Really gorgeous art!

tvorojok 2020-10-05 21:14

So nice cats :3

tamail 2020-10-06 11:38

I didn't quiet understand the mechanics (seems like a feedback for when you do well is missing?) but I loved the idea and, above all, the art. The art is so gorgeous!

frederik-boye 2020-10-06 11:43

Great artwork! It would be great if "enter" also worked after writing a word because instinctively you press that to, well, enter a word. It quickly felt like the goal was just to increase the amount of abuse the cat could withstand, and not really change or fix the issue, just hardening him for the bullying, which felt a little sad.

redunca 2020-10-06 16:29

@frederik-boye I understand your feeling towards the issue of bullying. Sadly, we didn't have the time to properly address this and didn't want to half-ass things on this subject. We also tought that working on yourself is the first step, working on others is not always possible as a lot of people are going to be mean in your life. So far the best way is to remove toxic people entirely from your life, but since that is not always possible...

saltfactory-studio 2020-10-06 17:08

Really liking the art style you have going on here, very unique. Although the game was a bit confusing at first in my opinion, but I eventually get the general idea and I think it's pretty good. Great work.

iron-leonem 2020-10-06 17:13

*Exhales* man, there's a lot to unpack in this one. Okay, so your sound design and visuals were great- even lacking in animation, you got your idea across and it played well with your theme. Also, either cut the volume to half, or let the players control the volume. I think I got the gameplay, but having some kind of feedback when you successfully counter an argument would be really helpful. The speed of the game was highly punishing- if possible, I'd slow it down and start speeding it up as the player starts succeeding. For a weekend project, this was a great product, and you did really well.

Now, for the bugbear. Normally, I don't focus much on the themes explored in a narrative, as we really only have 72 hours to deliver on a product, but this depiction of bullying and resisting same is... a little reductive and hollow. Kind words don't counter harsh ones, and "bullies" always find new and creative ways to inflict harm on their victims- I use quotes because the definition becomes highly broad.

I don't want you to take that as criticism... well, it is criticism, but you shouldn't feel bad for it. It's good to want to take on these important subjects, but it's also important to analyze the result, learn from it, iterate, and continue to improve. Normally when I say "this is a great start", I'm referring to the code or the design of a game, but when I tell you "this is a great start", I hope you know I'm talking about the themes you're exploring in your mechanics. I think it's great to try to make games that dissect important subjects, and I sincerely hope you continue to do that. :)

m7rk 2020-10-06 17:15

sick art style, but i don't understand the main gameplay loop. I can type the words but nothing happens. When i press backspace to fix a mistake in typing, that freezes the game so i had to avoid that

dexort 2020-10-06 17:25

Thank you for your game, I had a great pleasure. Very original concept, but for me it was a bit challenging because I'm not a native English speaker and don't type that much in English. But I tried to keep up and had fun :)

vivien-fargette 2020-10-06 17:38

I agree a lot with Iron Leonem's comment so I will avoid going further into the theme of the game aside from reiterating that I hope that you will continue to try to touch people on important subjects like these with you games.

On the gameplay side, I wonder, was there a way to win against the bully or was it just made to delay the loss? When typing, a feedback about succeeding or missing would have been nice and a way to correct (with backspace for example) would have been nice. Other than that, it is pretty nice to play.

I really loved the art and music of the game and overall it is a good game.

steventus 2020-10-06 17:39

Hey @redunca , I think this game was a bit of a mixed bag from me. I'm going to focus more on the gameplay as a whole first. Let's start with the positives:

1) There is definitely good art here and it works to tell the story you want to tell. The amount of effort is something worth celebrating!

I do have more qualms than I have positives about this game so let's dive right into the most important ones:

1) The game pacing is too slow. I think if you had more words to type out, it'll feel much more fun to play. Remember, it's a game, while a narrative is good (especially for the narrative you are conveying) - a player that quits early on will not experience that narrative at all. Consider making it so that you start with 3 words, and every interval, you learn 3 more new words. This way, the player can feel like they are progressing faster - especially given the current slow pace of the game.

2) I am generally confused of the goal of the game too. Even if the theme is 'stuck in a loop', there is always a goal the players must strive towards. This game seems to present the protagonist in a very passive sense, not really doing anything.

While it makes sense in a narrative standpoint, it just doesn't completely make for a completely good immersion/fun factor in the game. I think this is entering subjective territory, but you should revisit how to frame the game to give the protagonist a more active role.

