Hey I just played your game. Know that I'm a friend of bog13 that made the same game with a sword haha
I found the graphism rather cool even if more worked could have been better ^^ I wished we could walk / run faster because we can't escape a single spider, so we can't escape even more; some speed would have balanced a bit that problem I guess.
Just to say, the splashscreen has a terrible background sprite haha My eyes burn, that's like an optical illusion :p

I had fun, the music and sound was satisfaying, you got a good LD ^^
Thanks :D

jonpul 2016-08-29 19:22

Pretty nice implementation with some rough edges - no diagonal shooting but spiders can attack diagonally, ended up in an end state where I couldn't restart.
But nice work.

aroscillo 2016-08-29 19:36

There is diagonal shooting. I works very well. I just tested it again.

aroscillo 2016-08-29 19:37

also all you have to do is move around and the level restarts.

decentsauce 2016-08-29 19:56

Nice entry. The animation is a little bit weird but I think it's interesting. :) Music is nice but doesn't seem appropriate for fighting off a horde of horrifying spiders.

aroscillo 2016-08-29 19:57

I agree the music was a last minute effort. Thank you.

senor-salty 2016-08-29 21:38

Good graphics and decent music, but the combat was really repetitive and got tiresome after a few minutes. A few different enemy types would be a welcome addition(maybe a poison shooting spider,or a spider that does no damage but stuns you.)Also, the backround of the title screen was really hard to look at,and honestly it nearly gave me a headache just from looking at it for a few seconds. Other than that, pretty fun!

justashadow 2016-08-29 21:40

This is pretty bare bones, even for a compo entry, but it gets the job done. Also, I don't know about you, but that title screen hurts my eyes!

aroscillo 2016-08-29 21:42

I get it no one likes the title screen. LOL

mrbrenan 2016-08-29 21:42

The graphics are not wonderful but it works.
It was a bit hard to understand how to shoot correctly the spiders.
Nice game, good job :)

amine-tcherak 2016-08-29 22:08

Very Nice i love your Game Good Works )=

blinry 2016-08-29 22:58

Hey, I didn't play your game, I just wanted to let you know that in order to get meaningful feedback, I think you should give some yourself. Those fifteen 2-word comments could make the impression that you didn't really play those games, don't you think? Thanks for understanding. Will gladly check out your game later!

nnnnneeeedddd 2016-08-29 23:11

Good:
I liked the music. I also liked the spider art (or photo?) they are nice and creepy.

Bad:
I move diagonally up and to the left when I am not pressing any controls, I am not sure why this happens.
Also, 'S' is not very intuitive.

Anyway, thanks for making the game! I had a lot of fun with it :)

aroscillo 2016-08-29 23:18

I did play all the games I left feedback on...???

tackwin 2016-08-30 00:19

It's an interesting game, there is a good mood, the graphics and the narrow vision helped. there is some bug, like the score being off the screen, or being able to pass some wall

johnbjuice 2016-08-30 00:24

Congrats on your first compo!

Apparently you've been leaving some pretty...curt feedback, and I've done some poking around to confirm this. And indeed, you have been leaving 2-word comments instead of useful feedback. You have to understand why people are suspicious - at best it's rude, at worst it seems like you're gaming the system to get more attention.

Regardless, I'll keep my feedback short and to the point.

Your game is playable, but it needs a lot of work. The assets are a wash, nearly no animations, the controls are clunky, some of the walls don't collide at all, the enemies get stuck on each other, the pop-ups are annoying, and finally, yes, the title screen hurts my eyes too. Also, the music gets annoying pretty quickly.

Congratulations once again on completing your first compo entry - I hope to see you improve your game development skills and your feedback as well.

aroscillo 2016-08-30 00:56

Weird Most people liked the music.. I'm just glad I made a game about Ancient Technology. Otherwise what's the point of even being in this jam?

aaranos 2016-08-30 01:00

The controls are a little difficult to work with since you have to move in the direction of the thing you want to kill, which in turn makes it kill you. I think it would of benefited from some kind of speed boost or mouse aim since the spiders appear to move faster.

aroscillo 2016-08-30 01:02

Thank you. I agree

adafish 2016-08-30 01:31

It was fun, but it was hard to play. The spiders would often get caught on one another and I agree, you move a little slow. Overall, a decent game jam entry.

wicked7000 2016-08-30 01:44

It was a good game jam entry the only thing I would say is at times its hard to hit the spiders due to the angle at which they hit you , but other than that overall it was good!

johnasebok 2016-08-30 02:07

I had a few issues... I got pretty good with the game and was able to explore most of the map. There is a bounding issue on the left and right sides of the map - that is to say you can walk right off the game and it appears you can go for infinity in either direction. Perhaps that's the best way to kill spiders :P.

