Worked like a charm, and great music! With some knockback on the zombies, shooting and hitting them would have been even more rewarding. Also some kind of boss or endgame would have been nice - I did not know what to do with all of the 'BP' after getting the shotgun. And also - nice dialogue system!

norris-eldridge 2019-04-29 19:24

hey thanks so much! yeah I may keep working on this project after the rating done and add those things in. Given more time the next things in the pipeline were more maps, more zombie variety, boss fights, and interactive scene objects like explosive barrels, etc. And yeah good callout on the BP after the shotgun. I think adding in more stages with tougher enemies will make you have to spend your BP on ammo.

twobythree 2019-04-29 19:58

Got stucked at the first meeting with the seller so re run the game and works nice, I like the metallica based music, fits perfectlly for the game. The blood economy is clever, Congratularions!

kaeveris 2019-04-29 20:04

Very cool idea! I like the graphics a lot and the music are just amazing!

seriar 2019-04-29 20:16

Nice game. Sound fit so well. Some end game mechanics would be nice (or did i miss it?)

norris-eldridge 2019-04-29 20:20

Hey @seriar thanks for playing and commenting! Nope, not missing anything. I was planning to add more maps, more enemies, and have it randomize so it could be the kind of game you could just keep playing. But 2 days wasn't enough time to get all that in this time unfortunately :P But I am considering continuing to work on this project and add all that stuff in.

omnipotentindie 2019-04-30 01:27

Nice job, like that there was context behind what you were doing. Nice mood, gameplay was a bit slow and repetitive

fm-studio 2019-04-30 17:43

Nice graphics and very fitting audio. Would like to see this game expanded with different mechanics as it gets repetitive after while. Anyway fun to play. Good job.

mrnyarlathotep 2019-04-30 23:20

Yeah, the buttrock theme was great, gave Doom vibes.

zubspace 2019-04-30 23:29

The katana is a bit overpowered. But the shotgun sounds so much better. Looks good. Would love to play it again with more zombie types and different levels.

nick-rafalski 2019-04-30 23:33

The music is great! I also appreciate the polish put into the UI. The little notifications in the upper right when you buy something are nice. Agree with others that the game is a little incomplete, but it was fun for what it was. Nice job!

norris-eldridge 2019-04-30 23:33

thanks @zubspace yeah the katana is probably a bit too good but I liked it a lot so that's probably why :P yeah I'm actually considering continuing development on this game and adding in more levels, boss fights, etc

phobos001 2019-05-01 02:14

Cute little game! Some more feedback when you got attacked and when you attack others would be better. Some beefy sounds and camera shake is a great way to spice it up pretty quick. I was confused when there was only two different areas you could go in. I thought if I could get all the upgrades then I would be able to go behind what looked like a door behind the salesman. Great work my friend!

minibobbo 2019-05-01 02:50

I agree with some of the other comments that some feedback on the hits would have been nice. Maybe knockback on the zombies when you hit them? I didn't notice if there was ever any changes in the levels as I progressed. I don't think there was ever a reason for me to go past the katana since the pistol shots get expensive and the sword is free :)

Nice music choice. The mood was nice too. I would have liked if the character and zombie sprites had a facing up animation so there was a slight difference between walking up and down.

Nice entry.

cheesepencil 2019-05-01 17:05

I got my brains eaten in the first wave but i liked it

pixscope 2019-05-01 21:20

I love it !

norris-eldridge 2019-05-01 21:22

@pixscope awesome! That's great to hear! Thanks for playing :)

jellzilla 2019-05-01 21:26

Music was great, I liked the shopkeeper's character, and the weapons were fun to play with! As others said, better feedback for hits would be a great quality of life improvement.

veryeviltomato 2019-05-02 02:26

Worked pretty good! I love good old zombie shooting games, got to say that the music didn't feel in sync with the game's visual style, the zombies don't have much reaction to getting damaged, it's also a bit too easy! Good entry nonetheless, it's a fully working game, wish there were more guns!

hutchings90 2019-05-02 04:20

Solid interpretation of the theme, solid mechanics, solid music, solid game. Did you play the instruments for the music?

I noticed one problem. I think I spent all my blood at the store and died from it. After that, I could start the game, but I couldn't move my character.

norris-eldridge 2019-05-02 04:31

@hutchings90 hey thanks for playing and yes I also made the music also thanks for calling that out, I wonder if perhaps a refresh of the browser would fix that issue. There is supposed to be logic there to make sure you don't spend more BP than you have but there's probably a bug in there :P I'll have to go take a look

baby-dino-herd 2019-05-03 03:26

Really solid work from start to finish! I agree with other comments about hit feedback and enemy progression -- I enjoyed what was here and would have liked to have seen more!

The standouts were the music, which nicely set the stage for the action sequences, as well the overall UI and game structure. I really liked the attention to detail in the menus and scene transitions, it helps it feel like a full game instead of a prototype.

rsim 2019-05-03 05:08

I'll just add to the long list of people congratulating you on the audio - great work, far better than I expect from a compo entry! The gameplay was a bit of a let down given how strong the audio was - it'd have been nice to have more of a real level, different enemy types, etc - but it was still enjoyable.

dazzleisace 2019-05-03 13:48

Hehehe.... DEAD

Good fun and awesome audio.

ogma 2019-05-03 15:39

I beat the game! o/ Fun game, it reminded me the days of Newgrounds. :) The graphics are nice and the music is really cool.

