I didn't know you could make games like this on iPad :open_mouth:

youpeoples 2019-04-29 18:45

I really wanted to give this game a go. It looks interesting. But I get an error on startup. "The procedure entry point GetSystemTimePreciesAsFileTime could not be located in the dynamic link library KERNEL32.dll"

phantomeniasll 2019-04-29 18:52

I bought a bow and dont knew how to use it a littel tutorial would be nice

sebastien-bourgeois 2019-04-29 18:57

@shard sure you can ;) It is coded in Python with an app (that I wrote) called Pyxen.

@youpeoples not sure about this problem, what Windows version do you have ? I tested only on Windows 10.

@phantomeniasll to use the bow, just hit the fire button like the sword (J key to fire, K to open chest).

anderssonkev 2019-04-29 18:57

Really impressed that this was created on an iPad Pro! Great colors as well in your game, well done!

harksa 2019-04-29 19:03

I have to admit I'm quite impressed you can actually create a game on an Ipad Pro. Sadly, it doesn't mean it can make an interesting game. The idea is good but I got killed on level 4 and I didn't wanted to try harder than that because of the speed of the game.

youpeoples 2019-04-29 19:08

@sebastien-bourgeois windows 7

sebastien-bourgeois 2019-04-29 19:17

@anderssonkev thanks a lot :)

@harksa Did you think the gameplay was too slow paced ? I think there is too much random in the game, sometimes it's too easy and you can beat the final boss quickly, and other times i'm beaten at level 3.

And of course, the app I used to write the game (Pyxen) will never compete with Unity, Unreal or even GameMaker, but it was really cool to make a complete game from scratch without leaving the iPad! (Even the music was done on an iPad).

@youpeoples thanks, I'll try to find a Windows 7 to test the game, I should have set some minimal requirements.

youpeoples 2019-04-29 19:18

@ me again if you come across a fix or something. I really would like to try this game.

silvervalegames 2019-04-29 20:49

I like the game mechanic. It would have been nice if there was some indication that when I was attacking any enemy I was actually doing something to them. Also on level 2 sometimes the stairs wouldn't spawn? Which left me in a room trapped with 100+ enemies, which felt like an extreme jump from the two enemies in level 1.

sebastien-bourgeois 2019-04-29 21:00

@youpeoples I've uploaded a new version compatible with Windows 7, you can download it again from itch if you still want to test the game :)

@silvervalegames hey thanks for feedback :) I've tested the game many many times and I've never been in a situation where the stairs don't spawn. That's weird I'll have a look thanks for report! Sure I wanted to add some highlight when we hit the monsters, but you know, time is running out due to the jam effect and I didn't have the time to polish this ;)

youpeoples 2019-04-29 21:14

Hey! Thanks for fixing it for windows 7!

123212.png

Short but nice. Very easy and a little slow but for sure great groundwork. Some visual indicators for damage being done would be nice. Great mood/atmosphere. I love the bgm.

sebastien-bourgeois 2019-04-29 21:31

@youpeoples Thank you so much for your feedback :)

If only I had more time, I wanted to add new monsters, new powerups, more levels, ...

I totally agree, the game can be very easy sometimes, and the hero could walk faster, i'll take notes!

aqws3 2019-04-29 21:58

I like the concept of the game a lot, It just needs more refining in the level generation and enemies to become more fun. Movement seems too slow, specially for the big rooms and how fast enemies spawn, it also needs more visual and sound feedback for collisions and so. Cute graphics, I like them!

sebastien-bourgeois 2019-04-29 22:22

@aqws3 thank you so much for feedback! Glad you enjoyed the game and graphics, if only I had more time i could have polished the game a bit more. I have tons of ideas left on a ever-growing todo list!

fatcrow 2019-04-30 02:12

The music kind of reminded me of music made for the Wii. The game was very polished but maybe having a how to play screen inside the game might make it a little less confusing. I loved the sprite work and the color scheme it really helped create a cohesive mood and atmosphere. Nice work! I was also very impressed that you made the game on an iPad! Awesome!

daspanjo 2019-04-30 03:10

Great game! I like the idea that your life is also the timer. This way you have one more reason to not buy something. The only negative thing I noticed is that the movement maybe felt a little bit slow. But all in all a great game!

sebastien-bourgeois 2019-04-30 08:06

@fatcrow thanks you for your kind words :) Sure a screen with instructions could have been a great thing, I should have done that. Really glad you enjoyed the mood, the music and the sprites, thank you!

