Finally done! Who needs sleep anyway?

This has been my first Ludum Dare, please go easy on me if something is not up to standard. Have fun playing!

ollie-d 2024-04-15 04:23

The real villains were the Kevins we met along the way.

cleverdumb 2024-04-15 06:42

cool sound effects lol bit hard tho

ooboob 2024-04-15 06:46

I couldn't get the the movement to work, so I got stuck on level 3. I have a hard time really rating this, since I'm not sure if there's more later on

simontzky 2024-04-15 06:47

Pretty cool but yea struggling to finish level 2 :D

vinzbad 2024-04-15 06:49

Ah for the first levels I though I was controlling Wrathmus and got super confused. Love the voice acting!

inkweeper 2024-04-15 06:57

The movement seems to be arrow keys but not WASD.

Anyway I like the dub in :D

fredrik-andersson 2024-04-15 07:12

@Inkweeper Thanks for bringing that to light, what a legendary mindfart that was! Corrected it

fredrik-andersson 2024-04-15 07:20

@ooboob Oh, there's lots after that! :D Hmm, could be a bug you are seeing so please let me know if that's the case :) But the trick to level 3 is to lure Wrathmus up to the Top-right corner in order to pass into the open area.

caz-creates-games 2024-04-15 11:29

The art and feel of this game is fantastic! The way the player moves πŸ‘ The intro to each level πŸ‘ Building up the boss with body parts πŸ‘ Each different boss having new attack moves/patterns πŸ‘

Like some others, after a couple of minutes I couldn't get past level 3. After reading the 'hints' notes, I would say that the strategy to complete some of the levels is not very intuitive.

Also, it wasn't always obvious if my attack was going to hit (and damage) the boss. Visually, it sometimes looked like you're directly in-front of the boss, when there's actually one more space between you. Other times, it looked like there's enough space to move passed the boss, but instead you run into the boss and take damage.

Still, this is a very high quality submission, I'm really impressed. I wish I could have seen some of the later levels haha

fredrik-andersson 2024-04-15 12:05

@caz-creates-games Thanks for the heartwarming comments! Very fair feedback: - I regret some game design decisions. The idea was to make it a sweet mix between a Zelda like boss battle and a Sokobon puzzle game but I was able to come up with great staple mechanics for that in the heat of the jam. If I get to do another iteration I will probably clarify the collision and movement for the boss or rip out some of those mechanics altogether. - I'm most happy with the open levels which is kinda the opposite direction to Sokobon puzzle style :P

Keep at it, the ending should be worth it ;)

ghettobastler 2024-04-15 12:28

The art and animation are very polished, and I loved the voice acting! At first, I kept bumping into Wrathmus while trying to reorient myself, but after getting the hang of the movement I was able to clear the levels pretty consistently (also, nice ending!)

alex-mulkerrin 2024-04-15 15:02

Very high quality entry! I thought the artstyle was very nice and liked getting to assemble the monster from parts. The voiced(!) dialogue was neat too. Really interesting game concept.

josang1567 2024-04-15 16:13

Amazing voice work, the only bad thing i see is that on level 3 the demon gets stuck on the wall and the arm doesnt have a hit box so he can hit me but i canΒ΄t hit him

paprigames 2024-04-15 17:19

Haha that was great! Superb graphics and sound effects, and gameplay was nice mix of action and puzzle. I had fun playing, and that's what matter most in games! Very nice first entry, keep up the good work!

dedos 2024-04-15 18:25

Very cool, especially the voice acting! I like the idea of auto-collecting the enemy, the game is very cohesive and easy to learn

andrewkennedy 2024-04-15 21:21

Holy cow, amazing. It's your first game jam, are you kidding me?! This is the first game I've given 5 stars across the board. Not only does it have great gameplay and a solid theme tie-in, but as soon as you realize how the body parts change the boss behavior, it hooks you in and makes you really want to see all the combinations.

The _only_ bit of advice for improvement I can think of is that more variety in the level layouts would have been nice. The middle section made me really have to think about the boss patterns and the way to approach it in the limited space that was given. I would have liked more of that.

You should feel very proud of this entry. Outstanding work.

fredrik-andersson 2024-04-15 21:35

@andrewkennedy Wha, that comment sent me to warm fuzzy clouds, so heartwarming to hear! Your puzzle game stuck with me as one of the best entries so far also!

ellieraev 2024-04-15 21:57

Love the idea of having a build your own boss battle that you then get to face! Plays really well too. The way the timing works feels a lot like Necrodancer. Something that would have been nice was if the parts came with descriptions of what they add to the boss

vortexb 2024-04-15 22:39

Charming! I got stuck at level 3 since his arms blocked the doorway but i couldnt attack him. I love the idea though and was having fun. Good job!

owtuvammo 2024-04-15 22:49

This is very fun!

I will say that I could not for the life of me figure out how to get behind him and also attack as I moved up in diffulty.