I think this can become something important in the future with the narrative it is trying to tell. Keep it up!

walkingtall85 2020-10-06 17:48

Great art, interesting take on the depression spiral. Liked it but is there an actual way to find words for the notebook than from other people?

bereg 2020-10-06 20:04

That's a therapeutic game for sure. I love the art and music is just fabulous! The narrative is smart and thought-provoking, that's the kind of games I'm into. Thank you. That was a very interesting and emotional experience to play your game.

dubdavis 2020-10-06 20:21

good looking game and very interesting concept with good intentions. Maybe visual or auditory reward for doing something right would be a good addition to the game.

erlioniel 2020-10-06 20:30

Hi, I'm actually want to say that have absolutely the same feelings as @steventus above.

Just to be fair I want to additionaly say that I'm impressed by the art. That's absolutely stunning result.

emily-pitcher 2020-10-07 03:47

I second @steventus as well! I think the art is beautiful, but I got stuck at one part of the game and the narrative is a bit confusing.

cubiclaw 2020-10-07 08:10

Excellent art and a unique take on the theme:thumbsup:

I really like the first scene that teaches you how to play the game.

I've learned that I am really bad at typing word "beautiful" quickly:smile:

ommadawn 2020-10-07 08:22

Really good art, problem is that nothing happens after I type the first word. I pressed space (le mot était barré) then nothing :/

sarafilipa 2020-10-07 18:37

So, a few things:

The art and audio and overall mood of this game is stunning and precious. The concept is also quite unique, so well done. I also think it's an interesting (albeit loose) interpretation of the theme.

I always appreciate story-driven games in game jams. Depression is not an easy subject to tackle, too. It feels like a lot of love and care went into this game. :)

Overall I really like it!

Like a lot of other commenters, I also felt a bit confused because of the lack of feedback and the gameplay felt a bit clunky, but the game has potential to be really good with some extra work. Well done. :)

oneiromancer 2020-10-07 19:02

Man, all this feels like a little too much criticism, aspecially compared to other games.

First of all, the game itself is great. Reading the comments, I think I understand the gameplay loop now, and I think it's really clever. Unfortunatelly the game has some problems with user experience, which makes playing the game a little frustrating.

To illustrate this: you have an amazing tutorial. It's clear, it communicates well what you need to do and how. And then you have the very first game screen. Suddenly things are fast and confusing, you have only one word to write, except when you write it, nothing seem to happen. I mean, it's kinda good ludonarrative, but it's also a good way to confuse the player.

But once you push through initial confusion, the gameplay becomes quite fun (although a little difficult, especially when you have sausage fingers and backspace doesn't seem to work).

jaybaus 2020-10-07 21:10

Gorgeous art style! The audio is nice too, and I thought typing the word play to start the game and introduce the game mechanics was clever and creative. I didn't really understand the gameplay mechanics when the bullies were talking to me, I was typing words from my notebook but it didn't seem to make any difference and they seemed to cross out and uncross but I wasn't sure why. Overall, a really impressive level of polish though and it had soul to it so well done :)

100th-coin 2020-10-08 06:49

I love the graphics, and I wish the game was better explained through gameplay. As others have mentioned, it's a bit confusing at first despite the explanation on the game's page. Great work on the game!

getsky 2020-10-08 17:50

I really appreciate that you went to explore the bullying theme. I wish we had more games like that so that they help people. The art is great. Great job!

meowmeowlitclub 2020-10-09 17:26

Thank you for making such meaningful game. At the beginning I didn't read the tutorial and felt confused why the girl cat was so bad. Later I understand and try to save the kid cat. But when I type the words it's a little hard if I can't use delect buttom. And when I press space nothing happens. So I am a little confused. But I would like to play again if you tell me how to play. I definitely love the graphic, the art style, the music and the theme. Hope we can explore more about this theme and let the public notice more!

harrm 2020-10-10 12:36

Great art and idea, but I don't understand how to play it and backspace is broken.

ninjacatz 2020-10-11 12:00

They bullied me. I just spoke kind words to myself, but that was not enough... I'll go cry :sadcat:

enes-ayyildiz 2020-10-13 06:57

Really nice graphics. Starting way of the game is smart idea. When I use backspace it is quit the game maybe later you will add more attributes as a post ludum dare work. Your game point out a social dailylife problem. Even for this your game is special.

mateusboga 2020-10-14 23:18

The graphics are so cute! I love the concept too, even though I suck at typing games because I type to fast and make lots of mistakes lol. I also tried at first to type the words that I thought were opposite to the insults but then I realized that didn't matter, would have been a cool idea (and make the game harder) I also wish there was an endgame, instead of the game just going forever though, unless I didn't play it for long enough lol. Great job! Also, *thoughtful

karolina-lewszyk 2020-10-16 07:51

That was so sad :( loved the art, and the idea behind it. This kitten made me write faster than I thought I could :D It's a hard subject to explore but I think you've done it very well. It ties brilliantly into the loop theme. Well done :)
