Overall good job! I'm sure if you had more time you would have been able to polish a few things. If you decide to keep working on it, I had a few issues with the jump. If I tried to jump right after landing, I would stutter a little bit. overall though, great game and good levels!

crazybot 2020-04-20 19:38

Honestly if you're really 11 this is awesome(that's about the age at which I started). I love the art (altough that's maybe not you since I can't rate graphics?) and the idea of a classic 2d platformer but you can't stop moving is very interesting! I do have some tips however,

1 - a story is awesome but you don't NEED it, for me it's pretty obvious you didn't make the game with the story in mind since I can't find any robots (altough I did only get to lvl 2/3)

2 - just put the text through a spellingchecker, it's pretty hard to change the text after it's uploaded :)

3 - it's too hard, we the developers play it a thousand times while programming but the player hasn't. keep that in mind.

Overall a very fun small game!

son-dro 2020-04-21 09:40

first of all good job finishing the game for the submission, quite impressive for your age! I would focus on the movement polishing first, before building any new content like levels. Some ideas from my side: - direction change: I like the idea of never being able to stop and always being forced to move. You could add more weight on that and bring your movement more alive and make it less steady by minor animations or tweaks in the transitions in between the different movement states. For example you could have the player accelerate first after he is turning (you could even approach it with a more creative style like some old cartoons did where the character kind of "brakes" on the ground before he is turning to give your movement more character. you could check out the turning mechanic from animal crossing for inspiration: https://twitter.com/rtm223/status/1242031542823575553) - movement polishing: there a few things that could get polished further (eg. walking uphill or collision detection in movement). I remember when I was working on a 2D platformer few years ago there was video series from Sebastian Lague for this exact topic, maybe it helps you to improve your movement mechanics further: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLFt_AvWsXl0f0hqURlhyIoAabKPgRsqjz

keep it up! :)

peterfiftyfour 2020-04-21 10:11

I like the big text in the level for tutorial stuff! The game is pretty hard so maybe some checkpoints could help to get ppl through the levels without giving up! Nice job keep on making stuff!!

g-a-gamestudio 2020-04-21 14:58

Thank you so much!

g-a-gamestudio 2020-04-21 14:59

This is my first jam so I will make sure to use your information to improve.

tripl3m 2020-04-21 20:17

Hello there, congratz on your first jam. Really impressive to release a full game at your age !!! I hope to see more from you in the future, keep the good work !!!

I would had one more advice, I believe in level 2 (the first one with enemys), there is a part where there is a fall. It could be frustrating for the player to not see where he will land, I would always give cues to the player about what is coming next.

timetravelhamster 2020-04-22 06:28

GREAT JOB little dude. Keep the head up and look forward.

sparsha-dhar 2020-04-22 07:27

Nice game, find the retro feel amusing.. Controls are great, its hard though

mantarus 2020-04-22 15:35

Cool idea and nice game! Controls a bit not responsive though. I found that sometimes you can see some space between tiles, this may happen if antialiasing is enabled.

g-a-gamestudio 2020-04-23 02:07

@mantarus, I saw that, but I didn't know how to fix. Thank you for the help.

valisse21 2020-04-23 11:45

Wow, amazing job for your age! I hope you will continue doing games and I wish you to succeed in that. Good luck!

bigwhiteshogun 2020-04-23 12:14

Wooow dude! I'm more than twice your age, and I wouldn't be able to achieve what you did here. Very impressive, please do not stop and continue making games. Great thinks awaits you I'm sure if you do!

g-a-gamestudio 2020-04-23 14:21

Thank you so much @bigwhiteshogun and @valisse21.

garys 2020-04-23 16:25

Wow, you're 11? This is impressive work... I think it's a nice idea for a mechanic. It needs a fair bit of polish, but really at your age and with the time you had to make it, I'm taking all kinds of hats off to you sir.

finn-tr 2020-04-23 16:39

Really neat game! Very well-executed on an interesting idea. Love the simple pixel art, music and sound are very fitting! Just a bit of polishing needed but very very impressive. Great job!

g-a-gamestudio 2020-04-23 18:04

Thanks so much!

