Fun idea! I would never have thought a wolf could deliver letters.

august1413 2023-05-02 00:59

Really cool game! I liked how the game fluently switches between movement and battle. I did encounter an error though which aborted the game: "Variable Enemy.CurrentAttack(100008, -2147483648) not set before reading it." Otherwise I really enjoyed it!

wolfier 2023-05-02 01:01

@august1413 How frustrating, that bug is really persistent it seems considering I already fixed it twice before posting.

soulreviews 2023-05-02 01:02

That's a very smooth combat transition! Although I wish there was an in-game tutorial and a way to exit/restart when I die.

august1413 2023-05-02 01:13

@wolfier Haha I know what you mean, I had my fair share of bugs during development too :)

morepixels 2023-05-02 01:21

I was quite confused at the start, but once i figured out what i was doing, i quite emjoyed playing that!

a way to restart the game after loss would have been nice but i understand time issues and thing with a tutorial as i was a bit confused at first.

wolfier 2023-05-02 01:27

@MorePixels Ya i finished everything with about an roughly hour, and it somehow took me a half hour to submit. I'm probably gonna make it tomorrow cause i want to play people's games today!

weirdbitgames 2023-05-02 03:43

I like this! It felt good running really fast out of combat. It took me a moment (despite reading the description) to work out how to attack. I was clicking the enemies and not the attacks in the top left. A really good idea though!

sam-gorman 2023-05-02 03:52

Love how the battles are integrated into exploration! They're really fun, and the start of the show here. I wonder if there's some way you could make the exploration/delivery gameplay more interesting to go with those battles.

Nice job!

braveskin 2023-05-02 04:01

Pretty fun once I learned how to attack! It would be helpful to have some more feedback related to which attacks can be used and why. Nice music and art!

arikan 2023-05-02 04:12

Love the Concept! the combination was great too, great job

tomeyro 2023-05-02 05:55

I don't play a lot of strategy games, but the combat in this game feels totally new to me, and very very good! Nice job :)

fiinrii 2023-05-02 10:12

Love the wolfy so much. combat was fun and challenging, music was nice as well. Sometimes it's very difficult to win in some fights as enemies get to close and do to much damage making getting away impossible.

lima-victor 2023-05-02 11:27

The concept is nice and combat is unique and interesting but enemies feel unforgiving at all. Might be a good thing actually but dying without restart button doesn't feel good. Overall nice game wish you a good jam

riley9 2023-05-02 17:02

WONDERFUL!!! I love the idea and the movement is very fun and satisfying while in combat and running around. i love the sprites and the simple mechanic of using HP for your attacks =D (btw i ran into a bug: as i touched the river at the bottom of the level, i couldn't go upwards again and i had to restart the game)

xbcw 2023-05-02 19:38

I like the music and the pacing. It immediately starts exciting. The combat system was fun.

koos 2023-05-02 19:43

Looks like a really great game, and i like the turn based combat. But when I kill an enemy, and the delivery score appears, i can't get out of the screen and can't continue, so thats too bad because it looks great

damyannov 2023-05-02 19:45

Implementing a mana system rather than using health would have been good, killed myself in 1 attack XD The transition to battle was smooth and like others have said, the movement is fun and satisfying. I'd be interested in seeing where this goes outside of Ludum Dare's theme restrictions.

wolfier 2023-05-02 20:16

@Koos I'll have to look into that, the only reasons the score screen should pop up is if you go 0 in HP or run out of time. Maybe I screwed something up my combat cleanup and an attack goes off even though the enemy is dead. On another note, I added a restart button to the Post Dare version (hopefully) so you should have an out there.

@damyannov I don't think that's gonna happen, I really like making my combat systems imitate how real swordplay would come out and I think this is closest I've come (and perhaps even seen) to that and still been fun. Though I wouldn't be surprised if I added a mana system in addition to hp costs in the future.

In terms of getting yourself killed, I think of it like this: If your too exhausted to swing your sword, you start making mistakes and- oh there's a sword in your gut now.

cosmogonicfrog 2023-05-02 20:21

Some intersting mechanics in there. I like the idea of using your health for abilities although with the current balancing, it can feel pretty unforgiving to use an ability and then immediately get killed. Could be a skill issue on my end but I wonder if it would feel slightly less punishing if the health of everything is increased a bit.