@daspanjo Thank you for for your feedback! I'm so happy you enjoyed playing it ;) I'll probably try to work again on the game post-LD and make it a little faster, many comments report the game is too slow I guess I was too tired to notice that ;) Concerning the timer, I liked the idea that if Life is Money, and Money is Time, then Life has to be Time too!

Thank you all for your comments, that means a lot to me.

corny 2019-04-30 13:24

I personally found the game to be kinda slow. The camera panning only when you got to the very border of the screen was also a bit annoying, but it didn't stop me from enjoying the gameplay. The graphics were pretty, if a bit simplistic, but coupled with the music and overall mood they fit pretty well together! I'm still kinda impressed that this kinda stuff is possible to make just on a regular ol' iPad!

taddl 2019-04-30 16:04

I like the music and the art.

I would find it better if the camera would always center on the player and there was some kind of hit feedback when the player is getting hit or the player hits an enemy. I wasnt always sure whether I actually hit something when attacking.

kaisean-games 2019-04-30 18:31

For a compo game, very well done. Seems rather polished.

The only thing I've found too limiting is limitless spawning... And I don't understand how enemies take my gold when they shoot me.

But I can work with that.

All in all, very nice entry.

sebastien-bourgeois 2019-04-30 19:42

@corny the camera panning was near the top of my todo list to be honest. (along with visual feedback for damages, animating sprites). Thanks for your feedback, so glad you enjoyed the overall mood of the game!

@taddl happy to hear that you liked the art of the game, being mostly a coder, that means a lot to me! I will probably try to make future updates post-LD, your feedback is already near the top of my todo list ;)

@kaisean-games Thank you :) Yes, i should have controlled spawning a little bit better, i sometimes get stuck with a legion of enemies and die... I will add visual and audio feedback when monsters hit you, that is not obvious I completely agree with you. Thanks for playing!

johanhelsing 2019-05-01 08:27

It still crashes for me on Windows 10.

Skjermbilde (21).png

sebastien-bourgeois 2019-05-01 09:04

@johanhelsing oh man sorry for that, seems to be a problem with OpenGL. Do you have info about your GPU ? Do you have the latest drivers ? I'll try to investigate the problem. Thanks a lot for letting me know about that.

johanhelsing 2019-05-01 09:08

@sebastien-bourgeois Some Intel integrated on my laptop. I think it's Iris 540.

64mega 2019-05-01 18:06

Made it to the end, and I love this concept of bundling several stats into one consumable pool! Would like to see where this goes.

sebastien-bourgeois 2019-05-01 18:50

@64mega thank you, i would really like to continue working on this game, there are lots of ideas left on my list! Congratulations for reaching the end, and thanks for playing.

bentebent 2019-05-01 20:19

I really liked the visual style and the slow pace fit the gameplay nicely. Only thing missing was better feedback for landing hits on the enemies. Well done!

sebastien-bourgeois 2019-05-02 20:07

@bentebent thanks for your feedback! Sure I should have done some better visual/audio feedback for hits, but time was quickly running out. I take notes :)

pixscope 2019-05-02 20:24

This is a lot of fun !

jonas-tyroller 2019-05-02 20:38

Looks pretty awesome due to the nice color scheme you picked. Also a good execution for the topic of this jam. I wonder why you decided to go fur such a low movement speed for the character. Especially when you're running out of time and still haven't found the exit it feels a little too slow. It would be great to have an incentive to destroy enemies. Seems reasonable to just ignore them at the moment. Overall big props for what you managed to create in just one weekend. Well done.

yaen 2019-05-02 20:39

Loved your graphics, you went for a very pleasing colour scheme here. Nice!