joamd 2020-04-24 09:17

Finished both jam and easy versions! Nice mechanic with not being able to stop xD Overall good game

primum-ludum 2020-04-25 07:07

ITs AWESOME if you are really 11 y.o. I had problebs with the jump, but anyway it was fun)

g-a-gamestudio 2020-04-25 07:19

Yeah I know that the jump is a little problematic @primum-ludum, but I don't know how to fix it. I can try figdeting with the code to get the jump right. Thanks for the feedback though @primum-ludum.

aristo 2020-04-25 07:23

Good work with the tutorials and stuff. Jump didnt feel that responsive at times. (Maybe bcoz of the groundcheck or could be playing in the browser). Assuming this is your first game, this is great stuff !. Good job ! Keep Going !

g-a-gamestudio 2020-04-25 07:34

@aristo thank you for the feedback and this is actually the third full game I made. I always get new game ideas so I start making them, but never finish them. This helps me though because then I learn more and more. I want to be a computer programmer when I grow up so I learned HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. I always wanted to make games so I learned C# for Unity and started making games. With me if something does not look good then I have to make good or else. This is my first Jam and Ludum Dare though.

tricky-fat-cat 2020-04-25 08:49

It's a nice small game for your age, but be careful in the future. Test your game more and add more juice and indications for different actions, e.g. screenshake for on taking damage. Invinsibility frames after taking damage. Etc.

vesper 2020-04-25 11:03

Really impressive, though the jump was a little sticky which made things challenging at times. I appreciated how well you integrated the "tutorial" aspect at the beginning there. It's something that a surprising number of people forget to do. Overall a fun little platformer. Congrats on completing your first Jam!

codey 2020-04-25 17:27

Wow it's kind of a hardcode platformer. I like the pixel art! I like how every level introduced a new kind of obstacle or danger. There could be more feedback when the player is being hit. Also I sometimes couldn't jump right after I landed. That did cost me a lot of deaths! I liked that there was a short tutorial, it is important that a game is self explanatory (I wish I had the time to make one for my game!).

g-a-gamestudio 2020-04-25 17:41

Thank you @artyom-volkov @vesper and @codey for the feedback.

duke 2020-04-25 17:51

The game didn't really click for me. There were a lot of issues with the physics and platforming engine. Jumping often did not trigger, the sound effect for it did though. With no feedback when getting hurt, it game just kinda off. I also didn't really like the auto running mechanic. Made the laggy platforming even more tedious. After getting to level 3 and having to jump over enemies that give you damge on contact and I had to jump down a platform without being able to see what was down there and directly jumping into an enemy, I quit.

The used tilemap is a good pick, but the musical choices were very off putting (zelda / mario remixes etc are not the best picks in my opinion)

But since the core game play mechanics already are not a satisfying experience, every other criticism is kinda pointless. That's the most important part of your game and everything revolves around it. So you should make sure, that that part of the game works and is fun!

Good luck for your next projects, I hope you can use some of the feedback :)

g-a-gamestudio 2020-04-25 17:55

I am sorry for experience @duke and I can explain.

g-a-gamestudio 2020-04-25 18:04

@duke see I know that the jumping doesn't trigger on land sometimes and I am fixing that today. Also I am sorry you did no like the auto run mechanic, but that's just part of the game. There is a easy version of the game too which is like a fix too. I will make the enemies shorter in the easy version for you and in the easy version there is a sign that says enemies below, but I just checked and it's not working so I will fix that. I only had 20 minutes for the music sadly so I went on youtube and downloaded some of my favorite chill songs which were Zelda and Mario remixes. You have been super helpful in helping fix the game. If you are wondering why I am not changing the original version is because I want people to see what it was when I submitted it, not what I had made after I fixed it.

penguinbob 2020-04-25 18:54

It is really annoying that you can not jump with the space bar. The difficulty curve is really bad(Level 1 is extremely easy, but level 2 seems almost impossible.). Better luck next time! Keep making games to improve!

whatnamegames 2020-04-25 19:52

Nice fun game

croped 2020-04-25 19:55

First of all congrats on your submission...I really like the idea and the tutorial was well made and fun. The movement/controls need some work to prevent your players from screaming out of frustation (like me) but other than that really solid game! Keep it up ;-)

adonisdevs 2020-04-25 19:58

I liked the idea, but I thought the execution of it wasn't great. It didn't really feel good to play as a platformer, mostly because of the jumping. I did like the tutorial though and level select, because it made it feel like a pretty polished game :)

g-a-gamestudio 2020-04-25 19:58

@guille Ok well there is a glitch if I put that you can use both w and space so is ok if I take out w and put it so you use space to jump?

