Enjoyed the music, but my coordination skills are awful

krp 2018-04-23 02:28

Enjoyed music, graphics need lots of work though.

bloodyaugust 2018-04-23 02:29

Wow, you have some serious musical talent! Really enjoyed your creations. The game played really well, even in the web, which is hard to do with a rhythm game (so extra points for that). I'd have loved to see a cleaner interface: all the pixelly images kind of distracted from the experience. Overall, extremely well done!

notgreat 2018-04-23 02:56

This is a fine rhythm game, but I really don't get the combat part. I got that the health goes down when I miss/poor, is damage based on my combo or something? I don't really see how it combines the genres at all- this seems entirely a rhythm game.

Also, it was hard to keep the lane-finger mapping for some reason. Perhaps add a gap between the 2nd and 3rd lanes to simulate the keyboard separation?

adroitconceptions 2018-04-23 11:34

well done music... bosses could have used some better art

igorimagine 2018-04-23 14:26

Good rhythm game, I don't really see the genre mixing.

kataware 2018-04-23 23:34

@ehtd @krp @bloodyaugust @notgreat @Jason Kennedy @igorimagine Thanks for the input!

@bloodyaugust Yea, I really couldn't decide on an aesthetic for the game so it got caught in between two.

@notgreat Indeed, the combat part is a really shoddy, poorly designed system. I mean, hit notes = enemy lose hp, miss notes = you lose it? It seems more like a skin for a rhythm game, and I've been toying with a lot of ideas such as only applying damage when losing combos/beating the level, or perhaps trying to make it a turn based game of some sort. We'll see ;p

@Jason Kennedy I was rushed xD

@igorimagine and yea, I planned for RPG x Rhythm game, but time got me TvT

blinkenlights 2018-04-23 23:42

I love the aesthetics and the sound, IT'S SO POLISHED! I'm jealous.

kataware 2018-04-24 01:52

@Blinkenlights Thanks xd, even if the bosses textures are QUITE lack luster ;p

n00b 2018-04-25 02:05

This game is really fun. I did find myself only really caring about the rhythm portion of the game so maybe there could have been more done to integrate the combat aspect into it. But theme aside, its still a good game.

megrabbit 2018-04-25 02:14

I really love this game, but even when I'm doing awesome, it kicks me out a few seconds into a sing and makes me start again (screenshot below). I think it only happens on this level.

The music kicks ass.

nerobius 2018-04-25 02:15

Cool idea man, I would have liked it if i could've changed the keys required for the lanes. I personally would've rathered to do it one handed instead of two handed. The music was really good too. If you are interested in original music, check out my game - all music and sound FX are original - especially the main theme at the start.

Once again, nice work.

kataware 2018-04-25 02:20

@n00b @MegRabbit @Nerobius Thanks for your input!

@n00b Yea, the rhythm was basically all that was in the game, the combat aspect was nonexistent!

@MegRabbit Perhaps you are dying? XD In the screenshot it looks like your healthbar is at 0. If its too hard maybe I should tone down the difficulty ;p Hitting 100 and 50 notes restore health, but missing and hitting 25 makes you lose health until you eventually die. I've noticed the HTML5 version being a bit buggier and picky about timing than normal, perhaps thats an issue.

@Nerobius Yea, I should have implement a system like that. My original game had 5 keys, using the spacebar hence the gap between DF and JK. If you've ever played osu, the osu!mania 4k gamemode is similar to this, and thats why I kept it like that. Once I'm done with my homework I'll be happy to check your game out!

megrabbit 2018-04-25 02:23

I might be dying. It's super hard to tell. :P

kataware 2018-04-25 02:27

@MegRabbit I’m not quite sure then xD

legavroche 2018-04-25 02:31

Really fun game and big fan of the audio. Wanted to mention that I attempted Todes Fantasia on the web build and there was an error when clicking the retry button. Just a minor inconvenience, as I had to exit back to the main menu each time. Please have a setting to turn on infinite health, it would've been nice for people without much coordination (like me) to still be able to hear your songs in their entirety. Great work!

kataware 2018-04-25 02:44

@legavroche OH MY Why did I never think of that?!

I was thinking of adding mods to the game like 2x speed but I never once thought of making the game easier xD And I'm uploading the soundtrack right now, not quite the same experience as playing the game but anyone who wants to listen to the tracks unimpeded may now do so as they please ^-^

And thanks!

legavroche 2018-04-25 02:51

@Kataware, Great, looking forward to hearing those tracks!

noahro 2018-04-25 02:59

Really fun rhythm game, had fun trying to get the highest scores! The songs are really great!