All that said, you should be proud. This is a really nice entry!

frib 2024-04-16 00:01

Solid entry! I wish walking into the boss doesn't hurt you, so you can turn in place towards it. I lost a lot of health because of this :D

Very polished entry, feels very complete. Well done!

maggardjosh 2024-04-16 02:40

Voice acting! In a compo entry? Very impressive  I enjoyed the mechanics of building your own opponent, the combat reminded me a lot of necrodancer. Had a lot of fun on this entry, great job!

byazzle 2024-04-16 05:27

This is a great compo entry! Art, audio, gamefeel is all very good and the concept and mechanics are spot on for the theme. Really interesting take. Very tricky though! πŸ˜… Great work!

olddog 2024-04-16 09:34

nice game art ,design and game play, third boss is a little hard to defeat,I wish I can get some upgrade not only the enemy, love this game so much

whalejam 2024-04-16 09:54

This is really solid, love the art and the character feels great to run around. The voice acting was really funny too, great job ^^

raimondosenpai 2024-04-16 12:58

Nice art and story flow. i find it quite funny. the movement keys sometimes seems to not work, also nice idea for the voice acting

wilsk 2024-04-16 13:51

Congrats on your first LD! I really like the look of the game and the banter was fun.

It took me a while to work out I was the little guy and not the boss, given I built up the boss I thought I was playing him. I also found it fairly easy to kite the boss by standing next to them until the attack warning came up then backing off, running forward and hitting him a couple of times and rinse and repeat. Some variety in attacks moves might have helped there. I also found sometimes that I was next to the boss (facing away) and pressed the arrow key to turn to face the the boss, and ended up taking damage.I think maybe it would be better if the arrow keys first turned you towards the direction you pressed rather than moving you, but maybe I'm wrong here?

I wasn't sure how to attack the boss once pieces started getting locked. He didn't seem to take any damage, but couldn't hit me because of the kiting so it was a bit of stalemate.

Nice work!

worldofmush 2024-04-16 15:11

This is a fun game! I struggled a bit on 3rd and 4th level but had a blast! Wish I could have skipped text tho, it was going a bit slowly for me. Other than that, it's superb. Art, audio, gameplay... loved it!

fredrik-andersson 2024-04-16 15:21

Wow, thanks for all the nice comments people, I'm getting a bit overwhelmed here

@wilsk The armored piece can only be attacked from behind. I get from a lot of responses that it is a bit unclear everything :P Maybe I should make a full playthrough recording so you can see the ending if you lose patience.

fredrik-andersson 2024-04-16 20:22

I have now recorded a video for everyone that got stuck but still want to watch the ending ;) Have fun watching or playing!

kirass 2024-04-16 22:34

Cool game, I liked it!

denvil 2024-04-17 02:56

Wow, voice over in compo game. Little struggle to understand the mechanics on start but after few tries I got it.

nardandas 2024-04-17 09:37

It took me a sec to get the mechanics, but it was really cool! The ending was a really cool twist. I feel like running into the body doing damage didn't add a ton, it just made me be kind of overly-precise with my movement. I think even that would have been fine if the movement was a little snappier. Overall good job!

fredrik-andersson 2024-04-17 09:50

@nardandas Thanks for playing, I was so happy it could squeeze in at the end of the stream :) Very fair feedback. You are right, walking into the boss doesn't add any fun, it would maybe make sense if it was turn-based. Actually, maybe the puzzle direction would have worked much better if it was all turn-based.

nardandas 2024-04-17 09:53

@fredrik-andersson Maybe it's the crypt of the necrodancer conditioning me, but given the movement, I thought it *would* be turn based. It'd be interesting to see someone who hasn't played that game give it a try.

chibiata 2024-04-17 16:45

Awesome, just i did just read your comment so i thought id give your game a quick try. Very cool design! gz

rob6566 2024-04-18 12:44

This is great, especially for a compo entry. The different body parts made combat different in really interesting ways, and the voice acting was fun. Amazing entry!

recursor 2024-04-18 16:57

Very cool idea. I thought the voice-overs were nicely done and added to the game play.

laszlotimar 2024-04-19 20:36

Very nice and also one of the few fully complete games.

ellaris 2024-04-20 12:01

- Pretty interesting game, I liked choosing the different parts, but maybe there could be an explanation to each of them and a preview of the arena to help player make their choices. - I didn't like taking damage when he turned or on bumping into him. - The backstab window seemed pretty tight - It felt bad that the enemy could attack through the wall (or at least do damage).

joeshanahan 2024-04-20 16:43

This was a really creative game, and a very polished jam entry too! Some of the mechanics took a bit of time to click with me, I thought at first maybe it was one of those games where the enemies move when you move, and only being able to turn by moving was pretty unintuitive too. I wasn't totally sure if that was intentional in order to force to player to play a different way or not, but I definitely got frustrated taking damage bumping into him when I wanted to face him to attack.

Managed to work out a strategy in the end though, even if it took me a while to be able to execute on it! The picking of the body parts was an interesting way to let the player choose their own difficulty level, although it seemed like on pretty much every level there was basically only one configuration that'd be accepted, which made it feel a bit like a false choice.

But I don't mean to be so negative, I thought this was a really strong entry, it felt very complete, and had a lot of good humour too. I think it's going to score pretty well overall!

joeshanahan 2024-04-20 21:20

I uploaded my playthrough to YouTube! Hope it's useful for you!

@joeshanahan That was a blast watching :D I'm pretty sure now how the game can be massively improved :) Thanks for playing!
