LD38 — A Small World

ATLANTIS by OccultOne 2017-05-01T09:04:01Z

This was really fun. The only big issue I encountered was that, for some reason, the scout's teleport would only move them one tile (which ended up costing me my sweet sweet victory). The music was very nice and the way it built as you activate towers caught me off guard but was an incredible surprise. The artwork was a nice mix of 3d and 2d overlayed sprites which gave the game a nice coherent feel.

I didn't experience the issues others have reported about actives as both the mage and the druid did almost exactly what I was expecting after reading their tool-tips. Movement was clunky though as getting the game to accept the tile I wanted to go to would sometimes take a few clicks and on one occasion my mage just launched themselves into the flood tiles for no apparent reason.

Overall it was a fun experience only problem I really had was the scout active and the occasional fight with the UI

This was actually kind of fun. It has a few issues like not giving you any feedback when eggs are laid and the incredibly jarring instant world reset upon death. The egg throwing system felt a bit dodgy as aiming without any guide or background is a bit of a pain. However, once I stopped trying to use the eggs and just launch my duck into the oncoming asteroids it was pretty fun. The spawning system also seemed to spawn entities slow enough that it was actually possible for me to get between them in time, which is nice.

The artwork looks nice and the music while repetitive and a little bit annoying at first kind of fits with the gameplay loop so I guess that could be labelled a feature. overall it was an enjoyable experience.

This game had 0 issues. No sound skipping, no game breaking bugs, mechanics that feel polished. I had loads of fun and don't really have anything to complain about. I hate to admit that it took me a few moments to realise that the centre way stone represented the puzzle room and I had to connect that to the others, not just form paths between any two. Once I figured that out this became the best sliding block puzzle I have ever encountered in a game.

If I get super nit-picky I could say that the time it takes to backtrack to the puzzle room after picking up an orb was a bit annoying but that's really reaching. Overall this is a very solid entry, especially for a 48 hour compo entry.

Really solid concept with an execution that is quite strong considering the time constraint. The gameplay feels nice and with a few more module types this could actually push its way into being a solid puzzle game. The only serious issue is that the game doesn't zoom out fast enough meaning that for the first few blocks in a tower you can only gain some height if the next block spawns directly above the tower, which is a pain given that the mechanics push this towards being a leader-board game. The lack of music also had the world feeling a bit desolate but that's really a small complaint.

overall this was a fun game, I enjoyed myself. Well done.

Super Small-io World! by micahcowan 2017-05-01T11:03:40Z

The core mechanic is well implemented and actually pretty fun to play with. The main problems that this game has is a) limited implementation as there are only three planets to jump around on things get stale fast and b) enemies move crazy fast and, while this may just be me cracking under pressure, that one that just swoops all over the place is really annoying to predict and avoid. The music was pretty okay defiantly better then nothing (so it's doing its job).

over all you've made a pretty strong demonstration of the core mechanics which is an accomplishment given the short amount of time you had to do so.

This was enjoyable with a few caveats: Jumping was weird, I can't describe what felt so awkward but something just didn't feel right, It wasn't game breaking but it was there; hitboxes for killing the bat things were a bit glitchy, Sometimes I would land on one and it would die, other times I would land on one and instantly lose 2 points of health; when the player lands it takes them a half second to slow down. This wasn't an issue until the last section where I died several times to just sliding off the edge.

On the positive side of things though the music was nice and the visuals did their job. Your inclusion of checkpoints was a good choice as it's the kind of thing that often gets left out and this game would have been unbearable without them. Ultimately I did have fun with this game it just took some work.

@jupiter-hadley Thanks for giving it a look. It has a tonne of rough edges that I would have loved to sand out if had the time but overall it was really cool to watch someone else play a game I made (even if it is a bit rough round the edges).

@burgee crafting the intro took more time than I will ever be willing to publicly admit so I'm glad people seem to have found it charming.
