LD40 — The more you have, the worse it is

Spring Clean – DO NOT CROSS by blinry 2017-12-18T12:19:36Z

I love love love the sound effects and especially the music on this one! The music reminds me of Stardew Valley for some reason.

The graphics are cute too, but the room could be a bit more decorated (rugs, furniture, doors, windows). The critters could use animated walk cycles. And pixel sizes should be more consistent.

On the first level, it's a simple matter of:

1. Turn on Roomba. 2. Pick up cat. 3. Wait. Then wait some more.

Of course, that stops working soon... And because the Roomba is so stupid, it's as much about herding the roomba as about herding cats :) My main gripe with the gameplay is that it's pretty random, especially in the later levels. But I can hardly blame you for that, because it fits in very well with the theme (and indeed, our own game has a similar thing).

Happy Chicken Farm by FrozenFractal 2017-12-15T07:27:52Z

@PUR3

> I’d say cleaning up gets a bit annoying though, I’d have to just spam the space key at times lol.

Well, the more you have, the worse it gets... Have you tried the concrete floors? They're much easier to clean, although the chickens aren't exactly fond of them.

Happy Chicken Farm by FrozenFractal 2017-12-22T15:31:52Z

@HuuvaKodia Thanks for the detailed feedback! Pretty much all these were things we wanted to do but didn't have time for. We could totally have planned better. Especially sickness would fit in well with the theme and enhance the mood, if unhappy chickens would get sick more easily.

Happy Chicken Farm by FrozenFractal 2017-12-23T16:49:09Z

@papaver Congrats! The inability to keep your chickens happy is kind of the point of this game... wouldn't fit in with the theme otherwise!

Happy Chicken Farm by FrozenFractal 2017-12-27T09:59:36Z

@m-1 Thanks for the feedback! Of course with that many chickens, you can't keep them all happy. "The more you have, the worse it is." On the other hand, if you do keep fewer, but happier chickens, you will find yourself well past your deathbed before you have enough dough to retire. We like to think that this is at least somewhat realistic, and part of the reason why we see so much animal mistreatment these days.

I'm not sure know what's up with the sound. Surely Safari supports mp3? It might have helped if we provided .ogg format too, but it's a bit late in the game for that now.

Fuurbal by Zathnic 2017-12-17T16:17:00Z

Haha, great concept! I'm not sure the left/right rolling adds much value; there doesn't seem to be any use for bouncing up whilst moving sideways as well. But it sure looks cute and funny :)

Also, I love the music!

Crunch Time by gelisam 2017-12-17T15:42:38Z

Great puzzle game!

Graphics: Really relay the whole "corporate" feeling, with quasi-cheerful fonts, PowerPointy transitions, and meaningless squares.

Sound: The background noise cut out at some point and didn't come back. The typing noises are good, but seem to clip a bit?

Gameplay: It's hard! But fair. The explanations could be better, but once I understood the concept, it was good. But still sometimes something won't fit, and I'm not entirely sure why. I really love how you have to go back and modify previous solutions!

One Final Task by HuvaaKoodia 2017-12-22T16:34:20Z

Great puzzle game! The mechanics are introduced very well in simpler puzzles, after which they are used in a harder one. I only failed to solve the final puzzle, but that's mostly my own fault I think. One minor complaint would be that the walls mean insta-death, rather than just stopping the crates as one would expect.

I absolutely love the AI character; it adds so much charm to an otherwise fairly dry game.

The sound effects are nice. Pity there is no music, but there's only so much one can cram into a weekend eh?

Nuclear Arms 5: Orphan Overdrive by Logicon211 2017-12-14T17:14:47Z

This game is completely insane, and I'm loving every bit of it! There's just so much to love: a weird and crazy intro, smooth controls, polished but readable graphics, wacky physics, and a catchy soundtrack to round it all off. Fantastic!

Like a Boss Rush by dcolgan 2017-12-14T16:41:13Z

Funny! Love the hand-drawn artwork. The hints are necessary though -- and even then, I couldn't get past where it says "Run underneath him". I tried all variants of "run" I could think of.

Save your gold by Minemes 2017-12-17T15:28:12Z

Overall: A fun game, I enjoyed playing it.

Graphics: The models look nice, although the UI could do with some more polishing; even a different font would go a long way.

Sound: The bfxr sound effects are a bit jarring, but the music is nice. Also great that you managed to put adaptive music into it!

