Continuously cycling through the move memory is a cool mechanic.

2020-10-05 11:49

This is very cool and similar to the idea I was thinking about (but didn't start). Nice job!

porcus-pie 2020-10-05 11:52

I enjoyed this game! It reminded me a lot of old flash games or things I would waste time on on cool maths games. The presentation was super simple but it worked really well, simple without being simplistic. The game itself was super hard, I actually got stuck on level 8 of 20, so I can't imagine how hard the rest is. The audio did get irritating after a while, being only bleeps and boops, but it fit with the style. Overall I enjoyed this game a lot, and would love to play more, if only I had the brain for it

integrated-rk 2020-10-05 11:52

Loved the game

hadryel 2020-10-06 02:08

Very interesting! Well done!

gwinnell 2020-10-06 14:26

Very enjoyable! I did feel like brute forcing it after getting stuck at level 8, but that didn't work either! :joy: Clever use of theme!

anomay 2020-10-06 16:42

Cool! Make loop a mini programming game

Ingenious, I hope it can be completed in the future!

eldar 2020-10-06 16:50

Whahaha that plot twist at the end! Loopception!

Funnily enough, there is another game somewhere in this jam (https://dumbgamer64.itch.io/a-gamedevs-nightmare) that has a robot looping through 4 commands. The feel of the game is pretty different though, and I enjoyed playing yours more. The memory-clearing spots are an interesting addition, and level 17 shows how they alone can transform this into a very different kind of puzzle. Great job!

P.S. I actually liked the audio cause I felt like I can write my own beats right inside your game :joy:

eldar 2020-10-06 16:52

@porcus-pie @gwinnell I was stuck on level 8 for a while too - if you need a hint, try figuring out the moves backwards (what has to be the last move? the one before that? etc), and remember that these moves don't have to be the last ones in the sequence of commands (because of looping). The levels after that are actually easier, they just add new mechanics!

loig 2020-10-06 17:21

@eldar Hehe, your P.S. is exactly the reason why I did this music for the title screen: after adding the sounds I noticed that the loops in the game were like little beats, which was not intended at all originally. I appreciate that I am not the only one who noticed that.

Indeed, level 8 is probably the most complicated to solve… mainly because I did not manage to find more difficult levels with the then added mechanics before the deadline. Maybe I could have put this level later in the game even if it uses only the first mechanics.

@anomay @hadryel @gwinnell @porcus-pie @neogravity @nick-barrash @integrated-rk thanks for your kind comments.

captaindreamcast 2020-10-06 18:14

Woooo that plot twist at the end, awesome! Truly stuck in a loop.

I had a few levels that I got stuck at for a while too, but figuring out the puzzle backwards like some of the other commenters mentioned already was a lot of fun. I also greatly enjoyed the new mechanics that were introduced, the boxes and the memory clearing spots, those really shuffled up the gameplay in fun ways. Like the one level with tons of memory wipes that basically turned it into a sliding ice puzzle type, I greatly enjoyed the creativity you put into making each puzzle feel unique and special and have its own kind of "twist". Something that hasn't been mentioned before in the comments that I also wanted to praise was the sound design, the rhythmic sound cues as C.U.B. MK.3 moved along its looping pattern created a nice rhythm that suited the theme well, I liked that. So yeah, great job on your game all around, had a wonderful time with it!

mutuware 2020-10-06 21:02

Very nice control idea!

spiderhead20 2020-10-07 00:11

It is a nice implementation of the theme, the puzzling part it's challenging and clever, I got stuck in level 8 :c I will keep trying.

eugenik 2020-10-07 02:58

Love the character sprites!

weine 2020-10-07 17:02

Cool puzzle game with a perfect match on the theme. Well implemented, and hard enough for me to give up on level 8. I'm impressed on how good you made the simple puzzle mechanics work. Reminds me of both sokoban and roborally.

daitli 2020-10-07 19:46

This was really fun to play! Game has a lot of potential, I made it to level 11 and I spent quite some time trying to figure it out but eventually gave up xD That beep beep sound of the cube moving is stuck in my head now, I heard it so many timeeees!

