Not sure why but on opening the game, it crashed and the .exe application is automatically deleted

zapturk 2021-10-04 03:42

Neat idea

tattomoosa 2021-10-04 03:53

I liked the dynamic music. The maze was maybe a little complicated... or maybe I just have a terrible memory.

python-b5 2021-10-04 03:56

@mahjoub Your antivirus is blocking the game. Try disabling it

@tattomoosa Make sure you check the map in the castles - it shows the whole maze for you to plan the route! Just press Z while standing next to the table.

moonblast 2021-10-04 22:11

I love the map and maze, but the monster seems to be moving a little too fast hahaha

python-b5 2021-10-04 22:24

@moonblast The monster is supposed to move faster than you! Make sure you're pushing it away and using flares. :)

seam00se 2021-10-05 01:21

I really like the trade off of having the torch and the push attacks. Like, you can recharge the push meter to try again, but if you are carrying a gem you can't use it. Or, you can use a torch whenever, but only once. It adds a neat bit of strategy that I really like.

python-b5 2021-10-05 01:23

@seam00se I'm glad you liked it! :)

tarren 2021-10-05 06:11

For some reason the game crashes before finishing the opening dialogue. I really like the music, the concept, and the pixel gothic font chosen for the title.

sslees 2021-10-05 06:16

Really like how the font and music and theme all tied together well. Monster was a little too fast for me, but was fun to get a few gems. Really like that dying only sent you back to the most recent castle, not the beginning.

curleysam 2021-10-05 11:07

Very cool entry. Once I figured out how to use the smaller gaps to get the minotaur away from where I was going, it ended up having some strategy haha. The music and mood were nice too :) Good entry

python-b5 2021-10-05 11:12

@tarren Could you share your system specs? I'd love to help :)

ghost20000 2021-10-05 11:53

Really liked the game! Awesome premise and cool graphics! The castles really reminded me of the original King's Quest. I think the maze tiles could have used more contrast though.

The maze was REALLY difficult, I didn't finish the entire game (although I really wanted to) just because I felt it was almost unfair. The pushing mechanic was a little inconsistent and it was very hard to pick up the flare after putting it down.

The audio was cool, the dynamic music was especially awesome.

Overall, great work! Sad I didn't get to see the ending...

ihaveaninkling 2021-10-05 14:01

Awesome game and interpretation on the theme! It took me a while to figure out that the minitour couldn't go through the small gaps which changed the way I approached the puzzle. Picking up the torch was a little tricky. The art was awesome and complemented the game well!

chesschaser 2021-10-05 14:05

Loved the pixel art and the concept is great! Brilliant entry!

estellad 2021-10-05 14:14

The minotaur moves so quickly... Maybe it's a little hard to understand the rules. Really loved the 8-bit style music and art. Nice entry!

python-b5 2021-10-05 14:49

Thanks everyone for the feedback! I will post a small balance patch later today to adjust the hitboxes (easier to pick up flare, push minotaur away).

im-annika 2021-10-05 19:05

loved the music and graphics the most!

samuli 2021-10-05 21:25

Antivirus flagged as virus for me too, but game played fine after whitelisting. Couldn't get far as the game was quite though.

python-b5 2021-10-05 21:30

@samuli Unfortunate it's being flagged - will try to switch compilers in GameMaker to see if that fixes it.

Update - just published a compiled version on itch.io! Hopefully it fixes any issues :)

mhorth 2021-10-05 23:23

Nice job, and congrats on your first LD jam entry! I quickly realized that I'd have to be more strategic about my paths and abilities than just using them the first time the minotaur saw me.