The theme is also strong in this one and that becomes clear very soon after starting the game.

I wish the movement speed was at least twice as fast, everything felt so sluggish, especially with the large level size and the constantly ticking timer of my life. I died to one of those mimics without knowing that they even existed in the first place. That felt so bad and I felt so cheated by the game that I stopped playing lol.

sebastien-bourgeois 2019-05-02 21:05

@pixscope thanks ;)

@jonas-tyroller hey thanks for your feedback! In fact I was supposed to add movement speed powerups, but my time was running out for this jam, just like in the game! I noticed too after some tests that I sometimes end up not killing monsters and just avoid them, there's a flaw there, I will improved that. Anyway, thank you for taking the time to play.

@yaen sincere thanks for your nice words :) I think I was too tired to figure out that movement speed was so slow, seemed to be ok at that time lol.

zubspace 2019-05-02 23:20

Good entry and very interesting concept for a roguelike. I like how fast it feels. The movement, spawn rate of the enemies and bullet speed are perfect. I think the death-chests are a bit too unfair. Would also be more fun, if enemies would drop loot. I think this would be a really, really great game with a larger variety of weapons, like bombs or fireballs.

Still a good job you did in that short amount of time!

muzigpuzig 2019-05-03 08:52

I really like your design choice, feels nostalgic and authentic. Since you wrote about some other tools you used, may I ask what program you used for making the sprites?

sebastien-bourgeois 2019-05-03 09:08

@zubspace hey thank you for your feedback! I could probably decrease the damages received by death chests, I found the idea cool at the moment, but that's unfair for sure (I already died at last level because of this and it was frustrating!). Monsters should drop loot, you're right, I have to work on that because I simply ignore them most of the time. Thanks, I will continue working on the game!

sebastien-bourgeois 2019-05-03 09:14

Hey thanks @muzigpuzig for your feedback :) Sure I wrote all the tools I used for this compo, that's the best way to improve my tools I think, I use them in situation. Sprites were made in the same app as Code: [Pyxen](https://pyxen.com), the app was designed for that purpose even if it's still rough at that time.

The sprite editor looks like that :

copper-aardvark-games 2019-05-04 20:02

The art style is very polished and the gameplay is simple yet addictive. Nice one!

cogcomp 2019-05-04 20:09

Nice little roguelike! Quite addictive. I'm going to play this some more :-)

untitled-studios 2019-05-04 20:13

This game is great! I really love the art and music. Unfortunately, the gameplay is a bit slow. I wish everything in the game was about 2x faster.

seb-jones 2019-05-04 20:20

Decent graphic style. Nice audio. The gameplay is a bit basic and the random generator is pretty bad: one time the key and the exit were on the exact same screen as where I started. Also, it is quite easy to just ignore the enemies completely and get through the levels.

purrfexionator 2019-05-04 20:22

Great game! It was a total blast to play, and I couldn't bring myself to stop until i defeated the final boss. However, I felt that the spawners were a little too rapid and it wasn't immediately clear that you could destroy them. It felt great to slash through hordes of enemies, although I felt it would have felt even better if you had some kind of feedback when you hit things, like a sound effect or something. The fact that your life wasn't only your currency but also a timer was super innovative and made for some tense and interesting gameplay where I had to quickly strategise the best way to preserve it. I didn't love the camera, as it didn't start moving until you were at the edge of the screen, making it tricky to tell what is ahead of you. I loved the graphics as well, especially the funny little playable character, although i did wish he had some kind of basic walk cycle. I loved the music as well. Overall, well done! A solid 4.5-star rating from me!

raziyya 2019-05-05 10:48

Cool game! Really enjoyed the music.

Would have loved for there to be more feedback on enemy hits.

Can't believe this was all done on an iPad though!
