LD46 — Keep it alive

Keep Everything Alive by Steffo 2020-04-21T18:04:38Z

I got 42 points ;)

Really good touch with the sound steadily going higher and higher in pitch. Microgames are always super fun, but some of them were a little vague what to do. Keep IT alive was very funny to me. I really liked the pixel art too! Great submission!

Untitled Plant Game by ponywolf 2020-04-21T18:58:57Z

What a fun game! Reminds me of Little Shop of Horrors. I'm a sucker for quality pixel art, and you've delivered! I also love the change in the audio towards the end of the game!

If I would complain about anything it would be little nitpicky things. Entering/Leaving the house always makes the character say something about Planty. If the character says "Any bones" I wanted to feed Planty the bone weapon. Why have a dialogue system with the old man if we're not really going to use it. I don't think I ever really got hit? Why can't Planty help me find his food?

By the way, the little squash and stretch thing you did with the pixel art is so cute! It adds so much to the game for just a little tweak. Overall really great game that I think deserves some recognition!

Had some issues with the html5 cursor as other people are saying, but other than that I had a great time!

I think the audio adds a lot of the humor to this game. I literally spit out my drink when I heard "oh yeah baby :3".

I wish there was a bit more content, but I thought the maze idea was neat! The potions made the game so much more interesting once I found them, but they were temporary =.=

Comboboy by Peter Jonsson 2020-04-21T18:21:11Z

Really interesting design choices in this game! Haven't seen a puzzle game like it before. The music and SFX are a bit jarring, and I didn't really understand how the energy mechanic worked, but I finished the first couple of levels before getting stuck! Great job!

Lich Clicker by Fictions 2020-04-22T01:46:21Z

Man, what amazing art. Honestly the hand-draw style really makes this game what it is.

I think the way you ramp up the resource gathering is fantastically balanced. Did you guys actually playtest this or did you nail it first try? I think it's right in the middle between too forgiving and too grindy.

The audio (especially the lich's VA) was fantastic. I often see people throw on audio at the last minute as a sort of "oh shoot! sounds are a thing!" but it's clear you had a direction from the very beginning.

There was only one moment in the game that I was actually confused. After I got my first upgrade, I didn't really know how to access it (or that I could access it). I tried spam clicking on it, and I saw the confirmation bar fill slightly. Until the tutorial tip for holding the mouse click down appeared, I accessed my menus by rapidly mashing. Yeah... I'm not the brightest sometimes.

I would be interested to see what this game would look like with some colored-pencil textured colors, although I know that may take away a little bit from the hand-drawn aesthetic. I think it'd be worth a try!

Overall, this was a fantastic submission you should really be proud of. Great work!

Really great job! I haven't seen many Pico-8 games before, and this one is so unlike the other ones I have seen. The way the plant seems to grow is so interesting, I've got no idea how you did it! I'm not sure if there is an end state. I got a flower bloomed on the stem, but then it seemed to wilt and die despite me doing nothing differently. Overall, I'd say that I missed having some ambient bird chirping or wind blowing in the background, but I can see why you wouldn't want to implement that. Great job!

BrewMancy by Louis Hilaire 2020-04-21T21:05:16Z

Very solid game! One small bug I noticed was that the music plays over itself on a restart, which forces the player to quit. Whoever did the shaders/graphics on the potions and the game in general did a fantastic job. I did notice a couple times it was tough to tell where I was in relation to other objects just because the lack of shading on certain walls. The potions were hilarious. Never before have I thought to myself "I need the next thing I see to be a metal girder or I'm screwed. PERFECT. IN WITH THE SUGAR YOU GO."

Why Baby? by Chris Rock 2020-04-21T20:32:21Z

Oh man, I think the test of a good game is when you have that "A-ha!" moment, and this game gave that to me in full force. This game does a really good job of teaching the player to manage their resources. Having a nagging reptilian overlord sassing you while you're trying to keep track of what is ready for harvesting and what needs tending was a really great experience. The static noises whenever Serpens got angry were really fitting for a little water temper-tantrum, and I really liked it! I think the UI could've used a little bit of work, and I would've liked a sprint button + more things to do. Overall, great job!

Don't Kill Death (Or Die Trying) by MadeByChaz 2020-04-21T18:45:01Z

Wow. Talk about fantastic. I can't believe this is your first jam! The art, the audio, the humor... All were top notch. You've made something you should truly be proud of here. Congratulations on your win! ;)

Hacker Boy by Connor0Wolf 2020-04-21T21:19:50Z

Thanks so much for the feedback, @madebychaz! Something we wanted was for the player to feel a bit out of control with all the different things popping up on screen. We wanted to give you just enough information that you could fail forward. In the future, I think we just might take your advice though, it seems like lots of people are having trouble!

Cacophony: The Ballad of the Celestial Goblin-King by Renikor 2020-04-21T20:16:42Z

This really gave me old-school MUD feels. I think that a few simple tweaks could've made the game feel much better. Firstly, the UI is much too small. I didn't see the outlines for the equipment slots until my third playthrough. I seriously wished there was some kind of feedback when attacking enemies besides the dialog box. It was so small I barely noticed it, and I thought I was doing something wrong until I re-read the tutorial. Having an in-game how to play would've really helped out. The pixel art was really retro, and reminded me of old-school dungeon crawlers, but I wish there was some kind of animation, even just a slide to the next tile instead of a teleport. In the end, I wasn't able to make it passed the second floor, nutrition just goes down way too fast. Still, great job finishing, and way to nail the mood you were going for.

Time is of the Essence by primed-pixel 2020-04-21T21:16:10Z

Pretty fun way to do a collection of minigames! I think that the difficulty was a little too swingy. If you ever fell off your game you lost pretty much immediately. Great job reusing certain assets. I thought it was really smart since time was limited. If you take this project into the future, I'd consider adding a few more unique minigames. Pong & Breakout felt too similar for my tastes, but the rest were pretty interesting. I ran into the issue where I had the same two or three minigames back to back, and I only saw a few minigames once. Excellent work, you should be very proud!

Sentience Protocol by Disthron 2020-04-21T18:13:45Z

The art looks interesting, but I didn't understand what to do or how to do it. There was a blurb at the beginning of the game but it was immediately taken down. I waited three days and then the game stopped working :(

Mad Antimatter Mania by Draschel 2020-04-21T18:28:30Z

Very intense experience! I think my favorite mode was the hyper jump mode. Flying through the air while trying to carefully plan my landing was super fun. I wasn't sure if there was a second or third maze, but I mostly just enjoyed jumping over the whole thing. The few times I got a good look at the antimatter made me go :O AH. Great job!

Please! Keep me alive by Guntainment 2020-04-21T17:57:50Z

Very impressive to get all of this done in just a couple days! The audio was a bit repetitive, and the game seemed very derivative of Don't Starve, but nice job overall!