I don't see how it fits the theme but overall you created a great game!

literally-void 2020-10-07 19:53

Great puzzles!

bentglasstube 2020-10-07 19:58

I really enjoyed this puzzle concept. I think the only things lacking are some variance in the sound effects, which get very repetitive after a while. Some ambient music would also be excellent.

loig 2020-10-07 20:11

@captaindreamcast @mutuware @spiderhead20 @eugenik @weine @daitli @literally-void @bentglasstube thanks a lot for your valuable comments.

@daitli the theme gave me that idea to have the CUB stuck in a loop (in a meaning close to the meaning it has in programming)… but it also may be the case that a final twist makes it even more loopy and stucky.

a4x8e6 2020-10-07 21:02

Really nice and polished implementation of this mechanic. Seen a few others and yours seems to have the best level design, simple but challenging at the same time. Always a fan of clean pixel art and 8 bit noises too!

yeti-kid 2020-10-07 21:23

Really good idea and great puzzles to really make the player think!

barelyevengames 2020-10-07 23:27

Sorry my original review I meant to leave on another game. This was a blast! I loved the space bar dash element, added a lot of layers to the puzzles. Well done!

pizzasgood 2020-10-08 00:04

I like the way some of the levels were slight alterations to previous levels. It adds more sense of continuity than if every level was wholly unique.

haustgeirr 2020-10-08 12:48

Great, straightforward game. Got stuck on lv 8. Really interesting mechanic, and it's very satisfying to watch the moves loop over. Really good effort!

benjamin 2020-10-08 12:55

Had fun but was stuck early on level 8. I tried many times but was unable to solve it. Still enough to say the mechanic is good and I would love more features / special tiles ( maybe there are some after lvl 8 ? )

loig 2020-10-08 13:02

@benjamin indeed, there are other kinds of tiles after level 8.

@haustgeirr @benjamin @spiderhead20 I did not realise that this particular one (level 8) was so difficult. Maybe notice that the CUB does not need to reach the goal at the end of the loop (i.e. you can reach it mid-loop) and that a move can be "programmed" with no effect if you do it inside a wall. Some people also told that thinking backward may help (i.e. what should be the last move).

I am wondering if I should post a spoiler for this particular level… I am a bit reluctant about it because it may bother some people that want to find a solution by themselves. What do you think?

benjamin 2020-10-08 13:39

@loig I was very relunctant to post spoiler video for my jam games, but I had a try for this jam and I dont regret it. I'm lucky to have a lot of time to invest in games I test, but not everyone can do this. Lately, I found myself spending less and less dev time on game ending because I knew few people will play it in rating phase which is sad. On this jam I decided to make a slightly more difficult game with a real ending + a spoiler video for the people who can't solve the riddle or lack the time for die'n'retry things.

netmute 2020-10-08 13:53

Loved the puzzle mechanics! They get very difficult in the later levels

loig 2020-10-08 15:44

@benjamin I think you are right. I thus recorded a complete playthrough of the the game. Here it is: https://youtu.be/gPBUcm8twUU

glaciereclipse 2020-10-08 21:31

Very creative mechanic, was really interesting solving the levels. The difficulty ramp was really steep But I liked how you toned it down once you introduced a new mechanic, great level design! Really good entry :)

oa5f 2020-10-09 06:15

Great game! You managed to create a lot of mechanics in just two days. The levels got pretty hard after a while but remained fun to complete

zepimppotatoe 2020-10-09 10:00

Played your game for some time and really liked it. It s impressive the artstyle you managed to get going in such a short time. You really did an awesome and quite enjoyable game. Good job mate. The core mechanic of the game, not just that it fits the theme perfectly, it s so fun and so satisfying to finish every level. The jump ability also is quite a nice addition that i have not seen in any other game that is like yours, so it kinda makes it pretty special. Seeing as there are already 20 levels in the game, i can just upload it anywhere and call it a full game. Pretty sure that if you put a 2-3$ price tag, people would pay it like it is now. Cheers and have fun making games like this, you really are doing something great. Hope to see your games on a market in the future.

raphael-dias 2020-10-09 22:49

I think this is the best ideia for the loop theme i've seen so far.

matootsy 2020-10-16 19:56

very clever game completely in the theme. And I like the minimalist clean esthetic. The dash is a very good idea. The progression curve is well done. No Bugs. A very addictive puzzle game. I enjoyed to play it. Good job.
