LD40 — The more you have, the worse it is

Jazzy Beats by Moski 2017-12-09T06:33:13Z

I just wanted to say that I really loved this game, and greatly respect all of the work that went into it. Everything holds together here extremely well -- the wonderful art is brought to life in a really energetic way through the animations, the music gives a strong atmosphere to both the setting and the pace and energy of the game, and the programming seems incredibly strong, with what look likes like it must be an extremely complicated AI setup running the rival and the fans! Everything seems extremely polished, right down to the professional-looking interface. I really appreciate the devlogs you all have written, to get a chance to see the process!

Wonderful game, and seriously great work. (And a huge thanks, also, for the very kind support for our game, it's greatly appreciated!)

Trial of the Reaper by Cliff Lee CL 2017-12-08T21:45:17Z

This was a lot of fun! I liked the art style and the visuals, and was impressed by the movement and swinging/speed-burst animations. It kept me playing until I got my A, which stayed fun throughout. Very nice work!

GARUA by dietzribi 2019-05-01T09:23:56Z

Really amazing submission, I ended up really settling in and playing it for a solid half hour, which is a really impressive amount of gameplay for a jam game! My main praise would be the overall mood of the game -- something about the art style and the stark environment and especially the moody music really struck a great tone. Loved the idea of the vertical-slice of a Metroidvania, as well -- gated progression with mechanics that are both movements and attacks. I was really impressed with the attention to detail!

As others have said, it'd be great to see what this might turn into with more time than a jam allows. I loved the idea of farming for blood before a boss battle, and with some numbers tweaked there, I think you could find a difficulty balance that works well. Right now the core idea is solid, and it should be easy to turn that into something that feels balanced.

Last note was just how fun it was to get into a big fight and see some of the little attentions to gameplay detail playing out -- archers shooting each other, reflected arrows hitting other monsters, dive attacks hitting people a screen away with the shockwave. Really cool stuff. Great work, and best of luck with your scores!

Dr. Ectomy by BoxedMeatRevolution 2019-05-01T09:32:59Z

Very cool and fun/funny use of the theme. I was really impressed with how difficult those puzzles could be with the particular shapes and arrangements. Lots of fun!

Proton by Greg Lord 2019-05-01T20:32:18Z

Thanks, all! Really appreciate the feedback, and the many kind words! @fatpenguin Sorry to hear that! I'll take a look and see if something might be spending points twice when it shouldn't be? @philipprapp95 Haha, yeah, that's not the first time I've done that, either -- "Oh, I'll totally remember to take these debug buttons out later!" Whoops...! Also, if you hit Tab there is an instructions panel (it's too easy to miss that) - Delete or Select button will restart the level! @nillard and @xsoodx Thanks, and I'd love to hear what you think of it with the audio in now -- even if that's just for a post-jam version.

Thank you again, all! I appreciate it!

Proton by Greg Lord 2019-05-01T21:55:23Z

@felipedermann Thanks! I've added links to a post-jam version that now include the audio that wasn't quite finished yet. I'd be curious to hear whether you think it helps, if you have the time!

Coin-Op Kid by Strega 2019-05-04T07:39:37Z

This is amazing. I also worked on a game about a robot preserving resources, but this one went a totally different way and I really enjoyed it. The coin mechanics were totally clever, and used the platformer style really well. The visuals were charming, the audio was lively and supported the mood well, and the levels were all just the right mix of clever and increasingly tricky. Really loved this -- great work!

Styx It To The Man by frostdragonliz 2019-05-01T15:54:31Z

Really charming game -- great, great visual atmosphere. I definitely understanding running out of time for audio (same thing happened to me), but if you are still interested in working on it, I can picture some spooky or gloomy music/water sounds really tying off this mood the rest of the way. Either way, though, top mood score from me, and it's a great game overall. (I totally maxed out the boat before I retired, just because I was having fun.) Awesome work!

Robo Portrait by finalspace 2019-05-04T07:02:26Z

Super fun and very clever. Really loved the rhythm and I thought the difficulty escalated very gracefully. Definitely a super original piece here -- loved it, and great work!

HeartString by pcoridan 2019-05-01T16:04:13Z

Really beautiful pixel art -- between that and the lighting and the animations, the mood was perfect. The music was atmospheric and haunting, and set the tone the rest of the way. Loved the environment all around.

