Uh, got an error.

I restarted the game and gave it another go though; didn't have any issues that time.

I like the aesthetic, but the game is really confusing at first (I guess that was the point eh?)

thescopelessone 2015-04-20 10:31

I notice that if you click the buton above the red one the game crash and if you klick the red one when the earth has exploaded the game crash as well.

lespingouinsduciel 2015-04-20 10:32

An original concept where you launch probes to listen for aliens and guess what they want. I like the innovation! But the game is a bit hard to handle at first. Good work though, was fun to play. :)

designernap 2015-04-20 10:35

Ah! I see the crash! taking a look now. :)

ym 2015-04-20 10:47

Getting lots of fatal errors :(

action number 1
of Mouse Event for Left Button
for object obj_spaceButton:
Push :: Execution Error - Variable Get -5.fakePOW(100024, -2147483648)
at gml_Object_obj_spaceButton_Mouse_0

Never figured out what this button does because it always crashed, also if I tried to fire once the Earth was destroyed, similar message.

Once I stopped doing those things though I made it through the whole game. Getting near misses is hard!
I like the idea that sometimes Aliens just need a hand with something. At least, that was my interpretation, did I get that right?

designernap 2015-04-20 10:51

Found it. Fix incoming! In your screen shot you can actually see the error too! it was a 2am capslock fail... it should have said "fakepow" instead of "fakePOW" - Fixed now :)

ajopart 2015-04-20 10:55

Interesting entry and concept. I had to nuke them. BTW, there is a fatal error when you click on the button right under the speed selection button

designernap 2015-04-20 10:57

FIXED THE ERROR EVERYONE :D thank you for your help. New version is available and I have updated the link. Thanks for persevering! :)

cgriff 2015-04-20 11:18

I really like the probe mechanic (and the opportunity to write that sentence), along with the feeling of having to discover what everything does yourself. Kudos also on the fact no text is used at all. It can be confusing at first, but I urge everyone to continue trying to find out what it all means and complete it!

designernap 2015-04-20 11:36

Ah! just fixed the errors on the buttons for AFTER the earth being destroyed :) same issue, 2am Typos!!! version 3 ready now

esayitch 2015-04-20 13:09

I liked the no-text thing. Graphics are pretty okay as well, and sfx sit very well with the game. Was pretty confused throughout... I noticed the signals change when I got missiles close the ship, but I didn't understand what I was supposed to do.
The concept is very strange, in a great way, really liked it :D
Good luck.

handkor 2015-04-20 13:58

Good idea that might be worth continuing and releasing.

xaychru04 2015-04-20 14:29

It would be nice to see the direction the probe is going to follow, and the fire button makes the game crash when the planet is destroyed, but anyway I liked the concept, it's quite innovative!

edve98 2015-04-20 15:56

Very nice! Just... A bit hard to understand what is going on... :/

designernap 2015-04-20 16:00

Thanks esayitch, Handkor and edve98! And yes Xaychru, I just found that crash and fixed it. Version 4 uploading now :) Glad you all enjoyed it though.

zeriver 2015-04-20 16:34

Really neat idea. At first it is a bit ambiguous what to do but player can quickly get grasp on the basic rules. I like the art style and "image language". It really is a good Ludum Dare entry and i hope more people will see it.

In my case the answer for aliens was coffee mug :D

oskardevelopment 2015-04-20 16:35

Quite an innovative take on the unexpected weapon! I love the graphics and the audio. I thought it a bit hard to understand how to play though, took me a while before I understood that what I clicked on caused missiles to be shot at the enemy space ships! :p

Good luck!

asobitech 2015-04-20 18:55

Good job on the bug crushing :D

asobitech 2015-04-20 19:09

Ahhh I get it now, you have to try for a near miss, so your probe gets close enough to scan without hitting them. I enjoyed the moody music and the art style. Great job on using minimal text.

strong99 2015-04-21 08:18

Loved the ending and the idea! Controls were a bit confusing at first but easy to use aftwards. Love the icons. Clear enough for me!

perecil 2015-04-21 11:40

This game remembers me a bit the old Captain Blood game where you would use pictograms to communicate with aliens. I love the idea to send probes NEAR the aliens without touching them.

