going for. Just a solid entry, good job.
My only gripe is minor and silly. The sound that plays when the text is being typed doesn't line up AT all and I just found it super annoying. The text also seemed to go a little slow, a way to speed it up, or skip it if it's not your first time through might be nice.
This game had 0 issues. No sound skipping, no game breaking bugs, mechanics that feel polished. I had loads of fun and don't really have anything to complain about. I hate to admit that it took me a few moments to realise that the centre way stone represented the puzzle room and I had to connect that to the others, not just form paths between any two. Once I figured that out this became the best sliding block puzzle I have ever encountered in a game.
If I get super nit-picky I could say that the time it takes to backtrack to the puzzle room after picking up an orb was a bit annoying but that's really reaching. Overall this is a very solid entry, especially for a 48 hour compo entry.
I had real problems accidentally pushing blocks when I didn't mean to.
Rather than just pushing them when you touch them, it should require another key press once you're against them.
There are some bugs: - The way to the gray orb can be opened setting one piece with a vertical line between the middle piece and the gray. Even when lines don't match. - When you reset the puzle, pieces overlap the character if the character is in some piece's original place.
Well done anyway, overall is a good job.
The initial premise is really cool, but I don't think it really capitalizes on that idea much sadly.
|+ Once you understand how you are walking through the environments to collect the orbs, that's really cool/exciting. |+ The puzzle layout is nicely set up with an engaging amount of moves and sidestepping of pieces required to have each block connect. |+ The way the environment you navigate through is based on the color of the block is a great touch! |+ The initial dialog was really charming.
|- Moving the blocks is very fiddly and you can easily accidentally move them when you didn't mean to which conflicts with how initially nice the movement feels. |- Once you understand the mechanic, having to walk to get each orb feels regrettably dull.
? I think if there was any gameplay at all in the environments on the way to each orb, even super simple combat it could have kept a lot more engagement. Without that the task of getting the orb after moving the blocks didn't feel like an extra achievement. Pressing another button when you were next to a block would definitely help offset how frustrating it could be to accidentally move one, while keeping the nice smoothness of movement.
Really awesome! The central mechanic works really well, the puzzles are satisfying to solve and I like all the different environments you go through. If I had to nitpick I'd say that movement was a little slow (especially coming to/from the orbs) and it's a little easy to push blocks that you don't mean to, but neither of these gripes are particularly serious.
Very nice entry overall! It took me a wile to figure out the concept though. Maybe a very small introduction level would have been helpful. I really like the mood the music creates but there's a tiny detail: it doesn't loop seamless. I guess it's the old problem, when you convert audio to mp3, a short silence is added at the beginning of the track.
This game was well done and interesting. I can only make two suggestions. First, the intro was a bit long. Make it skippable or a button to speed up the text. Second, there were several time that I accidentally pushed two blocks which required me to start the puzzle over. Sometimes, this happened as I was moving my last block into place.
Overall, great game. Could very easily be expanded to a large game post jam.
I really like this. I went into it thinking it was going to be over complicated for some reason, but once I understood what to do it was pretty exciting.
**the good** The main mechanic is really cool, kind of mind bending. The graphics are *on point* and everything fits well together. It has a distinctly polished and finished feeling, like this is exactly what you had in your head when you started making it. The music was fitting.
**the bad** The sound effects were really annoying at times, namely at the beginning with the dialogue, and whenever you collected an orb.
Fantastic job, one of my favorites so far!
The intro was super cool! But I'd love to have skip-able text. The text speed at the beginning is too slow T_T
The design of the game is very interesting. But it feel a bit lacking. The process of understanding how the game work was quite fun, but after I figured it out the puzzles are quite simple and didn't provide much challenge. Once you completed a path the process of walking through them is just time-killing.
I don't mean by anyway that the game is bad, it's awesome! The only thing it's lacking is content. The graphic was on-point and gave me lot of nostalgia. The feeling of worldly mystery made me remember SNES classic like Terraria and Seiken Densetsu.
Overall I think this is a great game but a bit lacking. It would be great as part of a bigger game, for example a RPG where each block contains different monster you have to fight on the way to the orb etc.
I would love to see a larger version of this game :)
Loved it, nice job! The puzzle took me a bit to figure out, but once I saw it, I was like... Nice! Few things I noticed, the intro seemed long, and the 8 bit speech indicator noise was a little grating towards the end of it. It would be nice to have a way of fast forwarding it or something. It would also be nice to have a way to get back to the center room quicker, as some of the spots took a while to travel back and forth. Besides that, felt really good and well implemented!
Great game! My time was 397. I agree that the sound effects for the intro were a little harsh, but other than that, the game accomplished exactly what it set out to do. The mechanics worked really well, and the transitions between levels and intro were nice additions.
The text scroll at the beginning manages to be both too slow and too quick; the entire text takes a while to appear, and then disappears almost immediately. Also, the perspective on the blocks is weird:

It feels like there should be a connecting path from any perspective, no?
I liked this game a lot, it had a good overall feel. Definitely had some nostalgia appeal. :) I really enjoyed how the little bit of plot made a simple Sokoban style game feel like there was some real purpose to playing.
I felt like the dialogue at the beginning was too slow, but I didn't want to skip it because I wanted to get the plot, speeding that up a bit or letting the player complete it by pressing enter or something could greatly improve that experience.
One more (kind of nit-picky) complaint, the music almost looped seamlessly but there's a noticeable restart point and, after hearing it couple of times, it only became more noticeable but it wasn't bad enough to ruin my whole experience.
Wow this is really cool! I liked the puzzle mechanic, it was really interesting to see how it interacted with the worlds and surprised me. The graphics were really nice as well, simple and effective! Good work! :D
Super nice graphics, but the game was a bit too challenging for me. I included it in my Ludum Dare 38 compilation video series, if you’d like to take a look :) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nKbr96NdjUs
