Had a lot of fun with this, the addition of the "self-destruct" buttons is great!

eerongal 2022-10-03 17:35

Fun little game. The swapping of the controls gets a bit annoying/hard to parse sometimes, but that's also where the challenge comes in, i suppose. Without that it would be really easy!

laurahur 2022-10-03 17:56

hahaaaa that was fun. I like the theme and the litle messages at the end of each level were a nice funny touch. It gets really tricky and now my brain hurts from trying to remember what key does what

kosmosael 2022-10-03 18:50

Very fun game, looooooove the graphics that remind me of Zelda on GameBoy :)

gord10ahmet 2022-10-03 20:57

Loved the visuals and the idea!

aaron-smith 2022-10-03 21:16

this messed with my head so hard! fun idea well executed!

woahitsjeff 2022-10-03 22:04

Great concept, everything holds itself together very nicely. Loads of fun too. Thanks for sharing!

thegamearchitect 2022-10-03 22:36

cool game, well done!

I hated how the controls kept changing. I liked the look of the game, but got tired of trying to figure out which way to be able to walk with the key changes suddenly. Music was nice.

isaac-hisey 2022-10-04 02:35

Overall: Fun and interesting. Beat all three levels. Last level made the witch mess her self a good few times. I don't think a self destruct button should ever be a previous movement button when the change happens.

Fun: The changing of keys was hard to parse with how quickly it left the screen. Sometimes The witch would mess herself as the keys changed because a movement key was changed to a pant explosion key.

Innovation: Very innovative!

Theme: Change keys every ten seconds :ballot_box_with_check:

Graphics: Love the monochrome 1 bit-y style.

Audio: Love the little effects and the music!

Humor: Witch needs to boom boom. Make potion and run into everything in the house. lel. Not bad

Mood: Good, same as above.

Thanks for all the comments, and indeed especially the last map maybe got a bit too much a rage-game kind  So I agree with @eerongal and @himecrycho maybe more attention should be put on balancing this out. The idea actually came from a video I saw a few years back, when a prof changed the direction a bikes wheel needs to be steered was so difficult to do for the brain. I wanted to test the same concept with arrow keys. Yes, turned out difficult enough indeed.

hotaloca 2022-10-04 05:30

@isaac-hisey Thank you very much for the quality feedback. Agree with your self-destruct button reco - actually the reason why the escalation mark got into the game was because I also felt its unfair to the player that the button map changes and then you die. Your reco actually is better though. It could have been a simple change to put in. Anyway - next time better

Love it - great graphics, music and theme. The key change idea was cute, although it would have been good to be able to see the current keys all the time.

lespaul59 2022-10-04 10:37

Nice little game! Love the overall aesthetics and the humor. Also, the idea of switching mechanics is a really cool idea, :) Great Job!

matt-ravenhall 2022-10-04 10:57

Cute take on the theme, and really nice movement confusion puzzle game.

I agree with @rob6566 that I'd like to have seen the movement keys all the time.

venfola 2022-10-04 11:04

Overall quite nice, graphics and sounds are terrific, and it's fun! Might be more juicy with better feedbacks when using wrong buttons or adding stuff to the potion. Changing the controls is a good idea but you should keep them displayed as it's already hard enough to switch from one to an other.

last-angle 2022-10-04 19:52

I love the graphics and sounds in your game! It's a fun and funny game, I like how you can bump into the stuff in your house and break it (or make the cats meow). It took me a while to figure out why I would suddenly be game over sometimes, I didn't see the banned keys prompts at first as I was so busy memorizing the new movement keys :)

pinkemma 2022-10-05 00:58

Love it! The graphics are endearing, the sound and music gives a nice temp, and the mechanic was neato!

picttarge 2022-10-05 01:12

Great game! Key changes messes with my head in a good way - but then hiding the keys and forcing it to be remembered is hard! Funny when there's a key change so that 'down (S)' then becomes 'self destruct' - whoops

indigo 2022-10-06 18:23

I hate you so much for this.

Very fun game, really cool pixel art, I love the palette. The sound effect when you step on the cats is hilarious. I broke a lot of glassware too.

Overall very few bad things to say about this, the one gripe I do have is that it is not easy to tell ahead of time when the controls will change. This wouldn't be such an issue if it didn't sometimes happen while you're already pressing the key that will kill you next. Oops! Because that's unfair and frustrating to the player, you should have either given a clearer video or audio warning before the change happens, such that the player can react and stop moving, or made sure that the kill buttons are never prior movement buttons.

The other issue is that the "flavor text" before a level starts isn't displayed long enough to read. Since you already have a skip button, the timer was probably superfluous to begin with, and such a short one is annoying.

Nice soundtrack, on the other hand. Very solid entry overall.

waffleworksgames 2022-10-06 19:21

Really neat game, the graphics were super charming! I liked the concept of switching up the controls, but sometimes I would forget what they were once the popup disappeared. Other than that a really solid game. Nice job!

littleblackdog 2022-10-07 04:44

Haha, what a funny and cute game!! I didn't understand the control switching at first and definitely blew myself up a couple times lol. But I got it eventually and had fun!! Nice job!

solah 2022-10-07 10:24

Very good game, it is quite hard but I love the changing controls system which make the game chaotic

other-thinking 2022-10-10 18:05

Very solid contribution! I may go back later to try and beat at least the first level, once my brain is more familiar with the way it works. I found the mix of 1 bit graphics and more modern music and sound effect pretty funny and original, nice idea!

bentglasstube 2022-10-10 23:56

It took me a little while to understand what was going on, but once I figured it out this was one of my favorite games I've played this LD.

It seemed to only be an issue on the third stage, but it was hard to take note of the pants-pooping keys in the short time they showed on screen, so I wound up "letting loose" quite a few times. It was always entertaining and made me want to try again though, so I wouldn't really call it a critique. The art style was top tier, and the music and sound effects really rounded out the feel of the game. I would maybe add a small sound when the controls are about to change in addition to the visual feedback. Overall a very well done and polished game. My biggest complaint is that it was too short.

jimbly 2022-10-11 02:46

Definitely took me quite a while to figure out what was going on. Didn't have enough time to read the intro text on each of the levels (but, I failed them quickly enough to finally get a chance to read it, though it didn't really help explain anything ^\_^). Eventually I figured out how things worked. It was really unclear what I was carrying and what I needed to do, or even how I lost, as usually I would just instantly lose as I was holding down WASD, and it took me quite a few losses to even have a chance to realize the controls changed mid-game - I actually just thought the game was buggy, the first time I lived for more than 10 seconds and then the controls seemed to stop working ^\_^. I would have liked some more feedback about what was going on and why. Once I got used to it, was kinda fun. I quite like the style, visuals and audio both nice. I did managed to beat all 3 levels, after many losses =).

dimaswift 2022-10-11 21:58

visual style is amazing, it kept me going even though I had no idea what I was doing in the beginning lol

vidarn 2022-10-17 19:18

The graphics were very cute, I liked all the little details. I also liked that the house expanded between the levels. Changing input keys was an interesting mechanic to build the game around. I found it quite hard to parse the prompt in time when the input changed, but I still had fun. Some of the input variations were pretty mind bending.