ranmara 2015-04-21 11:51

Like it! Very clever - it took me a couple of tries to work out what I needed to do, but was satisfying when I did. One thing though....unskippable cutscenes! Would have been nice to skip back to the start of the game once I'd been destroyed.

designernap 2015-04-21 12:07

aaah yes, you CAN skip the cut scenes... I didnt manage to include that as an instruction with no time left. Space Bar skips :) I will add that to the text above. Thank you Ranmara!

maunovaha 2015-04-21 15:41

good graphics and nicely put together! :)

dyfer 2015-04-21 16:01

few trouble on the game :s

shatley123 2015-04-21 17:45

Spiffy game.

filthyincubation666 2015-04-22 12:57

not bad

jupiter_hadley 2015-04-22 19:35

Neat idea, with no words. Its quite the trial and error game, but I really enjoyed it! I included it in part 3 of my Ludum Dare 32 compilation video series, if you would like to take a look :) https://youtu.be/Q8RvVjW24Io

tayl1r 2015-04-22 20:05

Nice work!

de_von 2015-04-22 20:21

Awesome idea!

hotboxgames 2015-04-22 22:18

Awesome idea! Think the control interface and such needs to be a bit more intuitive, but for an LD entry good work! :D

peterfsat 2015-04-22 22:22

Pretty detailed game, but I don't get why it's an unconventional weapon... There should also be some way to predict the path the probe will go.

pikmin4000 2015-04-22 22:27

Well I beat the game by throwing a coffee mug the size of the Earth at some aliens ;)

designernap 2015-04-22 22:29

heheh, Well Peterfsat, Pikmin4000 answered this for me! :) My original thinking was the "Enigma" machine from WW2 and code breaking. In this game the machine decodes the Aliens intentions, and you have to get probes close to find out what they want. SO both the method and the final weapons are unconventional! :)

uannaff 2015-04-22 22:50

I got a little confused and then i got it, I think you could do something to maintain the idea of confusing the user but making it easier to figure something out at first to catch their attention, after they are hooked you can confuse the helloutofthem. I liked it in general, good job!

kaiseangames 2015-04-23 05:38

Great game.

I just miss the option to decrease the angle and the power. But maybe I am missing something.

Anyway, very nice concept and implementation.

arcturusdeluxe 2015-04-23 20:15

Really cool idea. Took me a minute to figure out but eventually I did. Neat take on an artillery concept, having to get as near as possible without hitting. Nice graphics and audio too.

lynx 2015-04-24 04:48

Very interesting concept, like other's have said, the lack of text really provides a great intro to getting the player's brain into deciphering mode.

jhell 2015-04-24 08:52

This was so good and also so frustrating x). Actually I would have enjoyed some text to really know what's going on.

Also a right click option on the controls to decrease their value would have been awesome.

rudra 2015-04-24 16:43

Great graphics, and the idea is nicely put up !

jackyjjc 2015-04-26 05:43

It is a fun game, at first I didn't know what too do but after getting used to it, it became quite fun. There aren't much replayability to the game though, after I beat it once it became quite easy.

flummox2d 2015-05-01 11:24

Awww, they're like me: they wanted coffee all along :D Good work :)

shrimpgunpistolshrimpslingergunnershrimps 2015-05-01 14:54

humor... X ;)
The intro and the credits are REALLY long and unskippable. otherwise fun concept :)

yuigoto 2015-05-01 19:13

Whoa! Took me a little bit of time to play it but finally did it! I loved the game! This concept about launching probes to listen the ships without hitting'em is awesome!

Without text hinting in the interface, I felt a bit lot, but that's also the charm in this game. To me, it felt like being a little kid in front of a panel full of buttons, hitting everything that can be pressed to see what happens. And that sensation is really, really FUN! (I did this a lot in my father's work when I was a kid).

When I finally got the hangs of playing and understood how everything worked (angles, speed, sounds), I enjoyed it a LOT! And it gave me that feeling that this could be expanded into a really nice game. :)

Really nice work with GM:S! Cheers!

designernap 2015-05-03 15:36

Thanks everyone for the comments on the game :) Really glad most people had a great time and quite happy with the end result.
