I know there are some weird circumstances where the AI sometimes freezes up. Unfortunately the AI code was not organized enough due to the time limit and was way too complex to debug these issues out of prior to submission. If the game gets stuck, I recommend restarting. Hope you all like it. Please leave me comments, both good and bad! :)

Very cool. Also very difficult ;)

leafo 2012-12-17 07:54

Cool game.

My version of love uses luajit, I had to patch your source code a few times in order to get it running. Here are the errors I saw:

Cool game otherwise. The hero was pretty aggressive and it made it challenging.

sclark39 2012-12-17 16:52

Thanks for that, leafo. I updated it so my *.love can support luajit as well. I'm still trying to get a love-webplayer version, but it really doesn't like me.

Great little game. I think it's worth a few weeks of effort to flesh it out.

emveyh 2012-12-17 17:24

Great job, cool idea :D it's a bit difficult, though

zompi 2012-12-17 17:26

Well, being an evil guy is hard... But you can always burn everything :D
Strange game, not in my type... But graphics is cute and it works.

lanoiadimuu 2012-12-17 17:31

Simple and fun mechanics. Loved the score system. The wandering hero really adds difficulty by killing minions.

edocentrique 2012-12-17 17:32

I really like the concept ! I'd like to see an updated version of this !

nihilocrat 2012-12-17 17:36

Pretty cool! Nice UI, it gets pretty difficult if you aren't able to coordinate your defense well, 'cause you will lose your monsters one-by-one and might not have the gold to buy more.

zzforrest 2012-12-17 18:00

This is a fantastic game! It's difficult, but fun. The graphics are appropriate. I don't really mind the lack of sound, so I'll just put N/A for that. It is extremely innovative. I love this game! 5/5

somfunambulist 2012-12-17 18:01

I really love the gameplay mechanics in this one! This is one of the few that I'll be moving into my games folder to play more in the future!

fonserbc 2012-12-17 18:10

Hard to keep the fortress! The heroe is too strong :P

The goat conratulated me, I'm proud.

JFlegle 2012-12-18 01:28

Great game, I would like it better if I could heal my units or produce them faster and cheaper.

sclark39 2012-12-18 01:36

You can heal your units by making them hold at the fortress. :)

crowbeak 2012-12-18 02:40

This is fantastic. :D I really enjoy it.

lur 2012-12-18 02:47

So cool! Should definitely be expanded upon, with the hero leveling up (does he already?), building big bosses but risking the hero getting great loot, etc :)

lekochen 2012-12-18 03:27

Really like the cute little animation! Good job!

Btw thank you for playing my game and giving feedback. I replied your comment and added some description to it. I'd appreciate if you could try it again, thanks! :)

zzforrest 2012-12-18 14:36

I saw your comment on my game, and I discovered the problem. My compiler does not have, by default, a redistribution system. Because of this, I can't do anything about it. The source no longer works with my compiler, and I can't find anything online about it. I hope, though I can work everything out for next time. I will remember your name, though, cause you rock.

eraldo 2012-12-19 05:26

Great game.. apart from the AI bugs.

orangeez 2012-12-21 16:15

It crashed, when hero had nowhere to go, but otheriwse, it's ingenious, well-balanced and awesome game!

brotherst 2012-12-21 17:20

You say the villain never wins but I think I did! The hero had nowhere to go because the screen was filled with my units so he got stuck for a while and then ran off the top left corner of the screen, at which point it errors.

The frame rate gets very choppy too. It went down to about 4fps by the end, and I'm on a powerful computer. If you got the framerate down and added some more features, this would be an amazing game.

Right now it's the most addictive game I've played in the past 3 ludums. I want to see more features like the hero finding items to use against you and leveling up. And also being able to level up your units, maybe by spending money on your fortress. So many possibilities!

bentog 2012-12-21 17:29

Great idea, and nicely done!

sclark39 2012-12-21 20:14

@OrangeeZ Thanks! Sorry about the crash. I barely had enough time to finish this and so never actually was able to test dominating the hero so thoroughly. :)

@BrothersT Well done! Yeah, I had a feature planned to make the hero level up as he fights you so that you WILL eventually lose, but I thought it would be too risky given the amount of time I had to actually implement that. More fun to let people break the game by dominating it than to have it be too hard. Sorry about the frame rate, I definitely did some non-optimal code for the sake of time, if I continue this it wouldn't be difficult to keep the frame rate down. Lots of low-hanging fruit. I'm glad you liked it as much as you did. If you haven't tried my entry for LD24, you should! It was called "Ascension Garden"

dr_soda 2012-12-22 04:36

I think if your castle were positioned a little differently, your minions were just a tiny bit stronger, or the gold collection just a tiny bit larger, this would be *excellent*. It's still not a bad game as it is by any means! Good job!

ddionisio 2012-12-22 05:43

This is a fun game! It got kind of hard when the hero is pretty much near your castle. I had to keep defending. I don't remember if creatures collecting also attack? Also would be nice to have a select indicator. Good interface with description of each icon. Overall fun game, best fetch quest I've done! :)

ethankennerly 2012-12-22 05:52

The options are simple and the hero seems to respond to the opportunities. If you continue to develop, sometimes I felt a bit of effort to select and command a baddie to act.

tyruspeace 2012-12-22 08:36

I really like the treasure burying mechanic! Having the high score be directly in conflict with your survival is pretty amusing, too, and I appreciate businessgoat's investment advice.

I had a hard time getting used to the double-right-click-to-deselect controls and I still lose a lot of baddies inadvertently by running them into the hero.

Cool concept and pretty solid implementation, though!

takenapeveryday 2012-12-22 14:07

The idea of the villain investing in preparation for his inevitable downfall is quite hilarious! I can't say I made enough for my villain to have a comfortable retirement though - he would probably have to move into his evil son's basement. If this was developed further I'd like to see the hero unable to attack my lair until he reaches a certain level.

gamerespect 2012-12-22 17:10

I love the aesthetics!

stmatn 2012-12-22 21:40

It's difficult, but fun to play. Nice execution of RTS.

aare 2012-12-26 14:38

Nice and funny, I like when the hero heals by drinking :P
P.S. Love your avatar :D