martinitron 2020-04-25 20:08

Nice work! A little more animation on the characters might have been nice, especially when dying in a pit of spikes (but I can appreciate that might have been a time pressure thing). Jumping immediately after landing didn't work that well and at one point I was stopped by the landscape (the bottom of the slope in level 2?) when I expected to be able to naturally run up it rather than having to jump up onto it. Again, good job and good luck.

g-a-gamestudio 2020-04-25 20:50

Sorry for the slope thing @martinitron. Hopefully tonight the new and improved version will be released.

tadej 2020-04-25 21:43

As mentioned before, jumping is a bit unresponsive. Also sometimes I would instantly lose 2 hearts when hitting an enemy. Maybe you could make the character invulnerable for a fraction of a second after getting hit once.

Other than that it's a really fun game. I like the mechanic of not being able to stop and the way it's introduced in the tutorial.

frosty 2020-04-26 03:22

Fun little game overall, even if the controls were pretty frustrating at times. I really want to know what's in the box now! :)

g-a-gamestudio 2020-04-26 03:25

You may find out in a year or two.

g-a-gamestudio 2020-04-26 03:26

Ok you know what I cant wait any longer.

nolanfa 2020-04-26 03:39

The game works and I didn't encounter any bugs, but you should fix the difficulty balance: the first two levels are very easy (which is fine for a tutorial), but then the third one (named level 2 I think; the one with the enemies) is suddenly very very hard. The hill makes you jump when you arrive on top and three times out of two I would then be unable to jump over the first pitfall because I landed too late, resulting in my death at the hands of the second enemy.

Congrats on finishing the game and having it this bug-free, though, keep going!

g-a-gamestudio 2020-04-26 03:43

@schwarcraft @crazybot @son-dro @peterfiftyfour @tripl3m @timetravelhamster @sparsha-dhar @mantarus @valisse21 @bigwhiteshogun @garys @finn-tr @joamd @primum-ludum @aristo @artyom-volkov @vesper @cody @duke @guille @whatnamegames @croped @adonisdevs @martinitron @tadej @frosty

Inside the box is a plant, but not any ordinary plant. It's the plant of life and nature or as most humans called it "Mother Nature." Robots wanted to make the world mechanic, all robotic, but the only thing stopping them is the plant of life and nature. To hide, the plant of life and nature turned into a sprout which is in the box. Your job is to take it where no one will find it, a space station in space which orbits Earth. The plant will be transported by a space shuttle to the space station. And there you have it. Thats what is in the box.

g-a-gamestudio 2020-04-26 03:47

@nolanfa Did you try the updated version called easy version? As it says it is much easier.

fabrizio-spadaro 2020-04-26 10:14

Nice assets selection(art, audio), funny game to play but I would change the controls mechanics a bit, with a standard press to move mechanic. Great entry and good level design!

Ps: did you use the unity tilemap editor? Because I saw some glitches in the tiles alignment of the tiles.

emkani 2020-04-26 10:17

Great first attempt, difficulty is a bit high in the original version.

ryjcio 2020-04-26 10:18

Really nice game! The latest version is super fun, but the boss battle might be slightly too easy. I've found the 2nd lvl harder then the boss one.

meo-benderson 2020-04-26 10:24

Nice first entry, especially for someone your age. I liked the art. The game was a bit hard, mostly because of the jumping being a bit unresponsive right after you've landed. But I like hard games ;)

nolanfa 2020-04-26 11:17

Indeed, I hadn't read the full name of the versions since they were so long and seemed really similar, and just read the version number (if instead of BlahBlahBlahEasy1version3 you rename it BlahBlahBlah1version3easy it will be more obvious that there is an easy version).

I still had the same problem with the easy version though, which is the hill just after the first enemy where when you arrive at the top physics make you automatically jump a bit, which means your feet are not on the ground when you want to jump. For an (even) easier version I would make the top part of the hill longer and the platforms with the enemies after that longer too. Or maybe more lives.

g-a-gamestudio 2020-04-26 14:40

@fabrizio-spadaro I did use the unity tilemap editor. Do you know how I could fix it?

marcusnystrand 2020-04-26 16:22

Yaay, I made it to the end. But second level was SUPER hard hehe :)

Nice music but a bit too loud sound effects I think.