One suggestion for future games, it's always nice to be able to quit the game. Pause menus with a button are an obvious way to do it, but even just a key that quits is fine.

python-b5 2021-10-06 00:08

@mhorth Yeah, that might be a good idea for next time. Luckily Alt+F4 works fine on this game :)

blue-pin-studio 2021-10-06 04:04

Cool entry! I tried so many times to get the pink gem and bring it to the castle but no luck. So i guess i got stuck on level 2. Perhaps we need more options for escaping the minotaur, perhaps if he didn't always know where i was, or sometimes if he went the wrong way that would help a lot. Good job on the submission

javicoder 2021-10-06 11:56

I liked it, it was fun to play, a bit challenging because the enemy is going a bit fast. Visually very good, and sound too. So well done.

joseph-manley 2021-10-06 23:13

Very difficult, but fun!

joel-davis 2021-10-07 06:11

very fun and surprisingly polished. it was a bit too hard for me though

willoxs 2021-10-07 13:12

i recommend a simpler control scheme. arrow keys are awkward to use if you are used to wasd and many people dont know this but many european keyboard use the qwertz system that means that z and y are switched. that is why x and z make for a bad pairing.

sam-gorman 2021-10-07 13:46

@willoxs Sorry you had trouble with the controls! I had no idea about the QWERTZ layout. We could definitely add a way to swap out keyboard controls in a post-jam version. We picked arrow keys and X/Z as they are common keybinds for 2D games on keyboard - WASD is most often used for 3D - but you are right that it would be a good idea to accomodate those who would prefer a different control scheme.

A Gift in Good Faith also has controller support if you're interested. Controls are joystick to move, A to interact or place a flare, and X to push the Minotaur away.

Thanks so much for playing and rating! :)

almightyzentaco 2021-10-07 15:04

I liked the idea behind the game - avoid a minotaur who stalks you while trying to collect a treasure. This could have been improved by having the gem randomly spawn in a location each attempt. The minotaur was extremely difficult to avoid, and it might have been nice to have more tools in your toolbelt for dealing with him. Nice entry, thanks for making this game!

xcvzxc 2021-10-07 16:34

Great game but unfortunetely I havent manage to beat the third jam... I tried everything but when I use torch first then I dont have push later, and when I use push first then I dont have time to wait for spikes.

juniora 2021-10-07 19:36

Really liked the map design! Made it pretty easily to navigate when looking for a gem, a skip dialogue button would've been very nice upon respawn though, overall good game :)

sam-gorman 2021-10-07 20:53

Thanks for playing @juniora! We could definitely add a skip button in a post-jam update.

kamuniaft 2021-10-08 08:30

Great job! I liked soundtrack and visuals. Narrative about kings sending u back and forth between castles nicely blends with the gameplay structure. Minotaur itself feels too quick and unbalanced to me.

python-b5 2021-10-08 11:48

@kamuniaft Glad to hear you enjoyed it :)

The Minotaur is supposed to be faster than you - the later levels especially are especially puzzle-y, and may take a while to figure out. We might've made the difficulty curve too harsh, though!

Thanks for the feedback!

awesomealliterationalliance 2021-10-08 16:44

Graphics look cute and the story sounded interesting, but I could have done with a little less text. Good Job on the map design.

riper 2021-10-08 18:21

Pixel art is love! Try adding light next time, it might be more interesting)

quoc 2021-10-08 18:26

Great game. It was interesting and fun to play. I liked the graphics a lot. They are so cute :)

denilseven 2021-10-09 02:36

man the game art is so beautiful! i really had fun playing this game

request 2021-10-09 03:05

Nice work, this was a challenging game! I like the art for this one!

youk 2021-10-09 03:25

I love your graphic and audio, simple but create a very dramatic atmosphere. The maze was difficult but this difficulty forces me to plan how to move. Very fun to play.

matias-correa 2021-10-09 12:24

Very hard game, I'm able to get a gem but can't get to the castle, minotaur is too fast!! Perhaps it could have an easy mode where minotaur is slower or I can push him away more than once. Nice submission!

markveligod 2021-10-09 14:28

Oh, yes, with such a game, I was drinking all Saturday!

zimny11 2021-10-09 22:49

Nice art style and music. Controls feel good too. It is a really challenging game. When I first time got to the gem I was so happy, and then I brought it to the wrong castle XD Good job on the game!

