After playing it through, I left it open running in background. Love the music @VegaCide

vegacide 2017-08-01 01:36

@pandorfa Thanks! :smile:

vegacide 2017-08-01 01:40

Like the music in this game? If so, I'm glad you do! :D An extended version of the main theme is available for free download on my SoundCloud account!

I think it's hilarious that as you bleed out the window just fades away and then closes. Great work on this. And also, thanks for checking out my game!

vegacide 2017-08-01 03:08

@cameronpenner Thanks for checking out *our* game! :D

The mechanic of the screen fading out is super original! Love it!

joltjab 2017-08-01 04:56

Thanks @LJFMX ! It wouldn't have been possible without the super smarts of Grimjoey!

superpokeunicorn 2017-08-01 06:38

This game is really great! Having blood packets be manual is a nice touch. I love the tension of trying to optimize your movements, trying to go as far as possible without using a blood packet. Of course the window fading out is a nice touch. It certainly makes this one of the more innovative games I've played this Ludum Dare. I always love it when games mess with the interface of the computer itself. Plus the limited visibility adds to the risk of not using a blood packet. Also the audio and visuals are top notch. The music is excellent! Overall, this is a really great entry. Great work!

kittyinthestudio 2017-08-01 06:44

thank you @superpokeunicorn

pixelgriffin 2017-08-01 06:52

Awesome innovation with the window frame growing dimmer. I wish it had more of an affect on the gameplay though, it felt a little superfluous.

Good work!

uzyfeo 2017-08-01 22:17

I'm giving this solid 5/5.

Graphics were really great, music and sound effects too, levels were challenging and gameplay wise game felt very smooth.

Fun factor is really great with this one for me, puzzle games are my thing so you definitely hit mark for me on this one.

Really great job guys!

vegacide 2017-08-02 02:54

We're glad you liked it! @uzyfeo

reuh 2017-08-02 17:54

Love the mechanic of the screen fading out. This, the music and the grey & red graphics really create tension! Trying to optimize your movement as you see less and less the screen...

And the level design was well done. Challenging and with the difficulty gradually increasing.

If you plan on improving the game later, please add level saving. I went too far and my window closed, now I really want to finish the game but D:

All my points to you (well, except humor, but...).

miltonnh25 2017-08-02 20:02

Great job with this game. The levels were interesting, the art gave the game a good feel, the music was great and the fade out mechanic really made it unique. Definitely one of more solid games I have played this jam. Keep up the good work.

ectucker1 2017-08-02 20:21

These levels remind me of the strength puzzles in Pokemon games.

I really enjoyed the music, and the dimming effect forced me to take a balance between potentially needing less blood, and actually being able to see.

Really good job.

heilfingd 2017-08-02 20:33

Loved the game. We used a similar fading mechanic in our game but combining it with a puzzle system makes it more nerve-wrecking. The music helps too in that respect, as others have mentioned it's fantastic.

The game is addictive and I kept going through the levels trying desperately not to bleed out (that trail of blood left behind by Giuseppe is wonderfully gore)

Great entry!

condensate 2017-08-02 20:51

This game is really great. The levels were well designed, challenging but not frustrating, the music was great and really added to the tone, and the window fading effect was awesome. Definitely one of the best games I've played so far.

moski 2017-08-02 20:57

This game actually gave me goosebumps and the chills. Extremely unnerving. I loved it.

On my first playthrough, I didn't know what was happening, and I thought that I was doing something wrong, or that I was being pranked. But on the second one, I started to catch on with how the life worked and about the blood packs, and it became extremely clear that this game was not toying around.

While it's very simple, that the game itself is always getting closer to closing itself added an extra layer of urgency, forcing me to take better actions. As the poor unintelligible being kept bleeding out, I kept trying to find blood packages and trying to move as little as possible as to not get closer to death. I died and died again until it became a chore, but for the time that the game's mechanics were fresh, it was a blast.