Gameplay: Overall well executed, with no bugs to speak of. But there is a fundamental problem: if you keep investing your gold into defenses right away, you never have much, and so you never get any serious opposition. From a gameplay perspective, it might be better to tie the "greed" meter to _income level_ instead (gold per second). There should be increasing costs or diminishing returns on tower range; right now you can just blast all robots before they come within shooting range.

Honey Empire by chriiis88 2017-12-17T16:09:40Z

Nice one! Cute graphics overall, especially with the season progressing, and the winter hats are really adorable.

It doesn't really fit in with the theme though: it gets better (easier) the more you have. A winning strategy is to keep selling all your honey in winter, strikes be damned, buying all the upgrades in order, and then buy as many bees as you can in spring.

On the subject of keeping animals, you might find some interesting parallels between your game and ours :)

Deadly Diver by Ethan Kennerly 2017-12-18T12:30:15Z

Super, super polished! Dark graphics, and really atmospheric sound effects to complement them.

Gameplay is well designed: you have to choose your path carefully to get down _and_ back up, and anything that goes wrong is entirely your own fault.

The level feels fair and well balanced; too bad there's only one of it.

I think there's a bug when you restart: the controls (left/right arrow keys) get more sensitive each time. Or does it depend on your highscore, to fit the theme even more? ;)

Travel Light by Shivur 2017-12-14T18:30:27Z

Could do with some sound effects. Also with better AI. Right now it's too easy to just walk backwards and make the zombies come at you one by one.

DETERMINATION by megabrutal 2017-12-18T11:53:39Z

Well, it _does_ get worse :)

Chubby by M-1 2017-12-22T16:17:45Z

Very cute! The physics are a bit weird when trying to hop up the stairs, but once I figured out the jumping, it worked okay. I do love that, unlike some other games I know, this one actually _does_ have the promised cake at the end :)

Fleet Commander by MagmaFortress 2017-12-17T16:28:01Z

This is the best entry I've played so far. If Mini Metro, Flight Control and Osmos had a baby, this is what it would look like. Super simple to grasp, yet really challenging.

I also love the graphics style: minimalist, but still pleasant to the eye.

Same goes for the sound effects: simple, but effective. Some ambient background music would really round it off.

It could make a great tablet game if the controls were single-button (tap to select, tap to steer, which also unselects).

Excellent job!

The More the Merrier by Tuomo 2017-12-18T11:39:55Z

Beautiful graphics, great font choice, and polished looks all around. It's really funny how you can stack these humans. Would be a bit better if they didn't keep walking all the time though ;)

The music does help spice things up, well chosen even if you didn't make it yourself.

Fun and interesting mechanic. I disagree with those who say that you should see the queue of passengers: much of the fun (like in Tetris) comes from having to take into account all possible future scenarios.

Maybe you could explicitly point out the Skip button in the tutorial, because some people seem to have overlooked it :) It's a bit bugged though: sometimes it makes the next passenger show up with red Xs through their body, or intersecting with another passenger.

Got 3400 points by the way. Would be nice if there was a way to retry a level from the beginning, rather than having to start all over again.

Corridor by aa4z 2017-12-22T15:42:37Z

This is a great take on the theme! It does get harder pretty quickly, and the health/armour bar should perhaps not be covered up _this_ early in the game. There's a good variety of enemies, and presumably of weapons although I didn't get far enough to try them all. Pity it lacks artwork and sound effects, but otherwise, great job!

Island Businessman by Andro 2017-12-22T15:53:43Z

The music is pretty nice, although there are some weird drumrolls at times and it doesn't really fit in with the game.

Graphics are a mishmash of different styles and perspectives. Next time, maybe you could try for more consistency, even if it means that each individual sprite would looks less nice.

Wood gathering is really tedious, and the boat doesn't make it better. In fact, it seems using the boat is actually slower than the forest?

LootOnline by totsboy 2017-12-22T16:04:08Z

Funny, and very relevant these days! The main thing I was missing was _juice_. Particles! Sounds! Sparks! Confetti! Tweens! That sort of stuff is really easy to do (in Unity as well, I assume) but adds so much to what is essentially a Skinner box (even if it is a parody of Skinner boxes).

Gold Digger by 4Knights 2017-12-17T15:55:57Z

The sprites and animations are quite coherent and lovely.

The music is really nice, and the sound effects are not too bad.

Gameplay-wise, the difficulty curve feels about right, but it could be made more interesting, for example, by slowing down movement the more coins you're carrying. This would force the player to consider returning to the truck before they have all the coins. Maybe some special single-use abilities could also help to make it more interesting, such as a shield that you can activate only briefly and needs to recharge.