sslees 2021-10-10 01:06

Just a thought, I’ve seen gifs in your other posts, and the Minotaur looks slower than when I played it. I think a lot of people felt it was too fast to escape. Is it possible that the Minotaur speed is somehow tied to frame rate, so on some machines it runs a lot faster if it’s playing at say 120 FPS? Idk just a thought, since it would explain why some people found it very difficult. For me, I was only able to get a couple of the gems.

python-b5 2021-10-10 02:10

@sslees No, the game is capped at 60 FPS. The Minotaur should be moving slightly faster than you; if it's not working that way, just let me know and I'll fix it! :)

denzil-gomes 2021-10-10 14:14

Nice idea, reminded me of Hunter Hunted, a game I used to play a long time back in which you're trying to escape a minotaur. I think it would work better if you could dumb down the minotaur A.I. a little so he doesn't always take the shortest route to you. Perhaps also having the dialogue auto skip on restart. I like having the recharging push ability but found I couldn't use it more than once, as when I pick up the gem I am unable to use it...perhaps being able to put the gem down?

The music worked well and I like how it adapted! Going back and forth in the same area helped to familiarise the map too. I find the flare an interesting ability I think if you could throw it over walls it would have a lot more potential.

Overall though good job on getting all of this in, you managed to wrap it up neatly.

P.S sound didn't work the first time around, I had to go back and try again after reading the comments. No idea why

paulhocker 2021-10-10 22:58

really great use of the theme and the game is very solid. nice little adventure/quest system and is executed well. great job!

r3l0ad1 2021-10-15 20:35

Cool game! Nice mechanics and the artstyle is good. great work!

coolestdoggie 2021-10-16 12:27

Nice graphics, buddy! It was a little hard for me cause the monster was too fast and I died 14 times( I really want to win, but I couldn't...

mediflect 2021-10-16 22:27

I like the presentation here - it's got that simple retro 2D vibe. The graphics are simple but easily readable, and the audio complements it well. The flare mechanic is more useful than it initially appears - I didn't realize that it just changes the minotaur's pathing target at first, but once I did I started trying to put as much distance between myself and the flare to get as much out of it as I could. The minotaur is certainly an oppressive enemy, and I like how the drum beat kicks in when it gets close to you. Like some other commenters have said, the game is just a bit too hard - either the minotaur's pathing could be adjusted (so it doesn't home in on you perfectly every time), or it could move a little slower so as not to be so punishing. I only got the first gem and tried to get the second one about 8 times before giving up. Nice job overall though - the game is very polished and plays well!

varundevs 2021-10-17 02:34

nice one

dgspitzer 2021-10-18 00:50

Super fun to play! It's like a time-loop puzzle you have to repeat again and again to get more progress each time. Very interesting gameplay, good job!

dreamerflow 2021-10-20 11:23

Good game, i like the concept, a little hard but fun!

kantanloop 2021-10-20 20:54

Cool concept, and a nice, cohesive visual style! I liked having to plan out the route to each gem ahead of time and with the limited tools you have. I really liked the change in music when the minotaur is on screen too. It is a bit difficult though, the minotaur's movespeed is fine but I felt like I should have been able to walk past the minotaur whenever they're in the stunned/distracted state instead of dying as usual. Great work regardless!

cody-miner 2021-10-21 14:23

What a difficult puzzle! Some of those torch traps were kinda precise to set up, but definitely rewarding when they paid off. Great music as well, gj!

sinci1 2021-11-04 11:56

This was fun, very challenging, but fun! The theme is a bit loose but honestly this was fun, it was very challenging at first, even later on too, but figuring out the strats on how to time it right was engaging. And also thank you for adding the small half tunnels, at first the push and torch feature wasn’t enough but the half tunnels really added to the game. Overall a challenging and fun experience, props for finishing!

Thanks to the skill of jewelers, the gold chain has become an important style-forming element.