You matched the theme by using ancient tech and not a bad entry for a shoot'em up game and nice extra effort by tying in a leader board mechanic.

aroscillo 2016-08-30 02:11

Ok I didn't want to tell anyone because its not finished but you can use a controller. I plays Awesome, however when you let go of the stick he snaps to the right. I didn't have time to fix this so I didn't tell anyone. Try it.

sorlok 2016-08-30 03:00

Bobby has a bit of a spider problem. :D Neat concept, but the ability to fire while moving backwards would have helped. Also, it seems like you can just rapid fire the bow (holding longer doesn't affect damage?)

aroscillo 2016-08-30 03:08

Sorlok you nailed it. I should take this game make it a two stick or keyboard with mouse. The Bobby can shoot in any direction while running and add a charged shot that wipes out the enemy's health bar. Thank for the positive input bro I'll be playing your game soon.

purgatory 2016-08-30 06:54

Ah, these gamemaker 8 effects make me nostalgic! While the gameplay is a little repetitive, the shadows make a very suitable atmosphere. I do agree with using mouse aim, though I feel there is a certain skill to doing it the current way.
If you were to expand on this I would suggest adding upgrades and more enemy types.

wheerd 2016-08-30 08:02

I like the graphics, the spiders look pretty creepy. However, the controls are terrible, even with a controller. Because you always turn left or up, you have to run into the spiders to shoot them. Then they kill you. Some things that could be improved:
1. Fix the aiming, so that you dont have to move to keep your direction
2. Give the player some invulerability after being hit. Right now you can die in half a second from full HP, if you run into a spider directly.
3. Increase the players speed so that you are a bit faster than tthe spiders. That would enable you to kite them a bit.
4. Maybe make it a twin stick shooter?
Also, the title screen game me cancer XD

ishikawanakamura 2016-08-30 17:20

I like the game, but there are some things that annoyed me:

# The controls did not allow me to play this game properly, because of the snapping to north, east, south west would not allow me to kill all spiders, even though you recommend a controller you could have used the mouse as a point to rotate the player to

# Make everything a bit faster (even though the player has an armor), because at the moment everything is a bit too slow

# Spawn rate too high? After just 3 seconds I was surrounded by spiders in the corner

# ...

There are a lot of things you could add, but its still an interesting game

aroscillo 2016-08-30 17:46

I agree. I submitted this game with like an hour to spare. If a controller is not plugged in Bobby wont snap right. I didn't have tie to fix that. An alarm to slow down the spawn rate would have been simple I wish I thought of that thanks.

metalhaze 2016-08-30 21:18

The game was playable and the music was relaxing. However the controls were a bit un-intuitive and gave me a hard time trying to learn it.

In terms of game play I played it once and didn't feel the need to replay the game for anything i missed. Upgrades or perhaps enemy variety would be a good addition.

The game has potential, good work!

rttstudio 2016-08-30 21:47

The game was simple and fun, but the animations and graphics were really weird. Turning the player upside down and all. But that aside really entertaining

aroscillo 2016-08-30 22:47

Thank you. I learned allot doing this competition. Going forward I think I can produce more in less time. Also I've learned allot about Ludum Dare and the community. Awesome people.

simple_blue 2016-08-30 23:15

controlls are AWEFULL! make it WASD and aim+shoot with mouse. also, dont make him turn to the left when no button is held down. other than that, neat consept, but needs a lot of work.

mrerdalural 2016-08-30 23:44

Controls are the challenge of this game. Spiders come too quickly and in huge numbers so its so hard to see whats after the first corner. Gameplay did not convince me to play for more than 5 runs.

Spider sprites were pretty good and I liked the creep ambient you went for.

frix360 2016-08-31 00:28

Very difficult. Controls need some work. Don't do titles like that or else people with epilepsy won't be feeling too fell :D I actually really liked the music( not sure why you think it's bad...). All around decent game, just need to fix controls and add more enemies.

everard999 2016-08-31 01:54

need some work on hte gameplay but is a solid ideia to work! good job :D

moobchunks 2016-08-31 04:38

Nice little game, the spiders were a good enemy, and constantly on my ass. 360 degree shooting would've made the game more playable I think. Didn't notice the title screen until I read about it in the comments lol, I've seen worse!

hackingroelz 2016-08-31 10:04

The spider art looked pretty good, but the controls were a bit awkward.

hercludes 2016-08-31 20:14

I agree with johnbjuice, I've seen some comments you've left and they seem to not give any critique or reference the game at all. The menu background hurt my eyes; the game overall needs a lot of improvement.

aroscillo 2016-08-31 21:35

Wow I know my comments are more helpful than this one. Maybe you should find a Hater Jam and join that...

nervous-composers 2016-09-01 13:04

Good try! I liked that you integrated with an online scoring system. It's probably the first entry that I've seen do this.

geckoo1337 2016-09-01 14:36

Really good - really hard. However I liked it. Well done ++

ramoncb 2016-09-02 04:58

Good job!