The couple of thoughts I had would be to smooth out the acceleration of movement a little, so that it's less floaty, and to add some kind of visual or auditory confirmation when you've killed each of the enemies. The squeak of the rats was easier to tell than the skeletons, who seemed to pause a few frames in a standing pose before dying, which usually burnt an extra arrow or two trying to kill them. Small things, hopefully, and otherwise it's great!

Would love to see more -- well done, and good job!

Rashness by Saering 2019-05-01T19:50:59Z

Super solid, lovely, and plays really well. Loved the mechanics, and you chose interesting powerups that were fun to experiment with. (Maxing bullet damage, player speed, and bullet speed was my winning combination!) Really enjoyed this one, and you could definitely have a great seed idea for a large boss rush game here! Great work, and best of luck!

King's Alchemist by Vlad Dae 2019-05-01T15:30:20Z

This was genuinely fun, and was a nice overall pace -- the learning curve, the amount of gameplay, and the rate of improvement. Memorization definitely helps, of course, which made me wonder if you'd be interested in a mode that varies the formulas per session, to give it some replay factor past the moment when you start to memorize them. Either way it was fun, and felt like the timers vs tasks were well balanced. I'd love to see a post-jam with audio if you're interested in continuing to work on it! Great job.

Fateshift by dougLima 2019-05-01T19:00:05Z

Beautiful artwork and effects! The whole dungeon feel, even for a single screen, was atmospheric and lively. I could easily see a whole game in this style, if you wanted to keep expanding on this core jam idea. The timing was fun and impressively implemented, and the rhythm of it got to be a fun little game loop. I would love to play it again after you add the things you mention -- I wasn't sure what the purchased items did, but I liked the way you implemented that. Best of luck with your future work!

bird food by kyavi 2019-05-01T20:07:09Z

Really cute, and a clever twist on a classic. I had a lot of fun playing this, and the level design was clever enough to keep it interesting. Impressive stuff, nicely done!

LD41 — Combine 2 Incompatible Genres

Gem Labyrinth by Reylisten 2018-04-26T14:20:07Z

Really solid and charming game! I loved the visuals, from the very high-quality pixel art itself to the lively animation of it that gave it a sort of dance feel. The music was absolutely wonderful as well, truly catchy and varied enough to stay interesting throughout the game, with a dancy chiptunes feel that matched the visuals perfectly and gave a very fun rhythm to the whole gameplay. The game mechanics felt smoothly implemented, and it ran solidly and did what I expected it would throughout, so a shout to the programming as well!

The gameplay was a fun combination of these two genres, and I was happy to play through the whole thing, having fun the whole time. I think the challenge of the idea would be in how to make this kind of more difficult, without just cornering the player into "must get hit" kinds of tile setups -- but, with the clever monsters you've set up already, I imagine the ideas for harder or trickier/more unpredictable could keep flowing from there. It's a solid seed to a larger idea, if you decide to keep going with it!

Really, really great work -- I will enthusiastically recommend this to the rest of my team!

ACCIDENTAL EXISTENTIAL by slovnoslomo 2018-04-26T14:47:52Z

Smart and funny, love the dark humor throughout. Really great sound work, too -- unsettling, grabbing, and effective for the tone. Solid genre mash-ups as well! Excellent work!

Fallen Leaves by LemonBalmGames 2018-04-26T14:41:40Z

Strong atmosphere and tone, and the surreal visuals and music matched the concept well. I recognized the Unity first-person controller, which works well and is solid in its performance, but I would recommend turning off the footstep noises, which I thought distract from the softer tone of the game. If you do want them there, I might at least make them quieter.

I was able to complete the game, but I would perhaps make the platforming jumps just *slightly* less difficult, to make the game finishable by more people. I missed the Sprint feature the first time through, and died a couple of times trying to blink with just the standard move speed. Perhaps a reminder with an on-screen visual as people approach the harder jumps?

Overall, a good concept and a great atmosphere. I'll go with the other reviewer's word, "oneiric" as well! =)

Rogue Ball by ctran13 2018-04-27T18:38:21Z

Really clever idea, and it was fun to play. It has a rewarding learning curve, where it starts to feel more fun the more comfortable you get with the lining up/kicking/moving. Loved the brooding roguelike atmosphere, too. The graphics were simple, of course, but it definitely did the job. Fun game!