It's probably just be me and my lack of rhythm game experience, but somehow the controls don't stick with me. I always get confused when multiple notes in the same row come at me (when you have to hit 2 or more keys at the same time). I don't really play rhythm games, so my opinion might be invalid :P

I really liked the menu and level select screens!

conroy 2018-04-25 03:06

Awesome job! game played very well, and the systems worked very well, game appears very polished, two thumbs up bud!!

doctormozart 2018-04-25 03:34

I love rhythm games so I had to check this out. Loved the menu design + gameplay, well done! I didn't find any of the levels too difficult except for the last, however, I did manage to get through it (without beating the boss though - dang!)

Finally.png As per your request, I wouldn't say I beat it, because the boss didn't die! But I survived! Thats... Good enough, right? :p

Edit: How could I not mention the music? I have played Puzzle Skills many times now just to jam along! Thanks for sharing the soundtrack!

kataware 2018-04-25 04:03

@NoahRo @Conroy @DoctorMozart Thanks for your input!

and @DoctorMozart OMG YOU DID IT XD Well done! Don't worry, you did beat it, I'm fairly sure its impossible to kill the boss on that level. If you had full combo'ed it I would pay you on the spot xD And thanks, I usually try to make my music catchy ;p

@NoahRo The controls aren't the best xd I wish now that I had added a way to remap it. ANd don't worry the 'chords' or hitting more than one at once were a bit confusing to me at first as well xD

balance686 2018-04-25 16:23

Great submission! I really enjoy the music and the game is fun to play. My first 5 or 6 attempts were admittedly terrible lol but once I got into the groove I felt like I was actually banging out the melodies. Very well done!

kataware 2018-04-25 23:12

@balance686 I’m glad you liked it! Thanks!

caterein 2018-04-26 00:23

Music is lovely, well done! As others have mentioned, I think the combat part of lacking - maybe trying it as a rhythm/stacking tetris-style game would've worked? Cheers!

kataware 2018-04-26 02:59

@caterein Ooh great idea! and Cheers!

ashtrail 2018-04-26 08:37

I don't really have any idea how to rate this game ^^". It felt very unique/personal in a way which I found touching. The music is great too as many people have said.

My main problem was the control. I'm not the best at rythm games but I can usually perfect the easier levels but here after the first level I got shredded, I think it was mostly the controls and not the actual difficulty. Although I like touch based rythm games, so anything with keys is already a bummer for me.

The graphics aren't the best but I didn't feel like that was really a problem, the games blends pretty well together.

I don't really know what you intend to do with the game but you could definitely do something interesting with it. I subbed you on itch because I'm intrigued what you'll do next.

Good job and good continuation :) !

alchemic 2018-04-27 00:38

Great music! The web version was a bit off sync for me, had to use the native version. I was only able to get to (what I assume was) about halfway through that last song.

kataware 2018-04-28 00:36

@Ashtrail Thanksss! Yea, the controls were a bit. . . strange to say the least. I had wanted to use 5 keys before, but switched last minute, causing a gap between df and jk. Perhaps fghj would have worked better or something. In addition, hitting 25 notes caused a loss of health which perhaps wasn't a great idea.

@Alchemic I don't deploy to web often so yea, sorry bout that xd And halfway through is pretty good! Thanks for playing!

alejandrodecea 2018-04-30 15:11

It was very fun to play! My fave theme was "PUZZLESKILLS". Although the rest was pretty good as well. Now let's be nitpicky:

- Some notes in "UNRAVEL" are "out of rythm" if that makes sense. - The selection scroll bar is a bit frustrating when you have to select a song to the right, it's too easy to accidentally select a song  - You should be able to restart the level after beating it.

PS: Did I notice a DDLC leitmotif in the menu theme? Or is it just me

kataware 2018-05-02 01:18

@AlejandrodeCea WOOOWW Good job on Todes Fantasia! A B is the highest so far xd!

Unravel was pretty bad towards then end, and one problem with the notes was that some notes started "in between beats" of the normal bpm. The song is 135 bpm I believe, and my tick system doubles that to 270 bpm, but cannot place notes any faster than 270 bpm, hence why some are off. Also, I got lazy xD

The selection bar is a bit wierd, and I've always use the scroll wheel ;p I forgot to fix it

Oh I never thought of restarting! Common sense, once again I forgot xD

Thanks for playing!

PSS: I listened to it again and it does sound a bit like your reality from ddlc, maybe my mind had use that as inspiration in the back of my head xd

lotus 2018-05-03 14:28

The game is great! Good game, good art and well polished! But to balance the two genres, I feel like the monster/boss to have some kind of attack, and you can use music to defend. It also possibly adds new kind of nodes in game. So you made all the art assets, sound assets in only 48 hours? That is amazing!

kataware 2018-05-04 01:54

@lotus Ooh, an interesting proposition. That does make sense. And yea, everything in 48, although the "art" could have been a great amount better xd

Thanks!