In this kind of game, the character needs to be a little more faster than the enemies. Think about Doom (1993), but top-down. The only true advantage of the player is just that he is faster, is not in the health bar/guns/power-ups.

Talking about power-ups, maybe in a future update, you could add some itens, or the classic "money + buy upgrades between wave of enemies", those things are key to making this kind of games addicting.

Sorry my broken english. ^^

casevse 2016-09-02 20:20

I like the music and the gore xD. Maybe a faster player movement would be better. Good work!

aroscillo 2016-09-04 16:14

Thanks to all the feed back I was able to polish up my game this week. A link to the post jam version is below Added working gamepad controls(I solved the “Game Maker Effect”) LOL. A charged shot. AI for the spiders fixed. So is there animation. Score drifting away fixed. Last but not least the title screen that hurt everyone’s eyes is fix LOL. You can even press start on your controller to progress past it. I also added a scope like effect and more music/sound effects. Thanks you everyone who helped me make Bobby Bow a better game. Please play and rate on Game Jolt.

I gave it another go to see the improvements you made. Definitely easier to play and actually get a score in. I still had to run at the spiders to point towards them with keyboard and mouse, but being faster than them I was able to make it non-lethal to myself.

I ended up with a score of 1310 at the end. I basically ran to a corner and held out there until they finally chipped away the last of my hp.

Well done on the improvements. A few more suggestions:
- Don't allow spawns within the player's sphere
- Spiders seemed to spawn outside the wall and were able to get in
- Powerups? Speed boosts, gattling arrows, etc just to make it more fun
- Spider variants, maybe one spits acid, one jumps around, etc.

narkhos 2016-09-04 20:46

It's a good starting point.
I can't shoot down-right and down-left while walking (the other directions work well).
My suggestions :
Try to avoid using repetitive textures or break them by adding some randomness.
Vary the ennemies behaviours. In your game, when the player run in a direction, all the spiders are following. In Pac-man their was already some variations in A.I. that could inspire you : http://mentalfloss.com/uk/games/31287/the-different-strategies-of-each-of-pac-mans-ghosts
You should not use pop-up windows (Name entry and Game over message), you break the immertion of the player.

Hope that help ^^
Keep the good work :)

mrmordem 2016-09-05 09:16

Fun if a little bit flawed, the character movement felt a little bit slow, and having the exact same speed as the ennemies felt like it was hard to evade and shoot them back, but that's not that big of an issue i'd say.

for the positives the gameplay seems good and responsive, and having controler support is always nice

so overall well done for something done in 48 hours :)

stevenjmiller 2016-09-06 07:45

Simple, but fun. I was unable to access the source code (I wanted to see it to be able to leave some more specific feedback), which is usually a sign that the page is private instead of public. I tried both versions, but will base my feedback on the original version because I played it longer. The origin of the player sprite seems to not be centered, making the player move to the left and right while rotating. I'd recommend having the score indicator follow the camera (which could be done by having it drawn at view_xview and view_yview). Also, for the sounds in the new version, using the function audio_sound_pitch() and setting it to a random value (for example, random_range(0.5,1.5)) would help make the sound effects less repetitive. Good game, I hope this helps!

aroscillo 2016-09-06 18:02

@Steven Miller
Thank you so much that function will come in very handy. Also I just downloaded and opened the project from itch.io. You need game maker to open it.

stevenjmiller 2016-09-06 20:05

I have GameMaker, I just get a "404 page not found" when I click the link. You can access it because you created the page, on itch.io you have to click "edit game" and then change it to public instead of private in order to have people besides yourself be able to see it. I wouldn't worry about it, most people don't really care about the source code, I just thought I might be able to see what caused a few of the collision bugs if I had access to the source.

aroscillo 2016-09-07 13:21

I made it public. LOL thanks, didn't know it was private, rushing things up at the last minute.
Iv been playing with the pitch and it is working nicely. A few more things like bosses and different enemys and things should shape up.