I can't think on how it could have been better executed. The music was fantastic (Way to go, Vegacide!), and the simple yet dreadful sprites were a wicked charm. Congratulations on making such a great experience!

If you've got a moment, it'd mean a lot to us if you could [give our game a try](https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/39/joulethief-charge-your-phone). Once again, amazing job on the jam, and I hope that you get to enjoy other entries as well! Cheers! :whale:

This game is very good, it's a good concept and it could be further developed. A simple gameplay but very good.

vegacide 2017-08-02 21:55

oh my god, that is a lot of ratings. @moski @condensate @heilfingd @ectucker1 @miltonnh25 @reuh Thank you guys so much for the amazing reviews! I appreciate it, and I'm definitely sure that @JoltJab/@kittyinthestudio and the rest also appreciate it!

vegacide 2017-08-02 22:02

BTW, nice game @moski

mspawa 2017-08-02 22:09

At first I was like "OMG what is happening? Maybe the game is glitched or something!" So I came back to the comment section and I understood everything xD It is really a cool gameplay, But! the game really had a glitch, because everytime I lost, it trows me an "error" message, like "it is not responding" and I have to close it and re-open it. I really love puzzle games, so I enjoyed it a lot! Nice art and really nice music :) Congratulations!!!!

joltjab 2017-08-03 21:15

yeah like @vegacide said, thanks everyone for your comments! @mspawa Error at a game over? Strange, though the game is meant to end there so the error shouldn't hurt gameplay. Thanks for pointing it out!

obidubi 2017-08-04 02:14

This is a really cool game! The idea is original (yet dark) and the graphics and music are very well done. I thought the dimming screen was a cool and unique way to show the player how much energy and blood they had left. Although, it did make it difficult to determine exactly how far I could go before I needed another blood pack. Overall the level design and overall look and feel of the game was great. Good job!

jcmonkey 2017-08-04 03:09

nice turn out on the game man, i watched you make some of this on stream. it came out good. nice work!

2017-08-05 14:34

Really neat game! I included it in my Ludum Dare 39 compilation video series, if you’d like to take a look :) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0tnbJWl_w0c

mianagames 2017-08-05 23:30

Great game guys. Congrats.

cudabear 2017-08-06 01:35

The puzzle aspect of this game was excellently done, besides the second level I never felt like I was super safe and didn't need to actually figure out an efficient path. The fade-out as I die effect looks pretty bad, and hard to see what's going on depending on what the window is over. It would be nice if you did this effect differently, even if it still restricted vision. The music was really great! Graphics on the character and the blood splatters were also amazing! Tileset felt a little plain though.

Here's my playthrough of Giuseppe's Kidnapping that I did on Twitch :D Thanks JoltJab and crew for letting me play!

@jupiter-hadley @elysiagriffin Thank you guys so much for uploading the game! I love seeing the reactions haha :joy:

mrtroy 2017-08-15 03:25

Okay, I downloaded this game not knowing what to expect. As the screen started to fade I got wide eyed and smiley. This is one of the most clever(if not the most clever) I've played this Dare. I didn't finish but I'm going to keep at this thing until I conquer it. :D

aurel300 2017-08-20 20:11

We streamed your game with Danae plays on Twitch. :) Here's a link:

[Danae streams Ludum Dare 39: Day 3, part 1: Guiseppe's Kidnapping](https://youtu.be/LN1svjCl2z0?t=3h1m44s)

This game is very dark, and the combination of the cute little creature and the macabre bleeding mechanic is interesting. The music fits the game very nicely and the window fading out slowly is a nice touch. The level design could probably benefit from making the levels a bit less expansive and instead introduce more puzzle mechanics. Maybe also make the blood bags last a shorter time, so the player really has to count their steps! As it was, the last levels were mostly about patience. Also, the lack of ending is … depressing :D

Good job!

vegacide 2017-08-22 18:58

Sorry for the late reply, but we're glad that you guys enjoyed it! @aurel300 @mrtroy

I'd say 30th place in innovation is reasonably good.
