LD48 — Deeper and deeper

Dark thoughts by Knowledge 2021-04-28T08:13:53Z

Is the `game` binary runnable as is? Or is there some setup/installation/compilation to be done? When trying to run it (Ubuntu 20) I get `error while loading shared libraries: libSDL2_image-2.0.so.0: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory`. It seems you should have bundled SDL2 with it? I'd like to try it!

This is HILARIOUS. Such a cool artstyle, and the text oh man.

Attacking is a bit slow but I see this a plus, since it conveys better the goofy nature of the character and of the game. It moves exactly like you would image a weird character from a flat medieval painting would move. The problem lies more in understanding what you will hit/collide with. Perhaps a visual indication of the curve that your axe swipes could give you a better idea.

Also loved the effect of being slowed down and having difficulty moving through dense parts of vegetation. It just adds on the overall effect of comic slowness of the game, and that's amazing.

A real pity that the link is broken! The auger looks dope!

LOATIN by Leo Nadeau 2021-04-27T21:00:15Z

Visuals are simply amazing. A+. I wasn't able to grasp the gameplay though. It's a pity because I get the feeling that the mechanics and the controls can actually give original and cool interactions, but I could not play it. Still, great presentation.

Infinity Driller by jkniest 2021-04-28T10:47:11Z

I got an error at the beginning, something along `HTTP Response Header "Content-Type" configured incorrectly on the server for file Build/WebGL.wasm , should be...etc.`

But I was able to play nonetheless.

Cool game. I missed some music and sound, but I enjoyed it, especially the upgrades part. Really well done. It's a pity that one cannot keep them in the various runs. Allowing to keep them would make players stay more and play longer.

Collecting rocks to make energy was also a bit confusing, as rocks look as something to avoid while instead they aren't. Perhaps something that has a more "energy-y" look would be better, something that attracts the eye, and is lighter and has a similar color to the light green of the battery HUD.

Nice job!

This is freaking cool. Love the mechanics, so atmospheric and intuitive. Love the artwork, and nice job on the music. Amazing!

I didn't get if there was an end to the game, as I couldn't do much other than wandering around the rooms escaping the dark monster. But I enjoyed the experience a lot anyways.

We also used godot for our submission and we have an initial cutscene that shows the protagonist waking up in the bed. So much in common!

Deep Dreams by Diebanez 2021-04-27T20:12:18Z

Hey @threaded-lama-digital, glad you (dis)liked the blacck ball :P

We added that at the last moment and called it THE FINAL BOSS.

Programming it was fun, and it's good to hear it feels like it was intended: cruel!

An Ore'ible Game by ygrichman 2021-04-28T08:59:04Z

Wow this is fantastic on so many levels. You made a fully functional truck! With physics and sounds and lights and everything.

The gravity is a bit off, for example when you throw the boulders. But you built a fun environment in which to play.

One note on the presentation: maybe you should put the devlog/issues part of your LD down, after the game information, or you should reserve those information for a blog post here. In that way you can make it more immediate for somebody that stops here to understand what the game is about and to want to play it!

Good job.

The Deep by TheMoonrise 2021-04-28T11:07:33Z

Wow. Amazing. Models, composition, mechanics and sound are perfect. Small and well executed, exactly how it should be!

Bunny Bunny Dig Dig by ZakAmana 2021-04-27T21:20:02Z

Hats off to you! Very polished graphics and animations. Well done. The gameplay wasn't the best, but let's be honest, who cares! This is so well done that it's a pleasure just to watch it :) Kudos!

Terrario by Team-on 2021-04-28T08:39:51Z

Nice game. I think the mechanics are solid, and you really made a lot of varieties for the blocks and the resources. Of course it lacks some nice graphics, but the art is simple and understandable so it's ok.

It wasn't clear what the goal of the game was (is it just a sandbox?), but I feel you built quite some content, so great job!

