Very hard to get into, the game decided to stop letting me conquer territory, but the parts of the game that worked where pretty fun

multitudes22 2016-08-29 16:07

It's really, really fun. I would say it was maybe a bit confusing at the beginning, but once I got the hang of it it became something you really wanted to do well at. Great job, loved the gameplay, art, and sounds.

lightsoda 2016-08-29 16:19

Mechanically it seems fine, except the camera, could use some click+drag or similar :)

It was pretty confusing for me, it lacks feedback in a lot of areas, like why you win/lose against a cop, what a turn actually is. At first I was clicking on a thief and a tile back and forth because I wasn't sure what made him move.

onyon 2016-08-29 16:30

For some reason I like everything that contains hexagons. Neat game, but confusing at start

rockhoppergames 2016-08-29 16:34

I like the mood here, and the writing definitely fits that, but I don't think I ever saw any conclusion to the story. Perhaps I was missing something there?

exilegl 2016-08-29 17:14

Nice little game. I like the hexagons. It's a little slow to start, though.

oskardevelopment 2016-08-29 17:23

@RockhopperGames thanks! The game has 5 endings, there either losing against the cops or beating the cops gives you an ending with no conclusion to the story.

If time ends up or you are able to solve the mystery in time you get the other 3 endings!

@lightsoda WASD, arrows or clicking on the minimap! :)

@Multitudes22 Thanks a lot! :)

@LCMW_Spud That sounds strange? Did you have any thief alive to do the conquering?

@onyon I hope you liked it and that you figured out how to play! :)

oskardevelopment 2016-08-29 17:24

Congrats on the highscore btw! :)

jadernak 2016-08-29 20:41

I agree with some of the other comments, a better feedback would help a lot. I don't think it was that hard to figure out the controls though. The story and especially the mood were great. Btw the font size is terrible, I had to move my laptop close to figure out some numbers.

hackingroelz 2016-08-29 20:44

I love the gamplay! It's really simple, but it's very enjoyable. The only problem I have with it is that it's a bit confusing at the start and the font is a bit hard to read, but outside of that it's a very good game!

rudinskiz 2016-08-29 20:56

Very interesting, need more polish tho'.First fix the camera...make a game bit more difficult and that would be it :)

aun 2016-08-29 20:59

I do not really understand the goal of the game. Is it possible to kill policeman. At some point I had so much money that I could do anything I want (maybe increase difficulty.

vitineth 2016-08-29 21:04

Very, very fun to play. Simple but really enjoyable. It could help to have a little guide at the start, even just the text that's in the description. The writing style is very nice and a joy to read. The story is interesting, some of the options are a little disturbing but all round a good game. I could keep on playing for a while which is a good sign. A great game and a great submission.

senor-salty 2016-08-29 21:29

A cool idea with some very good writing, however the numerous bugs I encountered made me not able to finish this game. Fixing these would be a good idea, but I had fun nonetheless.

peachtreeoath 2016-08-30 03:30

You really like your hexagons don't you :)

bloodjohn 2016-08-30 04:38

I couldn't close the welcome letter. There are no clues. The game does not responds to any keys. The mouse does not work. I honestly tried, but nothing came of it. :(

rockhoppergames 2016-08-30 15:32

Okay, gave it another shot, and managed to get the cultist ending. I think you did make it a little too hard to get those endings, and the police death stacks are really frustrating when you have your entire game riding on a 50% chance to kill them...

Still, good effort for 48 hours!

oskardevelopment 2016-08-30 16:36

@Hackingroelz Thanks!

@Aun Yes, it's possible to kill the policemen. Game ending is either to survive until time run out, kill the police, die or to solve the mystery. If you are able to do all of those then you did a good job! :)

@vitineth Thanks! I will try to add more descriptions in future games!

@Senor Salty I'm sorry to hear that. What bugs did you experience and what OS were you playing on?

@PeachTreeOath I like strategy games, and I believe hexagons are a good way to make strategy games. I probably intend to make 2-3 more hexagon Ludum Dare entries before I attempt either a provincial or non-geometric strategy. :)

@BloodJohn I'm sorry to hear that! :( Did you try to restart the game? What OS did you play on?

