Great game ! It's one of the game I've played with the most interesting take on the theme so far. The rythm aspect remind me a bit of Rythm Heaven, and the fact that everytime you die, a new instrument is added to the music is a great detail. I liked this game a lot, good job !

gamesplusjames 2018-04-25 03:17

That was a really cool take on the genres. It's fun to see how other people took the stealth rhythm idea :) I really like the music, and moving to the beat felt great. Picking up the boombox was pretty sweet too. This is one I would like to see more of for sure. Nice work!

Really excellent job! A great idea for a mechanic combined with some really solid level design and a rockin' soundtrack. The idea for the boombox was really a neat way to manipulate enemy movement.

azargaz 2018-04-25 08:26

Really fun idea, graphics are lacking but the audio more than makes up for it.

zyuxis 2018-04-25 08:31

Awesome musical combination! The levels felt solid in this, and the dialogue at the start had me laughing. Good job on the design and idea and great job on the humor and music :]

I am a smooth criminal. Great job man. Feel free to drop a review in our game https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/41/boomball

nanolotl 2018-04-25 12:25

Amazing.

brendan-toy 2018-04-25 12:25

haha i liked groovy snake :P fun concept, however i think it would have been more challenging if you could move off beat as well and that would alert the enemies too. but maybe you could add that as a hard mode :P well done :)

phil-busuttil 2018-04-25 12:54

Great mix of ideas for the theme, and the music was great :)

shrinjoy-fox 2018-04-25 17:54

Good game man

ragtagradical 2018-04-26 07:35

This game is wonderful. I love the audio and the humor. I want to see more adventures of Groovy Snake.

wfmg 2018-04-26 08:07

Pretty cool game, overall, but it could be better. One thing would be to turn off the bilinear filtering on the textures.

darby-costello 2018-04-26 10:54

I thought the graphics were really fitting for this. You've done the right thing in working to your strengths, which has produced a simply yet charming rhythm game, with some well thought out puzzle elements. I'm usually terrible at these kinds of games but I got "Smooth Criminal"... so I guess that's good, right? Great job.

pickens-inc 2018-04-26 15:36

Brilliant entry, I loved it, whilst being simultaenously terrible at it. Not tapping and having to hold it down was a little confusing, and I think it might be a little bit easier to see what's going on if the cubes were joined together (perhaps isometric might work?). Either way, the music was great, the gameplay challenge (at least for an idiot like me), and the premise amusing and innovative. Good job! I had a good time playing this on stream.

This is probably the highest rating I have give any game so far. I think this game is brilliant. The only thing that kind of drove me nuts was that I wish it had more tracks. Great Job.

blakemcdeezy 2018-04-27 09:10

There was this time in the game I was stepping on a spike trap, and under the pressure kept mispelling 'jump'! Haha, managed to type it a millisecond before the trap went off :) Really great idea, amazingly well executed - great job! EDIT: This is the second time I've commented on my own page instead of the game I am rating :|

dovakla 2018-04-27 16:29

This is really clever. It got a little frustrating a couple of times, but the puzzles never felt unfair or too difficult. I think it could also use a progression system where you get songs that let you move more steps at a time, although going down to two instead of three didn't feel too bad since the puzzles were still good.

I also love how it ends. Good job!

daanvanyperen 2018-04-27 17:25

Liked it! The color equals line of sight mechanic was very intuitive. Didn't get very far though, struggled on the third level getting past the yellow guard.

automatonvx 2018-04-27 19:19

Fun take on the theme, stealth rhythm, why not. Overall had a nice fun feel with a bit of backstory, details like the throbbing heads and beat boxes throwing notes. The core mechanic, was more puzzley than rhythm exactly but was still fun. Played till the end. Only criticism, somehow i found the isometric layout and the fact that up went to the tile just above me instead of diagonally up threw me off a couple of times, but the other way would also have thrown me sometimes, isometric layouts are just confusing since different games handle movement direction differently, if the tiles were just connected it would be more obvious perhaps. Just a small point. Anyway great job.

arche-san 2018-04-27 21:22

Excellent mix between stealth game and rhythm game. I understood late characters bounce head when moving/can move: it is so useful. Great job!

blakemcdeezy 2018-04-28 10:11

@daanvanyperen yeah, level 3 was a bit of a difficulty spike! Too bad you didn't get to see Level 4 though - that's when the beat drops :)

@automatonvx Cheers man! I agree with you about the layout. At first the game was just straight 2D but it wasn't looking that good so I changed it. But yeah, as you mentioned I found that the up/diagonal movement got pretty confusing - After the jam ends, I think I may work on this game a bit more. Fixing the layout / design will be what I work on first.

Thanks for all your comments guys! I've loved playing your games and plan to play a whole bunch more before the jam ends. Cheers!

matt-pattabhi 2018-04-28 20:46

Wouldn't think this blend was possible ! Gj

ted-carter 2018-04-28 21:15

Wow, these 2 genres combined really well actually! Waiting around in a stealth game isn't usually in fixed time segments, so it really became a puzzle. Well done!

secretpocketcat 2018-04-29 14:21

Great entry, the only thing I'd have liked would have been more rhythm-driven gamplay as this really felt more like a puzzle game than a rhythm one, but I'm pretty damn bad at those so maybe it's for the best  (Or maybe it's just 'cause I was so bad at tapping to the beat that I ended up just holding it al the time.

2018-05-01 20:22

Neat concept! I included it in my Ludum Dare 41 compilation video series, if you’d like to take a look. :) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CCS-SbQWjlE

hiki911 2018-05-05 18:18

nice and simple game, GJ!

fashionbatman 2018-05-07 17:15

I loved this! I made a rhythm stealth game for the Ludum Dare 40, and it's great to see other people takes on them! Really good job all around. "Groovy Snake" got me.

adhesion 2018-05-13 02:47

Nice! Really cool concept, good music, and the intro is great. Pretty fun to figure out the puzzle elements, although I found it a little tedious to have to wait for certain guards to turn around, and it would feel a lot better if you could tap on the beat instead of having to hold down the key. I ended up getting stuck on one of the levels with 2 boomboxes and 3 guards. Still this is a really solid game, would be great to see more of this. Awesome work!

kpded 2018-05-14 13:00

Nice game! Well done with the genres mix

f1krazy 2018-05-14 19:31

Very fun! I got stuck very quickly, but that's because I suck at both rhythm games and stealth games, so it's no surprise that the two put together is a nightmare for me. I'm so thankful you added in the ability to just hold the buttons down.

Still, even if I wasn't that good at it, it was great fun watching the obvious Solid Snake parody disco-dancing around the room like John Travolta while the guards all spin in circles and bob their heads in time with the (very good, if a little repetitive) soundtrack. The obvious weak point is the graphics, but I can't really fault you for that because I can't draw either :P Well done!