I found a bug: if you are in a vertical tunnel and are on a ladder, and you go right+up or left+up, you enter the ground tiles, ignoring the collisions, and then you start floating up and you may end up in places where you are not supposed to go.

Down the Dwarvern Hole by TheseusInABottle 2021-04-27T20:44:45Z

I really loved the graphics! The puzzles were good. The only I would have preferred is perhaps a slightly faster movement to speed up the gameplay. The voice acting was funny but the "soundtrack" can become annoying. That's the only downside. Other than that, great work!

Nox Terrorem by bixarrio 2021-04-28T09:03:19Z

Hey! A bullet hell set in a nightmare, just like our submission! Didn't think I could find something so similar in the concept. Buddy games <3

Esophagus' inCRYPTion by Baconeta 2021-04-28T10:39:23Z

Nice game. Quite relaxing since you cannot die (and it adheres to the theme of being a mummy!).

I love the character and the overall setting.

Perhaps one thing that could be done to improve it is to differentiate the values of the entities in the environment. I felt it was all a bit too light and within the same luminosity value, and this made visually reading the game slighlty harder.

I found the cat, but is that the end? Does it have an ending?

Dongeons & Potions by Revetoon 2021-04-27T18:36:47Z

Great game. Love the art style and loved the nice touches like the movable lanterns and books in the environment. Overall, it's really a nice small complete polished game!

DEEP by TeamTooLazy 2021-04-28T08:27:35Z

Really nice music. Cute game. The story part is hilarious (albeit maybe a bit confusing). I did not fully grasp the gameplay. Perhaps it could be explained a bit better.

Nice job!

THE COOKIE IS A LIE by Wouter52 2021-04-27T18:04:38Z

Hey! Nice game. Loved the character creation with a simple hand drawn sprite. And I loved the bit of "MMO" aspect that there is to the game in being able to see other people's results! By the way, I saw you live in Groningen. I live there too! Maybe we can get in touch and program something together in the future!

Pâquerette Down the Bunburrow by Herbie Puppy 2021-04-27T18:29:51Z

Absolutely fantastic game. I love this puzzle. It's very original, yet simple and perfect for the theme of catching a bunny. The art style was really polished too. Amazing!

The Shadowy Temple by Kiwi1281 2021-04-27T18:46:42Z

Hey! I loved the atmosphere of this game. I think this is one of the few I tried that really conveys a sensation of going deeper and deeper. I appreciated the effort of going 3D. I didn't understand the mechanics of the game though, and I got stuck. By reading here it seems that one had to line up the balls visually. Perhaps a visual feedback when you did that and/or when you were close to doing that could have helped in communicating the main mechanics. Also, the fact that the first doors open very easily just by wandering around makes it so that one can progress without you designers making sure that they understood the mechanic. Anyways, for a 3 days gems I think it's a great result overall! Especially given that it was your first!

Rhythm Cult by CodeCavy 2021-04-27T18:20:11Z

Veeery cool music and overall atmosphere. I like the Undertale-like sound effects on the dialogues. And I loved the narrative.

SPERMA by the neon shark 2021-04-27T20:32:11Z

Such a cool idea. A true multiple-person game! Game is very well thought and executed in terms of design. Unfortunately the performance seems to be a problem. It's unplayable on Firefox for me (the simulation goes 10x slower for some reason) and the game, while it runs on chrome, maxes out my CPU. Performance problems aside, genius concept. Well done!

Escher's Dream by deltachemist 2021-04-28T08:21:50Z

Hey! Tried on linux (Ubuntu 20). Works perfectly fine!

I think it's a nice concept. Really liked the mechanics. The music is not super complex but it works perfectly in my opinion. And kudos for going 3D!

The things that I would change are the excessive sliding of the character when falling. I would remove the horizontal component of speed when you fall down, otherwise it gives the feeling that you are walking on ice (or maybe that was intended?).

And sometimes I could not understand the geometry of the pieces. I felt like going deep by brute forcing. It would be nice to have some feedback on the geometry of the pieces you fall through, after you go through them.

Nice work overall!