Overall well done!

trifectuh 2020-04-27 01:29

This is great fun! I'm gonna have to come back later to finish it as its quite challenging. I think tightening up the hurt/hitboxes for the player and enemies, as well as keeping the player grounded when going over a slope, would help even out the difficulty without having to change the levels at all. Awesome job.

g-a-gamestudio 2020-04-27 02:20

@trifectuh Thank you so much for liking my game.

julian-hartinger 2020-04-28 14:04

lot of potencial here in my opinion. i liked the graphics of the background. Potencial for speedrunning- but the second level is tooo hard XD

johnnysix 2020-04-28 22:59

Cool concept - for a first game it's decent, and the no moving is pretty original.

If you do carry on to make more levels, do some more of your own art. It looks like you made a start with the main guy, and more than ever ( I started around the same age ) there are tons of free tools ( ASEPRITE - https://www.aseprite.org/ GIMP - https://www.gimp.org/ ) that you can make yout art with.

One thing that'd be more challenging , would be if he didn't stop on walls, but just went backwards, that's what I was expecting to happen on the tutorial.

g-a-gamestudio 2020-04-29 02:33

@johnnysix Thank you so much for the tools. I didn't have to make a tilemap. I made all sprites myself with pixelart.com and pixlr.com.

magnanix 2020-04-29 03:57

[Jam Entry] I enjoyed the idea of the movement, some cool puzzles and situations could come from it. Unfortunately I got stuck on the 3rd stage. The running up the ramp was odd - then the jump would fail to fire when pressed a lot of the time.

Not sure if others have mentioned it, but a really awesome thing you can add to make it more snappy and feel like control is in the hands of the player is: - Add a "timer" to the jump key, say 0.2s - if this timer is > 0s and the player == grounded, then jump. - (This will allow players to press the jump key just above the ground, and the jump will instantly fire - removing that feeling of "I pressed jump and nothing happened!")

- Add a "timer" to the "grounded" state, say: - if(grounded) isGroundedTimer = 0.2s; - if(!grounded) isGroundedTimer -= Time.deltaTime (reduce the timer by frame amount); - then if Jump Timer > 0 (button has been pressed), and isGroundedTimer > 0, jump (set both timers to 0/-1 so that the player can't infinitely fly XD)! :P. - (This will allow players to jump just after leaving a surface/edge, a tiny window where the player can still press the jump key and launch - as human reaction speed is not perfect - and if they miss by 0.1s @ an edge, the character falls and dies.

Outside of that, just some more effects for getting hit and responses would be nice :) (you might have already added those in future versions, but I'm rating from the Jam Entry :P.

Nice work!

yubs 2020-04-29 06:06

Really nice game! Was fun and had a lot of character. Nicely made tutorial was one of the best things, as those are hard to come by sometimes in jam games. My only complaint would be that the jump sound was a bit sharp, but that is very minor. Great entry!

gameovermexico 2020-04-29 18:08

it nice but if u can fix the controls, it could be a better experience.

guntainment 2020-04-30 18:58

The heats don't decrease and the player keeps moving once you hit the key to walk don't know if you wanted to do that. but I liked the music and when you jump sometimes you could see the space between the tiles I thinks thats an issue with the tilemap system. If you could fix that it would be a very good game.

g-a-gamestudio 2020-05-01 01:36

@guntainment Sorry to be rude, but in the tutorial, it literally says that you can't stop moving. IT IS LITERALLY THE MAIN MECHANIC.

ludumdaredevil 2020-05-10 19:50

Very cool game! Unfortunately the movement was a bit clunky. The jump height wasn't consistent and the jump didn't always register. I found a few bugs in the game. The first one was that the player could get stuck in the ground allowing him to stop. Also when I used a controller you could hold down the Y button and jump really high. Other than that it was a really fun game.

g-a-gamestudio 2020-05-12 21:32

@ludumdaredevil can you tell me more about the player getting stuck in the ground?? How did it happen?? Also I just wanna let you know that this game is not for controller.

ludumdaredevil 2020-05-13 00:19

I'm not sure but at one of the ramps I got stuck at the base of it. Maybe the colliders formed some kind of an edge and the player got stuck on it. That's my best guess.