As for the gameplay, it's correct, katana is always my go to weapon when it's available in those kind of games^^. As others said a bit more feedback would be great, knowing when you're hitting something or how much life you still have (don't know if you can actually die^^"). As a way to spice up things, you could spawn more zombies as you go back to the death ring. It would make you feel a bit more inclined to use firearms, or make you feel like a zombie slasher from hell if you keep it to the katana haha.

I didn't encounter any bug except for the first encounter where I had to reload the game because I was stuck to the shop.

Goog job! o/

angiemon 2019-05-03 22:17

Decent entry! like others mentioned, more feedback would be nice like a knockback, projectiles while shooting, indicated range, bull's eye.. etc :) graphics were cute, I thought the shopkeeper looked great hehe. music was very fitting :) Would have liked a better walking animation, but alas, this is a gamejam right ;) Pistol is too ineffective compared to the bullet price imo. Maybe tweak it a bit more + added zombies/levels. Maybe you can make sort of procedural levels where you have to obtain a quest objective and have to rade through a sea of zombies bc of it.. :D and on the way you farm body parts for better equipment. Would definitley play that :D

norris-eldridge 2019-05-03 22:23

@angiemon thanks for playing and your feedback! yeah definitely think more to actually do and better hit feedback are the top of my to do list for next time. It's interesting to me that you found the pistol ineffective, for me it's a trade off between that and the shotgun. The pistol while taking two bullets to kill a zombie can actually be great because the bullets travel further and if you line it up, you might be able to get 3+ zombies with just 2 bullets :P Though I suppose this is all the more reason to have better feedback :P

angiemon 2019-05-03 22:34

Really? Naaah the pistol sucked, sorry :P I though the shotgut was super effective and actually made an own achievement of it to hit as much zombies as possible with one shot! (record 4 I think - suuuper satisfying! :D) that's not meant to be bad though - a lot of games offer weapon/gear choices and some of them just suck haha (or are "personal choices" yadda yadda) the way I see it, that just adds realism to your game: shotgun>pistol

(defo with zombies! :D)

vinay-rao 2019-05-03 23:13

This game is fun, but I think the game balance is a bit off. After playing it for a little bit, I started to notice the element of danger quickly vanished. I think I've figured out why that may be the case.

The katana is overwhelmingly powerful for its cost, I never felt like I had to switch from this weapon. After entering the battle screen, it's possible to win without doing anything but left clicking, without regard to character facing with the katana. The BP loss from taking a hit is a too low after the first battle. Without attempting to dodge at all, you are assuredly going to come out with more BP than you entered with using this strategy. The zombies are rarely alive (or rather... undead) long enough to do any significant damage after the first battle using only the club. After the first outing, coming back to the fight screen with the katana is a bit game breaking.

The pistol, though more cost effective than the shotgun, is far more destructive since enemies tend to approach in lines. Though if you accept hits from the zombies to let them bunch up, the shotgun starts to outperform the pistol. Different weapons for different situations, I suppose. But because the zombies only come from one or the other side, the shotgun sees limited applications.

I think with a difficulty hike and maybe a few less predictable vectors for the zombies to attack from, this game would be pretty awesome.

The art is good. The music is excellent. I definitely got the Doom vibe from the music. Props for making perfect zombie killing music!

Pretty good overall, I'd say. Probably just needs a couple of tweaks to up the panic factor.

norris-eldridge 2019-05-03 23:21

@vinay-rao hey thanks for playing and your feedback! Yeah I definitely agree with your assessment. I had hoped to make various types of zombies and multiple stages to fight them in. The end goal would have been to have different weapons being advantageous in different environment / against different enemy types but sadly just ran out of time trying to cram in the shop, death, main menu lol :P

garys 2019-05-04 00:03

I found it quite satisfying to circle round the zombies for a bit until they're in a bit of a clump, then see how many I could take out with each shotgun blast. Needs a bit more... enemies, waves, levels, etc. But pretty fun to play. Nice work.

vinay-rao 2019-05-04 04:40

@norris-eldridge

I hear ya. 48 hours is exactly enough time to get overly ambitious! Hope you continue with this one. I think it has a lot of potential.

datagreed 2019-05-05 15:09

Stuck on the first shop trying to buy someting and not being able to do anything - 10 BP is not enough money to buy anything and getting out of the shop is not possible (I can lose the shop dialogue but unable to go anywhere)

datagreed 2019-05-05 15:10

Okay, reloading the game couple of times got me 15 BP and a bat, not sure why it didn't work the first time (skipped dialogue too fast)?

al-bueche 2019-05-05 15:55

I loved the music and gameplay felt smooth.

I tend away from consumables in most games and this one was no different. I much preferred the katana to either of the guns.

I would love to see content expanded a bit, particularly a way to 'win'.

edevjogos 2019-05-05 16:16

Fun game, but misses level progression, it would feel better if each time you leave the shop there was more zombies and some different tougher ones.

norris-eldridge 2019-05-05 16:28

@datagreed hey thanks for playing and sorry about the confusion, you can walk off the screen in any direction and get to a screen of zombies. From there fight zombies to get BP, then go back to the shop to spend your BP

norris-eldridge 2019-05-05 16:30

@edevjogos definitely! Yeah more levels and more enemies were both in the next to do, sadly just ran out of time. But thanks for playing and your feedback :)

davidsheadgames 2019-05-06 03:37

"DEAD"

Definitely a fun idea. I liked the music and the usage of drums as a sound effect for the pistol (though it kinda confused me at first)

I seems a little unbalanced overall, with it becoming too easy to win (especially with enough hitpoints). I also noticed if you just stand in the middle of the zombies, the zombies will kill themselves with attack damage until there's only one left.

Gameplay was definitely smooth though, and it's a good start into a concept. Also, congrats on finishing your first compo!