@RockhopperGames Thanks! From a game design viewpoint I agree with you, actually at first I intended to make it harder, though when I finished the game myself I felt that I had to put into a bit too much effort. After the release I felt I perhaps should've made it even easier, though I guess hindsight is easy. Thanks for playing and commenting, it really helps! :)

nervous-composers 2016-08-31 17:01

I loved the writing! But the gameplay was a little too confusing for me. I tried, but it was pretty hard to get into.

jacksendary 2016-08-31 20:49

Overall an interesting take on a "clicker-ish" game, a bit confusing at first but over all this could turn into something awesome, personally I'd like some more meaning full decisions in the game to make it more challenging.

gonutz 2016-08-31 21:38

Your screen shots look interesting, unfortunately I do not have Java installed and I would like not to. Maybe consider using something that lets you create an executable file without any dependencies the next time :)

josho 2016-08-31 22:49

Cool game! was a little confused though at the start

tmpxyz 2016-09-01 07:22

The story seems interesting, but I cannot tell the results of my decisions.

And the font are too small, I have to gaze on the screen.

cyberstarlight 2016-09-01 09:51

I managed to kill all of the police, wasn't too hard to do.
Hexagonal games are nice, It's fun taking over territories like that, but I felt like the building was a bit crazy, being able to build the same building on every last tile of the game (which I did XD), and the battle system as I understood it, of higher number takes it all, was a bit too simple I think, I could throw 10 stacks of 10 against 1 stack of 30 with no effect at all..
btw, is there a difference between the opium and gambling buildings aside from money?

I manages to find no bugs which is really good! it works as it should, I do agree as said many times that the font is too small.
maybe I'll come back and try to get the other endings too, good job on this one.

mark_ffrench 2016-09-01 11:24

Hi, great work! I got into quite a frustrating endgame, where neither I nor the police could quite get an edge over one another, Just marching around with huge 500 stacks. If you've managed to get the police down to one final station, that should probably be making things easier for you, so that you can have a decisive victory. If anything it seemed like they were spawning faster than ever. Good work though, I like the events system.

oskardevelopment 2016-09-01 15:07

@CyberStarLight Thanks for playing! Yes, there's no damage functionality, so if you attack multiple times it will not have any extra effects. If you want to merge or customize your stacks then you can do so in the "Army" tab. Opium causes more Infamy than Gambling Dens do, Infamy is both your score and also affects how well and aggressive the police plays against you. The less Infamy the less difficult the opposition.

@Mark Ffrench The big stacks of Deaths are quite nerve wrecking! :) A tip to combat the police is to burn down the police stations after you capture them. The higher score (Infamy) you get, the better the police become. The kinder you play the less policemen you get (less score), the more evil you play the more policemen you get (higher score) and the more heathen you play the closer to the apocalypse you get (if you sacrifice children to the tentacles or crucify the vicar the apocalypse gets closer in time). I think you can lessen the time before the apocalypse with about 12 years if you maximize the heathen playstyle.

@nervous.composers Thanks for playing!

@tmpxyz Thanks for the comments! I will try to improve the fonts and add more feedback in future Ludum Dare!

gassasin 2016-09-01 21:25

This game is AWESOME!! I dunno how u menage to finish this on time :D game need couple upgrades like better font and maybe tutorial at begining ! besides of that game is realy cool!

novotmike 2016-09-01 22:37

This game has such a nice moody atmosphere. The music goes well with the theme and the gameplay is very interesting. It took me a while to figure things out, but after few minutes I got a hang of it and it was fun. Sometimes I got a bit stuck fighting endlessly, but it is very cool game. Great work!

ryusui 2016-09-01 22:52

Not a fan. No tutorial, no interface feedback...I feel like I'm clicking stuff and getting a response half the time, the other time not, and I have no idea why. Also, fullscreen-only? Why isn't there a windowed option?

acotis 2016-09-03 21:53

Not bad. I was confused at first by the lack of instructions. The music was nice, but the sfxr sound effects and pixel-y sprites killed the mood. I like the theme of it, how it highlights the tiles blue or red depending on who 'owns' them, but to be honest...it was kind of non-engaging.

This is total guesswork, but maybe try making a simpler game next time and focusing a little more on polish? I think you'll get a better result :)

xesenix 2016-09-07 00:23

Interesting game but it has some intuitivism problems i couldnt do anything without reading your description. I dont know why you choose right mouse button as way to command. I would made some kind of indicator in UI who is selected and keep all controls (selection and commands under left mouse button). Second thing on my 1920x1280 screen fonts were small and i am im blind i didnt see them clearly so i missed whole story i clicked those questions not knowing what they meant. I suggest use more readable font.

komilll 2016-09-09 09:17

Game concept is great, espacially if it was polished and improved with more units and building. My only problem is that until I've read comments/description I didn't really get the game (right click) so I didn't know what to intuitively do. Also I think that your choices should have more impact. I didn't feel like texts I've read and chosen an option does matter at all. Overall that's nice concept but only this, it needs a lot of improvments but might be great.