Visually, it looks great! The wolf feels speedy while running around and the battlemap itself is easy to read and understand. The red areas and the enemies' pre-attack sprites make it look very clean.

paulhocker 2023-05-02 22:41

I like the idea. A couple thoughts. First, I think the play area was a little too big. After you deliver a letter I just wandered around until i found another. some indication of where the next one is would have been great. graphics were great, the wolf animation was awesome. thanks for making this game.

ordineu 2023-05-02 23:36

Interesting game! I liked how smooth the movement felt and the combat was pretty fun. I got stuck along the bottom edge though, and it wouldn't let me move up past that point.

alyd-asmar 2023-05-03 00:29

Fun game! It took me some time to understand what was going on because I didn't get that combats where turn-based, so I just kept on moving very fast trying to escape attacks that were also very fast :joy: Apart from this little feedback I'll just say I had a fun time like the others, and I quite like the wolf sprite :)

blue-pin-studio 2023-05-03 01:35

I didnt really understand how to play. I ran and i ran, then got killed by ninjas. I tried using an attack, but that reduced my health and didnt really help with the ninjas :(

jahwffrey 2023-05-03 02:52

Very cool combat mechanic! I love it that it showed you what attack would happen beforehand and it was up to you to get out of the way/not get yourself into that situation in the first place, even if I was pretty terrible at actually accomplishing that. Well done!

martta 2023-05-03 13:45

Fun game. I did not like the fact that the attack consumed HP. It is like punishing you for fighting, but also you are not able to run away. The music + fast movement felt good. Graphics were ok and did the job. Really liked how you showed where the enemies are going to attack next turn. Also overall the grid based battle was very well made and polished. The gameplay loop was little bit weird: You need to find a letter that is in a random place and then deliver it to a random place. Feels like that the pick up point or delivery point should always be the same or at least some actual place like building.

allosius 2023-05-03 15:55

Very interesting and nice concept, I really like the tactical side that you wouldn't necessarily think of with this theme. On the other hand, it really lacks too many feedbacks, and the fact that you can only move with W, A, S, D is quite frustrating, I would have liked it if you could move with the directional arrows.

leorid 2023-05-03 22:42

Once I understood that there is no mana bar, but that attacks cost health and can be selected with the mouse, I really enjoyed the game. At the beginning I was quite confused that I even have to use the mouse. Some attacks are unavoidable, but you can save up HP to survive them. The only thing that I didn't really find out is how much damage an attack will deal. For this I wished for some indicator that shows the damage of a certain attack on a field (or over the heads of enemies - but it was sometimes hard to see which fields are double-red (2 enemies attacking the same field)).

I really enjoyed it, but enjoying combat so much, I actively run into enemies, even when I had no visible bonus from it. Would be cool if clearing enemies had some positive effects on the other game loop (or negative effects other than death when a fight is lost). Winning a fight could result in increased walk speed. Losing a fight could result in losing the letter (and having to grab a new one).

Just some random ideas after having spent a few cool minutes with the game. ^^

pixelhurricane 2023-05-04 00:14

Hey I quite loved the concept for this game! The combat is very interesting, balancing using your HP to attack and playing passive to heal. I like that the enemies are bound to the same rules so that you can dodge their attacks and hit them when their weak to preserve HP. great game loop, I'd love to see a post jam version with an expanded moveset, more enemy variety and maybe a leveling system if that's the style you're going for.

A few points of criticism, the letter delivery minigame feels very detached from everything else. perhaps the letters could be rewards for defeating enemies to encourage interacting with them, maybe enemies are obstacles that will take your letters away if you get hurt. Something that ties together the two elements of your game. also an indicator for where the small letters spawn would be helpful, even if they only appeared nearby.

Overall I thought it was a fun game with a lot of potential! I hope you keep working on it!

adam-gallina 2023-05-04 05:23

The combat was really unique, I had a lot of fun playing!

dan-allison 2023-05-04 17:53

The combat system is really interesting to me. I like the balance of deciding to move/gain health versus getting a hit in. Maybe think the player should have had a bit more health but I think this is the start of a really cool battle system. Loved the art too, big fan of the wolf sprite and animation especially.

beebster-games 2023-05-04 17:54

The game wasn't bad. The fighting needs some work. The music was good, the dog animations are excellent.

Thanks for the play

gamedocs 2023-05-04 18:28

I really love the wolf! Great job! :)

wolfier 2023-05-04 18:34

@dan-allison I probably will increase the player's health, I was feeling it to during design that it was to low and that i should change and then... didn't.

@beebster-games Can you be a bit more specific on what doesn't work in the combat?

cabritta 2023-05-04 21:11

Struggled a little to understand how the combat really worked. My first play was mostly running around enemies so i didn't have to fight! Overall it was a fun little game. Good work!

0x-void-x0 2023-05-05 17:43

The gamplay mechanics are incredibly satisfying, I just ignored the task and kept picking fights with knight lol, it's so much fun dodging death by one tile then smashing them one by one, the enemy moves variations also keeps the game from getting repetitive, the art style and music fit the mood really well, but the best part for me was the combat, it's just so good!

cheesepencil 2023-05-05 19:14

Please publish a web build!

mpk90 2023-05-05 19:27

Interesting gameplay. the more rounds i played, the more fun it was. It's very hard in the beginning and it feels good to get better and better.

zgragselus 2023-05-08 10:16

I had problems with combat, but you could avoid it to some extent (which allowed me to do few deliveries).

The run was swift, had a nice response - combat did show where enemies attack, but I couldn't figure out how to fight back (and almost always was instantly dead - so it was extremely unforgiving). I tried getting away, but that doesn't work.

Overall it's enjoyable and somewhat fast paced (despite being turn based) jam entry. Good job!
